For all the people not happy about this... I recall the rumors of a new 2D Zelda for the Switch that turned out to be Cadence of Hyrule. Reaction was iffy... right up until people played it and realized how awesome it was. Hoping the same thing happens here.
@Late Exactly. If this sells well on the Switch (and it will... I'm already predicting it will eclipse sales on other platforms), a collection of remasters will undoubtedly come to the Switch. I'm also not convinced that a somewhat downgraded KH3 will be here someday, as well.
@martynstuff Sora is Disney and Disney is feuding with Nintendo over their land in Universal. There was real talk of Ralph being the exception to the "video game characters only" rule in the Smash roster. Mario was supposed to have a significant role in Wreck-It-Ralph 2. When Nintendo was clearly partnering with Universal and making the SMB movie with another studio, that was that.
Sora should be in Smash absolutely. But that ship has sailed.
@Tandy255 I TOTALLY agree. Color Splash was cute/funny but had significant combat flaws and some STUNNINGLY unintuitive design elements. Better to start fresh.
It appears this will be a sort of puzzle/action hybrid battle mechanic. Those can be a lot of fun when well executed. I just hope combat is incentivized. The last PM's actually rewarded players for ignoring enemies (which goes against gaming ethos).
Totally cute! Also a bit of a dystopian subtext with a whole class of service workers being recast as the undead looking for social acceptance by performing labor (which is not super far-fetched, tbh).
If we can get something that approach the precision of the stylus on the DS/Wii U, it would be a game changer in terms of potential touch based gaming.
Is the Mr. Driller game any good? Never played the Geamecube version. It looks like a pretty standard puzzler, but the series is beloved (so I'm curious). Price seems high for what it appears to be.
Now THIS is the sort of game that should be getting a remaster. Many remasters today focus on taking already perfect games and giving them a shiny coat of paint (Bowser's Inside Story, for example).
A better idea is to take excellent games that had a few fatal flaws and fix those.
I need more information about it (specifically whether it's level-based or metroidvania... I'm a bit fatigued just now with the latter). But it looks FANTASTIC. It looks hand drawn like Wario: Shake It and appears to play like the best Indie platformers.
Rainbow Curse would be a good candidate, too. Include a cute, Kirby themed stylus in the package and make it crystal clear this is a handheld-only game (no docked, wouldn't work) and I think it would be worth revisiting.
They could tweak the Star Fox Zero controls to play in a more traditional way (maybe a windowed second screen or HUD enhancement to accommodate some idiosyncrasies of the game). BUUUUUUUUUUUUT... if they did that, it would pretty much just be yet another graphical upgrade of Star Fox 64 (and I don't know if that's needed).
This is great. I was a lapsed player and returned to the game recently. They've continued to add content, characters, levels, achievements, events, etc. all of which are accessible for little to no money (if you git gud). I've spent more on AAA titles that I've enjoyed less.
If one owns a 3DS, the actual game cart, and rips the rom themselves, that would not be a violation of copyright law, as I understand it. Or am I incorrect on this? Because, frankly, there are some games I have that I'd be delighted to migrate to mobile.
@OorWullie My take is that if he was such a problematic figure, we'd have gotten more terrible stories about him. He's been squeaky clean for two decades. Not a lot of prominent athletes can say the same.
I have it and my super simple review is this. It's a "beer and pretzels" game. It's not a meal and that's fine. It's a charming little time waster to kill time when you aren't going to play something more substantial. If you play it in occasional 5-10 increments, you'll have a great time. Whether or not that justifies the price is up to taste.
If they do the right thing and copiously review everything about the early series that made it so beloved and create a modern game that uses that as a framework, I'd be super excited.
If they continue to "innovate" and destroy everything that was wonderful about the originals, I'm pretty meh about this news.
I enjoyed Slayin' as a mobile game YEARS ago. But games like Downwell have completely refined the formula so much since then. And the price tag is a little too steep...
I'm a lapsed fan of the game. I got through a bunch of worlds spending around $10 (mostly to support the game; paying wasn't absolutely necessary). Then it became clear continued progression would regularly cost me real cash and I was out. Has the game been loosened up a bit? I LOVED what I had played up to that point, btw.
@TheAwesomeBowser This is the correct response. I LOVED 64... but the subsequent tightening of 3D Mario controls makes the original nearly unplayable for me, unfortunately.
I'm ducking the rotten vegetables undoubtedly heading at my cranium... but I like 3DW more than Odyssey (tho both are great, obv). I think it's the best multiplayer SMB game of all time and Switch owners unfamiliar with it are in for a treat (if this is real).
@invictus4000 "Breath of the Wild fully playable with the ring con." I would, at minimum, love a mini game/challenge mode in other titles that allows or ring con play. Odyssey could have some excellent possibilities.
I have a special needs child who has lost services indefinitely because of the virus. While I don't want to say that Animal Crossing should be viewed as a therapeutic game, it really has been in this case. For a lot of people (especially young people) facing challenges in a difficult time, the reassuring positiveness of the game coupled with the sense of exploration and compassion will be helpful for many people, I think.
I don't know if Nintendo would do it... but I'd love for them to drop an early digital release today. Many of us are in difficult situations and it would be welcome right now.
Games like Tetris 99 are appealing to me now. It's obviously not human contact, but there's something comforting about doing an activity with other souls as I'm sorta stuck inside.
@Snow-Dust Their business model is to create maximum audience appeal at the lowest production price possible. There are numerous youtube videos documenting the use of lazily recycled assets, sloppy backgrounds, and visual cheats you would never see better animation studios using.
I'm genuinely concerned. Just hoping they pull out all the stops for IP as iconic as SMB and that they find lightning in a bottle somehow...
Super Nintendo World looks to be better than anything Disney has done in their theme parks in over a decade. I'm nervous about the Mario movie... but (against all odds) the Sonic movie was really fun and did well at the box office. Maybe there's hope!
Between all of this and the Switch's success, Nintendo is rapidly becoming one of the last fully independent media companies that still controls their IP.
@mesome713 Kids LOVE this sort of game. It's simple and the stakes are always quite low. That may be tedious for serious gamers, but it's delightful to the under ten crowd.

I love KH... but I've long since given up on being remotely able to understand the full plot of the series, lol.

Re: Poll: Which Remastered Mario Games Would You Pick For A 'Super Mario All-Stars 2'?
@DonutYoshi 64 has some rough controls in some sections. They hadn't nailed 3D quite yet. As such, a polished version intrigues me.
