Earlier this week, Nintendo celebrated Mario's 35th anniversary by announcing a handful of appropriately themed Nintendo Switch games. The highlight of the lot was arguably the reveal of Super Mario 3D All-Stars at the very end of the presentation.
Unfortunately, the catch (because there's always one) is that it'll be a "limited release" and will only be available until the end of March 2021. This even includes the digital version of the game. The second everyone found out, there was of course concerns about scalpers hoarding copies of the game and then reselling them at premium prices. The RRP for reference is £49.99 / USD $59.99 / CAD $79.99.
Well, as expected - it's already happening and the game isn't even out until 18th September. Many retailers in the North American region, in particular, have reportedly sold many of their pre-orders, and now opportunists are inundating websites like eBay with their own future copies of the game at much higher prices.
Some of these overpriced listings appear to have already had offers and even been sold. Again, the game will be around until March next year, so there should still be plenty of time to secure your own copy (physically) if you want to relive these three 3D Mario adventures in one package.
Have you managed to reserve your own copy of Super Mario 3D All-Stars yet? Tell us down below.

Well this was expected. Nintendo surely knew that this was going to happen. Quite cheeky of them.
Not surprised in the slightest.
But seriously do people not have better ways to do with earn money
This was always going to happen with a limited run game.
It would be great if Nintendo could give more clarity on what they are going to do after the limited time.
Why would anyone buy from ebay when they are available for like 6 months!? Crazyness.
Nintendo
for the scalpers.
The game is LIMITED TIME not limited print run, stop confusing your readers for clicks. Then again your "source" is a clickbait youtuber.
Absolute *****. How do these people sleep at night? I tried this once but I felt bad asking for even a cent more. So instead I just sold it for what I bought it for.
I say someone needs to Robin Hood these fools.
@liljmoore Well, it's easy money.
Not that I would do something like that because it's really uncool towards others.
It's how Nintendo creates an illusion of a premium product without having to use modern specs or newer technology.
We have 6 months to get the game. Why bother with ebay before that?
Are the scalpers going to buy ALL copies before that?
All physical games are limited run. It’s just usually we don’t know the end date, and it’s unusual for a potentially big game like this to have such a short run.
Digital is odd.
People who are paying $100 for a game that will be in plenty supply are crazy fish. It’s not going anywhere.
@Zuljaras They can't buy all the digital copies, I can tell ya that much. I easily placed a pre-order at Best Buy and Gamestop (cancelled BB's) for it, so, I don't know what mushrooms these scalpers are eating, but they certainly aren't Super.
Amateurs. Wait 20 years, sell for 5000 eur. Profit.
They are a strange breed of peoples.
Nintendo is just encouraging these scalpers. And thinking that they would know by now that such people and practices exist, it is particularly sinister and anti-consumer by Nintendo.
Secured my physical copy. If I were to go digital with this and something happened to the Switch, I couldn't reclaim it. At least with physical I'd have a better chance of keeping hold of it.
The game is still on Amazon, so get it while you can.
Or just digitally download it.
Its not even sold out anywhere and I doubt it will be for some time. Don't get me wrong I hate scalpers but you've got to be a special breed of stupid to be paying double the retail value for a game that is easy to preorder everywhere, or you can simply download anyway
It's still easy to find at retail so if anyone's stupid enough to buy from a scalper instead then that's on them I guess.
The scalpers will get bitten by their karma.
No surprise here.
The game was defined as 'Limited' by Nintendo and it was so sudden many retailers weren't ready to list it, causing confusion over where and how preorder it.
Aside how weird the limited decision is, I'm really surprised Nintendo didn't plan it all out a little better to avoid give scalpers a lot of easy prays.
As Byleth would say:
"As expected."
Ah, ***** off! Not this again!
Yup and the cheeky ****** *******'s are listing the new SMB Game and Watch for £99! - more than twice the price on Nintendo.co.uk.
I say don’t fall for it at all. Between now and March I predict that anyone who wants a copy at rrp will get It. 7 months is a long time. Anyway I’m downloading day one. Limited is just a sales urgency technique xx
The whole setup is wrong, everyone let's you preorder without paying a penny and then just list it on ebay and potentially double your money before you've even spent any. No risk and high reward, just make people pay upfront for preorders or better yet ebay should ban the sale of them
I intend to grab at least two, but likely three copies, and I almost never do that.
What a wonderful *** year this is.
Nintendo should be ashamed! Artificially limiting a game during a pandemic. It's so gross!
This is nothing new. Scalpers are not some new breed. They do it with everything and are everywhere at all times. eBay is always full of scalpers and most of the time they don't sell anything anyway, since you can just buy the product elsewhere in the store for normal prices.
Most often (what people are not realizing), they just target consumers in countries, where there are no retail stores selling these games. They are not targeting you or me with plenty retail options all around us to buy the game for normal price coming 6+ months.
I mean- at LEAST wait until the preorders are sold out. You can still order it at retail from every major seller.
The way I see it is anyone will be able to get it, just as a normal game, until March when Nintendo stop selling them.
I remember thinking Pokemon steel books would add resell value...
Thanks Nintendo for making this possible! You’re too good for us.
Thanks Captain Obvious.
We knew this would happen and like clockwork it is.
@Yosher You are absolutely right, friend
PS: where is your avatar from? it's rad!
Nothing wrong w/a seller trying to make money. The market dictates value. Supply, demand. What's wrong with this practice?
Well I already have my pre-orders in. So, I'm good.
This one will be a digital download for me. I'm not playing to the scalpers tune.
@avictorao It's from an art piece I commissioned once.
Surely they will make plenty until at least Christmas as it isn't a limited and they wouldn't want to limit their income on this game until then. The outcry if you couldn't buy this game in October after saying it would be available until March would be even worse publicity than the limited nature that everyone is already moaning about.
People buying it on eBay at these prices clearly have more money than sense.
@LavaTwilight you absolutely can reclaim digital purchases on new switches. I’ve done it twice already.
As expected and nothing new.
Don’t blame the seller, blame the buyer
This is insane. It will be broadly available, it's just there won't be any more copies after March.
Are people that stupid when you can preorder the game yourself lol
@Rika_Yoshitake If you're referring to SpawnWave how exactly are they 'clickbait'? I've been subbed to them for a long, long time now and they've not once used clickbait.
@AgentGuapo True, but can you reclaim them of they are no longer available from the Switch eshop?
Not really surprised, but I don’t hate the scalpers. I blame the people who are buying them, you can get this from loads of online places for normal price. They are the idiots and obviously have no clue, just see "ULTRA RARE" and think that they must buy it. Stupid people
I got it preloaded from the eshop.and I preordered ordered a copy from Amazon which people can still preorder lol
...or touts as we in the UK say, mostly know for buying and reselling tickets, which is illegal, is not quite the same as someone buying two games and ebaying one to make a small profit, after all that how business works.
Also I have not read that the physical copy will be available until next March regardless. My understanding is availability is while stocks last. That then begs the question, will Nintendo stop selling any remaining copies it has in stock at the March deadline.
Nintendo is either very astute or in trouble. Let's assume 'astute', so it knows exactly what it's doing and why. It has created a reason for anyone wanting this game to get it sooner than later and it has created this situation. A situation that I can easily afford to buy 20 plus copies now and make a nice profit next year.
Either Nintendo has more to announce, like a new console, and the All Stars will reappear in 4k next year or simply to take in as much profit as it can in the shortest time.
So don't blame the entrepreneur who is buying up the copies, if there is blame aim is at Nintendo.
Or avoid buying the game as a protest. Me I've ordered a copy and when I finished it I'll resell it for what I can. But not to make a profit.
@Jeronan I've looked and can't get it (yet) anywhere in Ireland. But I can still get it sent to a UK address to then forward it here so I still don't have to pay Scalper-Fees.
It's almost as if manufactured scarcity is just a perfect tactic for abuse and artificially increasing value of a product.
These scalers are just disgusting. Also the people buying out a product to sell on at above the original sale price aren't saints either.
@Rika_Yoshitake Nowhere in the article is the game referred to as a “limited print run.” They simply call it “limited” or “limited release,” both of which are accurate. You might want to read the entire article first before lobbing criticisms.
I don't like this practice, but people buying from them are the actual issue here. That's what keeps this scalping alive.
It is starting to become some kind of vicious circle as well: maybe these scalpers want e.g. an Analogue Mini NT, means they need to put 1300 on the table. How to cover for that? Selling other limited items at a profit to make up for it.
Banks don't give you any interest anymore, so what is the alternative? LEGO, (Retro) Video Games, Figurines, etc.
Why aren't stock brokers called scalpers?
@Zimon lol it's not artificially limiting if it is actually limited.
Also, you can still preorder this right now. It's not going to be in short supply. If it's also available digitally, why is that even a concern? Weird that its limited, but are you really actually gonna wait that long to get this if you are into it?
What's funny is how stupid people are.sure I'll pay 100 for a game all because I'm to lazy to preorder it myself lol.you can preorder it anywhere and go to any store to buy it when it comes out.up until march 31st.
Why bother when you can still easily pre order your own copy pretty much anywhere
I hope it's turns out to be limited in printing time only and they actually make 30 million copies in that time and these scalper pricks get screwed over. Unfortunately I don't think that will be the case.
@Crockin You can imagine a situation Where someone buys the switch as their first Nintendo console a year from now. Plays Super Mario Odyssey and wants to download more 3-D Mario games. At that point they will only be available secondhand.
It’s artificially limited because they are delisting it from the store when they would perfectly well be able to leave it up.
Thankfully a digital version is always an option. Although I'll try and find a physical version on retail anyway.
@Ryall but they are limiting it. Its limited. I agree it's dumb, but it's not artificially limited if those parameters are set.
Nintendo isn't artificially making anything scarce. They said the window you can order a copy. If someone doesn't buy it during that window, it's their own fault. That's like saying apple trees make apples artificially scarce because they only naturally produce in a certain season. I know it's easier to repeat a one liner than think of something unique, but c'mon people. If you want the game, just buy it. If people want to sell it for higher to make an extra buck, good luck to them. It's the same as someone reselling a rare game. Quit being an ostrich, and go play a video get. You'll feel less miserable, I'm sure.
@Rika_Yoshitake actually it’s both. The physical is a limited run and the digital is on the eShop for a limited time. That’s how it’s worded on the Mario Direct.
Pre-ordered this morning for Galaxy alone 😊
You can just pre-order a copy for cheaper...
I don't even own a Switch, yet just preordered it. Nintendo's strategy sadly working, I suppose.
But I like these three too much to pass over them in HD remastered form, so I'll be a sucker and play along to make sure I have this for the day when I do finally buy the system.
While you’re at it, buy a $450 Nintendo Switch to play it on! Ebay, your one stop shop for all things Nintendo ❤️❤️❤️❤️
I just don’t understand why this is a limited release to begin with, and frankly they’re just asking for this to happen with scalpers.
@Rika_Yoshitake Exactly! There has been so much hyperbole and misleading things said about this. It's limited TIME. Anyone who wants a physical copy should be able to get a copy, even if the inital batch sells out on release date.
I'm not sure what's wrong with scalpers? They just want more money. It's not illegal or extremely immoral.
@MoonKnight7 if something is limited edition more people feel a need to buy it before it leaves store shelves. It also leads to it becoming a collectors item down the line.
Unreal & unwarranted. But, to be fair, if you are silly enough to search eBay & pay double before even looking on Nintendo or Amazon then I have no sympathy.
Anyone who pay those prices whilst the game is available digitally as well is just an idiot.
Also it is still available for pre-order on Amazon UK at least.
Anyone who pays that is a mug. I still can't for the life of me fathom why the digital release will disappear after March. Physical prints I get, but digital should always remain for as long as the store is open. Another feather in the cap of not going full-digital in the future, because you never know when it might no longer be for sale if you can't afford (or have too much else to do/play) at the time a game is released.
I honestly don't think it's scalpers fault. Nintendo is first to blame by only offering a limited quantity raising the value of an item. However I have never had a problem getting anything I wanted because I am organized. Others like showing up to a store three days after release and wonder why they're all gone. So admittedly I do not NEED the money but the money I have made off these types of things once a year has paid for my four switches and all my games. People should be more organized but more importantly Nintendo doesn't need to do this.
how about switches with the game downloaded on them, they could already be a thing really.
@LavaTwilight The March limit is for purchase. Those who bought it can still redownload it after they de-list it.
I just keep thinking Nintendo would make more money by having it available until the end of the Switch lifecycle. Would also mean more people have the opportunity to experience Mario games they hadn't grown up with.
I don't know why anyone would buy this pathetic joke of a collection.
Seriously, Super Mario 64 PC with all the incredible upgrades to the models is far better than anything Nintendo does.
@Baker1000 This is a Nintendo only problem bud, they make it difficult due to their obsession with control and punishing their fans.
No need to make sweeping comments about digital. All other platforms are the opposite of Nintendo who are over 20 years behind in all areas.
@ancientlii Games are tied to accounts, so you can simply sell the account instead. Of course, scalpers could still do it, but it's no different than only selling the physical copy if the buyer purchase their Switch too.
As soon as I saw that it was sold out on amazon after 10 minutes of the game being available I just gave up and pre ordered a digital copy on the eshop. With the covid 19 pandemic I aint going to a walmart and risk my health for a physical copy
anyone suprised in the slightess about this
Nintendo encourages this with it's completely anti consumer practices.
Thank goodness for digital copies or this would be basically unobtainable.
@RennanNT i was thinking more the pirate route
Im all digital on Switch so it’s a non-issue for me. Sucks for those hoping to get w physical release early tho.
Why can't they think lmao, I'm expecting it's gonna be mass produced WAY more than any other game, otherwise all they've done is slap together an incomplete and overpriced rom collection, released it in a way that's gonna make a LOT of people miss out OVER CHRISTMAS and make this mess last 6 months
Like how are they gonna make it available from April onwards, and when is Galaxy 2 gonna be added
I pre-ordered one from Best Buy and one from Amazon. One will stay sealed on my Nintendo shelf next to all my Club Nintendo Platinum prizes. I couldn't resist with a limited release of three of my all-time favorite games.
It's a shame scalpers are already preying on people. Hopefully, Nintendo makes enough so that everyone who wants one can get it for it's recommended retail price.
@LavaTwilight yes. If something is delisted, but you already own the license, you can redownload.
@Zimon I think I would just go digital if this is a remote concern
@Dringo
The Legend of Zelda Collectors Edition and Master Quest versions say hello!
Damn I wish I had kept both of those releases!!
I pre-order this one before I even read what was on it.
Pre orders are still available on Amazon and Best Buy. I dont know why people are paying scalpers.
@Rika_Yoshitake Limited time automatically means limited print, ya yockle.
In the U.S. preorders are still available at all the big options, so I'm guessing these are either people who jumped the gun and assumed it would be rarer than it is, or they're just hoping that eventually it sells out.
My guess is Nintendo is making more than enough for anyone who wants a physical copy to get one by March. I still contend that after that all three games will be available individually. You just don't put that much effort into remastering and optimizing for a platform to trash it right away. It's throwing money away.
Sadly, they can never come up with a way to prevent this. There’s no way to ever get everyone to just be cool and let an opportunity to hustle people go. You can’t get all retailers to agree on sales limits, and those limits do effect people who want to buy extra copies for less selfish reasons.
Sure, I usually want to strap these vultures into a machine that never stops punching them, but it’s just the way of the world. I also wish we could just starve them out by not buying from them and say “enjoy playing your 50 copies of that, Mr KaChing, you bought ‘em!” But in the end they force people into it. They might as well stand outside a GameStop and mug people going in to buy theirs.
I’ll just have to hope the pre-purchase order # I have saves my place in line, and they actually hold one in the location given while ordering (that’s how Best Buy does it, at least). If I can’t make it at fisherman’s hours I hope they don’t just give it to some chucklehead grabbing 20. It sure seems like you’re RESERVING a copy and not just pre-paying going by the ordering process. We’ll see, I guess.
It’s a shame, because it nearly makes you wish NIntendo wouldn’t release anything too special because it might become a bitter struggle to get it rather than simply something that’s released and you can go get yours. Within seconds of any big announcement of something I’d like in my mind I’m already rolling my sleeves up anticipating a tussle. I hope this limited time thing won’t apply to 3D World when that comes out.
@Zuljaras Probably!!
I love how people are acting like this is some level of high crime. Blame Nintendo, they facilitate this nonsense every time.
It seems to me like there’s an easy way to prevent this: Nintendo can just say “this is limited time but we will make enough copies to cover demand — everyone who wants one at MSRP will get one if they pre-order today.”
But it’s Nintendo so why bother applying logic?
Super Mario All Stars for the Wii was also a limited release, and there were copies of that sitting on the shelves for years.
I'm not sure what's more sad: that people are already scalping this collection to death, or the fact that people are actually paying their inflated prices. While it will have a short print run, we've seen nothing to suggest that it'll be an extremely limited release.
Still, snagging up a ton of copies of anything and then turning around and inflating the price for resale, while not illegal, is still disgusting.
Hey this will be collectible, already preordered my copy:) at the end of the day you don't have to buy it. I have plenty of Nintendo games in my collection that are worth a lot of money.
@papermarioamiibo people do not like the idea of a group of people buying up a product, especially before its release, to then flip it for a profit. Its seems like a fraudulent form of supply and demand. They wonder if the demand would have been met by the original supplier had not the scalpers come along. Its a problem with fairness, and at want point is this practice no longer ok. Since the product is a game, no one cares to stop it. Also the supply is still there, so seeing it for double its worth is just arrogance and people taking advantage of morons.
This is completely Nintendo's fault, and honestly it is quite anti consumer.
@Cool_Squirtle
Sure, I get that, but it’s Mario. It could clearly be an evergreen title for Nintendo. It’s basically what Disney did by bringing stuff out of the “vault” then putting it back in a month later. It’s just controlling it for the sake of it and it’s pretty anti-consumer. Especially considering that some just don’t have the cash right now cause of the pandemic
@carlos82 It is sold out at a few places in the UK as of posting this reply.
@carlos82 I agree with you, however some people may not have funds ahead of time.
@liljmoore A lot of these scalpers use this as their main income and then claim benefits - from the governments perspective, they don't make any income from selling items on auction/eBay - some people I'm aware of sell celebrity autographs for around £4000 a month, meeting them backstage and having like 20 professional photos signed to resell - they don't claim it as income on top of the benefits and they're bringing like £4500 a month of untaxed earnings - super illegal but very easy to get away with
Nintendo have encouraged the scalpers this time.
@Alundra-1998 where? Amazon, Game and the Nintendo store still have it. Other smaller retailers may not even know how many they're getting at the moment.
Imagine working at a games store in April 2021, and having to tell the parent wanting a buy a Switch and 3D All Stars for their child that you can longer get the latter. Not because of a shortage, but because Nintendo.
Nintendo Vault. Disney does sell monthly limited edition journals my sister in law makes me buy her. Pretty sure she's never used any of them.
Nintendo: you guys like money well we can get you money. Scalpers: YA hows that. Nintendo: (shows of mario 3d all stars) It gets better its a limited release to. Scalpers and Nintendo: (smiling)
@carlos82 ShopTo, The Game Collection, 365 Games etc.
They all show as Out of stock, at least, as of the time of sending you this message.
Who is the fool that bought that SH#IT from ebay.
Maybe it’s actually Nintendo themselves, sneaky way to sell a game at £100+ without much effort!
(I’ll be keeping my single copy)
@Alundra-1998 Thank god I pre-ordered mine on the second day.
@Alundra-1998 I'm not surprised with them, I doubt they'll be getting big allocations. All the major retailers have it and its very easy to find, so im baffled why anyone pays those prices on ebay
Wait until next year, when the Sonic Adventure Collection is an UNLIMITED Collection selling at $40, with Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2, and Big's Big Fishing Adventure 3! (Or Sonic Heroes, if they're gonna go by Official games and not joke games) If they include Sonic Heroes instead of Big's Big Fishing Adventure 3, don't expect Shadow the Hedgehog to be on there!
@Tyranexx “We’ve seen nothing to indicate that it is a limited release” other than they will cease its production in March.......
@Gumbo1995 I don’t know how it is in the UK, but in the US you must report all income, including eBay sales. I sold on eBay for about ten years, had to report it to the tax man every time.
The Nintendo/Scalper alliance holds strong once again.
@carlos82 you’d be surprised. If it’s really limited most of these pre orders are finite and once the stores get them in and any non pre order in store copies dry up it’ll start getting expensive. A lot of Japanese products roll Out like that.
I'm not even pre-ordering this, on release day (UK) I will walk into a store (Argos or Curry's) and purchase it the good old fashioned way, no need for the hysteria around this
Not even willing to pay $59 for it direct from Nintendo 🤷♂️
The limited availability online is good for physical media as these games can only be played after the end date with a physical copy. Thank you Nintendo, great move! No kidding...
@Strictlystyles Yes but that doesn't even apply yet and how Nintendo worded it I would expect it to be available for a while anyway. They'll be expecting this to sell in the millions
I got mine pre-ordered. So should be good.
I’m wary of scalpers but I don’t hate them as much, It really depends on what they are selling. For instance, I had no problem paying 450 USD for a Nintendo Switch because the scalper I bought it from received it before release date and I got to have the console in hand two days before the official release. But the Amiibo scalpers are scum for buying out all of the Amiibos to create the scarcity in the first place.
Scalpers suck hardcore.
@Rika_Yoshitake What do you think available for a limited time means exactly?
@carlos82 I mean the writing seems to be on the wall already. A lot of stores are selling out allocated pre orders so I’m pretty sure few retail copies will be around at launch. The only thing we don’t know is if Nintendo will be making more waves of physical copies. Even if they are, the game will sell at their expectations BECAUSE of the limited banner. Both digitally and physically so I don’t think that’s too much of an issue
Y'know scalpers, there's a thing called a job?
Scalpers are supposed to be illegal anyway, right? Because people are screwed over by buying a game at inflated prices only to find out when they open the casing, there's no game inside. Then they sue eBay or any other online website. Just my opinion.
@HobbitGamer It depends on distribution as well. Some areas and stores will see tons of an item, while other areas and stores see little to none at all.
@Strictlystyles This would have sold big anyway, its 3 of the best games Nintendo have made and as far as I can see its only small retailers who are selling out. I've just been on Amazon and it'll let me order 30 copies! I know one store owner personally and they haven't even been told how many they'll get just to get interested numbers and they'll be sent to him.
But still why would anyone buy this from a scalper today when I can buy it easily from so many retailers?
I like Spawn Wave. He's really grown on me. Good content.
@LavaTwilight Its available to preorder from Smyths and Gamestop in Ireland.
@carlos82 yea there are still big retailers with stock but I can see those drying up soon. The way resellers work is they throw up sales for two reasons 1) get a leg up and have the auctions And sales up there the moment people start looking to the aftermarket, they get to be the first up. 2) pricing high or at weird pricing 1-8% of the time will actually get you a dumb sale from someone who doesn’t know any better, and they can always change the pricing once the aftermarket starts popping. It’s just taking advantage of opportunities
Life is hard, write an article about it, attract people blaming someone for it, profit.
If you think this is bad, what 'til you hear about the entire economic system.
Gd Nintendo, I know you are trying to be like that all stars on Wii but that was a bad idea. Stuff like this makes me want to just pop in some roms cause seriously if you guys are going to artificially inflate the price of old games and then make it a haven for scalpers you don't deserve my money. At least for this title, and I ownmost of their other first party stuff (Wii U and Switch)
@San_D,
It's not Nintendo's fault if a scalper want's to buy an item and mark up the price for a large profit, and to be honest there will be loads of copies of this game to satisfy demand, and theres always the digital version if all else fails.
@Roibeard64 just looked and I can corroborate your claim. I should have added that it wasn't available at the time I posted my response. O well... still managed to get it and for less. And the important thing is no scalpers were used in the process of my purchase.
But I can still preorder the game...
I wonder how bad it would be for my account to “buy” all of these and not pay for them.
@johnvboy it is when they announce the game as a limited run before it's even out. What is the point of not trying to meet demand?
@LavaTwilight I pre ordered mine from smyths last Thursday.
It's often the easiest to preorder ifrom n ireland particularly when amazon is taking awhile to list it.
@TG16_IS_BAE I meant limited run. It's not like there's going to be a single print run of only 3,000 copies via LRG. While there will only be a few months of availability, chances are high there will be multiple print runs.
@Tyranexx Are you talking about the Limited Run Games website? 'Cause that's not mentioned anywhere for this game. This is a limited edition print...they already announced they will stop printing them past March, hence...limited run, limited print, lol.
These were popping up minutes after the direct ended. I have it preordered but I may just sit on it until next year see what the market is for it. Definitely won't be starved for things to play for the rest of the year so I'm willing to be patient!
@doctorhino,
They said it was a limited time offer, not a limited run game, you and others are inventing issues that just not confirmed, you have no idea how many copies of this game are going to be available.
@Yosher reason why to start removing these price gouging pos hands would be a proper punishment for ripping people off.
@RiasGremory,
Define ripping people off, as I said there is no need beyond laziness for a customer to have to resort from buying of these sellers on E-bay, there will be more than enough physical copies available for customers at launch and beyond, Amazon UK have not sold out as yet and their pre-orders have been up for days now.
Nintendo WANTED this to happen.
@johnvboy Ok so what does a limited time offer mean to you if the game is full price and comes with no pre-order bonus?
@doctorhino
Exactly what it says, this is a limited time offer not a limited run game, so it's not saying in anyway there are only limited numbers of the physical copies of the game.
The price is fine for three games, my bet is it will still be available but at a higher price.
@johnvboy nah you didn't answer the question. What is a limited time offer? Usually people use that term when there is an incentive like a sale or offer. I don't see what here is being offered for a limited time
If the game itself is only being made or sold for a limited time that's the same thing as limiting the number of copies.
A higher price is highly unlikely, there is no switch game that costs more than 60 for the base cart.
@carlos82,
Laziness fella.
I pay $100 for Nintendo games all the time!
I live in Canada.
@RennanNT Can’t download Contra, Castlevania, or Gradius ReBirth. Once Nintendo shuts down a shop, your stuff is gone unless you made a backup.
@johnvboy When something is being sold for a limited time, like this game, that...kinda puts a cap on how many physical units can get manufactured.
@Retro_Player_77 Why would Nintendo sell something for $60, with the hope that someone will buy it and sell it for double??
@doctorhino,
No it's not, if Nintendo had stated they were going to make this game available for a limited time with only a limited number of copies also available, I would be in total agreement with you.
But of course we do not know how many copies will be available, but I am pretty sure Nintendo will make more than enough.
@johnvboy There will be a limited number of copies because they will cease production in March. When you set a deadline, you can’t also make an infinite amount of the thing you are selling lmao
@TG16_IS_BAE,
They could still make more than enough to satisfy demand.
@johnvboy Nintendo never makes enough, from Switch shortages to classic NES/SNES shortages. Pay attention to their track record, they have a reputation for shortages.
@johnvboy Call me when they actually do that, lol
@TG16_IS_BAE Mario hype. They are also banking on selling digital copies to the people who couldn't snag one since it makes them more money
@doctorhino Yep, great strat for Nintendo, terrible for consumers.
@TG16_IS_BAE,
The demand for the Switch console has been the issue to be fair, and Nintendo has not done that bad in all honesty.
@TG16_IS_BAE,
How much demand for these games?, I mean to the wider consumer, yes all the core people on here want this, but in reality how many of the mass Switch audience want these games?
It's not like Nintendo have done this on a main game like Animal crossing, and I am pretty sure Nintendo will be well aware of how much money these games will make.
@johnvboy again if they are going to be making enough to meet demand, why would they even need to tell us it's a limited. Games go out of print all the time and are still available on Amazon without an announcement.
It's like you are convinced there is nothing to see here but there was an announcement before the game even released.
@doctorhino,
They have simply stated the game will only be available for a certain time, beyond that there is no further information, so people are jumping to worst case scenario conclusions.
@Zochmenos,
Nintendo know what they are doing, they ave made it a limited time offer so they sell more copies, genius move really.
@johnvboy it's not hard to predict. They did the exact same thing with all stars on Wii for his 25th anniversary
@johnvboy I am not saying the scalpers are not at fault, but Nintendo encouraging them through manufactured limitations is definitely not acceptable. It's not that Nintendo doesn't know that scalpers exist, yet they try to drive demand through this stunt and thereby encourage them. And if they think this is a genius move at the time of this crisis, I can't see them in that "family-friendly" light they relish themselves to see in.
@johnvboy Then stop acting like you are a business-insider.
@San_D Very good points, right here.
If you think this is bad than check out how much they are trying to sell the preorder of game and watch for.
@TG16_IS_BAE,
Never said anything of the sort, but I am sure Nintendo know what they are doing, unless of course they require business advice from people on internet forums and comment sections.
@Zochmenos,
Exactly, only very stupid people think Nintendo are stupid.
Why don't these people just invest in the stock market or something instead or trying to squeeze an extra $40 box from a videogame? Seriously know people that have made thousands over the past few months in the stock market. It just baffles me.
@San_D,
Don't believe the e-bay hype, as there are people buying items at higher prices on many products that are available at normal prices elsewhere.
And again we simply do not know how supply for this game will be in the first place, perhaps these guys on e-bay will be left with unsold copies.
I already Pre Ordered a copy from Best Buy and last I checked you still could. Don't buy from these Ebay A-Holes anyway. Buy it Digital if you must, but don't reward these jerks.
@tylerryan79 I appreciate your thoughts and understand some of where you're coming from. Ultimately I believe that we have a philosophical difference of opinion. I personally don't buy games just to sell them much higher. But I do sell games sometimes. a couple years ago I sold my entire PS1 FF collection and received far more than I originally payed for it. I did the same with my Resident Evil Gamecube collection. Am I a scalper or price gouger? I sold games that I bought (in some cases decades ago) for more than I originally payed. They were part of my collection and I had played them all. At what point am I a scalper/gouger? Am I not because I am selling my old personal collection? I can assure you that a large reason I sold them is because I discovered that I could bring in more than they're original cost. I'd already played many times. The money they brought in had more value, to me, then they did as a collection in my basement.
I don't think most would call me a scalper. But why not? Because the games were old? Because I'd already played them? Because I didn't purchase them with the express purpose of selling them?
The seller you call a scalper isn't any different than me. He just sells faster. Vilifying someone for practicing an economically wise move is silly. These guys just want a return. Just a little faster. But we all have opinions. 🤷🏻♂️
Personally I am not fond of those app bot things that buy up everything, as soon as it's available. That legit seems wrong. But...but...in most cases it's not illegal. So where does this leave us?
I've already preordered this game. If I'm still alive in a couple decades and I still own this game, it is likely that I will sell this game. Hopefully for a profit.
@TG16_IS_BAE and that goes for all digital purchases... The user I replied to was under the impression they couldn't redownload it after March next year, which isn't the case.
@RennanNT Steam is still up and running, they don't shut down their shops whenever new hardware come out. Nintendo is a fly by night company, when it comes to their digital storefronts.
@papermarioamiibo,
Well said, and some good points, another culprit is the evergreen nature of Nintendo games, they just do not seem to drop in price, you can buy a game and play it, then sell it for a very small loss on your initial investment.
@dr-gorgo lol example I bought digital.after march 31st I can still redownload it.if you dont buy it before march 31st.you cant buy it April 1st.but i can still redownload it.digital I mean
What about car dealerships which raise the price of cars above MRSP. These things happen all the time. Nintendo hasn't helped the situation and to act like they are innocent is silly. They have made it limited time purposely to get people to panic buy to increase their profits in the next few months.
I don't know why you would buy from any of these scalpers, when you can just easily buy it from anywhere.
There's quite a big difference between limited time and limited run.
They could run 1500 or they could run 15mil.
I want get a physical copy but I still have to get money for it. I hope Nintendo does some sort of restock
@johnvboy My point is, Nintendo could have not pulled this "limited time" stunt, and made it a regular package (maybe sell at a "discounted" $60 till March and then drive it up to $70 or higher if they thought $60 is not good enough for this). Instead they create this illusion that you have a slim chance of getting it, which, at first place accelerates their sales till March. The eBay/scalper thing is simply an aftermath of this phenomenon, and laughably those who deride these scalpers go and pre-order digital copies. It is the same behavior (FOMO) and both Nintendo and scalpers are just taking advantage of people. You may still defend Nintendo, but their actions are equally despicable. And I am not advising how a billion dollar corporation should be run, I am just saying how they should live up to the public image they have set up for themselves. I have had my moments of doubt about their facade, but this incident was enough to show they just run a different flavor of the AAA business.
@TG16_IS_BAE Can't agree more about your comparisons between eShop and Steam - exactly why I am starting to feel that I should rather switch to Steam for indies - it's really cheaper as they provide localized pricing in my country (for example, Obra Dinn would cost me 1/3 of the price I paid on eShop), and I can play those games for years, if not decades. Only downside is the Switch's portability, which is why I am still putting up with those insane prices and crazy policies of Nintendo.
Spawn Wave are one of those influencers that clamor to have the "virtual console" and end up playing Super Mario 64 completely stone-faced.
I'm a stickler for physical, but I'd 100% buy digital than reward a scalper. I used to really get hot about this stuff, but anymore I just don't care. If I miss out on something I miss out. Oh well.
@TG16_IS_BAE Sorry, but what's your point? I still don't see why you're marking me.
3D All Stars will work exactly like any other switch digital purchase for the buyers. What's different is that people won't be able to buy it after March.
When the store servers goes down, redownload for all games will go down together with it.
Whether Valve will ever shutdown steam or Nintendo will shutdown the eshop like they did with Wii/DS is something only time will tell. In no point I assumed either way, in case you're thinking I did.
I pre-ordered my copy of Super Mario 3D All-Stars already thankfully....hate scalpers.
scalpers are some of the most saddest humans in the world. that said luckily i have an order down before those tools can do anything.
Here's another issue I have with all this, the fact people automatically assume if somebody puts an item on e-bay for a large profit it will sell, when in fact many will get burned by the whole process , it's like those rare UK 50 pence pieces that some idiots have listed for £69,000 pounds, when the same 50 pence coins are being sold on the same site for £3.00, it's so fake it's not even funny.
@LavaTwilight Sorry if you've been answered already, yes you will be able to buy it forever if it's in your account. I was able to do it on 3DS for the old 3D trailers and Zelda 4 Swords.
@San_D,
Well again there is not concrete information on firstly how these games will sell, and secondly how many physical copies Nintendo are going to make available, a few idiots on e-bay trying to make a quick buck is hardly indicative of the wider market and other retail outlets, and as I have said before people have bought other items of e-bay with large margins, even though the items in question were available elsewhere for the normal price.
Remember it takes two parties for things like this, the seller and the purchaser, one can't exist without the other.
@Alundra-1998 it will be available until Feb. I am guessing that is when production will end not sales. There will be a mass amount most likely and scalpers will be at a loss
That is my prediction.
@RennanNT My point was clear, you’re choosing not to understand it. I didn’t type anything complex lol
But fanboys gotta fanboy....
While I disagree with the limited run of this collection, no one should buy from the scalpers now. Stores are still taking pre-orders and "worse case" scenario, you can still download it.
@AgentGuapo @RennanNT @Chlocean That's good to know. When I owned a Wii I couldn't re-download that which was removed from the Wii eshop. I'm glad Nintendo have changed that now. I actually don't often buy from the eshop, only what is not originally a Retail release.
@TG16_IS_BAE It wasn't complex, just completed unrelated to what I said. I already knew all that and didn't say anything which goes contrary to that. Imagine you saying "it's cold today" and someone tags you with "winter is one of the 4 seasons."
I was giving you the chance to fix any possible misunderstanding on my part or yours, but sounds like the misunderstanding was expecting an civil conversation.
Have a good night!
@RennanNT G'night fanboy!
@LavaTwilight was that because the Wii eshop closed? You still should have been able to redownload anything you purchased when it was open. Of course. But also, the Wii eshop purchases were tied to the system you bought it on. Nintendo changed to an account based system since then, so purchased are redownloaded easily. Does anybody here have experience with something that has been delisted on the eshop and can attest to being able to redownload? Switch specifically.
@AgentGuapo it was wii eshop and the Donkey Kong Country games.
Nintendo sponsored scalping.
@Crono1973 nintendo doesnt sponsor that bs and you know it and besides scalping also happen on other systems too not just nintendo.
When I bought my SECOND switch, I went to 2 Best Buys and 4 Walmarts and at the 3RD Walmart I go to the electronics and this guy is buying ALL SIX OF THEM. I Look at him and go "Are you serious right now. I just want one, why are you selling them ALL TO THIS GUY." And the DICK turns around to me and goes "Well you should have gotten here sooner. I will sell you one for 500 out in the parking lot."
I wanted to BEAT HIS ASS AND WALMART FOR SELLING THEM ALL.
@RiasGremory Nintendo has decided to make even the digital version limited, they are only helping scalpers here.
@TG16_IS_BAE Correct, LRG wasn't mentioned in the article. I was using LRG as an example, particularly with how truly limited some physical releases of normally digital titles have been. I wouldn't consider Super Mario 3D All-Stars nearly that scarce.
Yes, it's limited, but I doubt to where this will be another NES Classic fiasco.
This is one of those rare times where I would prefer to use verbal context vs. text on a screen.....
It's probably Nintendo scalping it themselves.. sneakinly trying to get a few extra dollars
Ordered 2 for the library at work for because I’m worried one might end up stolen.
If you don't like the scalpers, let them be frustrated with not selling even one copy! Then you can support SEGA, because as evidenced with the Genesis/Mega Drive Mini, SEGA Does What Nintendon't, and that includes giving customers a reason to support them! They'll come out with a Sonic Adventure Collection with Sonic Adventure DX, Sonic Adventure 2 Battle, and Big's Big Fishing Adventure 3, and it would be unscalpable, because the collection would be unlimited! And there will be a Sonic Twitter Takeover commemorating the 30th Anniversary of Sonic, and the 20th Anniversary of Sonic Adventure 2!
I find it ridiculous that people are already buying from the scalpers when the product is literally available for retail price anyway. Even so, I'll admit that I pre-ordered a physical copy with the express intent of selling it several months down the line once it's off the market. I don't intend on participating in egregious price gouging, but I certainly do hope to make more than I initially spent.
I guess I just don't really understand how people can get so bent out of shape over this. While it's for sale, there will be more than enough digital copies to go around--so accessibility isn't an issue--and the physical media market has always carried a higher price tag. Buying physical is thus a deliberate decision the buyer freely makes, and if the market dictates that the product is going for more than standard MSRP, then that's simply the actual price of the product. It's basic supply/demand economics.
nintendo fans pure trash. THE PREORDERS ARE STILL WIDELY AVAILABLE. watch what happens when its easily picked up on launch day and no one buys these scalped games
@Crono1973 whats funny is IT WILL BE WIDELY AVAILABLE ON LAUNCH DAY watch the black market be trash
@super-nintendo whats funny IS PREORDERS ARE STILL AVAILABLE THEY WILL FAIL ON LAUNCH DAY because they will be available LMAO trolls
@YoshiAngemon If you don't like the scalpers, let them be frustrated with not selling even one copy!
In this post we pretend that one person can prevent all sales to scalpers.
Most retailers seem to be selling Super Mario All*Stars, in other words it is still presumably in stock everywhere. There is no reason to be scalping and buying from scalpers.
Did they fix the spelling mistake of Yoshi 'It that really you' or any other bugs, who knows.
Just because the game has a run for six-months in brick and mortar stores does not mean the game will be difficult to find in stores months after the fact. Some Atlus games that have similar print-runs tend to be easily found months after launch because games are made to fill the demand. I would argue the game's price won't start creeping up till late 2021 because of excess stocking as stores will want extra copies to sell post the March cut-off.
Though to be fair I have thought of the idea of picking up an extra copy sealed to see if I can sell it later for above retail... The funny thing is stuff like this is why the Comics Industry crashed in the mid-90s and issues of Death of Superman are sold at pennies on the dollar in today's secondary market. When everyone buys something because of perceived scarcity the product is no longer all that limited or hard to find. Maybe because everyone is buying extra copies to sell later there might be a surplus of the game on the secondary market and it won't become an expensive pickup till years later.
I “ really hope” the scalpers don’t have another halo 2 steel book problem ( heavy sarcasm)
After just 4 days, Mario 3D All-Stars is already the 14th best-selling video game product and 2nd best-selling game of 2020 on Amazon US, yet it is still available for pre-order.
Unless Amazon is getting some kind of preferential treatment that we don't know about, it is clear that Nintendo is shipping a ton of retail copies. Supply won't be a big issue at all.
Nintendo: a scalper's best friend
@westman98 Damg its #1 now on Amazon best sellers. Avengers, or Tony Hawk didnt even get in top 10.
I still remember an eBay listing for a Silver Mario Amiibo fresh off of the assembly line being sold successfully for $10,000.00, just six weeks before it hit stores for the then-standard MSRP of $12.99. Some people really do have more money than sense.
@johnvboy You are so intent on demonizing the scalpers and their buyers, you do not see my point. They are only a part of the problem, and Nintendo is equally guilty in driving this behavior. Why do they even need to take the digital version of the games away? At a point when Microsoft is vouching for 20 years worth of backward compatibility, PC-s practically allow anything that was ever released on the platform to be played, Nintendo thinks the opposite is better. I do regard Nintendo as great game developers, but Nintendo the publisher is every bit as scummy as any other AAA publisher.
@illmatic20xx
You are looking at the hourly best-sellers list, which is not that reliable in terms of determining a game's performance.
Here is the best-seller's list for the entirety of 2020 thus far: https://www.amazon.com/gp/bestsellers/2020/videogames/ref=zg_bs_tab_t_bsar
I mean... I just went into Amazon and pre-ordered it... I do not understand why people are buying it from resellers... They are not even trying the retailers...
If people want to waste their money buying at inflated prices, then of course people will take advantage.
All it takes is people to be sensible, and these scalpers will be sat on extra copies of things that they can't sell.
I bought 2 copies from Shopto but only so my daughter can have her own copy
I already bought my physical copy, but I'll not open. I'll buy a digital one for me later and maybe at 2022 I'll sell it sealed.
@dojmin Exactly. And great avatar!
Pre-ordered yesterday for RRP from Amazon. I want this, but refuse to give satisfaction to these clowns.
Why the need to go to a scalper...
Just pre-order it, many places still offering it for pre-order...
@San_D,
I have no issue with the scalpers to be honest, it's a free marketplace and things will only sell for what people are willing to pay.
You can't lay the blame at the manufacturer, they are not telling people to buy something and then inflate the price.
I will not be buying things for over their retail price, because for the vast majority of the time there is simply no need to.
@msvt Well, those were only available with bundles or via the catalogue.
When I say not going anywhere, I just meant they’re not going to be hard to pre-order
@johnvboy But Nintendo are trying to put a sense of exclusivity to the game, thereby preying on the FOMO of people. It's just that this is being manifested too early, otherwise, it would definitely happen post March. If Nintendo is not trying to drive up their own sales by this cheap practice, why limit the digital availability of a game?
By the way, I won't pay Nintendo a single dollar for this game at least. I am boycotting this one.
@Zorox88 it IS a premium product, even if mario 3d all stars produced 10 million copies youd still complain about "illusionary premium" product.
this isnt sonic or sega or persona or even pokemon hell Animal crossing is a sales beast
this is Super Mario , the "premium" 3D platformer ip.
you think nintendo is NOT the house of Mario?
mario is as popular as the mouse.
of course i preordered the collection, the mario kart AR game and the game and watch.
im a nintendo fan, sega fan persona fan and a hardcore pokemon fan. so am i biased in my observation on Japans richest company at the moment...
@San_D you know you can report them to ebay right?
just like GW indomitus box for warhammer 40k 9th edition.
https://www.ebay.com.au/help/policies/prohibited-restricted-items/reporting-price-gouging-ebay?id=5105
@HSuzumiyaVI You probably have not followed what I am trying to say here. I never buy anything from eBay, and will definitely not buy this game from anywhere. I refuse to give in to Nintendo's shady business practices.
@Cool_Squirtle according to ebay it is illegal
https://www.ebay.com.au/help/policies/prohibited-restricted-items/reporting-price-gouging-ebay?id=5105
@San_D how about we start a psa for people to report all price gougers on ebay, ill do my part, people think this is legal but ebay defines it as against the terms and conditions on ebay, they got reported for price gouging indomitus warhammer 40k boxes until Games Workshop went print to demand till december 2020. @NintendoLife you need to add the report to ebay on your article otherwise people think this practice is legal and tolerated, its not.
@San_D,
Because we they see it as a limited time offer to coincide with Mario's 35th birthday, it's not like Nintendo are doing this with every game, you may see these titles released individually on the Nintendo e-Shop after the offer runs out.
But I still maintain that we do not know enough about the physical games availability to make any judgement or complain about potential stock shortages, as for the digital release being stopped at the same time is a moot point, as it will have no bearing whatsoever on physical copies being sold on E-bay for higher prices.
@LavaTwilight "Secured my physical copy. If I were to go digital with this and something happened to the Switch, I couldn't reclaim it. At least with physical I'd have a better chance of keeping hold of it"
They've already confirmed that you can re-download it after the sale ends if you purchased it digitally.
@westman98 Lol makes sense. Im amazed its #14 so far though.
What a baffling, irritating company Nintendo sometimes are. Absolutely stupid to make this limited.
@Dringo
The whole 'limited" decision is baffling on this one. I bet they will go individually on the eshop after this.
Another item I was I could have got that scalped away was that Animal Crossing Switch.. ahhh! it was gone before I could find it online, same day it was announced.
@johnvboy The only game that has sold better than Mario 3D-All Stars this entire year is Animal Crossing New Horizons. And considering pre-orders are still open makes me think this game will be more than in stock throughout the holidays. The limited-time part of this entire release is odd (unless the theory of the games showing up later on the eShop is true), but it won't be limited quantity like something from Limited Run. Don't forget even if it's sold out in two-weeks this game will have more than enough chances to get multiple print runs between now and March.
People need to relax and just wait and see what happens when it comes to availability.
@johnvboy @HSuzumiyaVI I see Nintendo as the primary price gouger in this case. They are simply forcing consumers to buy a highly-coveted game within 6 months, without any chance of waiting for a discount, and at a time which can be considered the worst since video games came into existence. They may later re-release these games individually, they may charge a higher price per game, they may do a lot of things - all this is conjecturing, versus their statement, i.e., these games won't be available after March. What do you expect general public to do? Wait till Black Friday 2021? I am not saying go to eBay as the first resort, but that will be probably be the only resort after June/July 2021. All this because Nintendo wants to do what no one else does. I understand we won't agree about this, if you want to support Nintendo on this, best of luck.
@electrolite77 It's not stupid on their part, it's a pure marketing gimmick to attach a sense of premium/rare to this package and thereby sell a lot of copies. Cheap tactics at an unfortunate time. I'd love it if they failed hard on this one, but I guess fanboys have already made it a successful move.
I can't believe how many people are ok with Nintendo making the digital version a limited release. Maybe they would like that to become the norm?
@HSuzumiyaVI actually that policy specifically refers to "essential items at reasonable prices during times of increased demand due to emergencies“(hand sanitizer/masks/toilet paper during covid) and even that isn't illegal in a federal sense, it's just against ebay's new rules.
https://www.ebay.com.au/help/policies/prohibited-restricted-items/price-gouging-policy?id=5106
People price gouge collectibles on eBay all the time.
@Crono1973 Exactly! This is exactly why Nintendo can even think of pulling off this stunt - there is a section of their userbase who are probably willing to pay a monthly subscription of $60 to play one 8-bit game and be proud that Lord Nintendo has given them access to a super secret society.
@Yosher Got a link to the art?
@liveswired this isn't just a gaming issue. Look at Spotify, etc where an artist can remove their entire work leaving people who only stream without a way to listen unless they go download everything to keep. TV streaming services also, just look at Disney removing all their content from other services to start up their own. The fact is, without physical copies any content can be removed from a service leaving you stuck if that's your only way of getting it.
@San_D That is extreme. Nintendo fans tend to be okay with Nintendo Online because it's maybe the price of a cup of coffee a month to play games online and they gain access to the NES and SNES back catalogue as a bonus. If any subscription were $60 a month is would have to be an insane amount of content you're getting beyond playing an insane amount of games like Xbox All Access. No company would charge that as no large amounts of users would ever pay that kind of premium unless they were like gaining access to every game ever published by that company or something bonkers like that and it solved world hunger.
Nintendo fans have been very vocal that they are unhappy about the limited Digital availability of 3D All-Stars. We're just not panicking about it because odds are on favourite that if Nintendo took the times to port these games to the Switch that they'd release them on the eShop as well at some point. That and the fact that this game is still open for pre-order despite already being the 2nd best selling game of the year means supply will not be an issue. That and Nintendo has done this before... i.e. Mario All-Stars (Wii), Metroid Prime Trilogy (Wii), Ocarina of Time: Master Quest (GCN), Zelda Collection (GCN) and I can go on and on about limited collections being in short print runs by Nintendo. A lot of these were only available via pre-order of other games or part of Nintendo Power promotions. Doesn't make what the Big N is doing correct, but 3D All-Stars marks FAAARRRR from the first time Nintendo has done this or the last time.
@Wexter That $60 statement was a hyperbole.
Secondly, them doing this with physical games before digital games were a thing is not the same situation as now, and does not make it any less anti-consumer. You can argue all day that this is not anti-consumer and it is Nintendo's way of treating its customers, and how they have printed gazillions of copies so that scalpers can't gouge their customers, but that won't change the fact that amidst a crisis Nintendo arm twisted their fanbase into buying time limited digital copies of its game to bolster their fiscal results.
@San_D When have I ever stated this was not a dick move by Nintendo? I agree very much so that a limited digital run is a very bizarre business choice if they do not plan to either A) Have all three games on the eShop within the year of 2021 in some way, or B) Have Mario 64 as part of the Nintendo 64 Online service with Sunshine and Galaxy on the eShop separately. If anything these sales numbers show there is a massive demand for these games and Nintendo would be foolish to not re-release them. I'm just pointing out that you're behaving as if this was the first time Nintendo ever did this in general. If anything previous practices as Master Quest was only given out as Wind Waker pre-order bonus or the Zelda Collection being sold through Nintendo Power or by buying a special Silver Gamecube was way worse. Yet you don't hear those games criticized in the same way even at the time. Yet we are treating 3D All-Stars as if this is a new phenomenon.
Secondly, none of us were in the Nintendo boardroom when this decision was made. Also, Nintendo has no control over scalpers as scalpers will scalp. How many times have we seen X game on eBay and sold for ridiculous prices just because someone got it a week early? Or so-called "rare" game get sold for triple the going rate because it's SEEALLLLD (insert Pat the NES Punk voice) or in today's market "graded." If you want to end scalpers don't buy through scalpers and they will not scalp in our hobby. Buy only through Mom and Pop shops locally or through a verified and reputable second-hand vendor.
That and us as the consumer need to decide what is important to us not Nintendo. If I had to choose between feeding my family or Mario 3D All-Stars I'd choose my family no one is twisting my arm. If you're feeling like Nintendo is forcing you to buy a product because of perceived scarcity you have an impulse control problem. Gaming is a luxury hobby already the same as model kits, comics, playing a TCG (Pokemon, Magic and YuGiOh) and other mainstream hobbies. If you're already in financial straights why are you even looking at these to begin with? Gaming has never been a cheap hobby the way something like Basketball is where all you need is a ball, a hoop and some friends. And why stop there if we are talking about twisting consumers' arms how about Microsoft and Sony both releasing next-gen consoles that cost way more than a $60 game during the crisis? How is that not worse than what Nintendo is doing if we are talking about gouging consumers during a crisis?
@Wexter,
You would think certain people on here and other forums were in Nintendo's boardroom when all these decisions were made, and know exactly how many physical copies of the game will be made, and the exact demand for them, in the real world however none of them know for sure, so really creating problems that might exist without any concrete evidence to back any of this up.
@Wexter Except that Sony and Microsoft are not the topic of this conversation, neither are Activision or EA or Ubisoft who gouge customers through microtransactions. And I believe no one will choose a Mario game over feeding their family. You are twisting the logic really bad. I'll say it one last time, if you don't get it, no problem. The issue here is, Nintendo creates a scarcity just to drive sales in the short term. They haven't stated their plans beyond March, so you are just guessing that they will release these in some form or the other. This is an abnormal business practice, and no amount of past history should justify this. Thanks for the conversation.
@San_D You know for there to be a conversation it requires you to open your ears and listen and not be so defensive because someone pointed out an opposing view? Either way, you're doing just as much speculation assuming there will be a scarcity when we have no idea how many copies will be printed and sold. Could be anywhere between 5 million to 12 million units based on reports of this being the 2nd best selling game of 2019 (with pre-orders still open). And this is within the first month. Also, I agreed this is not a good consumer decision so I agreed with you without the sensationalism and just playing devil's advocate with my points if you actually read what I was talking about. Just relax for a moment and take a breath rather than taking everything so seriously. You'll develop fewer heart problems that way.
@Wexter I have been listening to the same argument in this thread about how Nintendo has printed millions of copies and there will be no scarcity. Honestly, I don't care about the scarcity and this collection any more, and I'm not taking it seriously. It has been a waste of time and I don't want to waste more.
I'll blame Nintendo on this one. They are selling three overpriced ports done with the least effort possible and making it a limited release for the sole reason of creating a sense of urgency. Nintendo KNOWS making it limited will boost sales, be it from scalpers or otherwise. Why would they limit the digital release? It's just dumb and anti-consumer. They are slowly becoming another EA and it sucks.
@TG16_IS_BAE No, you do need to declare it in the UK, however it is so easy to get away with not declare it that i know many many people who don't and use it to make thousands a month - I could report them fort tax fraud but don't know who they know kind of thing
@johnvboy Oh they're definitely not stupid. Just a-holes.
@Crono1973 Fanboyism innit. They can do know wrong in some people's eyes no matter what they do.
@San_D haha, true
@Cool_Squirtle not so, eBay took down listings of the warhammer 40k individual box before GW declared this it was print to demand until December. The all stars collection is 60usd so "reasonable price" is 60.

Also, look at funko pops.
@msvt Now that was limited in every respect
Gamestop employees did this with Fire Emblem Fates SE, the one and only version with the entire game on it, insisting no such thing existed, the (many various) employees bought it up ( limited editions) sold them on eBay at highly inflated prices. They're still there today for those god awful USD $2-$300 and used now no less. People also hoarded those Fire Emblem S.E. 3ds' L.E. consoles they were nowhere to be found, they're just now becoming reasonable.
@Baker1000 however streaming is different to purchasing. You don't expect streamed content to stay forever. You expect change with streaming hence why its monthly subscription.
Nintendo are the only company who treat purchased content as streaming/rental content.
@WavedasherX they all look better and are remastered by fans on PC.
omg people have actually already bought some of them scalpers games on eBay, how are people this stupid, the game is still available for pre-order, wow i am baffled by this!
@liveswired yup, been playing SM64 PC lately. It's nice.
So it’s been over a month since launch and I FINALLY picked up the remaining stock at Walmart. They had quite a few left because it’s in an area with less games savvy people. I plan on selling them for $60. I’m Robin Hooding the scalpers. 😎
