Super Mario 3D All-Stars comes out next week, and in the lead-up to the release of this big 35th-anniversary collection, Nintendo Minute's Kit and Krysta have been showing off the game in their weekly videos.
Last weekend, we got a look at the box art and game card, and in the latest video, they've given us an incredibly brief look at the game's main menu - where you can choose the title you want to play or the soundtrack you want to listen to.
Super Mario 64 (1996)
Super Mario Sunshine (2002)
Super Mario Galaxy (2007)
Super Mario 3D All-Stars - Title Screen

This is pretty nice looking. I do wish they would've included a gallery mode with concept art. Mario concept art is some of the most intriguing in the industry when we actually get a peek.
Might as well get used to the menu. Nintendo developed games menus are getting simpler and simpler anyway.
Super Mario Wii?? Please, just hire me as your editor.
very stylish, I like it. Can't wait till friday
Looks inoffensive to me 🤷♂️
I actually understand why 64 didn't get a remake like some of these people wanted as the collection is basically a history lesson of sorts and thus would be inauthentic to what is being conveyed.
What’s with the font for the year of release. Not a fan. Not as convincing for a Galaxy 2 option in game looking at that menu design
These collections are essentially museums for video games and that's what this looks like.
@JuiceMan_V i wouldnt go so far as to call it a history lesson. A lot of compilations have the same presentation. The Konami compilations are an example. Kinda just seems like the standard these days. If the original Allstars were released today im sure they would have provided more than just the box art and release dates.
Cant help but feel that people would be more okay with M64 if Nintendo hadnt released the DS remake or released it multiple times on VC. Between that and it standing out the most of the 3 (whereas the original Allstars updated all games), itll always be a contentious point as to some people its a perfect classic in what it was, where others want to see what could be.
Looks like a PowerPoint presentation lmao
Looks like a back of a pamphlet
Can’t wait for Midnight, Thurs. night!
Has it been confirmed yet that the camera can be inverted in Sunshine?
@DM666 I am also waiting for news on this. I played my GameCube version a few weeks ago and this was a big issue of me
Ooh what languages will be available? This really interests me. Wonder if it's only European languages or if we might get Japanese.
For Sunshine they have just the box art, but for Galaxy it's the whole box, the plastic case with the box art, as you can see the white rim.
@Gerald yeah same, virtually unplayable!
Oeh, that’s not very pretty
@Octane It really IS bothering you, isn't it? Hahaha
It looks very eShop-y. You know, if eShop allowed you to buy N64/GC etc games.
@timp29 Looks like Art Deco is back in style. First those old school "Edison Light bulbs" turn up everywhere and now this font. I think they used it in Mario Odyssey as well, at least in the New Donk City level.
Friday at 2 pm. Mario 64 first , I can’t wait to see how the camera controls then will get 10 stars and see how the flying is. Then galaxy to see how it works on switch lite. Then sunshine for a bit. Then back to Mario 64 to get to end credits then galaxy end credits, then sunshine end credits . Then back to 64 to get all stars, then galaxy all stars, then sunshine all stars.. . . . That’s my plan anyway x x x x
This menu is clearly rushed, awfully so, but I don't care so much as long as the ports play flawlessly. Super Mario All-Stars had a pretty mediocre menu too if you think about it, apart from the gorgeous "splash screen".
They've gone for a sort of similar look to the inside of a game manual maybe?
You can tell they're selling this for a limited time, the cover and menus are disappointing. Definitely looks really sterile and low effort to me.
At least the games are great, can't complain about those
Now we must wait 6 days
Wait
Can you listen to the music of mario galaxy while your playing Mario 64.
Just watch to the right corner above
Sorry
In the menu
@Spanjard YEAH IT IS. Absolute madness.
@RazumikhinPG @Northwind
By the eShop:
"Super Mario 64 in-game text can be set to Japanese, English, French or German.
Super Mario Sunshine in-game text can be set to Japanese, English, French, German, Italian or Spanish.
Super Mario Galaxy in-game text can be set to Japanese, English, French, German, Italian, Spanish or Korean."
The menus have higher counts than the eShop suggests, but might be counting both US and EU versions.
@JuiceMan_V Let's at least hope they've improved the controls and the camera to make it more accesible to the current standards. Playing Mario 64 today is a bit of a pain in the ass XD, unless you played it back at the time, and you know what you'll find.
The 1920s gatsby font is bloody awful, how is that relevant here?
Anyone else looking at that first image and thinking SMG2 will slot in nicely on the right?! They even left the space for it! I so hope it’s an end of game bonus.
I totally get why they didn't include the DS port.
If they're celebrating the 35th anniversary (which they are) you'll specifically highlight the games that were milestones in the 3D era of Mario games, which the DS version of 64 is not.
The the next argument is; "well the original All-Stars updated the graphics" sure, but we're talking 2D vs 3D here along with time and money to redo every single asset of a far more complex game.
In the Mario 64 description it says
“The introduction of the analogue control stick set the new standard for later games in the series”.
Slight downplay there. Surely it should read something like “set the new industry standard for pretty much every 3D game since”.
@the_beaver the most annoying part is the camera moving while jumping particularly long jumping but if you practice you’ll get good at it. Something that you could argue today’s kids aren’t that used to in games.
@bluesun that's awesome! It's great to be able to play the Japanese versions without having to buy the Japanese copy (and not receive Gold Points on my EU eShop account). Thank you for the info.
Not a fan of the selection screen, should've gone with something that feels Mario, this looks a bit generic but it's the tiny box art that really annoys me.
Look at the Kirby Dream Collection menu, it's filled with cute stars and the focus is the box art.
Instead of gameplay videos they should've done dynamic backgrounds based on environments of the game selected!
Looks great to me. I just hope it's easy to exit to the main menu from each game and quickly select another. I want to be able to play a level or two, exit and play another game quickly and easily. That's what I loved about the original Allstars.
I honestly dont get the hype for this? Can someone explain it to me? I had a small hope that Nintendo would remaster Super Mario 64 in glorious HD and make the other 3D games in HD. But, this collection is just ports and they charge what? 50 dollars for this? I can play these games for free on my computer..
There is absolutely no value to this, other than that you can play it in handheld mode. Of course, Nintendo fanboys will buy it regardless..
@JuiceMan_V
Stop defending Nintendo. They took the easy way out. They could absolutely do an effort and make SMG 64 in HD and have even more people buy this collection, other than just Nintendo fanboys.
Its just a lazy cash grab port and nothing else sadly..
Roll on Friday:)
@beazlen1 I'm 32, reaaaally far from being a kid. But I didn't have Nintendo consoles until the GC, so when I tried to play this game, it was too late.
Anyway, let's hope Nintendo AT LEAST improved that (seeing they have barely touched the visuals).
@Norwegianguy
You can feel how you feel, but more than just "Nintendo fanboys" are buying this game lol!
You're angry, but you don't have to make stuff up 😂
@the_beaver it’s never too late to play the original SM64!! The camera is a bit fiddly at times but the game still holds up very well. Recently I’ve been replaying a lot of my N64 library hooked up with my Super64 and mClassic and most hold up surprisingly well. Yes frame rates can be low at times and some have fiddly cameras (DK64 esp.) but they are still very enjoyable. Of course NES SNES and N64 was my childhood so I’m bias. However my kids have gotten into a few classics just like I did which shows to me they are still very playable, importantly a lot of fun and we weren’t all mad back then.
@beazlen1 are you using the pal super 64. How is it. I’m looking for reviews everywhere.
@Doofenshmirtz PowerPoint presentations can be nice.
I'm not sure I really like the design of the title screen and menu. Thankfully it's the games that count and those are still each out of this world.
@Northwind The font is art-deco. Grim Fandango and Bioshock yes. Mario no.
Does Mario 64 really have the border above and below the screen as well?? That's really annoying.
Looks like a custom Launchbox theme.
@Norwegianguy the official nintendo web site says all the Mario games on this collection including Mario 64 have been upgraded to HD.
@1UP_MARIO no, I’m using an NTSC Super64 which is pretty awesome. The slick mode works wonders. Hopefully the Pal Super64 is as good. I can’t see why it wouldn’t.
@Norwegianguy
Or maybe that just isn't what this collection is meant to be. Changing too much wouldn't match with the way they are advertising this game and would go against the theme of celebrating milestones. They are meant to be very similar to how they were originally released.
Slowly and slowly the comments here are turning more toxic. Nintendo could give us everything we could ever want and people would still manage to find a way to complain.
The games are also all HD by the way - "Mario’s movements are as smooth as ever with HD resolution for each game" https://www.nintendo.com/games/detail/super-mario-3d-all-stars-switch/
@Norwegianguy
I only played some of Super Mario 64 DS. I never finished it so this would be a good chance to complete the game.
I have never played Super Mario Sunshine and I am looking forward to it. It looks like a really good game.
I absolutely loved Super Mario Galaxy and am really happy I can get a chance to play it again. It is one of my favourite games ever!
Playing for free online would be illegal and I'd rather support the industry than complain that they want to make some money.
I really don't care if games are HD or not (which these are - "Mario’s movements are as smooth as ever with HD resolution for each game") . I've played a lot of games before in the past that weren't HD and I loved them.
I wish that they had made Super Mario Sunshine 60 FPS for this collection. That's my main complaint.
I really think they could have done a LOT more with the presentation and menu design.
Look at Rare Replay for a great example of what I'm talking about:
It also supports 4K now and makes all those old games look quite amazing, particularly the N64 ones:
And even the original Super Mario All-Stars did a bit more with the presentation and menu design than we have now:
But I guess it does the [bare minimum] job.
The bare minimum effort I've come to expect from Switch era Nintendo. I'll stick to the superior Dolphin versions, at least I can play Galaxy 2 on there tee hee hee
I guess this is the closest I'm ever going to see of this game as I will never be able to purchase it due to how limited it is.
@huyi it's going to be available digitally from day one
@doctorhino
Not everybody is loaded with money...it is possible some people may not be able to purchase 3D All*Stars between launch and de-listing dates due to other priorities.
@Norwegianguy oh well you're in luck, they are all in HD, but if you can play them for free there's no way to compete with that. I don't think this collection is for pirates, more for the average consumer.
@MortalKombat2007 ok... simply informing that it is possible to get it even if you didn't get a pre-order in. But yeah I'm Scrooge McDuck over here.
Personally I am not buying the game because I only really want to play galaxy and am going to wait to see if they will let me buy it standalone. So not dropping 60 day one either.
@MortalKombat2007 excatly 👍👍
I'm curious if there is default menu music or if it's "Nintendo Switch silent" unless you select a music track.
@Taikuaile
Okay, but why not fully remaster it? This collection and that warriors Zelda game is what we get for the rest of the year. Why not make the Mario collection more than just ports? Even the menu screen looks rushed.. cmon, I can't be the only one seeing this as a lazy attempt.
@impurekind exactly, but this low effort thing will sell a lot and will get high reviews as Rare replay got a lot of flack about graphics etc. and got lower scores for missing one game... It even sold for a lower price, but alas.
It’s insane how easy Nintendo is getting thumbs up...
Review: “In the end these are 3 of the best Mariogames - 9”
@koekiemonster I hear you on that one.
Back in the days of Super Mario All-Star it was clear Nintendo was going above and beyond with that compilation. With this compilation it's clear to me that it's happy to just do barely enough, because, imo, it's knows fine well Nintendo gamer standards have dropped across the board.
Super Mario 3D All-Stars should have included, imo, Super Mario 64 (and possibly a version of the DS update too), Super Mario Sunshine, Super Mario Galaxy, Super Mario Galaxy 2, Super Mario 3D Land and Super Mario 3D World. Basically all the 3D Mario platform games up to this point that were released prior to the Switch, just like Super Mario All-Stars included all the 2D Mario platform games released prior to SNES (and there was eventually even a version that included Super Mario World too). And it should have had a lot more love and attention put into the presentation and menus and the like as well.
Now THAT would have been one stunning Super Mario 3D All-Stars compilation.
What we're getting is still perfectly fine for what it is, but I remember a time when Nintendo was at the top with stuff like this and everyone was struggling to even reach the same level. Now Rare (admittedly a great developer when it's at the top of its game) can put out a compilation together for Microsoft and totally blow Nintendo's first party team out of the water by comparison.
It's different times.
Seems pretty low effort. But I’m not here for the UI, I’m here for Sunshine!
@impurekind they didn’t even changed the button prompts iin this Romdump collection
Something they did with the free Zelda collection on Nintendo GameCube.
This is some of the lowest effort a developer has ever done. Guess what? It will sell millions....
@koekiemonster They've done some things - I'm still very confused by how the X button wasn't changed in Sunshine, but Sunshine's title screen was redone quite a bit (Press A instead of Press Start, moved below the logo), 64 has "Press +" on its title screen, and Galaxy changed the B button to be circular instead of rectangular. And that's just of what they've shown us.
@countzero lol yeah about Art Deco. I was thinking Gatsby when I saw it
I actually like this.
Pneuma approved!
@doctorhino
I wouldn't wait too long if you can buy it,. I am not holding out for Nintendo to release a stand alone version of each game cause they may not As we all know, Nintendo makes really weird business decisions. Also, physical copies may not be easy to come by this holiday season, though there is a the digital version until March.
@impurekind
Eh...such a collection would raise the price substantially. Nintendo would have to remake Super Mario 64 DS and Super Mario 3D Land from the ground since those games were not developed for higher resolutions in mind. Such a collection makes no business sense as only rich hardcore players would buy it. I will admit the presentation of the compilation is kind of crap though
@MortalKombat2007 I will be blown away if they take the digital copy off the store. I'm guessing limited is only on physical, it would be like throwing away money to not sell a finished game over download.
I have a good version of galaxy and galaxy 2 for Wii u still.
I can also see this being a hype thing and setting themselves up to be the hero when they make more of them "by popular demand". In the end this could be to create a really good first push of the game to boost cash on hand.
@Doofenshmirtz moans about game menus!
@doctorhino It's rumored that they will sell the games individually on the eShop after March 31st. I think that's pretty likely.
If Galaxy 2 was in the collection, the complainers would have found something else to complain about.
@SpiderSquid Otherwise phone idiots would lash back. Best please them. You should see how Windows 10 keeps making fonts smaller and smaller after each major update.
Looks like a very basic emulator frontend theme. Disappointing.
They're great games obviously but this whole collection thing seems so poorly put together.
I was playing Super Mario Allstars on SNES online last night and noticed that the "Select Game" font was the same one they used for the Year of Release in this new collection. That might be where it came from and why they used it again.
Edit: Checked again, and its not the same font exactly, but its a similar style
It's all nice. But I was hoping for a 3D version of the title screen of the original Super Mario All-Stars.
And no Galaxy 2...
@Krockman Sadly.
@noswitchbutidc yeah and?
This looks very lazy
@Averagewriter what game is missing from the title screen?
Still smdh about the omission of galaxy 2
@MortalKombat2007 Both those games use polygons, which scale up mathematically into whatever resolution (the edges of said polygons becoming ever smoother and sharper as the resolution increases), so half the job would literally be done simply by putting the games in HD. Just like this:
And you'll notice many DS/3DS games also use very clean pixel art for the HUD and menus and stuff too, which also scales exceptionally well.
There is no doubt in my mind those two 3D Mario platformers could have been output in HD and looked great with it.
