I have my PS3 and PSP on standby mainly for the games Konami refuses to rerelease. I would love SotN along with a Metal Gear collection on Switch. I'm honestly surprised it hasn't happened yet.
It's a shame. I love the GameCube original. I only wish more people could play it. It really was an original concept. Maybe one day we'll see a remaster or get it through NSO.
As cool as download play was for the DS/3DS, it's unnecessary and would be harder to implement on Switch. It's easy to play multiplayer either docked or tabletop. Switch games are many times larger than DS and 3DS games, so it would take forever to set up a multiplayer game. Multiplayer on Switch is already seamless with just one system.
The first videogame I played was Donkey Kong arcade. The first game I owned was Super Mario Bros. Technically, Duck Hunt too, but SMB was an instant favorite. I still play through it at least once a month or so.
That was great! I just finished watching DS9. I love all the Star Trek series, but TNG and DS9 are my favorites. I wish there were more Star Trek videogames on Nintendo consoles.
This was a really nice surprise. I have the trilogy on GameCube and PSP, but I'll gladly take a remake of the first one. I hope this means at least the second will follow.
I love NSO so far. Granted, the service is only a supplementry means of playing Nintendo's content wherever I go. I have NES via a RetroUSB AVS, and SNES via an Analogue Super NT. N64 and GameCube I keep hooked up via quality HD adapters. I have a Wii U for the rest. I also have a Super Gameboy and Gameboy Player for my Gameboy collection.
My point to all of this is don't sell your games. Look at them as an investment in your future entertainment. Even starting a collection now isn't unreasonable if it's something you really want to own. My collection isn't massive, but I have most of the heavy hitters and many obscure favorites.
Nintendo doesn't owe anyone their entire catalogue of past games. If retro games are important to you, there are legit means of owning them. Otherwise, just wait. It may take years, but most of the great titles will probably see a rerelease.
I still love NES, so I frequently play the NES NSO app when I'm away from home. I would recommend playing with the NSO NES controller, if possible. The replica controllers really add to the overall experience of NSO and elevate it above Virtual Console, in my opinion.
I'm glad Pinball was finally added. I have the Arcade Archives VS. Pinball, but it's just not the same as the NES original.
On Switch, I'm playing Dragon Quest XI and Final Fantasy VII. I guess I'm feeling the itch for turn based jrpgs. I just received Pac Man Museum +, so I'll play that and Pinball on NSO NES when I feel like a break from grinding for XP.
At home, I'll play some Pac Man World 2 on GameCube.
I remember buying TMNT II on NES with birthday money when I was a kid. It came with a coupon for a free personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut. I begged my parents to take me there that night. Fantastic game still. I still have it along with Turtles in Time and Fall of the Foot Clan. I haven't played the first NES game in many years, so it'll be fun to see if I can actually beat it now.
@the_beaver I'm a huge Dragon Quest fan. They just don't make JRPGs like that anymore. Between the Switch and 3DS, I have the whole series (sans X). I wish Final Fantasy was still that good.
I can tell Xenoblade is a great series. It just hasn't really clicked for me yet. I get halfway through and get fatigued. I wish there was an option to have old-school turn based battles. I still plan on picking up the third game, as I expect it will eventually click and I'll have a lot of content waiting for me to play through.
On Switch, I'm mainly playing through Dragon Quest XI for the second time. My first playthrough, I never got through the post game content. I'm going to shoot for finishing it this time. Besides that, I'm playing Kirby Crystal Shards and Paper Mario.
I'm not sure whether or not I'll devote any time to my retro systems at home. Maybe I'll play through Super Mario Bros on my RetroUSB AVS.
The Steam Deck seems like it makes a nice companion to a desktop, but as a stand alone hybrid, it leaves a lot to be desired. It's a foot long and weighs nearly twice as much as the Switch. It has poor battery life compared to Switch. It doesn't come with a dock or controllers. PC games are generally much larger than Switch games, so you would need a rather large micro SD to hold a sizeable collection. I have about 150 physical Switch games and 50 digital. That's not including all the classics I can play through NSO. My micro SD card isn't even half full.
Honestly, if I were in the market to play PC games on the go, I would rather have a decent laptop.
I've been looking forward to Kirby 64. I've been really enjoying the expansion service since I picked up the official N64 controller. It's only a shame that people are having a difficult time finding one. N64 games aren't nearly as enjoyable without the controller they were designed around.
I really loved Other M. The hate is undeserved, in my opinion. I wasn't going to pick it up on release because of negative feedback, but thankfully a friend bought it for me. I was very pleasantly surprised. It's not Prime or Super, but it does it's own thing while maintaining the Metroid identity. Team Ninja understood Metroid enough to make it feel like a Metroid game. Even if you don't personally like it, it will stand as a unique entry in an incredible series.
Mother 3 really deserves an official release. I have a repro cart with the fan translation, but it would be so much more convenient on Switch. I'm hoping we'll at least see it come to NSO. It would make an enticing addition to the service.
Having recently played through the original OoT again, it's still an amazing game. It created the blueprint for every 3D adventure game to follow. The dungeons are still among the best in the series. It's impact on modern 3D games shouldn't be underestimated. It's good to see it is still getting the recognition it deserves.
I have fond memories of all of Nintendo's console launches. I only started buying them on the actual launch day with the GameCube and Gameboy Advance. Earlier systems were usually birthday or Christmas presents, though I was lucky enough to get them during the launch year.
My biggest regret was selling and trading in older games in my childhood through early adulthood. Most of those are back in my collection now, but I spent more than I gained in the long run.
If you think you'll ever want to replay a Nintendo game, it's best to hold on to it.
On Switch, I'll be playing mostly NSO. Paper Mario, Starfox 64, Mario Golf, Streets of Rage 2, Donkey Kong Country, Kid Icarus and Super Mario Bros 2. I keep meaning to get back to Forgotten Land, but we'll see. I might play some Mario Party and pinball with the wife.
At home, I'll play some Starfox Adventures, DK64 and Perfect Dark.
It's really hard for me to pick a single Nintendo generation that was my favorite. I love them all and still have every system hooked up to my living room TV. There's really something to love with each console. Each one fits a specific mood and evokes a specific nostalgia. In the end, I would have to go with Switch simply because I get a little bit of everything and can take it with me, wherever I go.
On Switch I'm in Gannon's Castle on Ocarina of Time. I'm hoping to finish that up this weekend. I'm slowly making my way through Kirby and the Forgotten Land.
On GameCube I'm considering starting a new game of Chibi Robo. I might play some Perfect Dark on N64 and continue with Chrono Trigger on SNES. I also have a desire to play Bubble Bobble NES.
If I have time I might start a new game of Other M on Wii U. I'll probably put in a little time on Wario Land II on my 3DS, as well.
Lots of choices with never enough time. Have a great weekend everyone!
Kirby has always been good. Forgotten Land, however, is great. It's funny, because the core gameplay loop is pretty much the same as any other Kirby title. The presentation and the added third dimension really propel the series to new heights. The whole experience feels very polished.
I have all of the NSO controllers. They're really top notch. It adds to the experience being able to play these classics with the controllers they were designed around.
@Johnion I own the original cartridges of every game I want to play on NSO. The service is merely a convenience. I find value in that convenience. That's why I pay for it. If you don't find any value in it, don't subscribe. Simple as that.
@Johnion It's a fraction of the price they were on Wii or Wii U. What's crazy is paying for them anew with each new system. It's not like you own them either way. Eventually the servers get shut down or something happens to your console and you can't redownload them. At least with a service Nintendo is much more likely to make it available with each new system. The service itself is likely to improve with time, as well. I've already had plenty of hours of entertainment from the NSO apps, so $50 a year is worth it to me. If it's not worth it for you, just wait.
I have Wind Waker and Twilight Princess on Wii U, but I'd kill for a portable version. Hopefully, Nintendo would be willing to put both games on one cartridge.
@Funneefox I never claimed to speak for anyone else but myself. I have all of the original systems hooked up at home. NSO has near perfect emulation. There's no noticable lag. N64 needed a few updates, but Nintendo was pretty quick about fixing issues. That's the advantage of a service like NSO as compared to Virtual Console. I never thought the emulation was great on Wii or Wii U. I guess the value is just subjective. You know, like everything else.
Personally, I love NSO. It's a great service, especially with the NSO controllers. I'm playing Ocarina of Time right now and having a blast. I'm in my forties, so these games still feel relevant to me. I can understand how younger people may not see the value.
As much as I was looking forward to BotW2 releasing this year, if it means Wind Waker/Twilight Princess will finally come to Switch, I'm totally for it.
I'll mostly be playing Ocarina of Time on NSO and Kirby and the Forgotten Land. I might pick up some Goldeneye on N64 and Starfox Adventure on GameCube.
This inspired me to pickup the game again. I can only play it with the small model new 3DS. The XL is just too heavy to hold with one hand. It's still such a unique experience. I remember multiplayer being super fun, as well. I would love to see a proper sequel, or even a remaster. Maybe one day.
I, for one, thoroughly loved the demo. Enough to play through it twice, which I rarely do these days. The game looks like a blast to play through. It's been a long time since I've been excited for an upcoming Kirby game. Probably since Crystal Shards. Friday can't come soon enough.
My favorite Mario and Zelda are easily Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time. Runners up would be Sunshine, Odyssey, Twilight Princess and Breath of the Wild. While I think there are few truly bad games in either series, Spirit Tracks and NSMB2 are my least favorite.
I can see why Sunshine is poorly received. It definitely has its flaws, but I think it's fantastic once they're seen past.
On Switch, it's just the expansion pass this weekend. I just got the biggoron sword and I'm going to tackle the shadow temple in Ocarina of Time. I'll be playing Mario Kart DLC with my wife.
I think I might get back into Starfox Adventure on GameCube and Super Mario Galaxy 2 on Wii U
I think the expansion is a fantastic service. It's improved greatly since it started. The emulation is actually really good. This is coming from someone who has an actual N64 hooked up at home. Because it's a service, we'll continue to see improvement. I'm having a blast playing through Ocarina of Time, Banjo Kazooie, Paper Mario, and F-Zero to name a few. I didn't like N64 emulation on Wii / Wii U nearly as much. NSO + Expansion is turning out to be a great service for retro gaming fans. Especially with the authenticity that the NSO wireless controllers bring to playing these classics. The DLC is icing on the cake.
I've only tried the first cup so far, but I thoroughly enjoyed my time with it. I haven't played much Mario Kart in the last few years, so it's really nice to have a reason to come back. I hope we eventually get extra characters and karts. It's not a huge deal, but it would be nice.
I'm playing this through the expansion pass. With as much criticism it's getting online, I'm really enjoying it a lot. I guess it helps that I'm a huge N64 fan.
I have an english translated reproduction cartridge. I will gladly buy an official release. It's truly one of the best games I've ever played. I will continue to wait, as well.
On Switch, I'm playing Paper Mario and Banjo Kazooie. So far, I'm really enjoying the expansion pass. I already own an N64 with most of the games on the service, but I love having these games on a portable console. Tabletop with the N64 controller gives an authentic experience anywhere.
At home I'm playing Chrono Trigger, Super Mario RPG, and Earthbound on my Super NT.
@Crono1973 Of course. I was referring to just plugging in a cartridge and turning on the power. It just works. I have an SNES and a CRT. I've since moved on to HD solutions with much success.
Buying retro is an investment in my entertainment future. I also buy dvd/blu-rays, music CDs and books. I love the convenience of streaming and digital collections like NSO, but I don't want to be overly reliant on an internet connection to entertain me.
About fifteen years ago I started getting serious about building my Nintendo collection instead of reselling. I luckily got most of it when prices were low, but I'm still collecting. I won't say what I paid for my copy of Chibi Robo, but it was worth it. These are games that I'll go back to for years to come.
It may seem like an expensive investment, but once your collection gets to a certain size, you'll see a substantial return. Not in reselling, but in being able to stay in and be entertained without having to spend a dime. For the last month, I've been playing Earthbound on my Analogue Super NT on my days off. There really is something special about being able to play a game the way it was intended. I get endless satisfaction from my modest collection.
As someone who's had a Switch since launch, I still love the system. I just picked up an OLED to replace my ageing launch model and I couldn't be happier with it. The portability has gone from feeling like a convenience to being exciting. The Switch still manages to impress me. With such a large collection of fantastic exclusive software, I imagine it will stay relevant for while yet.
The first game was really a love letter to fans of N64 3D platformers. I think it was nearly as good as DK 64. They both have flaws and can get tedious, but even BK had many of those flaws. I still think the first Yooka Laylee was very enjoyable with the right attitude. I'm really glad they're going to take another stab at it.
@gaga64 I totally agree that Mario 64 is way better than BK. It's the gold standard of 3D platformers, as far as I'm concerned.
That's funny. I just started replaying Twilight Princess HD a few days ago. It's still one of my all-time favorite games. I have all three versions sitting at home. I would love to add a fourth with a Switch release.
I got the GameCube on launch day with Luigi's Mansion and Rouge Squadron II. It was the last time I was hugely impacted by the graphical leap between generations. GameCube graphics, for the most part, still hold up really well today.

Re: Nintendo Highlights Upcoming N64 Releases In Latest 'Switch Online + Expansion Pack - Overview Trailer'

I'm playing this through the expansion pass. With as much criticism it's getting online, I'm really enjoying it a lot. I guess it helps that I'm a huge N64 fan.
Re: Mother 3 Producer Would "Love To See" GBA Entry Receive A Worldwide Release
I have an english translated reproduction cartridge. I will gladly buy an official release. It's truly one of the best games I've ever played. I will continue to wait, as well.
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (January 22nd)
Have a wonderful weekend everyone!
Re: Best Of 2021: Retro Nintendo Games Cost Too Much, But Nostalgia Is Expensive
@Crono1973 Of course. I was referring to just plugging in a cartridge and turning on the power. It just works. I have an SNES and a CRT. I've since moved on to HD solutions with much success.
Re: Best Of 2021: Retro Nintendo Games Cost Too Much, But Nostalgia Is Expensive
Re: Feature: Masayuki Uemura, The Nintendo Engineer Who Helped Define The Modern Games Console
Great article! I would love to see more content like this on NL.
Re: Talking Point: 5 Reasons That Nintendo Switch Is Still A Hot Product
As someone who's had a Switch since launch, I still love the system. I just picked up an OLED to replace my ageing launch model and I couldn't be happier with it. The portability has gone from feeling like a convenience to being exciting. The Switch still manages to impress me. With such a large collection of fantastic exclusive software, I imagine it will stay relevant for while yet.
Re: Playtonic's Original Yooka-Laylee Game Is Getting A Follow-Up Title
The first game was really a love letter to fans of N64 3D platformers. I think it was nearly as good as DK 64. They both have flaws and can get tedious, but even BK had many of those flaws. I still think the first Yooka Laylee was very enjoyable with the right attitude. I'm really glad they're going to take another stab at it.
@gaga64 I totally agree that Mario 64 is way better than BK. It's the gold standard of 3D platformers, as far as I'm concerned.
Re: Anniversary: Zelda: Twilight Princess Is Now 15 Years Old (That's 105 In Wolf Years)
That's funny. I just started replaying Twilight Princess HD a few days ago. It's still one of my all-time favorite games. I have all three versions sitting at home. I would love to add a fourth with a Switch release.
Re: Talking Point: Is There A Better-Looking 20-Year-Old Game Than Star Wars: Rogue Squadron II?
I got the GameCube on launch day with Luigi's Mansion and Rouge Squadron II. It was the last time I was hugely impacted by the graphical leap between generations. GameCube graphics, for the most part, still hold up really well today.
