I've been stuck on playing nothing but 3D Mario games for the last week. I'm mainly playing 3D World, Sunshine, and I started a new game of Odyssey. I might get to Crash 4 this weekend, but I'm not always so good at predicting what I'll actually play. I'll also be watching Star Trek and reading Dostoyevsky. As always, there's always plenty to keep me occupied. Perhaps too much.
To this day, Mario 64 is still my all-time favorite game. I was a teenager when it came out and coming from 2D games, there was nothing like it. A major part of the challenge was just learning how to properly control Mario in the third dimension. Like all great Nintendo games, there were so many little secrets that made exploration so rewarding.
@MarioBrickLayer This is my second time through the All-stars version of Sunshine. I also still have the GameCube version that I used to play through regularly. Now, I don't think I could go back to the inverted camera. It's a great game no matter how you play it!
I took a break from Bowser's Fury to start a new game of Super Mario Sunshine during the week, but I'll probably go back to Bowser's Fury this weekend. I'm also slowly playing through DK64 and Diddy Kong Racing on N64 and Twilight Princess on Wii U.
This is potentially exciting news. TMNT was a big part of my childhood. I still have the original cartridges for the arcade game and Turtles in Time. If the new one is even close to being as good, it'll be an instant classic. As long as it comes to Switch, it's a day one purchase. Hopefully, it will get a physical release.
Now we need a sequel to the Simpsons arcade game. I would settle for the original, though.
I've still got about 30 shines to collect in Bowser's Fury. I'm about to finish MGS Twin Snakes on the GameCube. I've really been feeling like Zelda lately. I started new games of BotW and TP, so I'll be playing those, as well. I also started new games of Diddy Kong Racing and DK64 on my N64. Plenty to keep me busy.
As someone who has put in well over 100 hours into 3D All-stars, I definitely got my money's worth. It was an anniversary collection. Nintendo obviously has other plans for the titles. Nintendo maybe a little overprotective of their IP, but it's understandable. It's their most valuable resource. If you really want these games in this specific collection, they're widely available. Limited time releases aren't anti consumer. Especially when they're announced from the beginning as being limited.
I have a soft spot for Zelda II. I still have the original NES cartridge, but I don't have the patience or time to beat it on the original format. I had it when I was a kid, but didn't actually beat it until the 3DS VC. The music is so iconic. If any Zelda game deserves a remake, it's that one. There's a really great game hidden under the archaic mechanics. It's amazing how well the first game holds up today in comparison.
I finally started Bowser's Fury this week. I'm very impressed. It feels very different from the other exploration based 3D Mario Games. There's also a big nod to Super Mario Sunshine, which I find pretty cool.
I'm still playing Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes on my GameCube when I'm off work. It's slow going, but it scratches the itch for MGS nicely.
I have a desire to play through the original Legend of Zelda with the original cartridge on my Retro USB AVS. I want to play through all the Zelda games this year, so I'll start with the NES original.
I've been mostly playing Super Mario 3D World on Switch, with a little MGS Twin Snakes on my GameCube. I think I'll finally try out Bowser's Fury soon. Have a great weekend, everyone!
I got the Kaico hd adapter about 6 months ago and I love it. Unfortunately, I can't update it, but it's already using GCVideo 3.0, so I shouldn't have to replace it for a while. I find the artificial scanlines to be an absolute must for getting a decent picture. It's great to have all these adapters on the market.
I've been playing MGS Twin Snakes on my GameCube and Super Mario 3D World on Switch. I have 3D World on Wii U, but it's so nice to have this gem on the go. Have a great weekend, everyone!
@countzero I see your point, but I still think mobile would be a better platform than the Switch. Mobile isn't exactly a platform that has amazing controls for games, in general. Like I said in my previous comment, I would stick with the DS version.
I always thought Phantom Hourglass would be a perfect game for Nintendo to port to mobile. I don't see it working as well on Switch. It would be a great way to introduce the series to a new audience. I'll stick with the DS original, myself.
I wouldn't mind another 3D Yooka Laylee, myself. I would also love a spiritual successor to Goldeneye/Perfect Dark. The first Yooka Laylee might not be everyone's cup of tea, but it felt like a Rare N64 game. That was the point. The sequel felt like a true successor to the SNES DKC games. I can't wait to see what they'll do next.
I used to stand in line at the arcade to wait for my turn to play Street Fighter 2. There was a second monitor above the cabinet for watching matches. I mowed lawns for a summer to buy the SNES original. It's hard to believe it was so long ago. I count myself lucky to be part of that generation. It was a fun time to be a gamer.
Great article! It inspired me to fire up Super Mario Bros 2 on my Retro USB AVS. It's still a fantastic game. Super Mario Bros 2/USA was always my favorite 2D Mario. I still remember being so excited for its release. It was so different from the original in that it gave the player a lot of freedom to explore. I always felt that Super Mario 64 was a follow up in the amount of freedom it gave the player. I can't wait to play through 3D World again.
It's a shame that such a creative mind is leaving Nintendo. I love F-Zero and Starfox. Tingle was, by far, one of Nintendo's strangest characters. I hope Imamura's influence lives on in future releases.
Despite some misfires, Paper Mario is still a great series. Origami King was definitely a step in the right direction. Having just played through Thousand Year Door again, it's still the best in the series. I hope the next game will see the return of the classic turn based battles.
It's not my personal list, but they're all truly great games. SMB was my first console game and SMW was the first game I worked hard to 100%. I have good childhood memories attached to all of the older releases. SM2/USA will always be my favorite.
I'm intrigued. I have an Eon Super 64. It's not perfect, but works very well. If this truly delivers on its promise, I'll definitely pick one up. Ultimately though, I'd like to see Analog or some other company make an FPGA N64 clone.
I have the Wii U version, but I'm still really excited to pick this up on Switch. It's been a few years since I played the original and it'll be nice to play it again without having to wait for my days off to get into it. Bowser's Fury sounds like a really nice bonus.
The Switch is such a great product. It's everything the Vita should have been, plus Nintendo's stellar first party support. I couldn't go back to tethered consoles after having this much freedom with how I play. I hope they keep this model going for years to come.
I'm playing Resident Evil 2 on N64 and Resident Evil Remake on Switch. I just got into Disaster Report 4 on Switch and it's really grabbed ahold of me. I've never played anything quite like it. I'm not sure how much I'll be playing anything else for a little while.
My Wii U is hooked up, but I still want all my favorite games ported to Switch. I have much more time to play Switch over Wii U. I hope Wind Waker and Twilight Princess are brought over to Switch soon.
I like them all, but ultimately the charcoal grey is my favorite. I still have one hooked up via an Eon Super 64 adapter. I have a lot of nostalgia for the N64. It was the first console I bought myself as a young adult. I'm over the whole mini plug and play console fad, but I would still jump at an N64 mini.
I replay 3D Land often. It's my favorite 3DS game. I can't imagine playing it without the 3D effect, so I don't know how I would feel about a remake. The whole game revolved around stereoscopic 3D. It's still a joy to play and I would honestly rank it a little higher than 3D World. It looks great with the New 3DS super stable 3D. This article makes me want to play through it again.
I'm a huge Star Trek fan. I'm sick and in quarantine right now and binge watching TNG and DS9 for the millionth time.
Unfortunately, I haven't played a good Start Trek game. The 25 anniversary NES game was okay when I was a kid, but doesn't really hold up well today.
I've thought about buying Bridge Crew for my Oculus Quest but I'm a little put off by it being multiplayer only. I wish it had a single player campaign.
I could see Star Trek doing well as a point and click adventure, so hopefully we'll finally see a great game that lives up to my favorite television series.
I love Hat in Time. This looks like it's going to be another great 3D platformer. There's been so many great 3D platformers on Switch. The more, the merrier.
This is a pretty decent addition to NSO. I'm glad we finally have the complete DKC trilogy. I'm not familiar with the others, but most of them look interesting. It would have been nice to have more than one NES game, but it looks like we're getting a good one. I hope we end up getting Shadowgate, Deja vu, and Uninvited.
I used to love going to stores like this one. Unfortunately, there hasn't been one in my area in a long time. I wouldn't go right now anyway. I work with high risk clients, so it would be irresponsible to unnecessarily expose myself to covid. I'm just glad online shops like DK Oldies exist.
I still play the original two on my N64 with an Eon Super 64 adapter. I would love it they were ported over to Switch. No fancy remake required. Whatever happens with the series, I hope it makes it to the Switch/current Nintendo system. That's where it would be most appreciated.
In the meantime, I've really enjoyed Yooka Laylee. Both games are fantastic and definitely give the BK vibe.
@NintendoPete I'm probably about halfway through chapter 8. At least I think so. It's been several years since the last time I played through it. As far as Paper Mario goes, it was the perfect storm.
My favorite way to play SMB is on my RetroUSB AVS with the classic NES cartridge and Advantage joystick. Until you've seen NES games run in HD on an FPGA system, you really don't know what you're missing. It puts software emulation to shame.
I honestly think this is being blown out of proportion. I won't be surprised if Nintendo sells the Allstars games individually or adds them to NSO. It's just limited as a collection. Nintendo may want to develop Mario 35 into a full fat retail game, depending on how it preformed. The game and watch was always going to be limited. It's a celebratory collectors item. A Wii U game getting it's online multiplayer shut down isn't surprising. There's already a sequel being supported. I really don't see anything to be upset about. Personally, I'm hoping there will be a similar celebration for Zelda.
My Wii U will remain hooked up even though so many of it's exclusive games have been rereleased on the Switch. It's one of the best, if not the best systems for local multiplayer. Add Wii backwards compatibility and the virtual console and there's still plenty of life in Nintendo's most under appreciated home console.
This is excellent news! With this update, the Switch version of Sunshine is now the definitive version. I guess I won't be playing my GameCube copy anymore.
Accessibility is king, for me. I mostly only have time for Switch. I have so many games in my backlog, I'm not even concerned with anything new. My home console time is mainly for retro consoles. Right now the GameCube is my go to console on my days off. Since getting my GameCube HD adapter, it looks great on my 50 inch 4k.
@Andrew5678 I completely agree. The only thing that kept Origami King from being the best game in the series is the battle system. Even with that flaw, I'm having a blast exploring the over world.
I'm playing Origami King on the go and Thousand Year Door at home right now. They're both excellent games. I like the battle system in TYD better, but OK has better exploration. I would highly recommend Origami King to anyone on the fence. Chances are, if you enjoyed the first two Paper Mario games you'll probably enjoy OK.
Super Mario Bros 2 and Mario 64. I couldn't say how many times I've played through those games in times of stress and upset. I love playing them on their original systems, but it's nice to have them on Switch to play anywhere.
I have VII, VIII, X, and XII on cartridge, so I'll definitely be picking up IX. It's so cool that a game that used to take up multiple discs fits on a cartridge the size of a postage stamp.
I have a 3DS XL, New 3DS, and a New 3DS XL. I absolutely love the system. I still carry my small model New 3DS with me wherever I go. I have a game case that holds both Switch and 3DS games and still play my 3DS quite a bit. One of my favorite gaming memories is the first time I booted up my 3DS on launch day and saw the logo pop off the screen. I know 3D isn't for everyone, but I still find it impressive in a way that resolution and fancy graphics will never touch. When implemented well, the 3D effect is so immersive. There's just so many great games on the system too. I doubt I'll be retiring mine for years to come.
Didn't this game start out as a Switch exclusive before being announced for other platforms? If that's the case, it gives me some hope for how the Switch version will perform. I love Greek mythology and BotW, so I can't help but be excited for its release.

@NintendoPete I'm probably about halfway through chapter 8. At least I think so. It's been several years since the last time I played through it. As far as Paper Mario goes, it was the perfect storm.
Re: Random: These Nintendo Box Art Wood Carvings Are Simply Sensational
@NintendoPete Funny. I'm about to finish TYD on my GameCube via Kaico HDMI adapter. I'm playing on a 50inch 4k TV and the game still looks great.
Re: Feature: What's The Best Way To Play Super Mario Bros. In 2020?
My favorite way to play SMB is on my RetroUSB AVS with the classic NES cartridge and Advantage joystick. Until you've seen NES games run in HD on an FPGA system, you really don't know what you're missing. It puts software emulation to shame.
Re: Random: Turns Out Nintendo Might Be Right, You Can Have Too Much Super Mario Bros.
I have so many versions of SMB.
NES, SNES (Allstars), Gameboy Color, GBA, GameCube (Animal Crossing), Wii VC, 3DS VC, Wii U VC, NSO, SMB Game and Watch
Obviously, I'm a sucker for the game. It is a classic, after all.
Re: Random: March 31st 2021 Is Becoming An Increasingly Depressing Day For Mario Fans
I'm playing Origami King on the go and Thousand Year Door at home right now. They're both excellent games. I like the battle system in TYD better, but OK has better exploration. Re: Soapbox: An Ode To The 3DS, Nintendo's Workhorse Console
Re: Immortals Fenyx Rising Switch eShop File Size Revealed
Didn't this game start out as a Switch exclusive before being announced for other platforms? If that's the case, it gives me some hope for how the Switch version will perform. I love Greek mythology and BotW, so I can't help but be excited for its release.
