Another week has flown by with strange new trademarks, Mario sneakers and a revelation of the most painfully generic vidya game title Ubisoft's marketing team could produce (and there was something else about Mario, we think?), but now it's time to take a breather and chat about our weekend gaming plans.
Members of Nintendo Life have done just that below, and we'd love for you to join in via our poll and comment sections. Enjoy!

After beginning A Short Hike last weekend, I will be continuing said Short Hike this weekend (and no doubt finishing the Hike, too). There's not much to say that hasn't been said - it's a sheer delight.
Beyond enjoying the new autumnal hue of my Animal Crossing: New Horizons island, that'll be it for my Switch gaming. I recently splurged on a retro console I've wanted for a long time now: an Atari 2600. Actually, it's a pre-2600-branded VCS, and it's older than I am. It's one of the first consoles I remember playing at my grandparents' house and I'm intrigued to see how it holds up. For the sake of convenience, I went with an immaculate A/V modded model that outputs over composite, so it'll work on my modern telly.
Yes, composite isn't exactly bleeding edge where picture quality is concerned, but it'll be quite enough for this console. Looking forward to that new hardware smell. Ooo, musty,

All this Mario-related news has got me in the mood for some of his classic video games, so this weekend I'll be returning to the original All-Stars collection on the Super Nintendo via the Switch Online SNES service. I always love when Nintendo shadow drops retro releases like that during its broadcasts.
Apart from this, I'll probably be continuing my Jump Force playthrough. It might not be the best anime fighter from Bandai Namco in recent years, but I'm determined to see it through. Maybe I'll play some Arcade Archives Super Dodge Ball while I'm at it. Happy gaming, everyone!

This weekend, I'm just playing Mario games. Anything Mario. That Direct has me so pumped up, I cannot WAIT for all of these new releases. So, to celebrate (and temporarily quench my Mario thirst... which sounds weird now that I've typed it, but I'm gonna leave it anyway), I shall be making some progress in Paper Mario: The Origami King, digging out the old Super Mario World and Super Mario All-Stars on the SNES online service, whippin' my kart in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, finishing up the Super Mario Odyssey postgame content I never got around to... and also, probably some Luigi's Mansion (that counts, right? Mario makes an appearance...). Wa-hoo!!
As always, thanks for reading! Make sure to leave a vote in the poll above and a comment below with your gaming choices over the next few days...

After almost a year of having it sitting in the backlog, I finally started Ni no Kuni last night so that’ll keep me busy for a while.
Various PC games atm
The Witcher 3.. again. 😂 The game that never ends. It'll fill the time nicely till Mario 3D All Stars arrived in a fortnight.
I'll be playing through Mario All Stars but finally got round to picking up Dragon Quest XI so I suspect that'll be taking up a lot of my time
Persona 5 Royal. Still a blast 50 hours in with no end in sight! I can see this becoming one of my all time favourites.
I’ll no doubt also be firing up Doom 64 in Switch And making my way though a few more levels. I wish they let you skip all the intro movies when the game is starting up! Great game overall though.
Just finished axiom verge. Can’t believe that game was made by one person! The glitching is such a cool technique .
Now off to Liberated which I picked up this sale. Let’s see how that one fares!
@BenAV only a year? 😏
Been in my backlog for a tad longer now. Yes, I’m a disgrace!
Please let me know what you think of it when you’re a bit in!
skyrim switch edition
The Dragonborn, on their quest to defeat Alduin the World-Eater, a dragon who is prophesied to destroy the world.
Enjoying this game so much.
Quick question: what's your pick about this game SKYRIM? I can't emphasize enough on how charming the open world atomsphere is and the music during battles against enemies, especially when battling with the dragons it's EPIC.
Picked up The Sinking City as it was so heavily discounted on the AUS shop... There’s enough I can find to like to finish it, but yeah... It’s not great. Will be breaking it up with VOEZ, Doom 64, Dead Cells and some Mario games on the online service.
I'm in the final stages of my quest to finish all the Zelda games (excluding spin offs). Finally started BotW and it's amazing. 3 divine beasts down, one to go. Done about 70 shrines now and just unlocked the last tower! So good!
Also started MGS V on PS4. It'll be my backup. I never played any MG games when they came out so again, been educating myself on the series by going back to the beginning (metal gear on max) and playing through. Great gaming history here
@quigtendo Tell me about it! I have already played through it on PS4 and loved it. Took the plunge on the switch too and before you know it, I'm on the hearts of stone expansion. It is soo good.
@Friendly Got the Switch version on launch day last September, never previously owned it on other systems. Really enjoying it so far but only about four hours in.
@Rpg-lover Well this is Skyrim. One of the most loved games of all times. This game will become timeless even in 20 years.
Animal Crossing; New Horizons
Fall Guys
Mario Party 2
Minion Masters
Bit of the last campfire can on seem to do about 30 mins before I get bored. Maybe some galaxy 2 love as well xxx
Nier automata on PS4 has sucked me in so doubt I’ll be playing my switch this weekend!
@Wholemeal_Toast I grabbed The Sinking City while it was heavily discounted in the American Switch eShop not long ago. It's not a top tier game as far as gameplay goes, but I've been enjoying the story, voice acting, and exploration. It has a Silent Hill 2 vibe to the point where I can forgive the clunky gameplay since it kind of reminds me of the clunky gameplay in old horror games.
More Bioshock 2 and Burnout, for one; likely some of both Xenoblades, SteamWorld Dig and Eternia, too. And now that the advent of 3D All-Stars has paved a more convenient road for my Mario franchise binge ahead, I might as well resume it with a proper playthrough of Super Mario World at last. The rest up to time and mood as usual.
Tony Hawks on PS4 wish it was on switch would be much more convenient for me but Activision seem to drag their feet when it comes to developing games for switch hope it does eventually get released
Animal Crossing New Horizons for more than 455 hours within 10 weeks in a row. 😀
I have obtained ALL Zodiac DIY recipes by doing Time Travel so many times on every months to find Celeste and get her DIY recipes.
Now i will get all the Zodiac fragments by Time Travel on specific date i have found for Shooting Stars or Meteor Showers.
I've now finished Bioshock and straight in to Bioshock 2. I'll probably play some Doom/ Doom 2 now the latest patch dropped.
Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and Borderlands 2, can't stress enough how well it is ported!
I've been playing a lot of Fire Emblem Echoes lately, so definitely more of that. I want to get back to Crash N. Sane Trilogy (Steam) and Banjo-Kazooie (N64) and finish those before Super Mario 3D All-Stars is out, too. And Fall Guys will get its time, too.
@Rpg-lover The big thing about Skyrim for me is that you can just set off in any direction and find your own adventure, I remember on PS3 I had side quests that were years old as I always found new things to do
AC, A Short Hike, and sometime in local multiplayer.
I'm keeping on with my run through Yoshi's Island - great game - on SNES app, and dipping into 80 Days, Tetris 99 and hopefully a bit of co-op gaming with Luigi's Mansion and Broforce..
I purchased spiritfarer last night. I’ve been playing vigor every night for the past month and decided I needed something a little less tense 😂
Gotta hurry up with Xenoblade now MARIO 3D will take over in two weeks!
Spiritfarer - Jesus this is a beautiful game! Easy 10/10. And also Nexomon: Extinction, and thanks to the recommendation of a fellow NLer - Atom RPG. Both great games. Nexo does indeed beat Pokémon in a few ways. And Atom is the Fallout game we’ve been wanting.
@dartmonkey - will there be a write-up about the Atari VCS somewhere?
I'd love to read it as it was my first console as a child, I can still remember the excitement of hiring a game for the weekend from my local toy store.
Favourites were Pitfall, Empire Strikes Back (the colour of the sky!) And the driving game - not pole position, Night Driver or something?
@BenAV great! looking forward to the moment my randomizer picks it out of my backlog!
I'm getting close.to the end of the line in Ring Fit Adventure, but don't want to end the story. So right now I'm doing all the side quests I skipped.
Also, Dead Cells, Horizon Chase Turbo, and Dragon Quest Builders 2.
Super Mario Party. It's one of the best games in the series and whilst it has fewer boards, all of the boards are really good and there are more modes than normal!
Went to buy Project Cars 3. Was told they are out of stock as they only got 2 copies. Got Paper Mario instead. Seems great so far with nice visuals but a bit simple. If anyone wants a break from gaming the new issue of Retro Gamer (211) has a massive feature on the technical aspects of the SNES. Fascinating if you like that sort of thing.
Started replaying Super Mario Galaxy 2, get me back into the groove of 3D Mario before All Stars
Original Splatoon multiplayer....
Hopefully find a few games, I mangaed to last time...
Also Wreskfest on Xbox..
This morning I've been playing Doom 2016 with my new puppy sleeping on my lap.
Tonight I'll be playing Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition. I'm on the final chapter but a bit under levelled so I probably won't finish it this weekend.
Playing Crash 1 in N Sane Trilogy, almost collected everything but not sure how far I'll go with time attack because it can get quite frustrating.
Banjo Kazooie on XBox 360, HD version has nice crisp graphics and better controls, I hope Super Mario 64 looks this good on Switch.
Also Rhythm Paradise Megamix on 3DS which is great fun in short bursts and maybe some 2D Mario in Switch online. Happy days.
More Dragon Quest XI S, it has been very useful during the Switch drought of after Paper Mario. I'm sure it'll last me at least until Sunshine releases on September 18th.
Skyrim, and trying to play some Mario Galaxy 2.
This week I will be mostly playing
Mario + Rabbids challenges
A Little Bit Of Brain Training Maths
I just picked up Sayonara Wild Hearts on sale so I'll probably be playing through that this weekend, since I hear the game is so short. I'm really looking forward to having my mind blown by the audio/visual experience. I may also play some more Adventure Pals co-op with my wife.
Luigi's Mansion and Dead Cells for me. I picked up Luigi's on sale last week. First time ever playing a Mansion game, I'm loving it so far! Way more puzzley and less platformy than I expected. Highly recommended!
Continuing my Mario marathon. I'm on The Thousand Year Door currently. It's been a long time since I've played it. So far, I'm having some difficulty getting invested in the gameplay. I usually find it easier to get invested in the Mario & Luigi games.

I'm giving Xenoblade Chronicles 2 another shot.
I was disappointed with it but I think it deserves another chance. The story and characters aren't as good as XC, but I'm getting accustomed to the combat. The Rex/Corvin combo in particular is quite fun to play around with. I may have to reconsider my opinion about this game.
Catherine and Ys VIII for me.
Both are absolutely fantastic and might end up in my top 10 favourite Switch games.
@Kalmaro When I see the abbreviation "atm" I think something very different than "at the moment". And I'm not talking about "automatic teller machine" either.
@GregamanX I also picked up Sayonara on sale. I came to it with high exceptions for visual and music--and it has not disappointed me. It is a good game.
Zelda Phantom Hourglass on my phone (I'm still amazed that that's possible) and some Paper Mario Origami King.
Animal Crossing New Horizons.
Sayonara Wild Hearts
Lonely Mountains Downhill
A Short Hike (finished last week, amazing!)
Rocket League
Quell Zen
Happy gaming everyone!
I'm continuing with ACNH. It's becoming a chore now. Most infuriatingly I've got an undesirable resident that I can't get rid of. Have reported them twice to Isabelle and like most local authorities - no progress. I've even ignored them for over 10 days? Otherwise playing Battle Supremacy - brilliant tank game. Tried WoT and got fed up with the paywall. Battle Supremacy is the same game but no pay-to-win.
I'm still trying to get a bit closer to the legendary 3 Star rating on all Mario Kart Super Circuit courses and classes on my Gameboy Micro. I'm not sure I'll ever do it - but the game keeps drawing me in!
I'm playing Super Mario World as part of my attempt to tackle my backlog. I did beat it back in the 90s, but wanted to go through again.
@Rpg-lover For me, It's one of the most engrossing games after Fallout 3 and GTA5. I love traipsing around in between missions. Night time walking through the wilds, admiring the twin moons and that choral music. I'm 380 hours in and have a nice mansion Lake View as well as Breezehome and Honeyside. I love the details, like every sentient creature has a home or resting place. Enjoy.
I’m actually playing the campfire game it’s really good just wish it played smoother. Also dead cells and halo 2 anniversary
I bought Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate a couple of weeks ago and I'm really enjoying it, I think I'm going hunting untill Super Mario 3D Allstars come out
Tony Hawk 1+2 for me. It's incredible!
I’m still picking my way through Glass Masquerade.... it’s perfect to play while watching a show ( I’ve been working through Walking Dead since I played the telltale games).
I’ll probably continue on with short little games until the Mario game comes out- I’ve never played Mario 64 or Sunshine and I’m not sure I completed Mario Galaxy so this is a good release for me.
Have a great weekend everyone!
I got a new physical copy of God Eater 3 from GameStop (shiver) 50% off, so I’ll be playing Tales of Vespiria until that comes in the mail. And I’ll probably be trying to beat Tales and hunting In GE3 until 3D All Stars comes in (which I got for ~$16 USD).
For me another indie week!
Nexomon
Spiritfarer
Party hard
Elena temple definitive edition
Lonley mountains downhill
And maybe I buy atom Rpg not sure yet.
Ohh and 1 episode of walking death season 2 haha
Happy gaming
The absolutely delightful A Short Hike, which I picked up purely on the strength of the @NintendoLife review, and DOOM 64. I had never previously played it, or any of the DOOM games, until Switch believe it or not! DOOM 64 is fantastic, possibly my favourite... it or 2016. Have a great weekend everyone.
Short Hike post-game (maybe)
Steamworld Dig 2 (gave up on Heist, it just wasn’t working for me)
Rocket League
Super Mario All-Stars
Another week has come and gone and with it being a long weekend in Canada, I'll have plenty of time to get some gaming in this weekend.
First up, I'll be looking to finish the game of Pokemon Fire Red, that I started last Sunday but I'm almost done so that shouldn't be a problem. I'm also planning on playing some Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle (I really need to finish the game). Beyond that, I also might complete the current season that I'm playing through in Rocket League.
Mostly romhacks;
Princess Pipe Panic
Kirby Gimmick!
Project M
Newer Super Mario Bros Wii
Street Fighter II Rainbow Edition
Super Mario Bros 64
Just finished Dragon Quest VIII for the first time on the 3DS, now moving on to VII.
Still playing Paper Mario on Switch, but the SNES edition of Mario Allstars has slowed me down a little. That was easily my most played SNES game as a teenager. I play through the NES versions regularly, but I'm still really enjoying having Allstars on the Switch. I'm playing a little Odyssey too, as I'm itching for the release of 3D Allstars.
On 3DS I'm playing Samus Returns. It's such a great game. I'm also playing Starfox 64 3D.
At home I'm playing MGS: Twin Snakes on my GameCube with a little Super Monkey Ball. On my Wii U I'm playing Super Mario Galaxy 2 in anticipation of 3D Allstars. I'm also waiting for my Eon N64 HDMI converter and I'll start playing through Banjo Kazooie and Perfect Dark again.
Have a great weekend everyone!
More Shin Megami Tensei IV Apocalypse on 3DS for me, plus maybe some Crusader Kings III on PC if I can clear a 15-hour window.
However, I’m quite tempted to hit Switch online and play some SMB or Super Mario World. I’ve never actually beaten any of them. How long can it take, really?
Fire Emblem Three Houses, I finally bought it and i like it! And some Mario games...
on ps4 marvels avengers
1. Captain Tsubasa (Switch)
2. CONTROL: AWE
3. WastLand 3
4. F12020 (F1 Italy Race weekend 🏁🏎)
@Steelhead Puppies during the pandemic are the real doom slayer.
Just finished Doom 2016 last night. so good. It is definitely a game worth going back to in the future.
Starting Bioshock Infinite this weekend.
I’ll finish Link’s Awakening this weekend - great fun.
I’m also having a blast with Golf Story. Picked it up on sale last wee and it’s terrific!
I'm coming into the home stretch with Final Fantasy VII. Life has been all in my way, but I'm almost done. So much backlog...
@HazezonTamar it is a great game. Played it on PS4 and now I'm loving it even more in handheld. Needed the Hori Split Pad to stop my hands cramping up though.
I've been holding out for Doom Eternal on Switch, fighting the temptation to buy it on PS4.
PS4- Dragon Crown Pro, Street Fighter V
Switch- Animal Crossing New Horizon
Xbox One- Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1&2
Sega Genesis Mini- Vectorman
A ton of mario + rabbids, a ton of Alttp, and a little of super mario all stars
More Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective on my 3DS this weekend; I'm about to finish chapter 9. It's been a fun ride so far; the characters, scenarios, and puzzles are certainly memorable! I can't wait to piece more of Sissel's mystery together.
For text breaks, I've dusted off my Wii U and have been playing through Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest. While I played the original DKC to death back in the day, I have never played the other two games in the Rare trilogy. Figured it was time to fix that. XD
Have a wonderful weekend! Happy gaming!
Probably World of Tanks Blitz even though it breaks my "don't play a Wargaming game on the weekend for the sake of your sanity" rule.
Maybe also some Psyvariar Delta which I just picked up physically yesterday from NintendoNY.
Game & Watch Gallery 2 (GBC) - I've been trying for high scores in Donkey Kong again.
Fallout 3 (Games For Windows) - Wrapping up the last of the collectibles I needed.
Secrets and Treasure: The Lost Cities (Windows Phone) - Very meh so far...
Just finished Persona Q2: New Cinema Labyrinth, only took 70 hours!
I’m now focusing my attention on a completely different game... Deadly Premotion 2. Just started Act 3
Yoshi’s Crafted Word
Rocket League
New Super Lucky's Tale (stuck at the Hauntingham boss.)
Ps4
Knack 2,
Tokyo Xanadu Ex.
Switch
Urban Flow,
Animal Crossing.
I had a go on A Short Hike too,a great little indie game but the high score from NintendoLife is way over the top.I'd give it a 7..or maybe a 7+.
Nexomon Extinction Switch versión.
Another weekend revisiting the Wii U and giving the Switch a break. Playing Pikmin 3 and Wonderful 101.
Tony Hawk 1+2
NBA2K21 on Switch
Bought A Short Hike, it's living up to the hype.
Playing ACNH, cataloging like a madman. Got some good FE:3H time in. After beating the Black Eagles playthrough, I figured I wouldn't care about the other houses. Happy to report that Blue Lions are very interesting. It's really a great game.
Also, finally started playing Halo 2 on MCC. Having never played the campaign, gotta say it's pretty good.
Happy gaming, everyone.
I'm close enough to finishing everything in A Short Hike that there's not much left to do, but I did enjoy it. I played some Animal Crossing and Mario Maker yesterday. I'll probably play Animal Crossing this weekend and maybe a bit of Civilization VI, but honestly this weekend I want to read and clean and get outside.
Animal Crossing. I'm trying to breed purple pansys and it's...not going that well.
Continuing with my journey through the Dragon Quest games I started last week. I finished Dragon Quest I so I'm onto Dragon Quest II. I think I'll just finish II and III and take a break. I'll get to XI eventually. lol
Other than that...I might play some more Cattails. I recently noticed it had an update (I don't know how old that was or what it changed) and played it for a bit. I finished Brave Dungeon on Lunatic mode, but I still might play more of it. There are still achievements to get. I might play more Arcade Spirits and Cinders. Both are very good visual novels.
I have been on a big Metroidvania kick recently so booted up 3000th Duel from my backlog earlier this week. I am at the very end tower I think (about 15 hours in) and I cannot get over how much I have enjoyed this game. I think I picked it up for like $8 earlier this year and it is so worth the price. Hoping to complete it today or tomorrow and then will focus on Tony Hawk 1+2 on PS4
Happy gaming all!
51 Clubhouse Games!
I’m on break from Nintendo this weekend with Tony Hawk. Shame it’s not on the switch !! 😭
@spirit_flame wow! you sure do have alot of insight on this gem. Without a doubt this game is breathtaking. The story is engaging, also i am 150hrs in.
Animal Crossing, Slay the Spire.
Now that work has started back up Divinity has taken a backseat unfortunately
Finishing Bioshock and straight into Bioshock 2. What a marvellous game. I can't believe that I skipped this game before!
I slept on hollow knight and am now super into it. Have blasphemous on my backlog too if I want to go all out on rougelikes. Lego DC super villains from the last sale is still going strong, so easy yet so satisfying.
On Switch, I finally got Astral Chain about a month ago and after it made a mediocre first impression, I'm now really getting into it. My Wii U is also getting some love as I just recently picked up Pacman and the Ghostly Adventures and Call of Duty Ghosts.
I've still got species of fish to catch in A Short Hike. I love the fishing mechanic in that game! Also Rocket League, Animal Crossing (haven't seen the fall colors yet), Halcyon 6, Mario Maker 2, Final Fantasy X, and shmup collection came in the mail finally so I'll be playing Satazius et all.
@Rpg-lover It's got layers of details that take a few play through's to get at. In my opinion the other games that are similar is Baldurs Gate and Zelda Breath of the Wild - Zelda only matches in world environment. Enjoy!
While my Switch will be played, let's be honest. I will be mostly dividing my time between THPS1&2 and AVENGERS on my PS4.
My son has decided to start zelda botw again so i doubt I'll get much time on the switch over the next few weeks. With that in mind I bought Darkest Dungeon for my ipad which I've only spent about half an hour with so far.
If I get chance I may play a bit of snes on the switch online service, or maybe start Transistor from my backlog
Spiritfarer! Everybody needs to play this game, it's a gem.
Project Warlock twice and Rigid Force Redux now for the 13th time. Both are absolute great games and perfect for a weekend alone. I had this hole weekend just for me and enjoyed every minute of it. Tomorrow my girls come back from their short vacation and I have to show them the upcoming Mario Kart Live.
Finished Super Mario Bros in Super Mario All Stars and Silent Hill 2 on PS2 so far.
22 years later I finally beat Final Fantasy Tactics last night, moving on to Breath of Fire 4 later. Played A Short Hike in between, fun little game.
I started playing and am enjoying Spellbreak quite a bit!
I hope to finish Child of Light.
No switch this weekend just mhw on x box one icebourne expansion waiting on a good 3rd party switch game to play
Switch- Super Mario All-Stars
Xbox One- Tony Hawk 1+2
I’ve been exposed to good old covid19 and have what I thought was a cold, so I’m currently playing a game called “find a testing facility in the US that isn't closed until Tuesday”.
Congress is playing a game called “GOP and DNC bi-partisan virtue signaling” so since I’m working as much as they are I’ll be playing game called “find a roof over my head” by next week. 😂
That said, probably Tony Hawk as a self reward after I clean up my house.
I did randomly decide to play through all of the NES/SNES Castlevania games this week. I must say, I’ve been wrong all of these years. Simon’s Quest isn’t as bad as I had remembered. Castlevania III is boring and overrated and Castlevania IV is boring and overrated.
I also randomly beat Mario and Mario 3 whatever day All-Stars dropped. I’m not into Mario games (did play the first one a million times back when), but I have to say, SMB 3 is damn impressive.
Ghost of Tsushima on PS4pro, and a bit of Black Flag while my wife plays...Ghost of Tsushima 😅
In addition to more AC, I had a blast on Mario kart and All-Stars. The main game I played this weekend was called ‘celebrating my birthday’ - I levelled up on Saturday, and now at the quite frankly unbelievable age of 46 ... where did all the time go ...?
@Mii_duck Potentially, although it might be a while. Watch this space
120-something hours in, and I've finally watched the credits roll on Dragon Quest XI — some VERY interesting and clever post-game content which I won't spoil for anyone, but it's really compelling me to keep playing...
Oh and I picked up PGA 2K21 — first decent PGA game I've played since Tiger Woods 2006 - very chill and moreish!
Completing Windbound
after 3 days and 232 Fish Bait i managed to finaly catch and donate to my Museum a Golden Trout, i already got and donated all the Fish, Bugs and Sea Creatures of septembre, anxioly waiting for the upcoming Fall update for the game and the return of Nintendo themed Furniture and itens the the Mario set.
i bought and am playing connection haunted, it is a bit scary, the camera starts pulling you towads a ghost of some sort, works very well with the joycon controller.
