...and the "ethics in game journalism" crowd is arriving cue. One article saying "I felt a personal connection to Samus" was too much for some, apparently.
This is a wonderful essay. I have two daughters. They simply want games that make them feel included (it was Super Princess Peach for my older one and Miitopia for my little one). This, despite the ugly voices of an entitled few, is perfectly valid. More people playing more good games will yield good games for all of us.
I'm delighted to see all the bans in this discussion thread. If people want to express their political viewpoints, fine. There are outlets to do so. Doing it here in a hostile way hinders what should be largely pleasant discussion on a fan site.
I appreciate so much content... but the length is sort of intimidating for the time starved player. Like, I LOVE Dragon Quest. I haven't gotten DQ11 (even though I want it) because I don't know how much time I'll have to get to it.
@thiz "Meanwhile hardcopys go for 70-150 Euros." The decline in physical retailers selling previous gen systems has been DEVASTATING. Just a couple years ago, DS, 3DS, GBA, and Wii content could be had cheap at places Gamestop (it kept me coming in). Now that they've decided to be current gen exclusive (for some asinine reason), the online option is eBay where collectors hoarde the these things.
I have ZERO problem with taking classics, polishing the visuals, and adding a few modern conveniences to them. The only thing that irritates me is lazy ports that they charge full price for.
A few days ago, there was an NL article lamenting that Nintendo no longer developed the modestly budgeted titles that were still wildly entertaining games in the DS/3DS era. At E3, we got Advance Wars, Warioware, and 2D Metroid. They seem to understand that spectacular new releases don't always have to be expensive, multi-year developed AAA games. This is good!
Kamiya is a bit of a performance artist. The twitter blocking and the like. It's his brand and people taking it too seriously don't get that. It also serves as a heat magnet where the press (which can be awful) games get go to him instead of the development team. There's value in that, too.
@NinChocolate You're 100% right. The company is on top of the world right now and "35" is not a hugely significance number. Plus, COVID probably made planning anything big globally hard.
I was hoping for a battle royale and maybe some weird remixes/challenge modes for NES/SNES online. Oh well...
@Clyde_Radcliffe Mario + Rabbids, 100%. Advance Wars is adorable to look at but strategies get VERY complicated fairly quickly. Most Mario + Rabbids levels are puzzles with a turn-based strategy mechanic. They can be very hard puzzles! But the multi-move, 20 unit planning of AW isn't there.
Mario Maker, Miitopia, Animal Crossing, and Game Builder Garage... all seem to be games where I will be admiring the achievements of others rather than engaging with my own artistic and creative shortcomings.
I'm profoundly impressed with the way certain indie developers are committing to bold and unique art styles (I really don't want to see anymore played out "retro" aesthetics).
This is feeling more and more like a BotW situation... where the game is completed at the end of the Switch's life cycle and simultaneous launched on the Switch and the next platform.
Probably not... my hunch is that the precision will be better with joystick input. Outside of a few games that were seemingly built with motion in mind (Ring Fit, Splatoon, maybe a couple others), I feel like motion control as a selling point for a game/system has long passed.
There's a bizarre need for a "console war" by some. It's over. It's not the 90's anymore. Nintendo is not competing against Sony/MS. They now make complimentary systems.
Honestly, we should be ROOTING for PS/XB success. The real competition is no longer gaming company "rivals..." it's the myriad of other entertainment options out there.
...and this comment thread has gone into the bizarrely hostile territory that I come to a site like this to avoid. Some folks would be happier on THOSE subreddits, I think.
@ErraticGamer The kids who enjoy quality games (even if they're cute and simple) will appreciate and support good games when they're older. When my daughter was a toddler, she LOVED Kirby and seamlessly graduated to BotW as she got older.
This is classic Astroturf. McDonald's is behind this. For the low price of $100K (if even real), they're going to get millions of social media shares with "BTS" "McNugget" & "McDonald's" in the content.
I love the setting. I enjoy Tolkien style locations and orcs as much as the next guy... but there are so many other myths and sagas around the world that would translate well into games.
This is a great game ruined by MANY disastrous missteps. They probably have about a week to turn things around before the potential userbase deletes it.
This might be excellent, but I generally prefer games clearly inspired by Nintendo to play with the art style a bit. My favorite example is Ittle Dew. It's clearly a love letter to Zelda... but they played with the art, music, and design to make something unique and different.
People lament the rudimentary nature of Miitopia as an RPG... but it's still the first game I've ever played that allows me to use a team of "Notable Pornographic Film Stars of the 1970's." That counts for something, imo.
In the past, I did so regularly. This was when games were expensive, I had little to no money, new releases were infrequent, and I had near infinite free time to game.
There are now dozens of interesting releases every week and I can afford to buy games. As such, the revisiting of completed titles is something I choose not to do with my now limited gaming time.
It's sad in some way as there was a pleasure in fully exploring the nuances of a classic title.
@Torn "It'll get a nice upgrade, but Nintendo won't push the hardware."
Exactly. "New" Nintendo upgrades to existing systems have never changed the user base. The New 3DS had some exclusive titles... and they had no audience.
Keep the existing userbase while fixing some irritating issues with the current switch. It will NOT be a fundamentally New console.
@NotoriousWhiz "I'll look into bomberman after the loading issues are fixed."
This is the right call. The game is great. It's designed to be played in marathon sessions of bite sized gameplay. The 4+ minute(!) match load times currently make it unplayable.
ALBW had the greatest PACING of any game I have ever played. Each area explored pulled you to the next flawlessly. As it was an open-ish experience, it all felt organic. Each phase of progression EXCITED the player about the next phase of progression. And it all wrapped up in about 20 hours... just enough time for you to love every moment but brief enough that you wanted more.
The fact that the ending was so sweet and melancholy is something that I don't think any other Zelda has achieved narratively.
I would hope a few (at least optional) QOL additions are made, too. Party management and the mapping functions in the old DQ games were a bit cumbersome/lacking.
For the "I've never heard of it... BAD!" brigade when new SNES games drop for the Switch... this is why that's not the right perspective. This looks fun! I don't know it! That's good! I'll probably tinker with this for a few hours and have a great time... paying not one cent more than my Online Subscription price. Great!
But some people are committed to disappointment...
Given the stakes of Smash in terms of sales and the fanbase for it and the IMMENSE number of moving parts in the game itself (both in terms of internal balancing and bringing in external IP), I could understand wanting to take a step back after doing it for so long.
Every major media player trying to enter the gaming space dumps a ton of money into infrastructure, tech, marketing, etc. They all seem to miss that for gaming, content is king. You need to launch with a must-play title and a suite of complimentary titles.

Accurate... and quite a sad summation of the current (deserved) standard we have for Sonic titles.
Re: Of Course Scalpers Are Already Flogging Metroid Dread's Special Edition And amiibo
The REAL bummer is I expect a game mode will be amiibo locked given recent history... so access will be important for experiencing the full game.

Re: Metroid Dread Tops Amazon's "Best Sellers" Chart
Metroid and Warioware have had GREAT titles that languished in sales at the end of console life cycles. That is about to be remedied.
Re: Metroid Games You Need To Play Before Metroid Dread
While controversial in these parts, AM2R is excellent and also fine way to experience Metroid 2.

Re: Nintendo Switch Has Been The US' Best-Selling Console For 30 Months In A Row
Switch is NOT competing against MS/Sony. It's a complimentary system that everyone loves and it has a different space in the market.
I WANT X/PS to succeed. We should be rooting for dedicated gaming systems generally. The "wars" of the 90's are long over.
