@MeloMan Honestly, if they'd simply used all the old DK94 visual assets (maybe a few new ones) and just said "we're giving you 300 new DK94 levels" I would have been more excited.
I DESPERATELY wanted to love this game... but (at its core), it feels like a fan game made with an RPG maker program. It's incredibly sincere, the writing is clever, and there's a lot of charm here. Unfortunately, the flaws in balancing, level structure, etc. weigh greatly on the experience as you progress. From a HUGE wrestling fan, I have to honestly say it's best to wait on a sale and go in with appropriate expectations.
I've read enough to know I'm excited. Will probably just go in blind from here on out. In "Odyssey," I did not know that I could become a T-Rex with Cappy. When it happened, it was jaw dropping.
Staying away from spoilers as I want that feeling with this one (and I suspect it will deliver).
@JackieCMarlow The only overtly negative review was GameSpot and the glitch was a big reason for it. It seems like you can dial down the QTE items in the settings if you just want a turn based RPG.
Quite a few reviews were very positive. Seems like affection for the source material and genre is the big variable that determine how fun it is.
This game has a very specific niche (DQ fans who want a casual, quest based, open world collect-a-thon that focuses on cuteness over dramatic storytelling). I'm in that niche so I loved it. Hope the demo finds the game an audience.
@BASEDSAKRI Nailed it. Sonic is a ridiculous character. He's awesome, don't get me wrong. But this is a cartoon hedgehog running quickly through comedic locations.
FASCINATING! A fan game created with craftsmanship and passion appears to be MUCH better than that terrible LEGO Smash knock-off they presumably spent millions on.
@Ralizah They're in the market sweet spot. Sony has failed at portable and MS has no interest in it. Nintendo is LEGENDARY at portable. People will accept a level of reduced horsepower from Nintendo while playing on TV so long as the portable element is maintained (and the price remains reasonable).
It's such a different market, that I could imagine PS and X no longer even view them as a competitor. Nintendo owns a market space. They will NOT give that up.
Strong vibe that this is going to lean into Wreck-It-Ralph territory where familiar places and things give resonance to what I expect will ultimately be an emotional story. Very optimistic.
I'm hoping the storytelling leans into AlphaDream's amazing work (at least in terms of style). "Browser's Inside Story" is my favorite Mario game in terms of humor and pathos. I hope this can deliver more of that. The poster feels like a good start.
It's rare that a puzzle collection can be linked together into a compelling game that transcends its puzzle collection roots. The Portal series does it splendidly. Ya know what other game did this? MOLE MANIA!!!!!!!
Would love to see a Captain Velvet Meteor: The Jump+ Dimensions review. I've only seen a handful and they look positive, but this game has significant IP and credibility to get more consideration.
I think there's a strong market for DS era price(s).
100%. The end of a dedicated portable means that there are fewer smaller and more eccentric releases from major studios. The low price point allowed players to take a chance on content. The smaller scale allowed companies to take risks without much investment. More of both would be great.
This looks like a somber and melancholy landscape... I'm not sure that works for Sonic who is comedic and has had ridiculously themed levels that were just fun in the best games.
When concept art of the original was leaked, fans pooped all over it. Now M+R is one of the most hyped and beloved franchises this generation... that's now bringing back a beloved mascot. It's amazing.
Davide Soliani doing Nintendo games is magic. I have complete confidence he's pulled it off again with everything I've seen. Hoping Miyamoto praises him again and he sheds more of those wholesome tears of joy.
Davide Soliani obviously LOVES Nintendo with a deep passion. With this game, he created a Mario title that sits comfortably right next to some of Nintendo's best work.
I have to believe this was immensely gratifying for him.
OoT and MM used the exact same engine. Portable titles had a shorter development cycle. The scale and scope of a Zelda game post BotW is massive. The gap needs context.
My wife especially loved this game. GLaDOS has a personality and vocabulary that she says PERFECTLY matches a certain type of older woman in a position of power who thinks younger women need to better "know their place."
For anyone concerned that "Attack of the Friday Monsters" leans too heavily into a uniquely Japanese perspective... as an old western guy, it still felt EXACTLY like my childhood before mobile phones and helicopter parenting.
A strong recommendation to anyone with 3DS access.
@wuntyme8 Star Fox Zero Remaster would be great. I learned to TOLERATE the controls but never loved them. That hindered my overall experience with an otherwise EXCELLENT game.
@Maulbert Sega remains weirdly Japan-centric. Heck, even Nintendo (a VERY Japanese company), has fully embraced working with Western studios... Sega keeps getting left behind.
Some great titles... don't overlook "Mr. Driller" as it's a fully realized, AAA quality console game from the GameCube era that we finally got an English version of.
@Mando44646 100%. Transitioning to a new model of physical retail commerce would have cost money and taken time. The grifters running these outfits only care about quarterly earnings and their next job.
REMINDER: Physical retail did not have to die this way. The rise of e-commerce was understood as inevitable DECADES ago. They could have transitioned to a complimentary mix of offerings while having some thriving brick and mortar stores.
Instead, idiot retail executives fleeced these companies, workers lost their jobs, and we get the joy of an Amazon near monopoly (which I'm sure will work out swell).
@PBandSmelly Was thinking the same! My family was poor and I grew up mostly gaming on second-hand portables. The "ports" these got of current gen AAA titles were frequently PAINFUL... though sometimes better than the real one.
The new TMNT game and Sonic Mania gave you entirely new experiences with reverence for old titles at half the price. I WILL buy this eventually... just not at this price point.

Re: Review: Might & Magic: Clash Of Heroes - Definitive Edition - A DS Classic Returns In Mighty Fine Form
@iNintendo The learning curve is gentle. It more closely resembles a friendlier version of a card battler than chess.
Re: Review: Might & Magic: Clash Of Heroes - Definitive Edition - A DS Classic Returns In Mighty Fine Form
Unironically a top five DS game in my book. The battle mechanic is darn near an opioid.
Re: Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon Makes The Jump From 3DS To Switch In 2024
There are 1-2 modest QOL improvements that would really help this game. It also has a GREAT multiplayer. Will keep an eye on this.

Re: Rating For 'Ghost Trick' Has Been Spotted In Korea
Given how well Monkey Island is selling, I would hope that some of the old school adventure games get some love.

Somber Sonic in Hyrule is weird.

Re: Review: Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova - A Ragtag But Competent Co-op Adventure
As an old, hearing that a licensed game is decent is great news. A tie-in was typically shovelware that was nigh unplayable back in the day.
Re: Feature: Behind The Scenes With Mario + Rabbids Sparks Of Hope, "A Tactical Game For All"
My goodness, they assembled A LOT of talent for this game.

Re: Review: Return To Monkey Island - An Impeccable Encore For An Adventure Gaming Icon
No spoilers, but the ending will be DIVISIVE among fans. Like "end of the Sopranos" level divisive. I liked it a lot... but respect others will not.
Re: Round Up: The Reviews Are In For Return To Monkey Island
@scottishwildcat Same here, but the "Casual Mode" and GENEROUS hint system alleviates just about all the frustration.

Holy cow... I expected favorable reviews but these have basically made this essential.

Re: Random: Nintendo Confirms How To Pronounce Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom
The mystery was charming and it's a pity they've decided to solve it. Intrigue and a little ambiguity can be good for a title.
