Re: Talking Point: What Are The Worst Parts Of Your Favourite Games?

Nicolai

I can't think of a single dry moment in Celeste...

Super Mario 64 is easy, its that star The Big House in the Sky; its the only carpet ride you can't skip with clever jumps unless you're an inhuman god of cheats on his 10,000th attempt, or a TAS-bot. So you gotta just wait... and wait... and wait... and nothing happens until minutes later when you pass by the fire (hope you were paying attention!!). Its an easy way to kill the pace of any 100% run.

Re: Random: Disgruntled Splatoon 3 Fan Complains Directly To Nintendo's President About Male Poses

What was the point of buying an OLED? Do Nintendo stocks have to be bought with gamer money or something? lol

@steely_pete

I agree mostly, but "What's the big issue with asking at a shareholder meeting?" Furukawa and other board members get paid a ton of money to make huge long-term decisions. They're strategizing their place around the competition and forming the company's image; they're structuring the company and hiring other major administrative staff positions (and having a swarm of hopefuls pester them for the promotions), analyzing the current market and basically predicting the future. They're probably used to shareholders asking uncomfortable questions about quarterly losses and pestering about plans for future consoles. Most shareholders have one and only one concern, that their investment will turn a profit. I'm sure Furukawa has done plenty of thinking about gender representation in Nintendo games, but I highly doubt he was expecting a request for more poses in a very specific game, and I wouldn't blame him if he didn't take it very seriously. Gender representation is important, but not having enough poses in this one game that already has a liberal freedom of choice for its character genders and outfits is going to have zero impact on the company's bottom line, and I'm sure it was the least of his concerns. He's probably more concerned with Miyamoto's incessant hypothetical requests to make a banjo-centric game than this.

That being said, since this story has media coverage now, I'm sure the dev team has heard this complaint by now. So, guess it worked?

Re: Random: Guillermo del Toro Praises Mario Movie For Moving Animation In Right Direction

Nicolai

I recommend everyone read the actual source, this article doesn't really do his words justice.

i.e. He's not saying the Mario Movie is an adult movie, or even a risk-taking movie, just that its a very successful animated movie and is raising the industry as a whole with its box office numbers alone. He's not saying your average animation is like a teenage rom-com overall, just the superficial way they use facial expressions. He wants to see animation portraying more realistic and emotionally raw stories, kind of like his take on Pinocchio. I don't agree with everything he says, but its a very different picture than what I thought he was saying based on this article.

Re: Poll: Do You Want Weapon Degradation To Return In Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom?

Nicolai

Kind of a weird question to answer right now. We know nothing about the game. I have no idea what system would be best for the game yet, it depends. The weapon durability worked fine in Breath of the Wild, but remove it and you'll likely have to add or change some other critical features, or maybe some of the new features makes weapon-breaking pointless. I'll wait until I play it to see if its done well, whatever they decide to do.

Re: Former Playtester To Receive Settlement Payment From Nintendo Hiring Agency

Nicolai

Not all jobs need unions, but some really do. It always depends.

I work in both classical music and school bus driving. For classical music, unions make a ton of sense. We're made of a ton of performers who are very creative and passionate about what they do. Our work is not very high in demand compared to the huge supply of talent, and there are many easy ways an organization can take advantage of us... making rehearsals go longer (risking injury), rigging auditions, not paying for travel and cartage expenses etc. Which, alone, we'll suffer through it for fear of not getting hired back. But I love working with union-based orchestras, because there's a culture of workers rights that we all follow. I don't have to worry about missing something important because I'm too scared to leave while our director rehearses us a half hour past schedule; chances are, at least 10 others are going to get up and leave right with me as soon as our contracted time is up, or better yet, we get paid killer overtime fees. Plus, orchestras like this tend to have a really on-top-of-it personnel manager. I have a lot to thank previous musicians for for the current work environment.

On the other hand, I'm not part of a union for my school bus company, and I'm glad for it. We get paid a lot more, and our work environment is virtually the same as other locations. This is because of very low supply of workers versus the demand. Not a lot of people are willing to handle the stress of manging kids on the bus while driving a large vehicle, and many people quit their first week. The result is that management is very kind to us all of the time, and they never exploit us because they can't afford to lose us. If anything, that means that there are a lot of coworkers I have that aren't very good at their job and take advantage of their work, which isn't good... but that's not something I personally have to worry about, and a union isn't going to help that. For my school bus company, I'd say a union wouldn't add anything.

I'm sure there are way more scenarios in which unions do or do not work for you... one thing for sure, not all work is the same. Unions aren't universally good or evil across the board.

Re: Nintendo Has Revealed A Splatoon 3 World Map

Nicolai

It kind of looks like the Adriatic Sea. It's funny how the Deep Sea Metro is just in the middle of the ocean, not connecting anything to anything else. Maybe it was submerged in some tectonic event and no longer serves any purpose.

@Synecdoche @strollin_stu I think the problem is that Splatsville sounds like a small town, and Inkopolis a big city, yet Splatsville is like 10 times larger(?) It's kind of weird.

Re: Poll: C'mon Then, Did You Predict The Zelda: Breath Of The Wild 2 Delay?

Nicolai

I'll actually probably enjoy it more now, I have so many other games to play this year.

I just... was so sure it wouldn't be delayed. I honestly can't imagine why it's taking so long. Again, I don't mind, I just can't figure it out. It's a sequel, it's using the same assets and world map as the first game, and yet it's taking longer than the first game?

Is it just because they're hoping to improve on the on the first game, and it's taking longer to fine-tune it all and find the right balance? Maybe they've just had to scrap and redesign it several times because they're having a hard time making it feel fresh and new while using the old map? I know it was said in some interview that Aonuma had to convince higher-ups to go with a bigger budget, and he was granted it on the condition that he reuse a lot of it for several games going forward. Maybe the pressure of those demands is hindering their creative decisions and they've had to spend a lot of time on trial and error to figure out what to do. Maybe they're just simply stressed because they have to live up to one of the most influential games of the past ten years.

Or perhaps the most likely scenario: I have no idea how game development works and its something that was obvious to everybody else.

Re: Talking Point: What Did You Think Of The Game Awards 2021?

Nicolai

I just find it ironic that this things lasts 3 hours, and yet they somehow don't have time to announce all the awards properly, instead just having Geoff rapid-fire them out unceremoniously.

If I remember, best multiplayer and best family game gets this treatment, yet apparently best content creator is just too important to pass up.

Re: Nintendo's Lawyers Strike Again, This Time Against A Mario NFT Gambling Game

Nicolai

It's fine to use those assets to prototype a game, but you're supposed to remove them before you go public. This guy is profiting off of Nintendo and he knows it; saying he'll remove it later after he's gathered all this attention isn't a good excuse.

Also, he doesn't know what the word "private" means. "It was private test videos getting put out there to grow." Once it gets put out there, its no longer private.

Re: Talking Point: Do You Have A 'Way' You Play Certain Switch Games?

Nicolai

I really only use the dock for local multiplayer these days, when I'm playing something with my wife, or when the Switch runs out of battery and I want to be in the living room, but I'm too lazy to get my charger from the bedroom.

There are some games that look noticeably better on TV mode, like the Ori games, Fe, and Rocket League, but handheld looks good enough. The only game I actually switched to TV mode for graphics reasons was Abzu, because 1) handheld mode had a very boring look graphically and 2) that game is primarily about the spectacle.

I would prefer not to be tied to the TV, so I really appreciate when devs take the extra effort to make it look as good as it can be on handheld.

Re: Video: Comparing The OLED, Switch, And Switch Lite Screens

Nicolai

It's pretty and all, but I still think burn-in is going to be a problem for me. Especially since Downwell is one of the games I'm playing now, and that game gives my LCD switch burn-in, thankfully only temporarily for a few hours. I'm sure the OLED Switch on the same game and time would get permanent burn-in real fast from that.

The OLED screen on my Samsung phone has really bad burn-in, and its so ugly to look at.

Re: Talking Point: Should We Be Worried About Screen Burn-In With Switch OLED?

Nicolai

I didn't realize burn-in happens more intensely on OLED screens; I always thought it was my phone's fault.

So... knowing my gaming habits, I probably shouldn't get the OLED Switch... as someone who plays exclusively in handheld mode, plays for 3+ hours at a time, prefers brightness to be high (especially when on public transit or in a well-lit room), and finds auto-brightness very distracting.
