Back in March, 3D Realms lifted the lid on Wrath: Aeon of Ruin. It's a retro-inspired first-person shooter running on the Quake engine with various modern enhancements.
Although it's already been confirmed for the Switch, Digital Foundry's John Linneman has now shared some new information about the console ports. While the footage below is based on the PC build, the developer apparently confirmed at Gamescom that "they already have the game up and running at a locked 60fps" on Switch.
They had to sort of rearchitect the game in some interesting ways and find people that could do this. Sounds like it was quite a challenge, but the result is that you basically have this game running beautifully on the Switch hardware, supposedly. I still need to see it for myself to be sure.
It's good to hear a game like this is aiming for 60fps, given its fast and frantic nature. The title requires players to explore ancient crypts, sunken ruins, corrupted temples, and howling forests to kill everything in sight, and is due out early next year on the Switch. To get the full rundown, fast forward to the 9-minute mark in the video below:

I absolutely love classic style shooters like this and was wondering when we'd hear more on it. I'm still hoping we get DOOM 64 soon as well.
@Giygas_95 Fingers crossed we do get Doom 64, though I'm unsure if there are any licensing issues for that one, since it didn't already make it across with the others.
What do you think of Ion Fury? That game looks pretty awesome too! And I wouldn't say no to a Duke Nukem port on Switch
@Kintypoo121 I straight up just found out about Ion Fury and Dusk by looking at the comments of the video on this article. Supposedly they're both coming to Switch this year. I'm gonna check them out, but they showed Ion Fury in the video, and it looked really cool with a similar graphical style to classic DOOM.
@Giygas_95 It's a good time to be a classic FPS fan! Yeah I think Ion Fury will be coming out later this year on Switch, it's based on the Duke engine, but with some pretty enhancements. Exciting!! Dusk looks great too, though a bit more gritty, like Quake.
@Kintypoo121 I'm just suffering because I've got an enormous backlog and a ton of games coming in September and October that I'm interested in. Link's Awakening, Luigi's Mansion 3, Spyro Trilogy, Witcher 3, maybe Dragon Quest XI if I start liking the demo more, Fire Emblem Three Houses which I still haven't played (and I want to play the rest of the Fire Emblem and Dragon Quest games before playing Three Houses and DQXI...ugh).
And on top of that I've got life to take care of. I'm overextended. 😣
Looking great !
Still I hope also the Remastered BLOOD ( Nightdive Studios) makes an Switch/PS4/XO debut one day.
That's nice. Where's 'Amid Evil?' Been playing that on PC and having a blast. I heard a Switch port was incoming. Hopefully soon!
Yeah, I was really happy when I heard that in their video. This should be an incredibly good Switch release. I wonder if they'll have any kind of multiplayer?
@Giygas_95 Tell me about it! Too many good games out now and coming out over the next few months! Just finished Xenoblade 2 (amazing, by the way) and looking at that 10hr long DQ demo...I shouldn't...I really shouldn't XD Still not finished Zelda...ugh!
It's a great time to be a gamer, but a terrible time to be a responsible adult!
@Kintypoo121 Just finished Ion Fury. Absolutely fantastic game. Cant wait to replay it. Will definitely double dip on it for Switch. Same for Dusk. Ripped through that one 3 times now. I love OG-styled fps, when done right.
@PhilKenSebben Ooooh, that's great to hear! I saw Digital Foundry's video on Ion Fury and they were showering it with praise! Not-so-patiently holding off for the Switch version of both these games, but quite tempted to jump in now on PC.
Oh man! Wrath looks amazing! Can’t believe i’ve been sleeping on this game. Still hoping some other ones get on the Switch. I know Ion Fury is coming, and i’m very excited for that too, but theres so many classic fps games i’d still want to see on Switch.
Wolfenstein 3D
Final DOOM
DOOM 64
Duke Nukem 3D
Shadow Warrior
Blood: Fresh Supply
Quake
Quake 2
These would all be quite amazing!
It's awesome that the classic style FPS genre has so many cool new games coming from indie devs, kind of like how the 2D platformer was the "it" genre before that.
Let Doom 64 go guys. It's not coming. That game was developed and published by the defunct Midway.
The better question is, where the hell is Dusk? A game that was actually announced for the Switch.
@MotionMan This exactly, all you listed would be amazing on the Switch... Great to see you listed Blood, I haven't played that in ages....
Dusk, Amid Evil, Ion Fury, and Wrath: Aeon of Ruin are all day one purchases on Switch for me! Loving the retro fps revival we have going on! Hopefully we get a new Timesplitters game in the near future, I miss the virus game mode. Spent hours having a blast with family and friends!🙌🏼👏🏼
Damn this looks promising as HELL!
Blood: Fresh Supply would be awesome on Switch I purchased it on GOG when it released a few months ago. I never played the original in the late 90's I was to busy playing half-life.😂
It looks good but why can't it be locked to 30FPS #30Frames-Please
I want this. Quake 1 and 2 were my absolute fav. games back then!
@Fearful-Octopus I LOVED blood. Also got this on GOG.
Funny how the limitations from back then can nowadays be sold 1:1 as some kind of "art statement". Love it.
@Scollurio I completely agree it's amazing with limitations, and all these recent retro fps games grab my attention more than AAA fps games with an exception of Doom Eternal very hyped for it! Will Wrath: Aeon of Ruin have deathmatch?
@vio Unless you’ve got some inside information we don’t need to listen to you. Doom 64 forever!
What a time to be a fan of 90's era shooters and all of them coming to Switch 😀
@Mr_Muscle @Kintypoo121 @Vio Doom 64 was rated for PS4 and PC within the last month. Sounds to me like it's getting resurrected.
I somehow missed that this existed, but it looks great. As someone who grew up in the 80's/90's, this is right up my alley. I'll be keeping an eye on this one.
@link3710 Fingers crossed then! It's the one I didn't get to play, too busy on GoldenEye at the time, annoying my friends by choosing OddJob XD
@link3710 That rating was quickly removed. I don't think it is coming.
Ok, my bad guys. I am man enough to admit when I was being stupid and wrong, and I was obviously wrong about this one, but I am certainly glad I was wrong.
