Another new trailer has appeared for Super Mario 3D All-Stars – you didn't expect Nintendo to just forget about it, did you?
Yes, this latest trailer shows off a decent chunk of footage for all three games set to appear in the collection – Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy – and reminds us of some of the cool new features that have been implemented for the new release.
If you're cheekily reading this at work or just can't be doing with videos, let us fill you in. Those modern features include higher resolutions for all three games, a 16:9 ratio for Super Mario Sunshine, a handy two-Joy-Con control scheme for Super Mario Galaxy, Assist play (where you can pass a Joy-Con to a friend for local co-op), and the music player featuring more than 170 songs.
We're sure we'll see plenty more of this one over the coming days during the build-up to its 18th September release. Make sure to stay tuned for our full review, where we'll offer our full thoughts on each of the three games and whether or not the compilation is worth the money.

I'll be playing a chapter of Super Paper Mario every day this week and then I'll finish it on Friday and move right on into Galaxy since it's the next game in the marathon I'm doing. 😁
"If you're cheekily reading this at work..."
Guilty as charged! I'm ashamed to admit that I've never actually played Sunshine, so I'm looking forward to my first encounter with this game.
It still amazes me how good Galaxy looks, even on the Wii it looked gorgeous
Despite already having finished all three of these games before, I'm still kind of excited for this to drop into my mailbox this Friday. Provided it doesn't get cancelled.
This collection looks so good. I just feel bad for the kids who get a switch for Christmas and save all there allowance till April and realize it’s too late...
Wahoo!!!!!! Let's a go!!
I'm curious what the idea is behind making this a limited-time thing. I mean, I get only printing a certain number of physical copies, but why limit the digital release? Just to create artificial demand?
Everyone is talking about how good Galaxy looks, and rightfully so. But can we talk about how nearly 20 years later, Sunshine still looks really good.
But more importantly, have they fixed Sunshine's camera!?
No 16:9 for M64? Is it impossible to do it in that ratio? I’m politely asking. 4:3 ratio on a 75” is awful. Borderline deal breaker.
@DanTee This is my main issue with both 64 and Sunshine. They're GREAT games! So many clever and innovative elements in both! That said, when I've tried to revisit them in recent years, the camera issues are always a real problem for me. This has been so thoroughly solved in recent recent releases, going back to the old ones feels like going from a Rolls Royce to mule. It seems like "port 'em directly" was the ethos of this collection, so I fear there won't be a fix on this. Which is a real pity...
@HotGoomba Wii was basically an overclocked Gamecube, games like Windwaker needed very little work to make look great even today. Its just a triumph of art style over pushing raw polygon numbers
@DanElectrode my guess would be that they have plans post march 2021 to add some of the games to the switch online service, especially N64. They don't want this competing with potential online subscriptions maybe?
They have done this before though, as I'm sure the Mario 25th anniversary collection on Wii was a limited release, and that didn't seem to be for any reason in particular. Either way it's achieved the desired effect of selling boat loads of copies.
Wahooooooooo
Letsa go
@Muddy_4_Ever yup, they must know thats a major complaint from the community, and the fact they haven't even mentioned it doesn't fill me with hope. 'optimised controls for switch' could literally mean anything,
Can't wait for Friday, I don't have any issues with the camera from 64 or Sunshine even if not updated so I'm all set. I think all 3 actually look really nice and Sunshine in particular has benefited from the increase in resolution
can’t wait!!!! i am playing odyssee right now until friday and will start with mario 64 then. mario time!
@DanElectrode *artificial supply
@DanTee Yeah, my guess is either that or they just don't want people to go "ah, I'll wait until it goes on sale."
And they got rid of "SO LONG GAY BOWSER." line.
I was recently playing Sunshine on my GameCube before this 35th Anniversary was announced.
I never used to have a problem with the camera, but after playing Odyssey for a long time, the Camera on Sunshine needs to be inverted (no matter how much a tried, I could not get used to it, and would move the camera in the opposite direction to what I wanted) - This became very annoying and took the fun out of the game
I really hope an option is added to invert the camera direction
Me before reading the article: Ooh NEW features!
Me after reading the article: sigh
@BoyfriendOfDeath I thought it was “So long big Bowser”
I hope they haven’t got rid of that line
@Gerald so long kinga bowser
@Gerald me too... at the time it made sense because a lot of other games had similar cameras but it has NOT aged well at all...
How does collecting Star Bits work when playing with a Pro controller? I noticed in some footage of Galaxy, the person playing wasn't bothering collecting them. Made me wonder if perhaps it's annoying to do so without pointer controls. I know the touchscreen works in handheld but I imagine that will be annoying after a while.
@mariomaster96 I definitely agree with you.
@Kreko If you don’t think about it, it’ll go by faster.
@WickedUnicarnBoi,
Of course we do not know if Nintendo plan to release these games individually on the Switch e-Shop.
Any word if they uncompressed textures on galaxy and sunshine? Mario 64 looks better with uncompressed textures.
It would have been the ultimate platformer compilation, had they included Super Mario Galaxy 2. Unfortunately their greed took over them...
@DanElectrode,
People do have around 6 months or so to get these games, the way some are carrying on you would think they were only available for a month, and we still do not know what Nintendo plans to do after the limited period ends.
@Realness I am also surpised that SM64 still runs in 4:3. But taking into account that Sunshine now runs in 16:9, they probably tried to implement this resolution also on 64. I suppose it may have caused a lot of problems so they decided to keep 4:3. However, the famous non-official SM64 PC port runs in 16:9 without any glitch so I really do not know what happened.
I already have mine preloaded.
@johnvboy Yeah, there's time. It's just kind of weird to pre-announce that the digital version will be time-boxed like this. It's the first time I've seen it happen.
"If you're cheekily reading this at work or just can't be doing with videos,..."
I feel personally catered
Thank you
Err... Sunshine does not support the game cube controller as it should be. what about the shoulders buttons? On Switch they are click button e does not have sensibility, this is going to be a disaster.
@DanElectrode,
Which is why I feel there are plans for these games on either the e-Shop or Switch online service.
@Desrever same. And I even owned a Gamecube
“This Friday can't come soon enough”
☝🏽 I say this every Monday, regardless of whether or not a Mario game is dropping.
Sunshine and Galaxy looked decent before any tweaks. Look superb now. This really is a top package of games. 64 is just pure fun.
And brings back memories of my fave TV moment on gamesmaster. 20+ years on and still makes me laugh.
I can’t be the only one to associate that game with that moment??
@Realness On a purely technical level it wouldn't be impossible - but it would, however, be very difficult to do and not strictly necessary.
The earliest first-party N64 games were written in assembly code, which in simple terms means that the studio (Nintendo, and sometimes Rare) 'wrote' the game on its purest and most optimised format possible, which was to instruct the hardware itself how it should behave. This is almost the opposite method of programming a game through typical developer tools, which is more akin to using LEGO bricks to construct a model.
Why is this relevant? Because SM64 on 3D All Stars is emulated. This means that Nintendo, like it's NES and SNES, has developed a virtual N64 console runtime that executed SM64 on the Switch.
The fact that they chose this route tells you a lot about the difficulty of programming the N64, and why it would be more of a pain to alter the game's native resolution, when the hardware itself was designed for the aspect ratio you're seeing. Put simply again, Nintendo thought it easer to simply multiple the number of pixels until it reached 720p.
But there are other factors to consider, too.
And even so, it's evident that Sunshine has compromises to reach 16:9.
If you look at the HUD, you may notice that elements such as the coin counter, Water level etc are 'squashed' horizontally. This is because in order to gain a 16:9 ratio, Nintendo actually cropped the original 4:3 image (by zooming in), changed the field of view back to its original value, and then had to move the HUD in from the sides in order to fit the screen.
Bottom line: without going to the lengths of a full remake, altering code for a 'remaster' is not without its pains.
Im cancelling my preorder, im just not a fan of sunshine and galaxy 1 is good but 2 is my favourite. Hopefully someone else can enjoy my preorder and grab a copy. More interested in 3d world as its crazy underrated
People in their mom’s basements have put more effort into Mario remasters than Nintendo. For the price, they could have polished these up more.
I'm playing Sunshine right now in 16:9 HD on the Wii. It's an ok game but too gimmicky for my taste. I miss being able to punch and kick things. It sucks having to carry a water backpack the whole game
@johnvboy I think as well some people think they'll stop working after that 6 month period, judging by some of the reactions I've seen...
I think all three games look amazing compared to their original releases. I can't wait until Friday. I haven't been this excited for a new release in a long time.
@Emperor-Palpsy thank you for that. Made perfect sense. Although, I still wished they put more effort into it. I mean, M64 changed the 3D gaming landscape forever. A remarkable achievement for a maiden voyage. I feel like they should’ve gone the extra mile. The game, is in fact, historic. Treat it as such.
Mario 64 port is the laziest thing Nintendo has done in a very long time. Such masterpiece deserved much more than that...
Sunshine, on the other hand, looks pretty good, and I'm glad is 16/9. However, as a game is just ok. Probably the worst Mario 3D game.
Honestly, only Galaxy is really worthy here, imo, and I'm not paying 60€ just for that game.
Nintendo, please, release the games separately on the eshop! And add Galaxy 2 on the way...
Why didn’t Nintendo just use their PC port of 64?
I’ve tried the switch/PC version and it looks miles better than the one they are releasing.
There’s a rumour going around that there’s a Super Galaxy 2 mention, I reckon it’s an unlock able title. If I’m wrong I’m sorry.
@the_beaver worst than mario 3d land on 3ds? Doubtful
@Tonyo Nope, that one is indeed worse XD, but it's kind of a mix between 3D and 2D, so I hesitated...
I need this so badly.
@Realness Why is that awful? It’s pixel perfect and how it was meant to be displayed. Making it widescreen for a 75” would be nice but the game‘s resolution remains 720p anyway.
You’re totally over exaggerating this problem. You will just have black bars at the sides, but with 75” you will still get a huge render.
@X68000 The PC port is recent (and also unofficial), Nintendo was likely already working on the Switch ports before that PC port was uploaded.
(Also, they would then have to re-port it to Switch.)
@Papichulo You don’t need to punch and kick things when you can just squirt them, achieving similar results. I feel you are underselling the versatility of the FLUDD, and also you don’t have it for the whole game.
The real problem with Sunshine is the often phoned-in level design; they waste too much space with open, flat areas. You really should have been able to utilize the vertical jets on more stages.
@Antraxx777 I may in fact be over exaggerating it... but, when you got a top of the line Samsung QLED, not using every square inch of that marvelous screen feels like sacrilege. Anyone in the same boat as me can probably attest to this. I’ll admit it, 1st world problems...
@RPGamer I don't think I will love Galaxy to be honest... because I've already loved it since the day it came out! 😁
I want a Paper Mario collection too. I even want it to have Sticker Star and Color Splash.
@BoyfriendOfDeath I don’t see how bowser can be considered fully gay as he’s obsessed with peach. Instead, I prefer to think of him as bisexual & imagine his ultimate fantasy as being in the middle of a Mario and Peach ‘sandwich’.
when Nintendo said gameplay tweats, i hope it means that Nintendo will have fixed the Blue Coins in Super Mario Sunshine.
Really hits that sweet spot between familiar and unfamiliar; I know how to play Sunshine and Galaxy, but it's been a pretty long time and it will be good to visit those games again.
i never owned 64 or galaxy 1, and my dad sold sunshine when i was little. im so glad to finally pick these up!
@jimtendog if it's called shopto, I'd be worried. If I were you I'd stick with best buy
@andykara2003 what can i say except delete this!
@andykara2003 doesn't matter. I love that joke and I get pissed off whenever censorship happens.
@BoyfriendOfDeath
@WiltonRoots,
You will be on the most difficult task on Sunshine, tried over a hundred times, finally got it and grabbed the shine, then the game will shut down, honest I have read this on the internet.
Are the games even being rendered in native 1080p?
