Love the look and the vibe. Point and click games live and die in the "Goldilocks" zone of puzzle construction. Too simplistic and it feels more like a coffee table book than a game. Too obtuse and it elicits a "why bother" feeling from the player.
I'll check to see where this one lands in reviews, but I am intrigued.
Astro Boy: Omega Factor is my favorite GBA game. It's a longshot with all the licensing hiccups, but I would OVER THE MOON if that's what they're up to.
@ludotaku I 100% agree the name has to be simple, clear, and provide the unique selling point in a word or two. I say go retro and call it the "Super Switch."
Mario and the recent Kirby provide a great window into how to move 2D platformers seamlessly into 3D. Yet, for reasons unclear to me, they've decided to directly copy BotW with this. I remain hopeful but nervous.
Looking at Forgotten Land and Galaxy/3DW-L/Odyssey, it almost feels like 3D iterations of traditionally 2D games are something that is simple and organically developes.
Sonic has always been there to remind us "nope, it's actually really hard." Hope they've figured it out finally.
Hoping they add some extra modes, remixed stages, collectables, challenges, time trials, etc. I love all these... but I have access to them on multiple systems I own. Will only dip in again if there are a few new hooks.
Zelda II was an ambitious but flawed game. Given its emphasis on 2D combat and exploration, Nintendo could hire any number of talented indie developers to deliver an upgraded modern version in fairly short order. Cadence of Hyrule is proof of concept this sort of partnership can work well.
@Pillowpants Low difficulty is not problem if a game constantly introduces new things to discover. In my opinion, Kirby and the Forgotten Land (while very easy) is a masterpiece. It achieves this by giving me new "that's so cool" moments of surprise every time I play it.
Low difficulty only becomes a problem if gameplay is rote. For example, a side-scrolling platformer with dull level design and repetition can become tedious with a low difficulty.
By all accounts, this game appears to be about inviting new experiences throughout a playthrough... so I'm not concerned at all about difficulty level (and Drinkbox is a wonderful studio).
There will be comments here lamenting a "gimped Switch port"... but that's not really the story. If viewed as a decent looking, portable, and VERY FUN port of a next gen title, it's great. Comparing this to FIFA or that abomination of a WWE title we got, this is more than we could hope for.
Objectively, it ain't no Citizen Kane... but I went with my youngest and she was SO HAPPY watching it, I couldn't helped but be charmed. It was really weird the theater was filled with so many kids who LOVE Sonic while being too young to have been alive when the games were very popular and of impeccable quality.
SEGA has a character with a fandom ecclipsed only by Mario. It's borderline malpractice that they aren't fully leveraging this.
Wii Sports felt like the starting point for a gaming evolution that would one day lead to 1:1 motion controlled games where input was seamless and immersion was complete.
It never really happened. I'm sure this will be fun. But it does not to appear to deliver what a near two decade old title once promised.
There are a depressing amount of people here who seem committed to strongly disliking this game. 'X to doubt' if Prime 4 will satisfy them despite their claims to the contrary (as they don't seem like a crowd that wants to be pleased).
I love baseball but I'm increasingly time starved for gaming. I like playing in 15-30 minute chunks every day or so. Does the Show lend itself to satisfying "bite sized" play sessions with some of its play modes? I just don't have the time for sports sims with a big investment of time required anymore.
@Paraka I'll admit I'm being wildly optimistic hoping for a PunchOut!! release (it didn't sell great on the Wii). Star Fox wouldn't be out of the question (a normal controls redo of Zero would work) and one more 2D DK (as sort of a "Returns" trilogy) would be possible, too.
I love F-Zero, but its presence on Nintendo systems hasn't been consistent across all generations and few people have a sentimental attachment to a key character associated with the game. Icarus on the 3DS was magic, but I can't imagine how it would work absent a touch screen and I can't see a full reimagining of the gameplay coming until next generation (if ever).
We got Metroid, Zelda, Mario, Luigi, and now Kirby nicely covered with Switch releases. Now just give me an excellent new DK, Punchout!!, and Star Fox before this console generation ends.
@Moistnado What Nintendo SHOULD be embarassed about with the Joycons is that they so thoroughly go against the company's ethos. Their systems were always known as tanks and their releases are never the buggy, unplayable messes we see on other systems.
@Kirby_Girl Forgotten Land is magic. As someone with Kirby <STUFF> tattooed on my actual skin, I'm pretty devoted to the series, lol. Forgotten Land has ecclipsed Robobot (which was beyond my wildest expectation for it).
It seems like we just need Star Fox to make a return and all the key franchises of Nintendo will have gotten energizing and fantastic titles this console gen.
@Dezzy70 There really isn't another system that would be able to duplicate motion based aiming. There are probably dozens of fondly remembered gun based games that could be remastered for the Switch. I'd be all about T:2 for example.
I would almost prefer something like Power Pros... a focus on simulation that assuages the current photo realism that the Switch doesn't have horsepower to deliver. As time goes on, attempts at 1:1 ports of current gen games are going to get ugly.
@Troll_Decimator Yes, Mania was made by an actual indie studio. But development began as a labor of love the devs had for Sonic. Enter Google in your search bar to begin your knowledge journey.
The reason they started such an endeavor is that Nintendo style litigiousness about fan projects was not present. It was unlikely their work would be met with a cease and desist in mid project.
As this particular discussion is (bizarrely) prompting what appears to be acrimony, I'll leave it at that and wish you a good one.
@sleepinglion Sega has MANY issues... but they correctly see fan games, remixes, etc. as gratis promotion that's good for everyone. We got Sonic Mania out of that ethos! Similarly, Disney is problematic... but they embrace community creations like the Ratatouille Musical as good for their bottom line.
Nintendo sees this stuff as a threat. Like... "if it doesn't come from us, IT'S PIRACY!" They seem to exist in the 1980's on so many things.
@Arckadius Nintendo typically loves to reuse good systems they develop for each console generation. I've been a little disappointed they haven't done exactly what you said.
Gotta have this. And since Joycon Drift has destroyed my controllers, I'll likely have to invest in a new set (as I haven't used the actual ones in like a year).
I think I'm out of the loop, but I've thought this looks like a neat Pokémon spinoff. The internet, fan sites, reddit, etc. all seem to be on an intense hate train against it. Am I missing something?

This is great the way Sonic Mania is great. It's how you REMEMBER all those great old games.

I loved NES Remix and hope this hits the same sweet spot.
Re: Sega Confirms Sonic Frontiers Won't Be Delayed, Says Fans "Don't Understand" It
EITHER it's a deeply flawed game OR the people in charge of it were incapable of communicating what the game represents.
Neither is confidence inspiring.
Re: 'Arkanoid – Eternal Battle' Hits Switch This October
This game is PERFECT for a modern revisiting. If done well, I have Pac-Man CE level hopes.

I read this as we can expect another Mole Mania soon.
Re: Reggie Talks About NoA Union Issues: "This Isn't The Nintendo That I Left"
This is systemic to modern corporate culture. It may be "less bad" at Nintendo but it's naive to think they'd be insulated from it.

Re: Random: Kirby Coffee Is Now A Thing In Japan, With Amazing Commercials
Japan LOVES Kirby. I should think him getting his own land at Super Nintendo World is guaranteed (after they complete the DK expansion).
Re: Kirby And The Forgotten Land Is Apparently Japan's "Biggest" Kirby Launch Ever
The love that core franchises have gotten on the Switch is amazing. Kirby, Zelda, Mario, Samus... they've all gotten benchmark titles on this system.

Mobile can be a promotional tool for console games. Licensing can produce ancillary revenue based on the success of console games.
