@6thHorizon That's not the hierarchy largely because the microSD speeds vary. The ones that Nintendo recommends - any SanDisk ones - are faster than the Game Cards.
It's also worth noting that the small storage capacity of the internal SSD does not affect the reading speeds. It's not like HDDs where filling it up does actually slow things down.
One more pro with digital - Better performance. The loading times are much faster on SSD and microSD than they are on the Game Cards. This is especially noticeable with some of the more recent games.
Mr. Nogami and his wonderful development teams for Animal Crossing and Splatoon have outdone themselves countless times. He is always a reminder that Nintendo isn't 100% traditional, and that there's always a spark for some kind of change every time he's involved.
I might have to be blunt about this, but people seem to be in denial about how "impossible Switch ports" are no longer justified because of the existence of the Steam Deck and Aya Neo Pro. It is important to keep in mind that ports towards the Switch is now different than a port to the Wii U or the Wii. The primary reason is that a Switch port opens the possibility for a mobile port, because the Switch uses the same architecture.
My guilty pleasure is Twilight Princess, (specifically the Wii version because I unfortunately skipped the GameCube version) because it was truly an experience that no other Zelda game has matched in terms of atmosphere and tone. It's not the best Zelda game, but it certainly is one that knows how to make a game feel grand and adventurous.
My other two picks are Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Age of Calamity. I always gravitate towards SSBU because it's mindnumbingly fun to grind. Previous Smash games were either too slow or required destroying your controller to play. Plus, it's my only handheld Smash game, as I skipped out on Smash 4 on the 3DS.
Now, with Age of Calamity... my heart has a special place for this game. My love for Breath of the Wild was for its lore, and one of the things I've been dying to see was the past. I don't care if this was in a timeline split, because it still gives us the vision of what Nintendo wanted for us to see. It's a fan-fic come true, and a fan-fic turned into canon (I will debate anyone on that).
People credit Id for being the grandfathers to first-person shooters, but it was always Rare that holds the crown title for being the lead innovator in this genre. Not only were they among the first to create a much larger multiplayer experience, but they created the most important control scheme for shooter games that is still being used today.
With Dragon Quest and Pokémon, or any other series that has been consistent with its roots, you can start at the very beginning. If it's a series that's a little more standalone per game with independent stories and different mechanics in each installment, like Final Fantasy or The Legend of Zelda, you can virtually start anywhere.
This makes a lot of sense, because PS4 and PS5 is where we also have Final Fantasy VII Remake, so it would make much more sense on a collection standpoint.
@Fizza Part of the problem is that there are still developers out there unable to grasp the Switch's hardware as well as others. To this day, very few developers (save for Capcom and Bandai Namco) follow the idea of making a game on the Switch hardware and massively upgrading it for other platforms; it's almost always the other way around.
I actually thought this was going to be a spiritual successor to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, being announced as a partial Nintendo Switch exclusive. Turns out I was wrong, and Nintendo released the DLC for MK8DX.
As an active listener to their podcast, I think I can definitely see why Nintendo is starting to hide the content. Recent episodes of the podcast did start revealing a lot more semi-confidential info about the company and the two weren't afraid of voicing their opinions over the restrictions they've had while working at Nintendo. They also made it pretty apparent that Nintendo of America started changing after Reggie left, and how the division was moving away from a more public image. This would be why we rarely see Doug Bowser now.
I'm not too concerned, because these two have hinted at holding an archive of all these episodes and I'm sure there are people out there who have downloaded these videos already.
I am quite annoyed by the negativity here, though. Please give the podcast a listen before you start making comments about scripted videos.
@TeaCatherine @MS7000 @Chalkfire To expand upon this, Age of Calamity is the closest we'll get to a Breath of the Wild-styled T-rated Zelda game. AoC does have a pretty gruesome death scene near the end of the game, which makes me surprisingly worried about Tears of the Kingdom appearing to be a little more tame than I had hoped for.
@Anti-Matter Welcome to a Nintendo Life article that isn't catered to you. Whether or not you want to be vocal about it is up to you, but being vocal about it when you can avoid it entirely is obviously going to attract attention.
The big fear of the existence of these devices is rather simple; developers will lose the incentive to port game over to the Switch because they have these instead.
That being said, however, Nintendo has held a perfect track record of successful handheld consoles (save for a certain VR console) and with the Switch's handheld side being one of the main reasons for its success, there's really not much to worry about, other than Nintendo's own questionable decisions.
Unsure why it takes an already-localized game to have a staggered demo release, but I already finished the 15 minutes from the Japanese demo (in English), so... strange idea, Sega.
Curious to see where this will go. Said relationships could help convince more large developers to invest more in ports to the Switch, given the severe lack in certain genres that weaker consoles from previous generations already had
@LX_FENIX Partially why I'm interested in seeing what happens if Nintendo ever acquires the Bayonetta IP and/or Platinum. It would make for a PR nightmare for Kamiya, knowing how strict and reserved Nintendo is.
Unlike many multiplatform games, I'm kind of on the bridge between wanting to get this on my Switch due to the fact that I have more time to use it during the day, or my PS5 because I also plan to get FFVIIRI for it to have a bit of a complete experience.
Video game addiction is just as real as drug addiction, but do people ever sue drug manufacturers for simply making drugs, knowing full well that these substances are addictive? Why in the world do we still have caffeine and alcohol in our lives then?
It's about moderation, it's about diversifying one's interests, and it's about good parenting. My goodness me, what are these parents thinking?
Not bad of a file size, though it was to be expected from a game that looks like only a few devs worked on it in the style of an indie game.
Kit & Krysta says that the $60 price tag of Nintendo games comes from them not wanting players to undervalue the games. Unsurprisingly, Nintendo will keep doing that for as long as people still pay for the games.
Wow, going back to the very core roots of what inspired the gameplay of Dead Cells is a huge honour for any developer to have. Looking forward to this!
@MattT3142 I would like to think that Nintendo acquiring Platinum would make it a huge PR headache for Kamiya, since he would likely have to change his etiquette on Twitter.
@SwitchForce
Once again, I said that the software and external design were made specifically to be a video game console and not a mobile device. I shouldn't need to repeat that.
This comes from how people will program the game. A dedicated GPU allows them to better graphics, yeah, but it all goes back to the CPU and how easy it will be for devs to work on it.
@SwitchForce The Nintendo Switch, at a software level and external design, is made to be a video game console. However, the internal hardware, namely the CPU, is an ARM 4 Cortex-A57, which is the exact same one used in mobile devices, particularly Samsung phones.
@gcunit There are many changes to Mario Kart 8 that I do think it's rather shameful the level of skill required is dwindling. First-hand, I've seen the effects of smart steering and auto acceleration being out on default leave a negative impact on learning the simple basics of this game.
@somnambulance I feel like it's the other way around, and that Nintendo doesn't usually let Keighley do big Nintendo announcements. This isn't Nintendo's event, after all.
@AG_Awesome Cloud gaming is the correct, general term, but the service that Microsoft brands themselves as is xCloud. Either way, if Microsoft wanted to bring CoD to the Switch through cloud gaming, they would've easily done so a long time ago.
@MythTgr That would be an incredibly underwhelming experience. It is very easy money because the Switch architecture is the exact same as a mobile device, but at that point it would just fall into a pile of shovelware just because the game was designed to be a mobile game at heart.
@AG_Awesome It would be incredibly naive to think Microsoft would automatically resort to using xCloud to bring CoD over to the Switch, given it would make more sense for them to devote cloud gaming resources over to Game Pass for mobile.
The problems with porting CoD to the Switch stem from the same problem that's already plaguing current gen and last gen consoles - storage size. The amount of storage needed to install, at the very least, one CoD game and Warzone, is large enough to take up way too much space for even a PS5 or XSX. For today's standards, CoD games don't need to be that large to have sustainable gameplay features.
@SearchingS The Vita was hindered by hardware limitations, but I think it's commendable they tried introduced a prequel to Black Ops 2. If they had properly designed the game to be its own thing rather than try to mimic console CoD game, it would've been executed much better. Even if it was a super water-downed port of an older CoD game, it would've been better than what we have.
@Cr4shMyCar To put it optimistically, Treyarch Studios were behind all of the Wii and Wii U ports for Call of Duty games. I wouldn't doubt that they've probably played around with the Switch's hardware to know enough about how to port games.
@Bret I'm thinking that Microsoft will soon address this data issue, because it's already hurting current gen consoles and PC as much as it would hurt the Switch. The fact that it takes more than a full internal PS4 hard drive to get all of the current Call of Duty games is a sign that Microsoft would be doing it regardless of the Switch.
@somnambulance Historically, most Call of Duty games were developed specifically with the latest hardware in mind, and the ports that followed them came out of experience and were seen as side projects; no Call of Duty port was ever going to hinder the game's full potential.
@kkslider5552000 Microsoft has kept up a pretty good track record at the games they've already given to Nintendo. Both of the Ori games ran so incredibly well despite being very graphically complex. They also had a special deal with Nintendo to make online multiplayer for Goldeneye 64 exclusive to the Switch. I think they would make huge investments on full blown ports, especially if they are devoting their cloud streaming for Game Pass.
