Re: Star Fox Designer Was Relieved To Leave The "Amazing People" At Nintendo

JumpingJackson

@MegaVel91 For me it’s that lack of Nintendo polish I’ve seen a few times last generation. Echoes of Wisdom* & Pikmin 4 spring to mind with their endless interruptions, repeated unskippable animations / text, and slow input register to skip through menus.

And Colin. That guy needs to go.

*And while this was by Grezzo not Nintendo, it’s Nintendo’s characters, name etc, they should have insisted.

Re: Switch 2 Has Already Overtaken The Combined Lifetime Sales Of The Entire Xbox Series Family And PS5 Pro In Japan

JumpingJackson

@Mana_Knight Christ alive I'm bored to the teeth of this childish back and forth 'na na na na you're wrong you're wrong' etc.

Can we just agree that initially some people thought the high cost of the device and the high cost of the games would lead to slow uptake. That hasn't happened. Good.

But remember the Wii had massive sales and brought in 'casuals' who eventually got over it like they get over any new purchase and move on to something else. Leaving those of us that really like gaming stuck with companies releasing waggle-ware and shovel-ware designed to bring those people back to the table when they were never coming back.

There is a global cost of living crisis. Most are happy with Mario Kart because it's a pack in at a much cheaper cost than what buying it alone would cost. Let's see what happens when people are asked to pay £70 a time for a game. I suspect we're going to see it tail off. Look at the third party support, a report earlier this week about publishers are disappointed with the uptake of their software: because people aren't spending the money.

Now of course this could be because many of them are old games re-released. Cyberpunk has probably been bought by most people that were interested in it years ago on other platforms.

We are only a few weeks from launch, and a quick glance at shops show stock coming in, and sticking around a bit longer than I would imagine given the supposedly super high interest in the new device.

I'm just saying that we could have grown up, proper discussions with each other without devolving into this playground nonsense of those people saying 'its definitely not going to pay off' being called idiots, and vice versa. There is a difference between initial excitement and long term investment. There is room for things to change and people to change their minds. Would the Switch 1, for example, have done so well without Covid?

Re: It's Official, Switch 2 Has Sold Over 3.5 Million Units Globally In Its First Four Days

JumpingJackson

@Aurumonado It’s been one week, settle down.

I’m in two minds:

1) Let’s see where the land lies after the initial release rush and see if it has the same install base as the first one (with obvious caveats - lets be real, Covid helped the entertainment industry). I can see those with a passing interest in gaming not being interested in such a high price for machine + games.

2) Alternatively, I’m hoping that this is a sales success as that hopefully means we’ve (finally) turned an economic corner, people have more disposable income that they’re happy to part with, and things are on the up.

Re: Feast Your Eyes On The Official Switch 2 Launch Trailer

@Kidfunkadelic83 I almost did the same, despite my negative feelings towards the price of games, and the 'feel' that Nintendo are giving off to me. But I'm a sucker for new toys.

I've decided to decorate instead, to keep my tech-addict hands away from the computer. Apart from this here. And I will not tab across to Argos.

Re: Publishers Are "Thanking" Nintendo For Game-Key Cards On Switch 2

JumpingJackson

I feel like I'm missing something here: if you're a small publisher and want to reduce costs, why would you bother with a game keycard at all?

Surely that extra plastic is an added cost that you can't afford. The only ones I can see doing well out of this is the big publishers looking to cut corners, as the smaller developers would just release digitally, no?

Re: Round Up: The Final Previews Are In For Mario Kart World

JumpingJackson

Toyed with the idea of ‘if I walk into a store and they have a bundle I might pick one up’, but this has firmly kicked me off that idea. And in the future if it’s still the non-pack-in price I’ll skip it entirely. A shame.

I’m sure I’ll pick one up eventually. That’s been the case with all Nintendo machines (only got the Wii and Switch on launch day). I think I just need the library to expand with quality a bit.

Those who are buying it: have fun tomorrow!

Re: Poll: With One Week To Go, What Are Your Switch 2 Launch-Day Plans?

JumpingJackson

@Stwert That was my thinking "I'll get one because the games are coming", then thought "I'll get one when the games come". I loved BotW, wasn't overly keen on TotK after smashing through it (took a bit of retrospection to work out why I come back to it and last 10 minutes whereas with BotW I can jump into another full play through), so I'm waiting to see what the games are.

Have you got one pre-ordered? Ready for Thursday?

Re: Poll: With One Week To Go, What Are Your Switch 2 Launch-Day Plans?

JumpingJackson

I genuinely - and I mean this sincerely - envy those of you that have found excitement with this machine, modern gaming, the upgrade offer, MKWorld etc.

I've hovered over the pre-order button because Christ Alive I love myself some new toys to play with. But I'm just not getting that excitement* over it, certainly not enough to justify the price. The games don't seem that exciting, having had a recent dabble with 3D Mario games I realise I don't really enjoy them now I'm older.

This has been an on-going feeling though, that with gaming since the Amiga, I've seen it all and there's not that new pull. There's the argument over better frame rates, and fidelity; I had the time of my life with 8fps Ocarina of Time and the fidelity of an Amiga game, so that's not a pull for me. And I'm tired to the teeth of hearing about ray-tracing.

This to say: I hope those of you with pre-orders enjoy Tuesday and have one of those rare, excitement driven days that only happen twice a decade of a new machine and new games.

*When I think about it, I only got the Switch on launch day because Amazon fluffed my WiiU Breath of the Wild order and it was either wait a week for the game, or get it on Day 1 if I bought a switch. No BotW would mean I'd be a later adopter of that console too.

Re: Yooka-Laylee Dev Playtonic Is The Latest Studio Hit By Layoffs

JumpingJackson

I want to preface this with the idea that freelancing in the film industry is a pain in the arse.

But I don’t understand why the game industry isn’t more like this, if a studio isn’t working on a project that requires Role Y, then why is Person Y employed there?

I’m astounded that the games industry hasn’t gone to this approach. On the other hand I wouldn’t wish it on people, I just can’t believe it hasn’t happened with the (what feels like) consistent rounds of layoffs at companies.

Again, not saying it should be. Surprised it isn’t. I welcome insight.

Re: Nintendo: "Appetite" For Mario Kart And Series' Accessibility Makes It Ideal For Switch 2's Launch

JumpingJackson

@sanderev Buy a bundle with the console - so you then have to buy more games at this higher price? I'll wait for any second hand market methinks.

And to your other comments, I don't know where you live but in the UK at least, friends and family seem unable to find a pre-order. So whenever you're ready to get off your sanctimonious high horse the better for all of us.

Edit: just want to add, the 'ignore all comments' button is glorious.
