I think all three games look amazing compared to their original releases. I can't wait until Friday. I haven't been this excited for a new release in a long time.
The original N64 SM64 is my favorite, followed by Odyssey and Sunshine. There's really no wrong answer, as each 3D Mario game is amazing in its own way.
Mario got me into gaming with the original Donkey Kong. Super Mario Bros was my first console game on NES. Super Mario Land was my first Gameboy game. Super Mario World and Allstars were among my favorite SNES games. Mario 64 was my first 3D game and remains my all-time favorite game. Sunshine was my most played GameCube game. Mario Galaxy enticed me back to gaming after a two year hiatus. 3D World was my favorite Wii U game. Odyssey is my favorite Switch exclusive.
It's been a great run. I hope to be playing Mario for the next 35 years.
Looks great to me. I just hope it's easy to exit to the main menu from each game and quickly select another. I want to be able to play a level or two, exit and play another game quickly and easily. That's what I loved about the original Allstars.
This is a cool website for a game I still regularly play on my Retro USB AVS. I still have my manual for Super Mario Bros. I remember staying up late Christmas night reading through it when I got my NES. I loved looking at the sprites and reading the brief description for each.
I can't wait to get my hands on the Super Mario Bros Game & Watch.
I'm so excited for 3D Allstars that I'm mostly playing Mario Odyssey and Mario 3D Land. I'm also playing Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes, Rouge Squadron, Perfect Dark, and Banjo Kazooie, when I'm off work.
I'm just hoping for a remaster of the first two games. If it's something new, I really hope it's in the spirit of the original. I bought Banana Blitz, but it never really clicked the way the original did. The series really lost its way somewhere along the line. I still play the first game regularly on my GameCube, so I know the series has the potential to be great.
This news only makes me glad I pre-ordered one from Best Buy and one from Amazon. As long as one of them comes through, I'll be happy. I do hope I get both though. This is certain to become quite the collector's item. I hope everyone who wants a physical copy will be able to get one without resorting to scalpers.
@Erchitu I just got the NTSC Super 64 and I love it. With the smoothing turned on, it looks as good as I remember N64 looking on a CRT. I don't have an mClassic yet, but I plan on picking one up down the line. Does it make a very noticeable difference?
You should put a fourth option for playing them simultaneously. Just as with the original Allstars, I'll play a few levels, save, and then jump to the next game and repeat. Part of the fun of Allstars is quickly changing games.
Before this was announced I got HD converters for both my N64 and GameCube. I started games of both 64 and Sunshine. 64 is so misjudged based on the Wii/Wii U VC releases. There's nothing like playing it on an N64 with the controller it was designed around. It always felt a little glitchy on the VC and an analog stick is a poor substitute for the c buttons. I'm hoping the Switch version is better, but just having the original version portably is worth it for me.
I'm such a big fan of all three games, so I'll probably play through Allstars during my work week and the original versions at home. It will be fun to compare.
It doesn't really bother me, as this would have been a day one purchase no matter what. Had I not been able to pre-order it physically, I may be singing a different tune.
I really don't think March will be the last time these games are available new. I'd be willing to bet that Nintendo just has other plans for these three games. It could be selling them individually on the eShop. Personally, I think they'll be released as part of a premium NSO subscription that will offer select N64, GameCube, and Wii games.
It's a neat concept. No doubt, if this came out when I was a kid I would have begged my parents for it. It's a steep asking price for what you actually get. Unlike Four Sword Adventures, it will be close to impossible to assemble everything needed for a multiplayer game years down the line. The software is download only, so it will disappear with the eShop. The cardboard pieces are also unlikely to survive long. If the cars have built in lithium ion batteries, when those die the cars won't work anymore. This might be worth it if you could pull it out of a box every so often and have a novel experience to share with friends and family, but it seems built around a short term experience.
@Desrever I totally agree. The convenience of being able to play anywhere is a must for me. I play about equally between handheld and TV, but my TV time is on multiple TV sets so I have a dock for home and one for travel.
I've thought Switch is perfect for VR. My second system is an Oculus Quest. It does VR wonderfully and isn't any more powerful than a Switch, so it's totally doable. As long as the pro has a higher resolution screen and is lighter overall. The joycon are perfect for VR. If the headset had cameras and the joycon had ir attachments, it could even do 6dof. I would be willing to pay more for a VR capable Switch, but it doesn't seem like Nintendo is really interested in VR right now.
I pre-ordered one from Best Buy and one from Amazon. One will stay sealed on my Nintendo shelf next to all my Club Nintendo Platinum prizes. I couldn't resist with a limited release of three of my all-time favorite games.
It's a shame scalpers are already preying on people. Hopefully, Nintendo makes enough so that everyone who wants one can get it for it's recommended retail price.
This game really made me appreciate the developers of the official 2D Mario games a whole lot more. I definitely got my money's worth out of Mario Maker, but after playing through the included single player mode, creating several levels, and trying some community levels, I was done. When I'm craving 2D Mario I'll stick with NSO and NSMBU. The levels are crafted so much better in those games. There's also a sense of progression that can't be replicated in Mario Maker.
All three games are favorites, so I'm super excited to be able to play them anywhere. Mario 64 is my all-time favorite game. I knew it would eventually get a Switch release, but I never thought Sunshine would be rereleased. Galaxy is one of the few games my wife will actually play with me. This package is definitely worth the $60 price tag and will become one of my most played Switch games. 3D Mario has been my favorite part of each console generation since the N64. I pre-ordered two copies just to keep one sealed.
Still playing Paper Mario on Switch, but the SNES edition of Mario Allstars has slowed me down a little. That was easily my most played SNES game as a teenager. I play through the NES versions regularly, but I'm still really enjoying having Allstars on the Switch. I'm playing a little Odyssey too, as I'm itching for the release of 3D Allstars.
On 3DS I'm playing Samus Returns. It's such a great game. I'm also playing Starfox 64 3D.
At home I'm playing MGS: Twin Snakes on my GameCube with a little Super Monkey Ball. On my Wii U I'm playing Super Mario Galaxy 2 in anticipation of 3D Allstars. I'm also waiting for my Eon N64 HDMI converter and I'll start playing through Banjo Kazooie and Perfect Dark again.
I love SMG2, but I like the first one better. My guess is they'll either include it in a vol. 2 with a remastered 3D Land and 64 DS (wishful thinking), they'll sell it separately later on, or maybe they're considering an upgraded NSO with N64, GameCube, and Wii titles and they're saving SMG2 for that. For now, I'll just have to go to my Wii U when I want to play it.
I've got my physical copy pre-ordered from Best Buy already. 3D Mario games are my absolute favorite. It will be really nice to have an updated hard copy of these classics. I do wonder how F.L.U.D.D. will work without analog shoulder buttons.
I use slower months in the release schedule to add to my retro collection, so I actually welcome the opportunity.
I finally got an HDMI converter for my GameCube. Kaico's adapter works the same as Eon's at nearly half the price. I'm playing Super Mario Sunshine when I'm off work. It looks great on my 50" Toshiba 4k TV. Especially with the artificial scan lines.
I also finally got my hands on one of the smaller model New 3DS systems. The New XL just felt too big and heavy to carry around with my Switch. The small one is the perfect size for fitting in the pocket. I got a new 1up themed faceplate and it looks great. I'm finally playing through Metroid: Samus Returns. It looks great on the smaller screen.
On my Switch, I'm still playing Paper Mario Origami King. It's such a fun game to explore. I'm thoroughly enjoying it and taking my time to find everything.
Besides all of that, I have some great books to read. I'm all set for stimulating entertainment for a while.
That's one hell of a publicity stunt! Epic sure knows how to manipulate their customer base into thinking they're the "good guys". Everyone knows Apple and Google are greedy, but Epic is truly devious. People are gullible, so I'm sure they'll turn a tidy profit from this scheme.
I wouldn't read too much into it, although I would love to have a Sunshine remaster/port. I'm not sure how it would work without analog triggers for F.L.U.D.D., though.
I don't think I've seen a list on NL that was quite so predictable. Personally, I prefer PM as a traditional RPG, with experience points and turn based combat. Origami King turned out pretty good, though. I like all the exploration. I do hope we eventually get a remaster of TTYD.
That was a fun article to read. It takes me back to how difficult it was to control a character in a 3D environment, coming from only 2D games.
The NES was my first Nintendo home console, but there was no denying how impressive the N64 was when it came out. I still remember playing Mario 64 for the first time at Toys R Us. I didn't get an N64 until the middle of the generation, but I absolutely loved it. It's hard to understand just how amazing it was going from 2D to 3D unless you were around for the change.
I definitely think these are cool, but hardly worth it when you can get a Retro USB AVS for less than half the price. The AVS is an FPGA system that plays cartridges from every region and accepts original controllers. I also greatly prefer the design, as it mimics the front loading original with same color scheme. I've had mine since it released and I still love it.
Given how the remastered trilogy sold on Switch, they'd be crazy to not even consider it. They probably want people who own multiple consoles to double dip when the Switch version finally releases a year after the other consoles. I can wait.
@Magrane I loved Marble Madness. I never actually owned it, but I rented it often. I think I missed Captain Skyhawk. Maybe I'll look into picking it up for my AVS.
NA/Europe one looks best to me. The Japanese one is cute, but my eyes are drawn to the spelling of Yossy. The NA one is iconic, nostalgic, and is more representative of the actual gameplay.
I'm finishing up Catherine Full Bodied, and putting some more time into Paper Mario Origami King on Switch and Espire 1 and Onward on Quest. Have a great weekend, everyone!
My first Rare game was Snake Rattle 'n' Roll for the NES. I've loved the company ever since. I'm still holding out a little hope that we'll get Rare Replay on Switch. At the very least the rest of Rare's DK games should make it.
This is exciting news, for me. I have it on Wii U, but I don't have a lot of time to play games on a stationary console, so I'll definitely double dip for the portability and extra content. I really hope this means that the Super Mario 3D collection is actually coming. I'm trying not to get my hopes up over rumors, but that's one I'd really like to see happen.
I already have a modded backlit GBA, so this doesn't appeal the same way Analog's other FPGA systems do. I'm just waiting for them to get the Super NT back in stock.
@Tasuki I love my Retro USB AVS. It's a wonderful investment for fans of the original console.
It's hard for me to even look at this Lego NES. I haven't played with Legos since I was 10, but this is pure nostalgia. There's no way I can justify the price. My wife would think I was crazy. I already have an AVS for my 50" 4k, a toaster NES hooked up to a CRT (for zapper games), a boxed mint condition toaster with R.O.B., an NES mini (for the bedroom), and the Switch NSO NES controllers. There's no justifying a Lego model.
I can't speak for game development, but my Switch collection is easily as large as any console plus handheld collection I've had in the past. Nintendo seems to be doing a fine job with consistent, quality releases. I also understand that not every Nintendo developed game is going to be on the scale of BotW or SMO. With everything going on in the world this year, I can't blame Nintendo for being a little slower with releases. I have enough in my backlog to keep me busy.
Being a Nintendo-centric fan, the big direct and treehouse events were sorely missed. E3 has always felt like a holiday, with excitement I rarely experience the rest of the year. It was a time I really felt connected to my fellow Nintendo fans, regardless of what was or wasn't announced. I'm not really worried about what will be released for the rest of the year. I have plenty of games to play. I just miss the hype and celebration.
I put about 300 hours into the game during the first few months after it released. I definitely got my money's worth and it was really fun, while it lasted. I feel pretty burned out on the whole experience at this point. Island hopping gets old pretty fast, in my opinion. I got to tarantula island a few times. That was exiting, but I found most of the other islands pretty underwhelming.
I'm very happy that 3D platformers have made a comeback this generation. This looks like another great addition to my growing collection of 3D platformers on Switch. I'm definitely getting some Nights and Billy Hatcher vibes, which is most welcome. Looks like a day one purchase to me. I just hope they take some time to properly optimize it for Switch.
Hmm... I'll stick with my Oculus Quest for those sorts of experiences. It already gives me 6dof VR, as well as video streaming. The Switch works perfectly well for portable gaming without a headset.
I remember getting TMNT the Arcade game for NES when I was a kid. It was heavily sponsored by Pizza Hut. It came with a coupon for a free personal pan pizza and had adds strategically placed in the background sprites. It worked, as I begged my parents to order pizza upon opening up the game and finding the coupon.
I love Sunshine. I think 64 will always be my favorite, but 3D Mario games are one of the major experiences that keep me gaming. It would be awesome to have remasters. I really hope this fabled collection is real.
I, for one, am glad these ports exist. There's no way I would have the time to play through many of these games if they weren't portable. For some of us, accessibility trumps performance.
He definitely made an impact on Nintendo fans as well as the videogames industry at large. I miss him. Nintendo is not quite the same without him. He really was an amazing guy.
I really hope we see the Switch brand carry on for a while yet. I don't see myself going back to tethered TV only console again anytime soon. The Switch is great, but there's still so much more Nintendo could do with the brand, like VR. I just hope the next Switch is fully backwards compatible with current cartridges and downloads.
I picked Zelda II and Kid Icarus Uprising. They're both good but flawed games that could be great. If I could only have one, it would be Kid Icarus. There's a potential top tier Nintendo series there.
This review has really intrigued me. I'll have to give the series a try, at some point. I can wait until the first game gets a discount. Seems like both games have a lot of character.

@Erchitu I just got the NTSC Super 64 and I love it. With the smoothing turned on, it looks as good as I remember N64 looking on a CRT. I don't have an mClassic yet, but I plan on picking one up down the line. Does it make a very noticeable difference?
Re: Poll: Super Mario 3D All-Stars Is One Week Away - Which Game Will You Play First?
You should put a fourth option for playing them simultaneously. Just as with the original Allstars, I'll play a few levels, save, and then jump to the next game and repeat. Part of the fun of Allstars is quickly changing games.
Before this was announced I got HD converters for both my N64 and GameCube. I started games of both 64 and Sunshine. 64 is so misjudged based on the Wii/Wii U VC releases. There's nothing like playing it on an N64 with the controller it was designed around. It always felt a little glitchy on the VC and an analog stick is a poor substitute for the c buttons. Re: Talking Point: Can Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit Possibly Be As Good As It Looks?

Re: Talking Point: Is Nintendo Making As Many Games As It Used To?
I can't speak for game development, but my Switch collection is easily as large as any console plus handheld collection I've had in the past. Nintendo seems to be doing a fine job with consistent, quality releases. I also understand that not every Nintendo developed game is going to be on the scale of BotW or SMO. With everything going on in the world this year, I can't blame Nintendo for being a little slower with releases. I have enough in my backlog to keep me busy.
Re: Talking Point: Have You Missed E3 This Year?
Being a Nintendo-centric fan, the big direct and treehouse events were sorely missed. E3 has always felt like a holiday, with excitement I rarely experience the rest of the year. It was a time I really felt connected to my fellow Nintendo fans, regardless of what was or wasn't announced. I'm not really worried about what will be released for the rest of the year. I have plenty of games to play. I just miss the hype and celebration.
Re: Soapbox: Forget Terraforming And Crafting, 'Island Hopping' Is The Best Thing About Animal Crossing: New Horizons
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (July 25th)
I'm playing Paper Mario: Origami King on Switch and Espire 1: VR Operative on Oculus Quest.
I was pleasantly surprised by how much I'm enjoying Paper Mario. The last one I played was Sticker Star and I found it very underwhelming.
Espire 1 is a super fun stealth action game. It feels like being inside Metal Gear Solid. I would recommend it to any VR enthusiast.
Re: Balan Wonderworld, A 3D Platformer From The Creators Of Sonic The Hedgehog, Is Coming To Switch
Re: Hands On: Using Dream Glass 4K Is Like Strapping A 200-Inch TV To Your Face
Hmm... I'll stick with my Oculus Quest for those sorts of experiences. It already gives me 6dof VR, as well as video streaming. The Switch works perfectly well for portable gaming without a headset.
Re: Feature: 10 Of The Most Blatant Snack Sponsorships In Retro Gaming History
I remember getting TMNT the Arcade game for NES when I was a kid. It was heavily sponsored by Pizza Hut. It came with a coupon for a free personal pan pizza and had adds strategically placed in the background sprites. It worked, as I begged my parents to order pizza upon opening up the game and finding the coupon.
Re: Super Mario Sunshine Is Now 18 Years Old
I love Sunshine. I think 64 will always be my favorite, but 3D Mario games are one of the major experiences that keep me gaming. It would be awesome to have remasters. I really hope this fabled collection is real.
Re: Feature: Best Switch Ports - The Most Impressive Ports On Nintendo Switch
I, for one, am glad these ports exist. There's no way I would have the time to play through many of these games if they weren't portable. For some of us, accessibility trumps performance.
Re: Feature: Remembering Satoru Iwata, Five Years On
He definitely made an impact on Nintendo fans as well as the videogames industry at large. I miss him. Nintendo is not quite the same without him. He really was an amazing guy.
Re: What Comes After Switch? Nintendo Discusses Plans For Future Game Consoles
Re: Feature: 8 Games That Could Really Benefit From A Modern Remake On Switch
I picked Zelda II and Kid Icarus Uprising. They're both good but flawed games that could be great. If I could only have one, it would be Kid Icarus. There's a potential top tier Nintendo series there.
Re: Review: Deadly Premonition 2: A Blessing in Disguise - A Fun Game, In Disguise
This review has really intrigued me. I'll have to give the series a try, at some point. I can wait until the first game gets a discount. Seems like both games have a lot of character.
