Athletes, musicians, actors, etc. have a lot of downtime during travel and breaks. There are a lot of Switch fans, I suspect, because the portability makes it perfect for those times.
@Purgatorium Miyamoto is also a fan of Angry Birds. Yet no one calls him a pandering filthy casual. Gaming enthusiasts can be so tedious when compared to actual creators.
NL largely pooped NBA Playgrounds & WWE Battlegrounds. Neither is some 40 hour epic masterpiece, but both are BRILLIANT in ten minute intervals with friends when you really aren't too invested in a game and want quick fun.
Place, purpose, and context are often overlooked by reviewers.
This is going to be the game I pick up with holiday gift cards. It seems to hit the sweet spot of sincerity, puzzles, and story that games like Paper Mario had.
The original Matrix was a fun, Twilight Zone style short story that stood on its own. World building killed all the fun of it. It was the same thing with Pirates of the Caribbean.
Sometimes, leaving a good thing alone is actually okay.
@Mando44646 I get direct Wii U ports. I don't love it, but I understand. The Wii U userbase was so small, that the game will be "new" to the vast majority of Switch owners. But there were like a kajillion 3DS systems sold. You can still buy this title for the the 3DS for under twenty bucks at a used game store. It really needed new content to justify the price.
Companies saw the Gameboy and said "the tech is simple, we'll duplicate it, PROFIT!" and failed. I suspect the same will happen here. There's a secret sauce of content, affordability, and branding Nintendo "gets" in this market space that is MUCH HARDER to duplicate than companies think.
It's like turning a Ghibli cartoon into ultra detailed 3D computer animation. It looks nice... but undoes some very specific artistic choices made in the original. Mario could be turned into a real, chubby mustachioed Italian man... but it would be weird.
This very site famously gave BoxBoy a less than glowing review at launch (they called it "boring"). I love the game but it is curious to find it on the "best puzzle platformer" list now.
@syrupdash Space Invaders Extreme, Tetris Effect, and Pac Man CE should be the standard for taking old, simple mechanic games and making them new and vibrant. I hope they pull it off.
@Bizzyb In fairness, the Western developers Nintendo uses for games tend to do great work. LM3, Dread, and dozens of other Western made games for Nintendo on previous systems were airtight.
Based on Super Princess Peach (along with other titles), Peach is absolutely NOT helpless and could rescue herself. It all seems to be some sort of role play kink between the three of them.
@Zag_Man 100% agree. Metroid is vague. There's lore embedded if you want to look for it, but I prefer going into Metroid with uncomfortable ambiguity. Samus is on a mission. The world that once was is no more. What's replaced it is gross and ugly and wants to kill her. That's all I need.
The Robin Williams movie was directed by Robert Altman and written by Jules Feiffer. It was panned at the time but I think history has shown it to be a minor classic. There was also an excellent Popeye themed boat ride created by Universal in the 90's:
Outside of that, I really can't think of any significant media contributions related to Popeye in the last half century or so. Given Cuphead's popularity, I would have much preferred MDHR taking a crack at the character in the classic cartoon style. A gimped 90's collect-a-thon seems quite inconsequential.
If a person is one of a VERY SMALL audience that has the access point (and good fortune) for a flawless experience with this, great. The infrastructure is not there yet for this to be anything other than very, very niche. I don't see this changing in the next decade or longer.
@Moonlessky Cloud gaming, even with an optimal internet setup is generally not reliable enough to justify ANYTHING like full price. For every splendid session with a game, you'll likely have others with crashes, glitches, and lag. Until there's seamless reliability, I'm hesitant to buy despite wanting KH3 badly.
This is a lot of wasted effort because WarioWare: Get It Together isn't just GOTY. It's the greatest game of all time. All human endeavors were merely a prelude to WarioWare: Get It Together.
If you unpeel the onion about almost anything produced in the arts and entertainment industry, you're going to discover bad practices and/or people angry about something. I've just accepted this and I try to enjoy what I like and trust that serious abuse and malfeasance will sort itself out over time.
I have decent internet. I tested a cloud based demo from the eshop during the day yesterday and it ran like butter. I tested the same game in the evening and it was a glitchy hellscape that resembled a slideshow at times. Unless there's an unexpected optimization of the streaming of the KH games, buyer beware.
@nessisonett I feel like a few years ago, Disney would have enthusiastically come on board for the promotion and Nintendo prominently featuring in Wreck-It-Ralph. Nintendo doing non-Disney theme parks AND non-Disney animated movies made them persona non grata.
I don't have a PS (just the Switch; not Nintendo obsessed, just don't have infinite money). I'm tempted on these. I know lag is an issue with cloud games... but the KH games I played in the past were more story driven and relatively easy (i.e. you didn't need the reflexes of a spitting cobra to play them). With that in mind, generally will the lag make these unplayable given the types of games these are?
@K1LLEGAL The naming convention and lore of KH is incredible. It started as a fun attempt to let you have Mickey Mouse and Goofy in the Square universe... and it became the most complicated story in human history
Like Mr. Driller: Drill Land, this is one of those absolutely classic titles that MUST be accessible to a modern audience. The puzzle platforming and beautiful, melancholic story puts so many current "AAA" releases to shame.
I may be getting old, but the low investment, "play ten minutes and forget it" play of both Warioware and Sonic Colors have been pulling me in more than many more substantial titles.
I LOVED LOVED LOVED NES Remix and I typically wind up playing 9-Volt and 18-Volt stages in Warioware almost exclusively. Nintendo hates money because if an amateur coder is producing content this good, I would think they could bang out a dozen titles like these in an afternoon.
@dimi When the intro cut scenes are lush and gorgeous and the in-game cut scenes look like a Gamecube title designed for a CRT TV... "hasty port" red flags are everywhere.
Outside of the "so creepy it's great" Baby Sonic keychain, I see little value in going for this if you have it on a Wii.
Having played the heck out of every Warioware game, you will likely "finish it" in a matter of hours. The value will come from missions, challenges, score chasing, collectibles, as a party game, etc. If the latter is not appealing, it's probably just a fun rental or quick buy/trade. But for enthusiasts, I'm anticipating this one will give you fair mileage.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE Warioware. It's an eccentric, niche game, though (and I'm honest about that). It's the game you go to for a laugh with friends. It's the game you play for 10 minutes after marathoning a long RPG. It's a game you revisit to score chase just because you like it.
Reviewers judging this on the same scale as a Mario or Zelda title are missing the point. Warioware is a gaming fidget toy with some funny bits. If someone understands and appreciates that, they'll love it. That won't be the case for all reviewers obviously.
