A new game from Yuji Naka and Naoto Ohshima, perhaps best known as the creators of one Sonic the Hedgehog, has been announced as part of the Xbox Games Showcase. Square Enix is bringing Balan Wonderworld to Switch and other consoles in next spring.
Described as a 3D action platforming game for 1-2 players, the trailer (above) evokes memories of 3D SEGA games like Nights Into Dreams on the Saturn, which both creators also worked on, and Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg on GameCube, which Yuji Naka produced.
Here are some details from the game's newly launched website followed by some screenshots:
BALAN WONDERWORLD is a wondrous action-platformer game themed around a mysterious musical theatre.
The stars of the show will use special abilities from a multitude of characterful costumes as they adventure in the bizarre and imaginary land of Wonderworld. Here memories and vistas from the real world mix with the things that people hold dear.
Twelve different tales await our stars in Wonderworld, each with their own unique quirks. They will explore all corners of these labyrinthine stages, using all the tricks and gimmicks hidden along the way, to get to the heart of each touching story.
The fact that the game was also making its way to Switch was confirmed on Twitter. There's also a video on the game's website with an introduction to the game from the creators:

I just saw this earlier, it looks pretty interesting. I want to see where they go with this.
Looks to be quite the ride, as far as I've seen in the trailer. I'm in, especially for the vibe.
I'm just hoping the Switch version doesn't become an "afterthought" in terms of performance...
Just saw the trailer earlier. The cute characters, the beautiful fantasy world, this looks like my kind of game. Very happy with this reveal.
Jump up, Superstar, hopefully this time they raised their bar...!
Yes it’s definitely got that sonic/nights feel.
This looks like the love child of nights and billy Hatcher (aesthetically) and I’m living for it .both games were incredibly fun
Naka is a brilliant programmer. His star has faded a bit since he left Sega, but I don't think he can be faulted for that (unless you want to criticize his decision to leave in the first place).
Getting major NiGHTS vibes from this one, though not in terms of gameplay. Hope it turns out well, because this looks like the kind of game I would LOVE to play.
@PBandSmelly They're not referring to Sonic Team when they say that. I don't think Sonic Team has any original members left.
This is definitely a follow up to Nights! Can't wait to play this, I miss games with this whimsical aesthetic.
Can't wait to try out those captu- I mean costumes. Yes, costumes. Cough.
(Come on though - the soundtrack especially sounds like it's been lifted straight from Mario Odyssey! And possibly other places before that.)
I saw this during the Microsoft event and was hoping it would come to switch. Definitely gonna be something I pick up
Nice to see 3D platformers making more of a return! I’m not really a fan of the player characters but I like the costumes and world design and it’s all very cohesive and nicely made from the trailer. Definitely keeping an eye on this!
It looks like a strange mash of ideas and inspirations with a fluctuating design appeal. If it controls extremely smoothly and tight throughout it could be something unique. But 3D platformers are very very easy to come up short with
This game looks so cute! Can’t wait to play it with my 6-year old bro.
I feel like this could've been shoved as yet another weird Sonic tie-in and flopped, but as it's own IP it stands a chance. I'm rooting for them both
It really does look good. Hopefully Naka still has his touch.
@Balladeer This feels like one giant platformer love letter. Floating orbs of water and costumes ala Mario Galaxy, doors per Rare's 3D platformers, globe-trotting train and a white top-hat character ala Odyssey, area-themed "warped/evil" arena bosses ala 3D Mario or A Hat in Time, Sonic-styled inhabitants and merch critters, NiGHTS-styled human MC's, what looks like some Billy Hatcher foundations for the physics of movement and basic character interactions...
And yet, I don't feel anything from the main 3 cast members. No interest. Are they unrelatable, too strangely-designed, bland, uninspired? I don't know which, and I can't tell which, because there's nothing hooking me into trying this out. Like a book with great and accessible writing throughout, but the otherwise colorful cover and first page of text are as generic as one can make it.
Found it hilarious that the people on the stream apparently excited for it kept calling it Wonderland. Idiots. 😂
@Crimson_Ridley That surely would have been a better name! Although a certain mouse would bring the hammer down on that. 🤣
I could not be anymore in than I am right now for this... I love 3D platformers and can't wait to try this out...
I could cry. Never expected something to hit my Billy Hatcher Nostalgia like this...
Super NiGHTS into Disneyland
This is like Mario galaxy/Odyssey mixed in with Disney all in one. I’m curious to see how this plays out.
It definitely has that "Sega Charm"!
@KingBowser86 yeah, I’m having the same reservations about the main characters. I think it’s the dead eyes which are the problem.
just take my money.
I sometimes wonder what would've happened if Yuji Naka had been the one to oversee Sonic's foray into 3D gaming. Maybe this game night provide some clues.
@Dr_Corndog the only thing that concerns me is Rodea the Sky Soldier on Wii/Wii U. Bought that on good faith due to his pedigree and found it super repetitive and poorly designed.
That said, this does look like a fun mix of NiGHTS and Billy Hatcher and I’ll never turn down a good 3D platformer, so I’m in
Wow, that definitely has that late 90s/Early 00s Sega energy.
I'm very much down for it! I'm just hoping it plays well. Nothing kills momentum and hype more than a platformer that's a pain to play through.
@jump Art style aside (which can go a lot of directions depending upon what fix is applied), I think it's the fact that they look like generic protagonists straight out of a Dragon Quest Builders game. And the hat-person's design is just too absurd to be excited for or shareable in real-life, let alone a design that a player would feel comfortable with in the "tour guide" trope. At least Lubba had a vague, in-the-trenches aura of leadership about him.
@MajorasLapdog in fairness to Naka/Prope, Rodea was a good game on Wii but the Kadodawa Games Wii U version was a mess. Fortunately Naka was not involved with that or the 3DS one either. The Wii game was 5 years old by the time they released it.
I'm definitely get those Saturn/Dreamcast Sega feels watching that trailer........Cannot wait!
This looks so much like NiGHTs... I’m speechless
NiGHTS vibes... by creators of Sonic? yeah that checks out
also who else wants Smash Spirits based on this game?
Did they do Rodea the sky soldier?
Overall looks very promising, but I too am not drawn to the design of the 'human' characters.
That’s gorgeous, possibly the prettiest 3D platformer I’ve seen! Mainly bumped up by the amazing colours and world design. Hopefully this’ll run well on Switch.
@Roam85 Just the Wii version, which was only available when you purchased the Inferior Wii U game, which they didn't make.
Very creative-looking and a wonderful soundtrack too. Definitely seems like a big love letter to all 90s 3D platformers, not just NIGHTS. Although I'm glad I'm not alone when I say that those humans look... off.
Perhaps a brief ouch up by the FF team would sort this out. Anyway, can't wait to see more from the guys that made Sonic great in the first place!
This looked very interesting, and of course Yuji Naka is a legend, but I always worry that the industry has moved on. Sometimes we're nostalgic for older developers, but find when they put out a game that's just as good as anything they've done in the past, it doesn't feel as good, because actually games have come a long way.
So are they doing this in lieu of a Sonic/Odyssey knock off, or
I just saw the trailer for this game today, I already love how it looks! Really wanna give this a shot, especially since I like 3D platformers and it's made by the same people who made Sonic.
Thought this was on Xbox only, LOL there goes another game i wont need to consider buying Xbone for. Looks great another title for switch.
Looks like a fun game. If it turns out to be good, it's the Switch port for me.
@Axelay71 Xbox will not have any exclusives for several years. Microsoft confirmed that. Said it's not to pressure players to get the new Gen.
So, is this one cartoonish game from Xbox presentation ?
(Saw released on Switch and other consoles)
Ooh, well... 😏
Not an Xbox exclusive so i think i will consider the Switch or PS4/PS5 version.
Everybody's making SEGA games except for SEGA. And I'm fine with it.
I never played Billy Hatcher. But NiGHTS immediately came to mind when I saw this trailer. At least aesthetics wise. Don't know if it shares any gameplay elements. But if it does and is just as awe inspiring as NiGHTS, I'm definitely on board. NiGHTS is one of my top 5 favorite games of all time
Don't know if the whole no exclusive approach for several years will work out. That means everything is found on another platform as well.
Wasn't his last title the failed Rodea the sky soldier? Anyway, this looks pretty promising. Please be good!
And of course big Nights vibes, but the Nights game on the Wii wasn't that good (and I haven't played the original).
Looks like Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg!
@Hagemaru I'm not expecting the Switch version to be on the same level as the other consoles, but just focused on enough so that the choices between platforms are equal to a degree.
I mean, just look at Mega Man 11 and how it manages to run just as good on Switch as it does on other platforms...
Looks like a mashup of Sonic, Nights and 3D Mario. The Host character has a cappy top hat and a Nights style body. The only thing I didn't like were the soulless avatar for the main characters. Coop will be interesting to find out more about.
It's like Sonic x NiGHTS x Billy Hatcher x Kingdom Hearts. The pedigree seems high so I wish it much success.
This game looks amazing! When I saw it at the Xbox show, I was really hoping for a switch version. (No ill will to Xbox fans of course, I just own a switch already.) I also am happy to see next gen games being ported to Switch. That bodes well for the platform's future.
The only minus here are the looks of the main characters. Generic to say the least, and considering this is a platformer/collectathon, that is quite an important aspect.
Other than that, I am getting this day one
Totally getting this. Can't wait
Getting some strong Nights vibes from this. I like it.
Does anyone else think this game looks really creepy? I feel like the weird guy in the hat is putting all this on to lure me in and lock me in a dungeon for, well... That's not appropriate to talk about here.
Colourful characters, nice looking worlds. I'm definitely intrigued.
@TheFox He's definitely locking us in. Just submit.
I'm very happy that 3D platformers have made a comeback this generation. This looks like another great addition to my growing collection of 3D platformers on Switch. I'm definitely getting some Nights and Billy Hatcher vibes, which is most welcome. Looks like a day one purchase to me. I just hope they take some time to properly optimize it for Switch.
@Zadaris Do you think this game has a safety word?
The music sounds straight up pulled from Odyssey's files.
i like the art and colors , very interesting
The initial character made me remember the character of NiGHTS man that would be such an awesome port to the Switch. But this is looking very promising.
"I want to make a new KNiGHTS game without calling it KNiGHTS."
Odyssey is that you?
Looks great, I see people bringing up Rodea, but you gotta remember Rodea was a Wii game from a small dev team that's not even around anymore. Compare that to SEGA or Square Enix, it's just not a fair comparison. It also doesn't help that the game released years after the Wii was out of commission.
Sonic and NiGHTS fans, i believe you have teary eyes after knowing this news!
What probably makes or breaks the game are the controls. Please no weird, super floaty controls where you bounce all over the place. Just give us some good, responsive controls.
This couldn't be more Yuji Naka. Lol. I see Billy Hatcher, bit of PSO, Nights into Dreams, and Sonic. Sonic Team were my favourite developer back in DC/GC era, so this does intrigue me.
Now that direct would have gone down a lot better if this had been in it!. You watch it and say well 2020 is still largely unknown. But it least we know spring 2021 is going to be amazing.
Weird but cool. I’ll probably get it.
Neil Gaiman's MirrorMask the videogame. Just me?
If this game sells well, that guy with the eyes in his hat is going to have an insanely huge fanbase, like sans.
