Mario's 35th anniversary celebrations are well and truly underway. So far Nintendo has announced new games, merchandise, and even events and promotions for other first-party titles like Splatoon 2 and Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
If that's still not enough Mario-themed goodness for you, Japanese websites for Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels have now been launched. This lines up with the original game's Famicom release on 13th September 1985.
Both websites introduce players to each game - with details about Mario's move set, his techniques, the characters and enemies in the game, along with information about each world and item.
You can download entire PDF manuals for both games as well! This also happens to tie in with the release of the Super Mario Bros. Game & Watch, which will arrive on 13th November. Alternatively, you can play these games via the Nintendo Switch Online NES and SNES service.

- The Lost Levels - website + game manual
Will you be celebrating Super Mario's 35th anniversary with any of his classic 2D games? Let us know down in the comments.

Happy birthday mario!
I actually celebrated his birthday by playing the first world of Mario Advance 2.
This is actually really cool, Nintendo!
It was a smart move of NoA not to release the original SMB2 (Lost Levels) outside of Japan. I think that would've been a real misstep for Mario's career.
I was kind of hoping that it'd look like a very "early Internet" website lol
Still, gotta appreciate that they go the extra mile to do these kinds of things. Very niche, but entertaining.
A website and some Mario themed merchandise. Ok I bought a packet of Oreo biscuits with a picture of Mario on the wrapper. And some 2d games we have played many times in many ways.
As for the Super Mario All Stars three game pack, well, the build up to this launch is full of controversy and smells of something less than honourable.
So remind me again what we the gamers are celebrating?
Happy Birthday Mario, long live Mario!!!
Games & Watches Super Mario Bros.
Release Date: Friday, November 13, 2020
Limited production until the end of March 2021.
From the Japanese Website.....
These are so cute...it's like of they were released today! This was a completely unecessary thing to do but I love it so much!
I miss those early NES manuals with the hand draw pictures.
@zool An anniversary.
It's just like International pet your dog day.
Just a bit of fun for those interested.
What about the original Mario games like Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr., and Mario Bros? Or how about Super Mario Land 1 & 2? Those are some seriously awesome games in Mario's history and yet not one mention of them by Nintendo. It's almost like if I didn't own the roms, these games never happened 😉
Picture seems familiar....
This is why I love Nintendo. The things they do aren't always necessary, but they often put a smile on my face with unexpected little touches and surprises.
I'm way more excited for the Super Mario Bros. Game & Watch than I should be.
This is a cool website for a game I still regularly play on my Retro USB AVS. I still have my manual for Super Mario Bros. I remember staying up late Christmas night reading through it when I got my NES. I loved looking at the sprites and reading the brief description for each.
I can't wait to get my hands on the Super Mario Bros Game & Watch.
@neufel I'm interested but can't seem to find the fun. And Im not a pet your dog person so I don't get the analogy 😀
Be wary that the website will be available for a limited time (until 31/3/21) so enter now or miss the experience FOREVER!
@zool If you can't find the fun then this is not for you, but let other people have their fun please. Don't be that guy. You don't wanna be that guy.
@Yosher my comment has somehow stopped you having fun. Maybe you should not read other people's comments because not all will be cotton wool wrapped.
The article says "Mario's 35th anniversary celebrations are well and truly underway." and NL asks for comments or feedback.
I have not noticed these celebrations. They are porting some old games at high priced, which they have been doing since the Switch arrived. And a range of expensive toys for the kids. This is not celebrating its marketing.
Ok, the All Star triple Mario game is nice to have even if it's over priced for what it is. And we will see in a few day if everyone who wants to buy a physical copy gets their copy. (My usual online store was limited to 100 copies and could not supply all its pre orders). If gamers can't get a copy then they can always buy a copy from eBay at an inflated cost.
I wonder if they will be celebrating.
@zool Fans of these games will enjoy said 'marketing' as they are products they can enjoy purchasing and using. Whether you will enjoy these products is another thing but there's definitely people who will enjoy these products.
Really, if you can't understand that, then you shouldn't even be buying games in the first place because you're just giving Nintendo money. It's not celebrating, it's capitalism. Where's the fun in that?
I'll agree that some of this stuff seems overpriced though, and especially the 3D All-Stars limited supply is really dumb. But I never said it's a perfect celebration. Doesn't mean people can't still have fun with what's being offered.
Also nah your comment didn't stop me having fun. I'll still enjoy these games very much once I get them on my Switch system, just like how I'm currently enjoying other games on it and am enjoying reading up on various Mario celebrations, among other things.
@Yosher guess what? You can have fun playing video games without being sucked into buying merchandise and all the spinoff that are designed to make you poorer and Nintendo (or other companies) richer. That said its your money, you've earned it and you can spend it or waste it how you like, I guess, but this is NOT celebrating its selling.
A free (ok small) download to gamers would give us something to celebrate about.
But your enjoy your celebrations and I will enjoy the game I had to reorder, if it arrives.
I beat the first game this morning. Well, sort of...
The actual website itself uses mismatched sprite palettes (as in Luigi's skin not being the same shade of orangeish tan the mushroom platform he's standing on has) and it really hurts me on the inside
Cant read Japanese manual, but interesting to see.
I need an official walpaper with that Mario design.
Going to play some VS Super Mario Bros.
For me, this is the best way to play the original. The image is sharper, there's no screen flicker and the audio is better. Plus you get all the standard Arcade Archives gameplay options, screen filters, online rankings, High score mode and Caravan.
@zool Implying people can't enjoy getting merchandise of their favorite franchises and even do so to take part in the celebration.
If it's not for you, then that's perfectly fine. But other people have different tastes. If you can't accept that then that's a you problem.
For years now I been dying to see a game that brings a new villain to the Mario games designed after that original version of Bowser. Make him Bowsers brother, or hell, grandpa Bowser. Retcon it so all these years Bowser never been King Koopa, but Prince Koopa!
What's the password for the game manual pdf ?
@Yosher what is the celebration?
Buying merchandise and games? That is what people do all year round, buy Nintendo games and merchandise.
Where is the celebration this time?
Maybe Nintendo is celebrating because of their clever marketing plan. Most gamers who have preordered the All Star game would have bought it if it were released last year. They are not buying it because it's an anniversary.
So again what is the celebration?
@zool You... really don't get it, do you?
Sure, most people would have bought 3D All-Stars regardless of anniversary. But the fact of the matter is that it IS tied to the anniversary, as well as several other games and products, which for many fans gives it that anniversary celebration feeling.
The fact that you, specifically, do not get that anniversary celebration feeling, is entirely on you, and if you need to question where the celebration is, then clearly it is not for you, but is it really that hard to understand that what was announced in that 35th anniversary Direct does indeed allow people to take part in the celebration?
Really, I'm not telling you to take part in it or whatever. If you don't care for it, that's fine. But other people do, other people enjoy the celebration, and everyone who enjoys the celebration does so in their own way, whether it's by replaying old games in some way (breaking out old systems or buying re-releases like 3D All-Stars), or buying certain merchandise of the franchise. Everyone celebrates it their own way. And those who don't celebrate it.. well, that's totally fine too.
..or if you want a real literal answer: the celebration is the 35th anniversary of the release of Super Mario Bros. A game which has brought joy to many gamers over the years, young and old.
Whatever the case, I'm done trying to explain it to you. If you don't get it, you don't get it, and that's fine. I'll leave it for what it is and enjoy the Mario celebration my own way, buy purchasing, and enjoying, their games, and certain merchandise, both as a player, and a collector. And if you don't want it because evil Nintendo is celebrating their devious marketing scheme, more power to you. You do you, mate. You do you.
@Yosher you took it upon yourself in #20 to reply to my previous comment. 'dont be that guy' you said, as though your comment or reasoning was somehow superior to mine.
The writer of this thread said.....
"Will you be celebrating Super Mario's 35th anniversary with any of his classic 2D games? Let us know down in the comments".
That suggests answers could be yes or no, the key word being celebrating. A subjective question where there is no right or wrong answer.
So, No I won't be celebrating but you will.
You really should really have read the point of the thread before posting comments. I have posted a positive comment from my perspective, it's not a celebration it's a marketing exercise. If you see my comment as negative and posting it has spoilt your fun, you should avoid reading this stuff.
@Prizm I never played Japan's Mario 2(The Lost Levels) until a few days ago. It wasn't quite as hard as I expected it to be, though it was quite a jump in difficulty. The reverse warps were nasty though. But I agree, it was probably too hard compared to what people expected, and it looking and feeling the same wouldn't have been a good move for Nintendo and the Mario character. Still, I liked it more than I expected to.
Year of Luigi seemed like more of a celebration in good fun than this Mario 35 which feels like a brand focus event, and a "were still here" reminder.
@NEStalgia Year of Luigi was fun because it was so weird, but this is giving us a fun, silly hardware collectible and a nice looking way to play some classic 3D Mario games on the Switch and a bunch of other little things that some will appreciate, like the Super Mario Bros. All Stars. Pretty good for a 35th, I think. Not really a major anniversary, usually, is it?
They turned mushroom people into horse tails?
Mario, one of the best games (and character) ever created. Simple character with lots of hidden powers.
I would so love a Super mario Anime 😎
I’ve been playing Mario Kart on my SNES Mini. Happy days.
