Re: Talking Point: Ring Fit Adventure Is A Thing, But Is It Your Sort Of Thing?

HexagonSun

I'm genuinely excited for this. I loved Wii Fit in its day, but this is something I can easily travel with and do almost anywhere. Videogame software fits brilliantly with exercise, when done right. I work a lot and my job is mostly sedentary, so I've been getting a lot of my daily cardio on Oculus Quest. I'll definitely be picking up Ring Fit. It looks like a fun way to keep in shape.

Re: Poll: So, Which SNES Games Have You Been Playing On Nintendo Switch?

HexagonSun

I rarely play just one game upon opening the NES/SNES apps. It's fun bouncing between such a great catalog of nostalgic games. I've mostly been playing SMW, ALttP, SM, and YI. I still hope we get regular new releases, but what we have now will keep me occupied for quite a while. I can't wait to get my hands on the official SNES controllers.

Re: Patent Filed For New Nintendo Switch VR Headset

HexagonSun

I'd love to see Nintendo go all in with VR. A headstrap, first of all, would be great. If they don't want to make the consumer invest much, 3dof can still be fun. We need a higher resolution screen with the next Switch, though.

If Nintendo wanted to go 6dof, they could release a headset with cameras for inside out tracking and infrared Joycon clips so the headset could keep their position. It would be a bit pricier, but would produce a much better result.

As much as I would love all of that, I'm not expecting it. Luckily, my Oculus Quest fills my VR desires quite nicely.

Re: Feature: 30 Weird And Wonderful Peripherals From Nintendo's History

HexagonSun

I've had so many of these. I still have an NES Max controller. They're great for certain games and they look rad.

NL shows the orange Zapper, but I had the original grey. For some reason I have four of them now. I had the Super Scope when I was a kid, but it wasn't nearly as much fun as the Zapper. I keep an NES hooked up to CRT just to play Zapper games.

I have really good memories of playing Mario Paint with the SNES mouse. I'd spend hours making rudimentary animations and playing that flyswatter game.

The GBA eReader was so stupid and cool at the same time. I thought it was really cool that an entire NES game could fit on a few cards. I loved the extra levels in Super Mario 3.

The Wavebird was, and still is a fantastic controller. While I was still tethered to my PS2, I could sit comfortably on my couch and use a Wavebird.

The 3DS Circle Pad Pro made my OG 3DS look like some Frankenstein's monster, but it was comfortable and much better than the nipple on the New 3DS

The Wii was definitely king of useless, but often fun, plastic. I had too many to count, but besides the wheel, the handgun was my favorite. It made on-rails shooters, like House of the Dead feel great.

The balance board was actually a lot of fun. My whole family got plenty of use out of it. Wii Fit will always bring fond memories.

Most recently I bought and assembled a few of the Labo kits. I was hoping Virtua Racing would have been compatible with the steering wheel and pedal. The VR kit was a lot of fun if expectations were kept in check.

There's so many more not on the list. A lot of them may seem like a waste of money, but most of these wacky accessories created fun memories. I hope Nintendo always stays playful.

Re: Nintendo Updates The Switch Online NES App To Version 4.0.0

HexagonSun

For those asking for button mapping, I think that's just Nintendo giving a little nudge to buy their classic controllers. As long as they're selling them I doubt we'll get button mapping. Bright side is they're great controllers and definitely add to the overall experience. They are a little pricey though. I love playing NES games in tabletop with the official NES controller.

Re: Talking Point: So, What's This New Nintendo Switch 'Ring' Thing All About?

HexagonSun

This definitely evokes Wii Fit, despite the emphasis on social gaming. I saw mild exercise and yoga. Wii Fit did those things too. Looks like activities that can be done alone while easily being passed to a friend without all of the calibration stuff the Wii Fit Balance Board required. This looks a lot cheaper as well. I guess only time will tell.

Re: Reminder: The Super Nintendo App Is Out Today On The Switch

HexagonSun

As much as I love the inclusion of SNES games to NSO, I feel like the legacy games should be a service unto itself. Nintendo doesn't seem to want to do much with the online part of it, so why not keep that free? I'm not much for online games, but as long as they keep offering their retro catalog, it's worth it to me. I hope we get N64 games someday.

Re: Feature: Where Does Nintendo Switch Fit In The PS5 And Xbox Project Scarlett Next-Gen War?

HexagonSun

This was the first generation I didn't buy a PlayStation as a secondary system since the N64/PS1 days. I just don't have the same amount of time that I used to for tethered console gaming.

Switch is so appealing because I can play it anywhere and still enjoy it on a TV when I have the time. I would imagine I'm not the only one who appreciates the freedom to play where and how I can.

Sony and Microsoft are playing a game of diminishing returns. How much more powerful is going to be enough? When I can't tell the difference between a video game and a live action movie? How much will that cost to develop? AAA games cost obscene amounts of money to produce. It's why most of them have DLC, season passes, or worse, loot boxes. If they don't sell millions upon millions of copies, they're considered a flop. My point is that there's going to be a time when the industry won't be able to support continuous growth of power.

Nintendo thinks laterally with it's hardware. It's a healthier business model for the long term. They do things no one else is doing. That mindset keeps them interesting. I think Nintendo will have to balance having hardware that's just powerful enough to stay relevant, while offering something the other companies can't. Switch is doing just that right now. It gives me, and many other busy people a way to play quality videogames without scheduling out time for it.

Re: Prepare To Fight Or Run When You Summon Shadow Link With The Link's Awakening amiibo

HexagonSun

I understand not wanting content locked behind a piece of plastic, but I'm happy to see that Nintendo is still supporting amiibo. I've had a lot of fun collecting them. I hope we continue to see more, but there should be a way to unlock the content in game without amiibo. Not everyone wants to collect them.

I'm surprised Nintendo never made a game centered around amiibo. It could have been FTP with the amiibo unlocking characters and and content. It would have been a FTP game I could get behind, as you actually get something of value for your money.

Re: Disgruntled Gamers Are Review-Bombing Astral Chain On Metacritic

HexagonSun

It kinda sad that people feel the need to do this. I can totally understand if a particular game is not your cup of tea. As much as I'm loving Astral Chain, I'm still trying to wrap my head around all the battle mechanics. If the game hadn't already charmed the socks off of me, I don't know if I would have the patience for it. No game is beyond criticism and I have a soft spot for a lot of so called flawed games. Some other games with universal appeal don't really do it for me. I'm not about to try and rain on everyone's parade because I don't personally like a game that other people are enjoying. We live in an age where people are afraid and angered by opinions that don't match their own. It's okay not to agree. Whether you like Astral Chain or not, it's obviously a quality piece of work and the developers deserve their accolades.

Re: Review: Pokémon Masters - One Of The Best Pokémon Mobile Games, But Still Not Quite There

HexagonSun

I just can't play mobile games anymore. If it's set around an IP I love, it just ends up cheapening my feelings for it. The core mechanics are always set around the player's addictive personality traits. I end up feeling like a rat in an experiment pushing a lever for my next dopamine hit. I see my coworkers glued to their phones playing these games. Meanwhile I have my Switch, playing full games with deep mechanics that satisfy me so much more. I don't care who throws their hat in the mobile arena. I'll stick with full games that don't try to manipulate me to continually spend more money.

Re: You Can No Longer Get 3DS And Wii U Discounts From My Nintendo In Japan

HexagonSun

@Alucard83 Totally busted, as those late-commers probably wouldn't have the points to take advantage of the discounts. I miss Club Nintendo. It actually made me spend more, as I had to get the platinum reward every year.

I feel you on the Windwaker/Twilight Princess ports. I really want those games on Switch. I would love them bundled on one cart, but I'm hardly expecting that. It makes too much sense.

Re: You Can No Longer Get 3DS And Wii U Discounts From My Nintendo In Japan

HexagonSun

Unfortunately, the discounts were usually for something I already purchased. I can't say I'm sad to see 3DS/Wii U discounts discontinued. I would love to see Switch discounts become a thing. Even with my fairly large collection of Switch games, I've passed on enough games that having discounts would push me to pick up some of the games I've missed.

Re: Poll: Vote For Your Favourite GameCube Games

HexagonSun

So many great games on the old Cube! I spent countless hours playing Super Mario Sunshine, Animal Crossing, Metroid Prime...etc.

This really makes me want GameCube games on the Switch. I have no hope for a Virtual Console, but Nintendo could surely make a great Netflix like service with just their 1st party games alone. I really hope Nintendo does something with all these classics.

Re: The Physical Version Of Spyro Reignited Trilogy On Switch Will Require A Sizable Download

HexagonSun

I don't see why anyone's surprised considering that a download was required for the other versions. That won't stop me from playing a remake of some of my favorite platformers. I played the originals mostly on PSP, so the remake will feel right at home on Switch. The first game of the trilogy was always my favorite, so I'm glad that at least that one will be on the cartridge.

Re: Soapbox: Mario Kart Tour Looks Lousy With F2P Trappings, But That’s All Right

HexagonSun

I think what makes micro transactions gross is when it's set up to release dopamine as a reward for spending money. If it does the same thing to your brain as casino gambling, it feels dishonest and unsavory. That's loot boxes in a nutshell.

Offering extra content that's not required to enjoy the base game for a flat fee is different. With rising costs of AAA game development, it makes sense that developers and publishers want to be sure that a game that cost as much as a hundred million dollars is able to turn a profit. It's not really comparable to casino style loot boxes.

I'm really not a fan of FTP mobile games. Mobile gamers tend to not want to pay for a game unless it's only a little here and there and it remains optional. Nintendo tried to release a full game that had a flat one time payment and it flopped. Mobile gamers voted with their wallets for the FTP model. There's not much Nintendo can do about it except keeping as much integrity as possible with their micro transactions. They're walking a fine line. So far they don't seem to be getting too greedy with it. Nintendo knows how valuable public perception is. I hope they keep it fair and honest for many years to come.

Re: Ni no Kuni: Wrath Of The White Witch File Size Revealed

HexagonSun

This is one I missed out on during it's original release. I really want to play it but I'm already buying so much in September that it's going to have to wait. Sometime between October and December I'll pick it up. There's just so much to enjoy on Switch. As a Nintendo gamer, I'm feeling quite spoiled.

Re: Nintendo's North American Website Now Only Advertises The 2DS Line

HexagonSun

I love my New 3DS XL. I only wish Nintendo had started out with the Super Stable 3D. The effect still manages to impress me every time I boot it up. I always supported the 3D effect, but it was way less practical before the eye tracking of the New models. By the time the New models released, the damage had been done and perception of the effect was mediocre to poor.

I predict the New models will be a highly sought after collectors item in the years to come. Not only does the 3DS have a fantastic library of games, it has the most unique feature of any handheld.

Re: Square Enix Confirms Final Fantasy VIII Remastered Will Be A Digital-Only Release

HexagonSun

As much as I would like to have FF VII-IX on a cartridge, I can't say I'm surprised. Maybe after SE finish patching all three games they could release a physical version that has all three games on a single cartridge. It would be a great way to squeeze more money out of the hardcore fans. I would gladly pay $40 to own these classics physically. Imagine a special edition for $60 that comes with a steel box, art book, etc.

Re: Video: Explore Dragon Quest XI S With The Series' Creator And Download A Demo Now

HexagonSun

Another great game I wouldn't have time to play if it wasn't on Switch. As a huge Dragon Quest fan, I'm very excited about finally getting a chance to enjoy this game.
I can't wait for the demo to finish downloading.

For those arguing against handheld play, it's not just handheld that Switch does well. It's also easy to play on more than one TV/monitor. I have two docks. One that stays home and one that travels with me. It's really nice starting a game at home, taking it with me in handheld, and easily hooking it up to another monitor. All without interrupting the game. I could never do that with a traditional home console. No matter how you like to play Switch, its versatility is only a good thing.
