When Super Mario 3D All-Stars was announced last week, Nintendo made it very clear it would be a "limited release".
Now, online retailer Base.com (located in the UK) has apparently been forced to "cancel all orders" as Nintendo and its distributors within this region are unable to provide any reassurance that more stock will become available after release.
ResetEra user and Nintendo Life user Geobros shared the message they recently received from Base, while also noting how they were "one of the first buyers there" and ordered the game on 4th September (the day after the game was announced).
"We have just been notified of our allocation of Super Mario 3D All-stars (Nintendo Switch) and it is woefully short. This is very disappointing and it is with great regret that we have to inform you that we will be unable to fulfil you [sic] order on the day of release. Further, as Nintendo and their UK distributers [sic] are unable to give us any reassurance that more stock will become available after release, we have taken the regrettable decision to cancel all orders."
It's worth noting physical pre-orders are still available elsewhere in the UK. There's also the digital version, too.
This follows on from last weekend when it was discovered scalpers were already attempting to resell their own copies of the game on eBay, along with the news the 3-in-1 collection had become the second best-selling game of this year over on Amazon.

And so it begins
And yet they’ll be someone who gets 5 copies and shoved them straight on eBay for £150
I'm starting to experience quite strong FOMO symptoms, but I still haven't pre-ordered.
@popey1980 In my experience they're almost always employees or an employee got it for them.
Yep, I got this email too. Annoyingly, Simply Games were charging the same price when I pre-ordered from Base, but they've put their price up £5 now.
Edit: As lots of people here are suggesting that Base is some no name retailer that shouldn't be taken seriously, I'd like to say that I buy almost all of my physical games from them and they have never let me down before. They always have much better prices than Game and Amazon and have provided me with plenty of Nintendo's first party titles without issues before. Just because you don't shop around for the best prices online, doesn't mean sites you haven't heard of aren't trustworthy.
@farmer_humpf : I've been meaning to pre-order three copies, but I keep delaying it. It's too late in the day to do it now (as I want to do it in-person for pick-up) but tomorrow shall be the day, then.
Nintendo aren't going to be prioritising small online retailers when it comes to stock, I'm friends with a game shop owner on Facebook and he's been allocated more stock than he was expecting. Also the Nintendo store still has them as does Amazon and Game so its hardly that difficult to buy
I see people using this as a way to say "Gotcha Nintendo! This shouldn't be a limited release!'
1) Nintendo can do what they want with games on their catalog
2) This BASE store isn't the only thing smoking in the UK as I'm aware that according to some of my UK buddies, they had no clue what BASE was and Amazon UK as well as GAME is taking pre-orders according to them.
3) Don't expect lesser known retailers to have a huge amount of stock of this game.
good job I swapped my pre-order from base a while back XD just waiting for Olympus to fall now
@JuiceMan_V I live in the UK and buy a lot of games but this is the first time I've even heard of Base. There's places like this and Shopto which are run on a shoestring budget and are pretty tiny retailers compared with the likes of GAME
I assumed Base was a scam site lol. Does anyone use them?
I just double-checked my order on Best Buy to see if it’s still valid and it hasn’t been canceled yet so there’s a chance it might just be a UK issue.
@PcTV Agreed, employees getting first dibs on new products coming in shouldn’t be a thin and it also affects some collectable markets, I know Funko (BOO! HISS!) has the same issue when it comes to certain big box retailers. Unfortunately, this issue won’t change unless people throw a REALLY big stink about it on social media sites like Twitter and Reddit.
@carlos82 Seconding that sentiment on smaller stores getting less stock than large chains. When Hidden Fates, a Pokémon TCG set that’s exclusive to value products like boxes and tins, was announced my local LGS was only allowed to order 1-2 cases of product.
@carlos82 I started buying games off Base a good few years back when I first got my Vita. Companies like Shopto, Base and The Game Collection offer some big discounts and I've always had good service from them.
@GrailUK Yes, I've used them quite a big.
@Northwind fair enough, I'm banned from Shopto anyway because the game I ordered never got delivered and they never responded to any communication from me or PayPal, yet from their perspective thats somehow my fault. I'd never use any of these small online retailers ever again
According to their website Base have been trading since 2001. I am sure I bought from them when they were dvd.co.uk or something like that as I remember going to the site and sent me to base.com.
Thankfully the ability to pre-order is available in a lot of places still, as long as you're willing to pay retail.
This news only makes me glad I pre-ordered one from Best Buy and one from Amazon. As long as one of them comes through, I'll be happy. I do hope I get both though. This is certain to become quite the collector's item. I hope everyone who wants a physical copy will be able to get one without resorting to scalpers.
We always hear these stories positioned this way around - retailer moaning at publisher for not receiving enough stock.
How about retailer secures stock from publisher and then sells the stock they have?
Base literally sold something they didn't have. Are they a retailer or a drop shipper I wonder?
Now I know why Nintendo always failed in the European market compare to their rival Sega. If their normal releases failed them, limiting crap on a market they often failed will not do them any good.
@carlos82
Just more confirmation to me that this story is overblown and being used as clickbait.
They are blaming Nintendo for selling more stock than they received. While I question why Nintendo isn't shipping more, I don't consider them at the wrong here. Don't take more orders than you can meet.
I expected this to happen with this release. That's why I am going digital for this one. I'd prefer physical, but I'd rather be sure I can get the game at all.
Can still preorder direct from Nintendo in UK -
https://store.nintendo.co.uk/nintendo-switch-game/super-mario-3d-all-stars/12690751.html?affil=thggpsad&switchcurrency=GBP&shippingcountry=GB&&source=ppc&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIucu0w4vj6wIVlu3tCh3qcwSKEAQYASABEgIy6fD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds
Honestly, I’m glad this was a half-effort and shoddy product from Nintendo so I have no desire to fight to try to get a copy. That they couldn’t even be bothered to us the DS version as a basis and/or fix the camera speaks volumes.
@farmer_humpf Ha, you aren't going to catch me out. You must be a scammer too because of the typo! (hehe)
@GrailUK I've used them many times with no issues. this is all nintendos fault. they have royally f#$÷ed up on this. I had my pre order with base. I now will no doubt have to pay more for it now if go somewhere else
Normally I'll go through shopto or Base but for this I went directly to Nintendo just for this type of reason.
F to everyone effected, although stock is still available on the Nintendo UK site so it's not as limited as it seems (and definitely not a Scalpers paradise).
Gonna be gutted if this doesn't arrive from Amazon next Friday.
@farmer_humpf I've used Shopto once and its the worst service I've ever had
@Northwind
Very long rebuttal.
That statement made by myself is geared towards those folks trying to use this as a weapon to bolster their distain because the game is indeed limited....(And Nintendo never had limited anything before amIrite? 🤔)
But hey, like you say, people can complain and say whatever they want just like I can 🤷♂️
I feel sorry for the fans who really want physical and can't find a copy.
However, I decided a while ago that the convenience of digital is more important for me than having a physical box, disc or cartridge. I even used to collect games and bought some retro games for high prices a few years ago (SMRPG and Chrono Trigger SNES for ~€80,-).
Now I have a wife and kids and al my (retro) gaming stuff (consoles, games, boxes, manuals, collectibles, etc) are stored in the attic.
I already have 3D Allstars preloaded on my Switch and I'm really glad I don't have to worry about physical stuff anymore. In the end the only thing that matters to me is the actual game.
I imagine they’ll be lots of disappointed crybaby men next Friday when their copy doesn’t arrive in the post.
I'm not taking much stock in Base's email.
A friend of mine once preordered Pokemon Sword from them and they cancelled it and sent an email blaming Nintendo. Yet that game was stocked elsewhere fine!
I'm sure Mario 3D All Stars is more limited, but I managed to order from Amazon and then switched over to The Game Collection (so I could get those points they offer) with no problems on availability.
@JuiceMan_V pretty much, I've seen countless videos on YouTube about it too and of course the awful news that Mario 64 looks like Mario 64. Worst case scenario people can just buy it in the eshop anyway but I'll be very surprised if I can't walk into a shop next week and buy this
Feel sorry for everyone who pre-ordered on base.com...
I have actually used them regularly in the past with no problems, but in this case they will have dissapointed a lot of people..
With my Base order cancelled I've begrudgingly switched to the UK Nintendo store. This is the first Switch game I'll have paid more than £40 for and I'm kinda salty as I don't feel it's a game that's actually worth more than forty quid. I know it's my choice and I could just not buy it, but I have trouble letting go where Mario is concerned.
Here we go again...
Oh Nintendo why do you make life so difficult?
Whe they said it was a limited release I ordered from Nintendo. Figured they would keep their own orders and cancel others first.
Here we go again!!! In the UK there are still preorders available from Nintendo, Amazon, Argos and more! Base is not a big retailer, this is not unheard of and just a knee jerk reaction from a small outlet.
Nintendo are getting criticised for hypotheticals..... let's wait and see in the coming weeks and inparticular 6months.
Limited release is Limited- quit the moaning.
I had a feeling something like this was going to happen. This is why I cancelled my first order and ordered from the Nintendo store itself as soon as it was up. Even though I use the online stores occasionally it seemed like a big part of this whole approach to the 3D collection was to control the price and stop the various sites from undercutting the official store, which they often do even with 1st party titles.
Nintendo can damage a lot of customer faith in these sites by putting them in a position where the can't fulfil their pre-orders. Either that or the whole thing has been poorly thought out and managed... Yeah, it's probably just that.
@status-204 True it's not Base's fault, unfortunately however many won't see it that way...
@Northwind Maybe they would just prefer people don't buy the product instead of endlessly whinging about how they don't like it? And as for it being limited edition, most of the people moaning about it have no intention of buying it after March! 🙄 People who post on Nintendo sites and Reddit subs aren't going to wait that long!
@JuiceMan_V Sorry but I stopped listening after "Nintendo can do what they want"
You can't just defend rubbish behaviour based on 1970's parenting tactics, like that's what you say when your dad doesn't let you have a burger king or something, not when a major company goes out of their way to make people miss out on an overpriced and incomplete collection of roms
I've used Base many times and although I'm not getting this game I think if their Nintendo supplier can't guarantee their full pre-order amount they can't offer the cheaper price as they buy in bulk. So have had to cancel all orders as a result.
Also with the launch being so close to the direct this will have a knock on effect on the amount of units available to all shops, whether online or not.
Although Limited surely Nintendo will make more physical stock available in the run up to Christmas?
@LilMuku Why do you even care if people miss out if you consider the game nothing more than an "an overpriced and incomplete collection of roms?"
@Northwind I did say most, not all! And it's inevitable Nintendo will sell the games separately after and probably re-release the collection. You'll also be able to find it second hand no doubt. 👍
Sigh. Silly Nintendo. Always looking for a new way to annoy fans
@LilMuku
You don't gotta lie to me...
You read the whole thing and didn't like it, which is cool 🤷♂️
Nintendo isn't going out of their way for anything.
They told you the game is limited based on what it was and you have till March to buy it.
You're free to dislike it
@Northwind My comment wasn't aimed at you personally and sorry if I came across as rude. I hope your job situation improves.
@GrailUK Base is definitely a reliable online store. I've used them a few times. Due to the sites ease of navigation over say Amazon, I've found that they're a good online store for reasonably priced obscure physical Switch games.
@Patendo No, Nintendo is not above criticism.
@JuiceMan_V It’s interesting to see you defend Nintendo so hard. You work for ‘em?
It possible I'd order from the official uk Nintendo store to guarantee yourself a copy even if it costs a little more. If there out of stock then keep checking regularly.
@TG16_IS_BAE
Why are you so angry about what I'm doing? 🤔
@JuiceMan_V No anger, it’s a simple question. Can you answer it?
I hate to say it but this is another shady and anti-competitive move by Nintendo.
Like the article states, my £44.95 pre-order at Base has been cancelled due to ‘under allocation’ by Nintendo. A similar thing has happened to pre orders at Shop-to who had the game for £42.85.
Minimum Retail Prices (MRP’s) are illegal in the UK (and most of Europe I believe) as they are seen as anti-competitive. Manufacturers are not allowed to control a market.
Yet by forcing consumers to use either the Nintendo UK store or Amazon, Nintendo are effectively trying to do just that.
It’s telling that I can still make a pre-order with Amazon at £49.99 isn’t it? No ‘under allocation’ issues there…
This is the second instance of Nintendo acting anti-competitively this year, with the removal of game download vouchers from retail stores also being an attempt to price fix in the UK market.
I was prepared to give Nintendo the benefit of the doubt regarding the limited time release of 3D All Stars but now see the move for what it really is.
I won’t be reordering the game on principle and for the first time in my life am considering using an emulator such as Dolphin to play these games.
It almost makes me hope that the Switches successor is a massive Wii U sized flop.
@6thHorizon Definitely anti-consumer, didn’t know Nintendo was this harsh on their UK fan base.
@TG16_IS_BAE
Your question is dumb and you deserve the answer you got 🤷♂️
@JuiceMan_V Ah, so you have nothing to back your trolling, and know you’re doing something wrong when called out on it. Typical.
I’m just going to go digital for this. Got some credit on my account and will be nice to have it on the card to dip in and out of it anytime without having to mess around with carts.
@TG16_IS_BAE
Trolling?
Lol! Not sure what time it is where you're from, but have a good night/day, buddy ✌️
Diverted to a German Amazon copy (hate their large age rating logos). No supply at the normal local preorder taking shops.
@TG16_IS_BAE read my comment properly! Critisism should come when there is reason, not hypothetically. Wait a few weeks or 6 months then if Nintendo have acted in a way you wish to critic go ahead. Get the facts together first.
@Patendo Criticizing N for doing a limited release is hardly dealing with hypotheticals.
@Clyde_Radcliffe Why do I care if people miss out on something they care a lot about, despite the fact that I personally think It's a lazy cash grab?
Oh I don't know, maybe because I understand that even though I think It's rubbish, other people might love it and really want it. There's this amazing thing people have called an "opinion" where they can have thoughts or feelings on something, and It's completely different to how someone else may think or feel about the same thing!
@GrailUK I use base. They are cheap but often slow. They don’t take any money until the order is dispatched and if they can’t dispatch within a few days they will cancel the order.
Im surprised at the number of people thay havent heard of base (you really should check them out)
Ive been using them since play.com,zavvi were really popular (before shopto/365 games)
I dont really buy new releases of them but when it comes to that obscure game that just didnt sell very well.......they tend to get a load of stock and sell at really low prices.
Its great site to snap up a bargain that you never knew you wanted.
Hmm, good thing I got my copy digitally then!😌
@Burntbreadman
Totally agree. Paid 12 quid for Victor Vran shipping included!
@JuiceMan_V @carlos82 Honestly, Base came up on google instantly for me when searching price comparison for Switch games and I remembered my sister mentioning it also, the prices are very competitive and considering surely everyone must price compare at least now and then I can't imagine that the site hasn't been growing.
I heard on some podcast that scalpers are posting on ebay $100 for physical copy already. I have yet to look for myself to verify.
I can confirm, as they cancelled my order yesterday. Its a shame as I like Base and they were cheap, but I guess I will be paying a bit more to get it elsewhere.
If Base have short stock I wouldn't be surprised at all if ShopTo has major stock issues. They were the UK retailer the majority of people were using due to having the lowest price, and are about as well known as Base. They probably had the same allocation. I don't use ShopTo because in mine, and other people's, experiences if you cancel a preorder you have already paid for with them they don't send the item, but keep your money unless you contact their customer services and demand it. They told me that it is their policy only to carry out refunds on request, but I don't see a more obvious request than an order cancellation.
@LilMuku Fair enough.
@Northwind
Thanks
Surprised how many people haven't heard of base.com, been buying from them for years and they seem to be regularly the cheapest site for a lot of Switch games.
Like other people said about Shopto, base also pick up cheap copies from over in mainland Europe, the last game I got from them was a 'SCN' (Scandinavian?) version for example.
Wouldn't be surprised if that means they're just one customer over in whatever country they buy their games, and the stock issues come from whoever they ordered from.
@6thHorizon why would Nintendo or any company for that matter not prioritise their biggest customers such as Amazon? Its nothing to do with being anti consumer just because a couple of small retailers have tried to undercut everyone else by selling stock they haven't even got yet.
I almost preordered with Base myself - I’ve used them a lot in the past for preorders since they usually sell games for £5-£10 cheaper than Amazon - but I ended up going with Nintendo UK instead to make sure my order did not get cancelled because of stock issues (which I figured were likely to happen because of the limited release thing). Sure glad I paid that extra fiver now.
Asked my local place last week, it is indeed a one print run, and physical copies are going to be scarce.
@Crockin disappointing if that is the case, did they mention where they got that info from?
@Northwind yep lol trying do 3 things at once as usual
I originally pre ordered with Amazon but later cancelled it and pre ordered with Smyths instead.
With smyths I can pick it up when the shop opens rather than curtain twitching all day waiting for Mr Post man (assuming amazon deliver on the day or release)
Just hope Smyths don't cancel and I end up regretting canceling my first order
@bluesun Where did you find "SCN" noted on items that you have ordered from ShopTo? I am genuinely curious.
I am a physical collector and keep all boxes.
I have checked my games from ShopTo and this is what I see.
Game Box: UKV
Game Cartridge: EUR
@6thHorizon Have shopto actually cancelled orders? Mine seems to be still live.
Don’t get why people don’t order from big retailers who clearly have better connections and money so that these things don’t happen. Pre ordered from “Game.co.uk” and I don’t see any problem of them not having enough
Yes I was a Base customer but not one of the first 100. That was all the units they were allowed.
Base said Nintendo approved their ad for marketing and new they had pre orders way in excess of 100. But they were told by Nintendo that 100 was all they could have and were not able to say if they would get anything further.
Base could only think the reason was because they are a small business and Nintendo wanted copies for the big retailers.
But we know Nintendo are playing a marketing game and in my books they are no longer the friendly, lovable, Disney type company they try to portray themselves as.
I guess a lot of fans will try and justify this for Nintendo. But reality is that only Nintendo know why this is happening and we the consumer can only judge on evidence.
My order could not be met, Nintendo refused to say why this was and I guess other retailers are not being getting given enough copies to met a demand that Nintendo have created themselves.
Surly every Mario fan who wants a physical anniversary copy should be able to buy one.
@Kid_Sickarus idk I'm guessing Nintendo of america
I havent had an issues with my pre-order, because I got it on the eShop.
@Alundra-1998
SCN was on Sonic Mania Plus, the outer box + case. It surprised me too as I hadn't seen a SCN code before. I have had some UKV cases, but also EUR (purple triangle, may mean there just isn't a UKV), and UXP (yellow) from them too.
I pre-ordered from Nintendo Official UK Store so am assuming mine will be ok. Have used Base before and not had any problems but never used them for a pre-order.
If I wasn't able to get hold of the physical version I would eventually buy digitally.
I'll stay cautious, with this I have a feeling the big retailers like GAME will have allowed more preorders than stock and there's a load of cancellations on Monday.
@chardir mine’s still live too, as far as info from shopto shows anyway. I know a lot of people who ordered got concerned at the slow speed at which pre order confirmations were sent.
If mine gets cancelled then I wont be chasing around looking for a replacement, £43 was the absolute top of what I felt the package deserves.
@Mark_C I ordered 3D Allstars from wherever I could at the time. Buying Sunshine second hand alone would be around £30 so that helped me to justify buying. Guess I'm trying to kind of hold on to old games in case my GameCube packs up eventually and of course I'm a sucker for Mario.
@bluesun That is quite interesting.
Your Sonic Mania Plus has "SCN" denoted on the outer box of the game and my Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz is "SCN"
This is my collection and what it stated on each box.

@Kid_Sickarus Thanks.
I just hope that Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz was only released in the UK as a SCN version or I have been sent it incorrectly.
I am quite OCD for UK versions. XD
I have used base many times, normally very good prices on new releases. However on this release I wanted to pre order straight away and it wasn't up on base at the time. Did it through the Nintendo UK store. Lucky for me. I did note it was only 10p cheaper on base when it did appear, normally around 3-5 pounds cheaper. Bit of a mess all round
I preordered at Best Buy US. Order status was ok last time i checked.
I've never heard of a store cancelling all orders.
Scalpers are like vicacious sharks honestly, total savages 😡😡😡
Yeah...thats me and I am a little bit disappointed.
It downloaded yesterday on my Switch, I am not worried about the quantity.
@TG16_IS_BAE cry me a river! Moaners gonna moan either way. Enjly your saltyness
That's weird. GameStop let my roommate make THREE pre-orders just yesterday afternoon. It took a bit to process though.
@Patendo Hey, you’re choosing to participate in a public discussion, trolling isn’t recommended, try something else.
Now the fun part starts.
@TG16_IS_BAE haha trolling? Give me a break.
@Northwind what's an orangeball? Don't you mean Terry's chocolate orange?
@Northwind pretty sure mario all stars on wii was limited
@huyi I don't know where you are from, but in America most people associate the word savage with cool lol
@popey1980 what do you mean "there will be someone"? It's not difficult I could go on amazon right now and order 30 if I wanted to
@Patendo Yep, cool it down bro.
@TG16_IS_BAE errrr alrighty then!
@Bebby people will miss out if there’s a shortage because unscrupulous jerks will look to make a profit by selling extra copies at massive mark-ups, like Amiibo and the mini consoles. I didn’t think my first comment was too difficult to understand
@popey1980 and sadly, nintendo knows this & enables it. I wish there was a limit of 1 per physical address along with all kinds of limitations, but all of those can be worked around if ppl know they can make money off of finding a way to do it. The short supply is the problem. There should be no online orders IMHO. Make ppl go in person & only allowed to buy 1 per official ID, or something along that nature. The ppl who buy & resell usually don't even play videogames...
I normally pre-order with base myself and nearly did so for this release, however whilst other places including Amazon were open for pre-orders & base did not. I ordered with Amazon, Nintendo and did a cheeky pre-order with shop to. There was a time that pre-orders arrive on the Thursday, I’m interested if this happens next week. I’m looking forward to this release.
@Aubrey663 they cost more & use questionable means to crush competition (which is always good for the consumer), so it's also a moral decision for many.
Thank goodness I orderd from amazon
@Aubrey663 That's why I order form amazon.
I am shocked.
It's not like Nintendo has a history of manufactured scarcity, nor has anyone been pointing this out during the 3D all stars limited availablity conversation.
Nostradamus couldn't have seen this coming.
@Geobros I've updated the story to mention that you're a Nintendo Life user as well.
Can someone explain to me the point of doing a "limited release" of a video game? Making limited numbers of collectable nicknacks to sell with special edition preorders makes sense because they can arbitrarily charge a huge premium for worthless plastic, but the software itself? Even limiting physical releases makes some sense, but am I understanding correctly that they're limiting the digital release as well? It's just one more inexplicable decision from nintendo showing how out of touch they are. I'll just put this in the bucket with never putting games on sale, online support circa 2000, attacking youtubers, and not fixing joycon drift after years of knowing about it 🤦♂️
@Nookingtons same.
@LittleZ don't expect an actual answer.
Most people just say because that's Nintendo.
Really it seems like a way to generate money before next gen consoles come out and Nintendo gets forgotten in the mainstream for a while.
Does this effect amazon?
@farmer_humpf well, it should be easy enough to get a digital copy if all else fails. Unless.... unless Nintendo's all like "Uh oh! We ran out of digital copies!" But that would never happen, right? Right?!
@Liam_Doolan You did well. I am older member in Nintendo Life than Resetera anyway.
@Snatcher @Snatcher the article just shows its affecting one online retailer. Of course, other retailers could get a similar message from Nintendo, but considering how big Amazon is, I bet they were "allocated" many copies. Still, at this point, I'm not positive anyone will for sure get their pre order. Soooo, long story short: maybe? Lol I really don't know, hopefully we all can get the game
I’m having flashbacks of when Wal-Mart canceled everyone’s SNES mini preorders cause they said they went up too early. Though this situation is a little different. So sorry if this happened to anyone here.
@Ghostchip ok time to get all nerdy and technical! Yeah, as a adjective savage can mean cool but as a noun it's meaning is less than flattering lol its all in the context my friend
I'm not expecting to recieve my order this week, I'm expecting to be like when I pre-ordered a NES Classic and two months of "we'll send when its in stock" I had to cancel it as I lost interest.
Im planning on getting this, just not now. I felt confident that the game will be produced from here until april 2021 so no rush. But im seeing to many articles regarding the canceled orders, short stock etc. I wonder i can manage to get one from retail in, lets say 4-5 months.
Just to be clear, so far the only site that has cancelled preorders is a website I have never heard of before?
Nintendo hardly puts out a first party game this year, then announces this game is only available until March of next year knowing there’s gonna be huge demand for it.... what a f**king joke 🙄 headed back to the Wii U days at this rate...
Yikes. I preordered early on Amazon, hoping I get a physical copy.
@popey1980 Yeah, that's what happens when a company like Nintendo announces a limited release (even a limited digital release). What could be more tempting to a scalper?
@idrawrobots the world doesn’t revolve around you, kiddo.
I am shocked!
Shocked!
Well... not that shocked.
Here's an idea, pre-orders shouldn't be allowed. Make people walk into the store and buy games on launch day. Limit it to 2 copies per customer.
Pre-orders have always been a cancer.
Definitely going digital here....or wait until they get in stock.
This is very bad. I ordered much later and at a different retailer. I hope I still get it, maybe a bit later. As long as I get it.
@DoktorTotenKopf no worries, baby.
You would think with all the Free upgrades people getting for PS5 / XSX. Nintendo would at least give a free copy of the one people bought on WiiU virtual console.
Wouldn't that be a great way to celebrate both Mario and the fan base that supported the company even during the crap years.
But instead lets do this circus, and milk them yet again or toss them to the scalpers
Still available everywhere here in the States except for Amazon. As others noted too, still available directly from Nintendo UK.
This might be the first time Im glad that people in my country dont give two about nintendo so I should get it no problem
@Northwind Such limitations aren't really "a thing" at this point, since games on the Switch aren't region-locked.
We have two NSW in my household, and this results in some physical games being bought twice -sometimes getting a "PAL" copy saves quite a bit of cash. Aside from just being COMPATIBLE with NTSC systems, in many cases I've found that the cartridge/card inside the box is even the same ID in both regions -its literally 100% identical, or sometimes just has a different label with the appropriate ratings board icon.
Great way to save some cash nowadays.
Oh dear... I hope they restock it for those who pre-ordered. Cause one thing is not being able to buy something that's in limited quantities, and the other is not getting something that you bought before.
Could be worse, could be the Avengers game. There's loads of copies of that monstrosity available for those who want to punish themselves 😂
@LittleZ @LittleZ I feel that there may be a new virtual shop that will sell versions or a new online membership 64, GC & Wii facilty like the Nes/Snes or a brand new Switch in March. Only reason I feel they would reduce the sales they can make. No reason to stop making money from a game unless there is a plan in the background causing it.
@Northwind
I'm not familiar with ShopTo, I generally just end up getting PAL games either because I see them cheaper from Europe on Amazon.co.uk/eBay.co.uk, or because someone here in the USA has already imported them cheaper in bulk and is reselling them for less than standard NTSC copies. I've got about 80 physical release games at this point, and a quick glance of the cases shows that 14 of them have been PAL copies. It's not a majority by any means, but it definitely comes up sometimes. ^_^
@idrawrobots grow up.
Screw. Nintendo.
@JuiceMan_V stop pretending like Nintendo is just like everyone else in limiting stock. They are in a league of their own. And by limiting even the digital release, there aren't any rational excuses left.
@Agramonte this is exactly why Im not an early adopter anymore. They couldn't care less about their biggest fans
@zool I wouldn't use Disney as a an example of lovable company either after what they did with Mulan.
Ayup, called it.
Spoke to a friend who works at a big electronics retailer around here and he said they can't even stock it because there's such a massive shortage of it.
The physical version will be mostly scalper material.
Seriously who thought that this was even a good idea, you would think Nintendo would have learned their lesson with scalpers when it came to the switch. Also, there really is no good reason they could pull out there behind for why this had to be a limited release anyway.....
I wanted a physical copy as they are usually cheaper than online. I did want the box and, a little collection on one cartridge is nice. I ended up paying way over the odds for Ring Fit because it was always sold out, I can see thins happening with 3d all stars too. Maybe digital is the way so go.

end transmission
Good thing I don't want it. Already played them.
@NoobishEli So that gamers can peruse other games rather than just the classic Mario ones.
@backup368 Um no, that makes no sense at all. As a company, Nintendo cares the most for there home IPs(Like all other gaming companies). Them selling these games on a newer console means more money for them. Especially since re-releases have been so popular. And yes if they wanted to do a half-ass statement to say that it is limited physically because it for a special anniversary event then fine, but limiting the time for digital makes absolutely no sense and can't be explained any other way then classic Nintendo stupidity.
@NoobishEli Well the NES and SNES classic were made in limited quantities. Had they made as many as possible that would have affected their new hardware and software sales. It's possible for people to just buy the cheap retro plug and play and never pick up another Nintendo product again. In the case of the NES classic, that was at a time in which in Wii U was faltering and third parties were skeptical of supporting the Switch.
@BadWaluigi
Not so sure why y'all are having a hard time with this.
They (Nintendo) wanted compile the game for Mario's 35th Anniversary and says it's limited....you know why.
If you don't like it, well tough cookie, but Nintendo is allowed to have limited releases like everyone else does.
@backup368 okay nvm you are not seeing the point. Forget that they are even releasing a physical version because that's not the point. Limiting the time to buy a digital version of a game is just plain dumb. Especially if they don't like people to emulate their games. Limiting a physical release is fine companies do it all the time, but doing that to a digital release to a new console is just plain dumb.
@NIN10DOXD at least they take your money with a smile.
This is just going to fuel the ebayers
@Heavyarms55 have you ever heard of GameStop perchance? They didn't get that memo.
Also, Reggie's on the board.........................
@NoobishEli Maybe it gives consumers the urge to download it.
@backup368 nah not for the long term tho, espicially since you have to remember the switch is still in high demand and Nintendo can't keep stock with all the scalpers. And then the added bonus of people not having money with the pandemic and all. If they don't have a switch by the end of the buying period then they miss out. For people who have a switch right now and can buy right away it not a problem. But overall its just classic Nintendo anti-consumerism tactics. It's like Nintendo wants people to keep pirating a emulating there stuff lol. Even though they were the company who did the most work with taking the big rom sites down.
@NEStalgia I haven't shopped at a Game Stop in years. But how could I not know them?
@Heavyarms55 i was being sarcastic.... But overselling is their entire business model.
Base were always known for selling games a little cheaper than other retailers, this could be why Nintendo don't want to supply them as they want to be seen as a "Premium" product
Either that or watch out for news tomorrow from Smyth's, Amazon and GameStop
Really? Wow. I literally JUST pre-ordered that game at Gamestop.com. Of course, I'm in America🤔 If it gets canceled, I'll just by it digitally like I do most of my Switch games🤷🏾♂️ Not really a big deal
Yep I got the cancellation email 😭
@BionicDodo same, bought loads from them with no problems before and decent prices
@NEStalgia As a consumer, I prefer that to supply shortages. shrug
Never heard of base.com. Why not base.co.uk?
Anyway. I've been buying games for 20 years now and I live in UK. Yet I never heard of them. I mean, what else can I say?
@NoobishEli they have until March if they want to download it.
@backup368 Yeh, I'm done with this conversation, you are definitely not even reading what I'm saying, or even trying to add to the convo. Yes of course we know they have until march to download but that's the problem. If someone is in the situation(which is very prevalent right now) in which they don't have the money for the game or console by march, then they lose their chance to buy the game simply because Nintendo thought to limit the sale of a digital game. March is in 6 months, maybe in your little bubble you have the money to splurge on anything you want, but right now there are a lot of people that don't have the money to be able to buy things that aren't necessities and they should not have to miss out on a game just because the company is too stupid to understand why a limited digital release is stupid. Especially for a game that you really can't get right now unless you either A. emulate or B. Buy an old console to play the games on, but even then why does someone have to go with a lower version of something just because a company shafted them. Makes no sense.
@Heavyarms55 overselling is a supply shortage. GameStop, like this store, routinely sells beyond the maximum of the possible range of shipments they will be alotted so they can pressure the mfr for more. They use preordering consumers add bargaining chips, and give a cancellation email when it fails.
@NEStalgia Oh, I misunderstood. Yeah, that's BS. Before COVID airlines used to do that crap. It pissed me off.
@Northwind
Are you sure ShopTo buy copies from other European countries? Everything I’ve ever bought from ShopTo has the green triangle on the spine and the UK PEGI ratings, suggesting it’s made for UK release. I also feel like this would mean their prices would fluctuate, but they’re a pretty stable £42.85.
Only asking because that would annoy me if my shelf has a different coloured triangle!
@LilMuku
Yes but your sounding like the 'youth of today' who expect everything to be on a plate for them.
Neither situation is perfect for all.
@dew12333 I grew up back when Nintendo were on it, gave us new games, remakes were special and they actually gave a *****
My first Mario game was the OG all stars, like my first impression of Nintendo was a collection of four NES games remastered for the SNES on one cartridge
Expecting bare minimum from a company that used to make an effort isn’t entitled. Nintendo are that abusive significant other that beats you daily but sometimes gives you a chocolate bar to make you believe they care. 3D All Stars barely evening qualifies as that chocolate bar
@Northwind Xenoblade and All-stars for the Wii were also limited release, just like 3D all-stars is right now.
@LilMuku
I appreciate if that is how you think that Nintendo has changed then you would feel that way. Personally I have bought Snes mario kart on at least 4 occasions and also on the snes mini which is still in it's box, but overall it made me happier that I was able to play the game on the system that I had easily available now rather than feeling conned by Nintendo. I also hold a good collection of games which in some ways I would like to make some money on when I finally decide to sell. Again I see this limited time release game as an advantage for the future resale value.
My general opinion of Nintendo has not really changed that much either, in the past they were slow with releases and never discounted their games, a bit like now. The reward system either never existed or took a lot of games in order to get something, so only marginally better than now. They have always ripped you off for controllers and alike, so no change there. They are still trying to innovate with things like Labo and mario kart live.
As I say I am more than happy with what Nintendo do for me, but I appreciate that is my opinion and still find interest in other people's even if they are not the same as mine. I also didn't get an entitled feeling from your comment, but I do seem to in other peoples posts quite often on here.
What concerns me is what this means for the supply of those anniversary pins MyNintendo is set to give away. Stock might be so low that the whole supply is already claimed. Darn it!
I wanted the pins more than the game, and thought I'd buy the latter to get the former. Maybe I'll get lucky and my Walmart will have a copy that isn't pre-ordered. We'll see.
@Ghostchip well that is a odd thing to associate it with 😂😂😂
@JuiceMan_V lol full stock in every store. They lied about limits to increase hype. Again.
@BadWaluigi Nintendo didn't lie about anything.
It's still available until March, hence it's still limited.
I pre-ordered my copy 9/13/20 and it's still sitting in Kentucky. I actually need to call Gamestop and cancel and get my money back come to think of it. They must have forgot about me.
Well Aint that just something..
Being that this game is a limited time only, means Nintendo doesn't want any money whatsoever.
@JuiceMan_V Lmao welp it's September 2021 and they're still stacked high in Best Buy 🤣👍 LIES
