I buy physical games, whenever possible. I've imported several games that were digital only in the States. I also have a massive retro collection, so I really appreciate having a library of games that I can play anytime. I keep physical books, movies and music, as well. I do think services like NSO, Netflix, Spotify and Kindle are great for convenience. When unlimited 5g is available for a reasonable price, I'll definitely augment my collection with cloud games. I just won't pay full price for them. Cloud gaming seems best as a service. It will never do as a replacement for physical media though. As it is, I have frequent internet outages where I live. I have no problem entertaining myself without internet access and I plan to keep it that way.
I'm just about to finish my 100% run through of all three games in Super Mario 3D Allstars. Those last few stars/shines are always the trickiest though, so it might take longer than I expect. I also plan on starting Pikmin 3 Deluxe. I completed the demo, so I'll move my save file and continue from there. Then there's the Hyrule Warriors demo that I'll finally give some time to. If I have extra time I'll start No More Heroes.
Odyssey is my favorite Switch exclusive, by far. It's only second to 64 in the series for me. It feels like a true sequel to 64/Sunshine that I wasn't sure if we would ever get. The moons are like a cross between Stars in 64 and blue coins in Sunshine. There's just so much content of every difficulty level. 3D Mario is my favorite videogame series and Odyssey is right up there with the best. It's already in the rotation of my most replayed games. I really hope we see a sequel.
@BlubberWhale Yes. I own that one, along with most of the 3D platformers released on the Switch. Super Lucky's Tale was a blast! For the previous couple of generations, Mario was the only way to scratch the 3D platforming itch without going retro. I haven't had so many great 3D platformers on a system since the N64.
I use it about 50/50 between docked and handheld. I also enjoy tabletop for certain games. Depending on my week it can swing more to one side than the other. That's the beauty of the Switch. It accommodates me, rather than requiring me to make time for it. I hope the hybrid concept is here to stay. I can't see myself going back to tethered consoles for anything other than retro now.
I can't resist a 3D platformer. This one looks pretty good, too. I've been spoiled with 3D platformers this generation. I hope the genre is back to stay.
Considering how well the Switch is selling, I find Patchter's assessment dumb. People obviously like the hybrid concept, as the original model seems to sell better than the lite. Personally, I play about 50/50 between docked and handheld. I also enjoy playing tabletop with a pro controller. The versatility and convenience of the Switch, along with it's expansive library, are exactly what makes it so popular. No matter the lifestyle, the Switch accommodates.
It certainly deserves to be localized already. I have a reproduction cartridge of the unofficial translation. It's a fantastic game from start to finish. I would gladly jump at an official release. Better yet, Nintendo should utilize the Link's Awakening engine and give the entire Mother series a full remake.
I'm going to try and pick up that special edition. I wish the NES cartridge actually worked though. I have a Retro USB AVS and I would love to play it on that.
My theory for the limited releases is Nintendo plans on eventually putting these games on NSO. Perhaps, they're even planning on making a premium tier for the service.
As someone who owns all three titles in the collection in their original format, I greatly appreciate having them available on Switch. Despite exaggerated complaints, they're actually very competent ports of three excellent retro titles. All three have benefited from improvements to frame rate and resolution as well as other small tweaks that improve the overall experience on a modern console. Chances are Nintendo wants to leave their options open, such as releasing the titles on NSO or something of that nature. The collection is merely meant to celebrate the 35th anniversary of Mario. When you look at how much the games sell for individually in their original format, the collection is a steal. They're truly great games. If it weren't for the collection, there wouldn't have been much to play from Nintendo at the time. You can bet we haven't seen the last of these games.
@Pandy Ocarina of Time is one of the handful of games that I find endlessly replayable. I don't know if you're a fan of the 3D effect. People tend to love it or hate it. I'm of the former and keep the slider turned all the way up. OoT employs the effect better than most 3DS games. It really brings the world to life. OoT is a great game on any system, but I love the 3DS remake.
It's a weekend of classics and handhelds for me. I'm still playing Super Mario 3D Allstars on Switch. On 3DS, I'm playing Ocarina of Time. On GBA, I'm playing Castlevania Aria of Sorrow.
This list doesn't much resemble my own, but it's fun seeing an amalgam of everyone else's favorites. I do enjoy these lists, Nintendo Life. They have a way of influencing my retro purchases.
For me, Rare's platformers deserve a higher place on the list. I love DK64. Mario 64 is my absolute favorite N64 game, closely followed by OoT.
I just ordered these in the US. I had exactly enough points, thankfully. It seems the only way for me to earn more points is to play Nintendo's mobile games. I'm not sure if I want to go that far.
I absolutely love the N64. For me, it was the most amazing generation for videogames. Everything about my favorite hobby dramatically changed. Games like Super Mario 64 and Zelda Ocarina of Time became the new standard for 3D games. This list really reminded me of how many 64 games I still need to add to my collection. The N64 was definitely missing RPGs and other prominent titles, but it's small library held so many timeless classics. I hope we see it's library added to NSO soon. Even so, my N64 will stay hooked up in my living room. There are too many great games that will probably never get an official rerelease.
Still playing 3D Allstars on Switch with 100 stars/shines in each game. On 3DS I'm playing OoT 3D for the millionth time, just because. At home I'm playing Galaxy 2 on my Wii U and Banjo Kazooie on my N64. I'll probably end up playing through Super Mario Bros 2 on my RetroUSB AVS, as well.
I love 3D platformers. I also love the aesthetics of N64 games, so at the cheap price of $2, I just went ahead and picked it up. I haven't played it yet, as I'm busy with 3D Allstars, but I'm glad to hear that others seem to like it. I really hope we get more indie games with N64 like graphics.
I imagine the Switch's hybrid model will be around for quite some time. That's not to say there won't be Switch hardware that does just one thing, like the lite. My hope for upcoming hardware is for Nintendo to include support for VR. As for purely portable hardware, I would like to see a clamshell design.
I'm definitely double dipping on this one. I've been waiting so long for Pikmin on Switch, I'm pretty excited to play through it again. I really hope Nintendo gets the message that fans want more Pikmin. I would happily buy ports/remasters of the first two as well. Don't let that GameCube/Wii emulator go to waste, Nintendo!
It seems inevitable that Nintendo will stick with the hybrid formula while it continues to be so massively popular. I, for one, couldn't go back to tethered consoles after being able to play anywhere. It's not just portability, but having the ability to play just like a tethered console when it's convenient. Switch is a wonderful idea and there are plenty of other ways Nintendo can still innovate. They just need a good incentive to upgrade without alienating current Switch owners who aren't ready. Letting everyone upgrade when they want to could only build a more loyal following. I already have a massive collection of Switch games. Much more than any other console I've owned at the end of it's lifecycle. It would be awesome to have that entire library available at the beginning of a new cycle. In that way, the Switch reminds me of the Gameboy. My biggest concern would be choosing which games to take with me when I go out. Personally, I'm ready to leave tethered gaming where it belongs. My retro collection.
I'm still playing 3D Allstars. I've got about 75 stars/shines in each game. I'll be playing each one until 100% completed. I'm also playing a little Mario 35. It's been a great little addition to NSO, so I'm going to enjoy it while it lasts.
I'll also play some Banjo Kazooie and Perfect Dark on my N64.
I'm having a blast with this game in between sessions of 3D Allstars. I really hope it sticks around after the end date. It's another great incentive for NSO.
It really is a great little game and I'm not even big into online games. NSO has always been about the retro titles for me, but the service is really shaping up to be a great value.
I can't wait for this one. It's the only Mario game that got multiplayer right. I played it to death with my wife and daughter on Wii U. My daughter moved out for college recently, so now we can play this gem online. I love all the SMB2 references.
Limited or not, it's an amazing collection of games. Each one is an absolute masterpiece. It's one of my favorite Switch releases. Hopefully, Nintendo will do something with these classics after the deadline. Perhaps put them on NSO or sell them individually.
This looks so much more exciting than the first Hyrule Warriors. The BotW prequel story just seems perfect for this sort of game. I'm really looking forward to playing it. I think I'll start a new game of BotW right after I finish it.
I've got about 50 stars/shines in each game on 3D Allstars. I'll be playing until I 100% each one, so I've got a ways to go. I've also been meaning to start a game of DKC2 on NSO.
I finally replaced my GameCube memory card, so I'll be starting a new town on the original Animal Crossing. I'll also play some Banjo Kazooie and Perfect Dark on my N64.
For myself, 3D Allstars is the best of the bunch. But, each game in the collection is a favorite. My second favorite collection would have to be Spyro. The first game in that collection is my favorite one. The second is good too, but I found Spyro 3 a little convoluted. Same with the Crash collection. I love my 3D platformers, though. The Switch has become the best console for 3D platformers since the N64.
The collection I would really like to see is a Metal Gear Solid collection. In my dream collection it would have Twin Snakes, Sons of Liberty, Snake Eater (with the 3DS enhancements) and Guns of the Patriots. I would settle for any MGS game now, though.
I had no idea that the sidekick allowed for bouncing off lava in 64. I didn't know about the homing ground pound in Galaxy either. That's one of the things I love about Mario. Even after years of playing an entry, there's still secrets to learn.
I really like the way the Oculus store is run. It's very similar to Steam. If you've played the game for less than 2 hours, you have 14 days to get a refund for any reason. It would be really nice if Nintendo relaxed their policy a little. More than that I would like to see user ratings and reviews on the eShop.
I missed it. I did all the missions too. God knows I don't need any more Super Mario stuff, but I can't help feeling like I missed out. I get kinda obsessive about this kind of thing when it comes to Nintendo. I have every Club Nintendo Platinum reward. Oh well. First world problems, am I right?
@Euler I know that, but there are still character specific stars that I didn't enjoy as much. I had to either exit the level and change characters or find the appropriate cap. I still love the game and 100% completed it more than once. I just like the original better.
@Snivy102 Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. We're merely talking about different tastes. I said in my comment that I love the DS game. It's rating eight great games. One of them has to be last. I choose the remake. I like the original better. I've played them both very recently. I played 64 DS on a small model DSi. I still think the original looks better. It's not a big deal. Relax.
Considering how the pandemic has affected Nintendo, we could just as easily have nothing from them right now. Instead, I have not one, but three great games. I've been playing all three non-stop since I got it and haven't noticed any real issues. The really good news is now there are official N64, GameCube and Wii emulators for Switch. I would guess those will be used for more than a limited collection. All three games in the collection and many more could be planned for NSO in the future.
@Snivy102 Wrong. Completely wrong, actually. I got Mario 64 DS at launch and just replayed it about a month ago. I love the game. It's just that I love the N64 original so much more. It's true that the controls are imprecise compared to the original, but that's not the only reason why I rank it lower than the rest. I also didn't really like playing with the other characters as much as Mario. The challenge has been dumbed down compared to the original. While the character models are improved, the environment and textures don't look as good. I personally like the original character models better anyway. Mario 64 is my all-time favorite game. I just think the remake is flawed compared to the original. I still think it's a great game, though. It's my most played DS game.
It's a shame so many are fixated on the negative with Allstars. It's the sort of collection I never expected from Nintendo. I never really thought Sunshine would ever receive a rerelease. Obviously, Covid-19 is affecting Nintendo greatly and Allstars was meant as nothing more than a stopgap until new games are ready. I'm sure I'll get as much entertainment out of these three masterpieces as I did from Odyssey, so I'm pretty happy. I assume that any bugs will be patched out eventually. At least this is so minor that it doesn't affect gameplay.
1) Super Mario 64
2) Super Mario Odyssey
3) Super Mario Sunshine
4) Super Mario Galaxy
5) Super Mario 3D Land
6) Super Mario Galaxy 2
7) Super Mario 3D World
8) Super Mario 64 DS
There really isn't a bad Mario game, so it all comes down to personal taste. I ultimately prefer the sandbox style over the linear style 3D games. I love every game on this list, though. 3D Mario is always my most anticipated games on Nintendo consoles, followed closely by Zelda and Metroid.
Who cares!? It's the size of a postage stamp and the only time I look at my Switch cartridges is when I'm choosing one to play. Is there no end to the complaints? If this is truly upsetting you, it may be time to change hobbies.
These are some of my all-time favorite games. Each of these games is why I still play Nintendo after 35 years. I think the complaints are overblown. I highly doubt this is the last time these games will be made available. This is just a limited collection. Let's see what Nintendo actually does after March before cursing them.
@aaronsullivan My short time trying emulators left me spending more time adjusting settings than playing the games. I'm just too obsessive to enjoy a game when I can tweak so much. I would agree that the main draw of this collection is being able to play three classic 3D platformers anywhere, without having to setup an emulator.
I still carry a small model New 3DS with me. It's a fantastic system with an awesome library. I love Super Stable 3D. It's one of my favorite features Nintendo has ever implemented.
These games look great compared to the original releases. I have HD adapters for the N64 and GameCube and a Wii U with the original versions of the games. I, for one, am happy they didn't do full remakes. Each game has its own charm and should be preserved. It seems they did just enough to give them an updated feel without changing what made the originals so special.
I'm really excited to finally get this on Friday. They're all amazing games. Just like the original Allstars, this will end up being one of my most played Switch games. I never tire of playing though these. Each game is like a virtual playground.
I have the famicom version micro sitting in my collection. It's a neat piece of Nintendo's history and a nice collector's item, but I don't use mine anymore. I have a backlit modded original model GBA for playing. The shell and buttons are brand new and it has a gorilla glass screen. It's a thing of beauty and plays my entire Gameboy collection.

I'll be downloading No More Heroes 1 & 2 and the physical version of Pikmin 3 is on its way. Not a bad week at all.

Relax.
Re: Video: The Problem With The Super Mario 3D All-Stars Release
Considering how the pandemic has affected Nintendo, we could just as easily have nothing from them right now. Instead, I have not one, but three great games. I've been playing all three non-stop since I got it and haven't noticed any real issues. The really good news is now there are official N64, GameCube and Wii emulators for Switch. I would guess those will be used for more than a limited collection. All three games in the collection and many more could be planned for NSO in the future.
Re: Feature: Every 3D Super Mario Game Ranked
Re: Random: Some 3D All-Stars Players Aren't Happy About The Visible Debug Cubes In Super Mario Sunshine
Re: Feature: Every 3D Super Mario Game Ranked
My personal ratings would be as follows:
1) Super Mario 64
2) Super Mario Odyssey
3) Super Mario Sunshine
4) Super Mario Galaxy
5) Super Mario 3D Land
6) Super Mario Galaxy 2
7) Super Mario 3D World
8) Super Mario 64 DS
There really isn't a bad Mario game, so it all comes down to personal taste. I ultimately prefer the sandbox style over the linear style 3D games. I love every game on this list, though. 3D Mario is always my most anticipated games on Nintendo consoles, followed closely by Zelda and Metroid.
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (September 19th)
Super Mario 3D Allstars, of course. I've got only about 5 stars/shines in each game. It's a lot of fun playing three of my favorite games in unison.
Re: Random: Super Mario 3D All-Stars' Cartridge Is Rubbing People Up The Wrong Way
Who cares!? It's the size of a postage stamp and the only time I look at my Switch cartridges is when I'm choosing one to play. Is there no end to the complaints? If this is truly upsetting you, it may be time to change hobbies.
Re: Poll: Super Mario 3D All-Stars Is Out Today On Switch, Are You Getting It?
These are some of my all-time favorite games. Each of these games is why I still play Nintendo after 35 years. I think the complaints are overblown. I highly doubt this is the last time these games will be made available. This is just a limited collection. Let's see what Nintendo actually does after March before cursing them.
Re: Video: Digital Foundry's Technical Analysis Of Super Mario 3D All-Stars
@aaronsullivan My short time trying emulators left me spending more time adjusting settings than playing the games. I'm just too obsessive to enjoy a game when I can tweak so much. I would agree that the main draw of this collection is being able to play three classic 3D platformers anywhere, without having to setup an emulator.
Re: Nintendo 3DS Production Has Officially Come To An End
I still carry a small model New 3DS with me. It's a fantastic system with an awesome library. I love Super Stable 3D. It's one of my favorite features Nintendo has ever implemented.
Re: Video: Super Mario 3D All-Stars Looks Miles Better Than The Originals, And Here's The Proof
Re: Review: Super Mario 3D All-Stars - Three Of Mario's Greatest Adventures Come To Switch
I'm really excited to finally get this on Friday. They're all amazing games. Just like the original Allstars, this will end up being one of my most played Switch games. I never tire of playing though these. Each game is like a virtual playground.
Re: Feature: All Hail The Game Boy Micro, The Sexiest And Most Impractical Game Boy Ever
