Upcoming witch-kicking game Bayonetta 3 has apparently received its ESRB rating, ahead of an unknown release date.
According to Reddit user XDitto on the Nintendo Switch subreddit, the rating was updated on the Nintendo eShop page some time this week or last week to "Mature", which includes:
- Violence
- Blood and Gore
- Partial Nudity
- Strong Language
- In-Game Purchases
It's not entirely surprising that Bayo is going to be a sweary sexpot who loves nothing more than kicking off angels' heads, but hopefully this ESRB rating means a release date is around the corner. As for the in-game purchases, that could be anything from extra costumes to a DLC season pass that you can buy in the game.
However, the Bayonetta 3 rating is nowhere to be found on the actual ESRB website. But it's probably fine.
Do you got that Bayo hype? Let us know in the comments.

I think nudity and in game purchases will be related.
Can’t wait for the game though.
It looks like it’s still coming this year then.
Syluxhunter claims we will see new info tomorrow? Atleast we will know if he's a fraud or not after that So glad he made this tweet.. so done with these "hunter" leakers
in-game purchases? thats new for the bayonetta series.
I really hope we will see something new. This wait was long enough.
Nice! I’m hoping for an October release. So Pokemon doesn’t bury it.
Edit: haha yes!
Lol
satan’s holy trinity: nudity, blood and microtransactions
In game purchases!? In Bayonetta!?
@JessieAouV
First there's SamusHunter, now there's SyluxHunter?
These "leakers" really must love Metroid...
if there is no delay a release date NEEDS to be announced soon its stupid Nintendo are waiting so late into the year just to announce a release date
Are they charging to free the nip or cover it up?
@westman98 trust me im also sick of these hunters. Atleast we will know that one of them is legit or a fraud like the other hunter back in june.
“In-game purchases” uh oh I know where this is heading.
Bayo is such high camp that it just works.
Partial nudity?! Well that's no fun, I was hoping to get some fully exposed witch ******* this time
This good news. I guess the other two had the same rating?
This would be a great October game.
Nintendo is going spend as little effort as possible in marketing this game.
@marck13 bayo 2 is pegi 16 meanwhile bayo 1 is pegi 18. It seems like bayo 3 will be pegi 18 again although the trailer didnt look worse gore-wise than bayo 2 so dunno.
More booty is ok with me… I’ll even pay (a little) extra via micro transactions. That runway walk she has is killer
Not surprised...and remember, Nintendo paid for this game. Nintendo is a "kids" company. Nintendo is a "family-friendly" company.
@KBuckley27 Why is it stupid? What detriment does that have?
IN GAME PURCHASES!? That's horrifying.
@ModdedInkling Eternal Darkness (GC) says hello Published by Nintendo and 18+ and that's not the only one.
@JessieAouV Syluxhunter was right about Mario Kart 8 Expansion Pass along with Nier and Persona being in the Nintendo Direct Mini so I would say this person seems to be trustworthy for the time being. Samus Hunter has been wrong so many times to the point that it's so obvious that person just get their information from other people to pass on as their own.
Also multiple games have had the "ingame purchases" esrb rating, without any. for example Mario Strikers Battle League and Nintendo Switch Sports and Pokémon legends arceus.
It seems like it's because of Nintendo Switch Online.
@Sakisa Agreed. This is horrible, IMO, even if just for skins (if we're lucky). I definitely won't be buying anything digital w in app purchases. I'll get it used, as a special way of showing my appreciation.
Likely a sign that the game will release this year
Ah yes, the three evils of the world: Nudity, Gore, and In-Game Purchases.
NINJA APPROVED
I definitely feel like a trailer and release date is dropping either tomorrow or within the next couple of days. After that random Kirby announcement I feel like Nintendo is going back to just randomly dropping trailers and announcements. They're slowly revealing their fall lineup with these weirdly moves which is kinda annoying tbh.
Partial nudity: the side of some dude's butt cheek for 0.25 seconds
The last one's a bit concerning. Hopefully it's just costumes or something.
No surprise there.
@Mr_Fox lolol
Would be great to see a new trailer of Bayonetta 3. Hyped for the game.
@KBuckley27 You realize they've announced completely new games a couple months out several times, right? They did it a few hours ago.
Very good news.
Violence, Blood and Gore, Partial Nudity and Strong Language are all things needed in a Bayonetta game.
In Game Purchases? Not cool!
It must be finished to receive it’s rating…..but the fact that it’s not on the ESRB site is strange.
@Kirby_Girl Spoiler alert, the new Monster Hunter expansion is an "in game purchase".
Smh people think it's going to be loot boxes somehow lmao.
Anyway can't wait! Might be the first game I've bought at full price since Hades. Love me some witch tits.
My most anticipated game of the year! Looks like it will come out this year after all 🤞. Mabey I'll play Bayonetta 1 & 2 again before this releases.
I feel like some people in the comments are jumping the gun on that "In-Game Purchase" warning in the ESRB. For most of the Nintendo games, it usually meant DLC that comes out later, not stuff like Devil May Cry 5 with the in game items you can buy with real money. Plus I would think Kamiya would be against that idea
Nudity does not = Partial Nudity. Just saying.
This better not come out this October or my wallet gets it.
Fun for the whole family! 🤣
@Sakisa @Greatluigi @Kirby_Girl In-Game purchases is a descriptor that will show if there's a link to the eShop to buy dlc, it's not necessarily microtransactions.
😂 @ EVIL- C Blood, murder and guts is standard for the U.S.A....😂 Greetings from the U.S.A.
@Anachronism @twztid13 @Kirby_Girl @Greatluigi @Sakisa it's almost certainly nothing to be concerned with. "In game purchases" is a deliberately vague term, and can mean anything, even if a game doesn't have any actual DLC and just takes you to the eShop to buy other games (Kirby) or a Switch Online sub.
I have a feeling some costumes appealing to special tastes (lol) will be purchases. If it doesn't affect gameplay, who cares. Witches gotta eat!
this is HANDS DOWN my most anticipated title of the year!!! I want the so so naughty Bayonetta!!! HOLD ME!! PLEASE!!!!
@Orpheus79V Then hopefully it's a massive expansion and an Astral Chain crossover.
Probably the game I'm most looking forward to.
@link3710 @Orpheus79V
I was goofing around because it was a list of mature implications in the game and then "in game purchases"
So, it's not toned down for the hyper-sensitive nutjobs... Good.
@Willo567 You're probably right but the way companies act these days, more than ever treating consumers as $ signs, I don't blame people for getting even a little concerned when they see 'in-game purchases.' Devs/publishers have lost the benefit of the doubt, even the best of them.
I remember how the Nintendo content/costumes were entirely free for Bayo 1 & 2, but now they're going to offer whatever via paid DLC. People reiterating how it'd be harmless optional DLC, but so was the costumes in previous entries. They didn't have to include them free of charge, but they did.
Wait? Do you mean anti-Nintendo fans were wrong? No way!
Nintendo published Eternal Darkness, Geist, Perfect Dark, and BAYONETTA 2! Sony has done a lot more censoring over the years, but no one talks about that.
For all those above querying the in game purchases label. Keep in mind if there is any online gameplay at all there will be this warning due to requiring Nintendo online membership to play it.
Know Nlife doesn't like to state the likely safe obvious, but don't get your knickers ruffled folks. ESRB's 'in game purchases' label is absolutely pathetic and doesn't do what it should, to notify of predatory mtx in games ala everything EA.
@michellelynn0976 Sony is consistently getting blasted of late due to almost everything done and said by that pratt Jim Ryan. It's been going on for a good couple years now, much more vocal than the usual nintendoomed stuff.
The game took longer cause they were probably fighting off nintendos censorship they had with the second game
@AlexanderDaniels Or... it's also entirely possible (and more likely, given nintendo is publishing) that the DLC has nothing to do with costumes and is for some sort of expansion pass with new story content.
@XenoShaun You can't tell by the fans who still think Nintendo would make Bayonetta 3 T-rated.
I’m not complaining!
@Joker1234
It’s possible that they’re going back to 2020 style announcements with partner directs and random announcements for first party titles (e.g. Paper Mario).
With that said, my money is on there being a September Direct, where Bayo 3 will get a release date.
@link3710 That's even worse. Game has been in the development oven for about 5 years and you're suggesting they'd pull an Xenoblade Chronicles and sell further story elements separately. I would hope that all that time they spent would be to sell a complete package no strings attached.
YES!!! I can't wait!
"Bayonetta 3 Gets 'Mature' ESRB Rating For Nudity,"
Yea!
"Gore,"
ok, sure
"And In-Game Purchases"
oh, ffs.
Awesome. If the rumors are true, we'll be getting a release date real soon.
@michellelynn0976 Particularly stupid when it was Nintendo that insisted on Bayonetta 2 being more sexy than Platinum originally intended.
Nintendo are such prudes right??? 'Fans' these days.
All signs are pointing towards a direct in next week.
Imho.
As for Nintendo and censorship.
Remember that Nintendo published conkers, which was censored on the Xbox port later.
And of course they also published eternal darkness, Geist (I think), and devils 3rd .. and probably more I don’t remember
And remember that the Nintendo version of manhunt 2 was also the only uncensored version.
Platinum and ingame purchases?
Yup, there goes any hope of a preorder chaps.
I'll wait until someone went through it with a fine comb, i've seen Babylon.
@IceEarthGuard
Partial nudity is pretty much a butt cheek or some side boob.
@ModdedInkling Nintendo also paid for Zangeki no Reginleiv. Bayonetta may have a bit of sexuality but doesn't compare to that game in terms of violence.
In game purchases can mean anything, Sunbreak for MH is classed as a in game purchase for instance so i wouldn't worry as it could just be a skin pack or something.
"In game purchases"- so this is now a free to play game? Available on smartphones too?
Take it as you want, but also Big Brain Academy: Brain vs. Brain has the "In-game purchases" despite the fact that there are none. Also the physical version of Tetris 99 has that descriptor despite the fact it has the Big Block DLC already in the cartridge and doesn't need additional purchases beyond the NSO subscription.
On the note of M rated games I’ve always been surprised Persona is M rated
@OrtadragoonX I know. Just pointing out that Nudity and Partial Nudity means different things in video games. The game has partial nudity, and the title of this article just says Nudity.
Here’s hoping that there is no DLC for this. The first two games on Switch are Version 1.0 out of the box, with no updates released after the fact.
How I would love for Bayonetta 3 to also have that kind of polish. I’m tempted to skip it at launch as it will likely have a day one patch like all the others, and I am absolutely fed up with the practice.
fvck this game if those ingame purchases are MTX
@Moistnado you cannot complain here, because fanboys will kick your ass
@Sakisa The in game purchases label is so vague that it could include anything from dlc available at launch to loot boxes.
In game purchases have kind of put a dampener on me looking forward to it to be honest.
I want impartial nudity!!
It's been a long 5 years and even longer since Bayonetta 2 (my favourite game of 2014, which had some belters release that year). Eagerly waiting to dust off my Switch to play this. Hoping Metroid Prime 4 gets a release date soon too.
I Assume the in-game purchases could be costumes or multiplayer extras, as you'll need NSO to even bother with Multiplayer (was good arcade fun in 2).
This is definitely a game aimed at men of culture like myself. I totally agree with the rating 😜
I got a Switch over two years ago to play this and Metroid Prime 4... 😬
@XenoShaun Hey I agree. I just wonder why there is a big subset of fans who still think this is 1992. Yeesh
I LOVE violence, blood and gore, partial nudity, and strong language! But in-game purchases? That's where I draw my line. Definitely not buying this game.
Holy crap October is absolutely PACKED.
October 6th - Nier Automata The End of the YoRHa Edition
October 7th - No Man's Sky Switch Edition
October 20th - Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope
October 21st - Persona 5 Royal
October 28th - Bayonetta 3
R.I.P. my wallet...
Seems like Syluxhunter got the release date of the game correct. It may have been a lucky guess, but at least it wasn't a complete miss like anything Samushunter has said.
