As someone who just does these sorts of titles for 20 minutes at the end of the evening having the singular goal of not finishing dead last... I'm fine with this as FTP. I'm thankful for the serious folks interested in rankings and such that fund it.
That was bold. People may not like the art style or music. That is GOOD. Divisive content can be an indication or artistic intent... something too frequently lacking in modern gaming (which frequently seeks the common denominator with the lowest risk possible).
I've tried to understand the game a bit... it appears to essentially be a cross between Monopoly and a tile/dominoes strategy game... with a generational, iconic, but very Japanese character as the lead.
Some things just don't land globally and I'm afraid this is one of those things.
For a console, content is king. Rather than messing about with hardware, any company (including Apple) better make sure they have an impeccably designed must-play game with a suite of complimentary titles at launch.
There's been an overt, almost coordinated movement to weaponize cultures of fandom into becoming hostile (and even dangerous) groups. The online space has been gasoline on a fire.
@BloodNinja "a video with Crews in it talking about the sacrifices he makes to be muscular, and he was disparaging the audience from playing video games"
He was disparaging people who use gaming as an excuse not to exercise. Gamers can be fit. Get liftin', everybody!
It's a pity it appears to have died post Kickstart, but this would be a strong competitor for longest title: The Magical Realms of Tír na nÓg: Escape from Necron 7 – Revenge of Cuchulainn: The Official Game of the Movie – Chapter 2 of the Hoopz Barkley SaGa.
So Cuphead has made (the deserved!) transition into popular culture and artistic respect beyond the video game space.
Give it an easy mode. When you have what's basically an art museum as a game, walling off big parts of it for the majority of players is dumb. I get it, this was a part of their initial design ethos. But Cuphead has become something bigger and the game's inherently exclusionary structure hinders widespread appreciation of it.
Why Spike doesn't just port the recent Fire Pro makes no sense to me. It would sell like gangbusters and give the Switch inarguably the best wrestling game of this generation.
Okay, I'm ready for "git gud" responses to this... but I found the lack of signposts in the DS Zeldas to make the games irritating. I don't need hand holding, but I prefer Zelda games to have a clear "rail." You can jump off that rail, do all sorts of fun stuff, explore, solve puzzles, etc. But the game let's you know that when you want to return to story advancement, you need to go here. BotW, ALBW, Minnish Cap, etc. were great about this. The DS Zeldas had multiple stretches of lengthy running around and figuring out what you should be doing. They felt less polished than other titles.
So as a grown man, I'm not wearing a Pokémon shirt in public (sorry if that's your jam). HOWEVER... I'd gladly wear something with these on it. Would love to see more stuff like this on the market... sort of more subtle fandom stuff.
@Donnerkebab I think the craftsmanship of level design and the realization of the world those levels happen in is symbiotic and harmonious. I'd really recommend this video if you haven't seen it. It breaks down just how INTRICATELY Tropical Freeze was in level design:
When you compare these compelling characters in spaces that invite exploration with... whatever Balan Wonderworld is... the consistent quality of Nintendo becomes even more appreciable.
@GrailUK "Get the girl or save the planet is generally enough for me lol."
Oh certainly, platform games don't need to be Citizen Kane or anything . But DK getting so angry about banana theft or Bowser stealing Peach AGAIN never fails to make me laugh. When I fall into the pit for the 1000th time, it allows me to smile about the whole enterprise a bit. I think there's value in that.
@NEStalgia Unfortunately, they've now functionally made line-skipping a microtransaction at most theme parks. You can buy a "skip the line" pass or stay at the park's super expensive hotel and get to do many of the rides without queuing up. Cynical me thinks these new "plusses" they're regularly giving rides is to get whales to pay the money to pay-to-ride again. You can still wait in line for no additional charge... but that's increasingly like EA's "pride and accomplishment" spin for making players grind instead of buying lootboxes.
Credible review, but I disagree with suggestion that narrative is largely inconsequential for platform games. The best platformers benefit GREATLY from narrative. DK, SMB, and Kirby make all those jumps and dodges feel meaningful because of the universe they're built in.
Seasonal and event overlays are HUGE business for modern theme parks so I'm not surprised by this. These changes allow for repeat visits without "seeing the same thing."
I have been frightened of the MH series because of the learning curve (which is universally agreed upon as being quite steep) and the time commitment a play session requires (I've heard tale of numerous battles that could stretch to near one hour in length).
I'm not sure from this review, but I really don't know if this title continues with that tradition or if it's a bit more inviting to newer/casual players.
It's a cute RTS game where you collect little guys and use them to solve puzzles in a charmingly scaled down world. It's fun! It works! They could make more!
But Nintendo seems committed to just doing bizarre and ill-advised things with the franchise.
While some will praise Thousand Year Door as the pinnacle of a Mario RPG game... to me, it's Bowser's Inside Story. The narrative is so well-told. The idea of Bowser becoming a sort of incompetent middle manager with a really compelling personality flourished in this title. It remains one of the most hilarious games I've ever played. Controlling him was also a blast (literally). This is to say nothing of the immaculate pacing of the game. It was a TIGHT 20 hours where each hour built to a crescendo in the final battle. AlphaDream never ascended to such heights again. The pity is that with the studio's demise, we'll never see them have the chance to try to get there again. 😢
It's pretty clearly going to be the Donkey Kong expansion. There's already a model for what it will look like in Florida. After the slow, screen based action of Mario Kart in SNW, I'm ALL IN on the DK mine train coaster we'll be getting.
For everyone griping about Nintendo killing Prime 4 development to completely restart it or anyone complaining about the development length of BotW2... this is why those are good things.
Ever Oasis was FANTASTIC. Grezzo has Zelda style adventure in their DNA with some fantastic ports of classic games. They knocked it out of the park on the dungeon/exploration side with this game. The city management was a blast, too. And the entire package was adorable to boot.
My only MODEST gripe is that the city management and adventuring didn't always gel perfectly. I'm sure this could be fixed in a sequel. Hence why I'm hoping for a Switch port to generate interest in the game. It was released at a very inopportune time in the 3DS life cycle and was not marketed especially well.
@sanderev I GENERALLY agree with this sentiment about ports... but Bowser's Fury is very close to a full game add on (its length isn't far off from the original Luigis Mansion or Star Fox). It justified the double dip for me.
@WiltonRoots If you haven't tried Bowser's Fury, you're in for a treat. UNPOPULAR OPINION! I've enjoyed it more than Odyssey. I would also note that the duration of the game is not an issue for me. Luigi's Mansion and Star Fox both clock in at about the same length (if you do post game). Having spent close to 200 hours on 3DW on the Wii U, Bowser's Fury was my draw and I have not been disappointed.
I believe it's a rule that every FANTASTIC Warioware title must be released during a console's dying days to ensure that it is ignored. Thus, we should get one in a couple years for the Switch when people have already started moving on to the next thing.
@Rhaoulos Sorry if it came off as disagreement. I 100% agree with you! I was trying (clumsily) to say that if you take people who are A-talented & B-deeply love the source material, you could have some WONDERFUL video game movie adaptations. Unfortunately, studios have tended to do video game movies on the cheap, hiring hack filmmakers who care not one bit about the properties. They see the video game as built ticket sales from people who like the IP. There's no interest in "doing it right" in terms of fidelity to the game or telling a meaningful story. That's why I noted things like the Mandalorian, Wreck-It-Ralph, Marvel, etc. When people with a creative vision and love of the source material are given free reign, great things can happen. That has not (in the main) occurred with video game movies at all.
@Rhaoulos Disney (rightfully) gets a lot of flack, but their biggest successes (Marvel and the Mandalorian) have come when they let talented filmmakers with an encyclopedic love/knowledge of the source material create something special. Get a proven and talented director who loves "X Video Game" and the results will improve with the adaptations. Wreck-It-Ralph is proof of concept... the people who created it treated 8-bit gaming with reverence and the result was spectacular.
I'm profoundly impressed by the land's theming. I'm disappointed Universal succumbed to its tendency to make a "shake you in front of a screen" tendencies when Mario Kart needed a ride that had authentic speed. Was hoping for something closer to Disney's "Cars" ride:
@BulbasaurusRex It absolutely had the effect of quality control. You're right, Nintendo didn't directly do quality assurance... but the rationing of titles that received the seal caused developers to be selective about releases. It was a direct response to the crash of '83.
@Smores500 When the NES launched, the "Seal of Quality" was expressly created to stop the bloat of poorly designed trash games that were threatening the industry.
@Mallow I agree that Nintendo is a GREAT company. They're creator driven! Independent! Fair to employees! They don't release unplayable buggy messes! They are light years ahead of most game developers.
They just do weird stuff like remove games people want from the marketplace. They also killed a WONDERFUL system like the Wii U with asinine marketing choices. They did the Virtual Boy. It's just a surprising number of "wut?" decisions by a company that gets so much right.
