Next month is an incredibly busy period for the Nintendo Switch. On top of releases such as Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age and The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, there are various other outstanding titles coming to the platform.
One of these is a port of Bandai Namco game, Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch. If you've been wondering how much room this one will take up on your Nintendo Switch, the North American eShop listing says it will require 5.7GB of free space. That's not bad compared to certain other releases in the same month and close to the same size as Link's Awakening (5.8GB).
In case you missed it, the Switch version of Level-5's magnificent JRPG has been handled by Engine Software, and of course, will feature all of the lovely animated cutscene sequences by Studio Ghibl.

Can't wait to pick this up.
Not a bad space hogger at all, in my humble opinion.
PoE, Ni no kuni and Switcher 3 are going to keep me busy for a while
😁
I’m not sure which one I’m more excited for: Ni no Kuni or Dragon Quest XI.
Can’t wait for this game. I’ve always wanted to play it back then on the PS3. Now I can play it.
Edit: I had to redo my comment. My first comment wasn’t good. So I fixed it.
See? It is perfectly possible to optimize 3rd party games so they aren't these giant 35GB monsters. Nintendo doesn't work magic with their games, they just know what they are doing. Apparently Bandai has figured it out too!
I like that PS4 and PC have big hard drives, but that beefy hard drive has led a lot of developers to put less and less effort into making their games use less space.
@SpicyBurrito16
Thanks for explaining in such thorough details. I would never have guessed in which order you were able to play them.
@Aneira
My grammar might be off right now because i’m pretty tired. I woke up really early. I need rest.
Again thank you Namco for actually making this a physical release. This and Tales of Vesperia were the only two games I missed last gen and now I'm glad they are on the Switch.
@retro_player_22 A great second half to be sure, though I found the first half of the year to be a bit light. Super Mario Maker 2, Cuphead, A Hat in Time, Yoshi's Crafted World, and Crash Team Racing are some other big titles this year, at least for me personally, which I couldn't help but notice were absent from your list.
@Not_Soos That's cause most of those I already beat or don't care about. Crash Team Racing I still play but I stopped playing when Activision introduced those microtransaction, I might get into Yoshi next year, same for Super Mario Maker 2. Like I mention before I'm not into creation game which is why I skipped on LittleBigPlanet, Terraria, and Minecraft so I may only get Super Mario Maker 2 only because my folks loves Mario games, I already beat Cuphead and is now awaiting the DLC and the physical release. I would had mention Mortal Kombat 11 but like Crash the microtransaction and season passed had me scratching my itch for now.
Hmm.... Suspiciously small, PS3 version took up 22GB. I hope they've not reduced the cutscene quality.
Not bad at all, but I’ll be getting the cartridge. Now that I’ve started the DQXI Demo and am enjoying it this may take a back seat to that. Link’s Awakening will come first, but getting all 3.
@Franz get both ifyou can. Both are amazing games! Both are top A+ rpg game
@retro_player_22 I thought you were summarizing the best of 2019 in general, but you were just listing what you anticipate playing, so I understand. Since Three Houses is already released, your list threw me a bit. I still greatly enjoy CTR and play it regularly--I honestly think it rivals MK8 DX in many aspects--so the microtransations don't completely ruin it for me. That being said, earning Nitro Points and Wumpa Coins is extremely tedious, and the game was somehow broken today where it wouldn't give me the final Nitro Points I needed to unlock something on the final day of the Grand Prix, which I've been working toward for days now. It's extremely infuriating just how buggy the game has gotten from post-release updates, and that is what frustrates me more than the existence of microtransations. The game is just way too buggy now, which is a real shame.
finally a new good non-pixilated "Metroid venia" type of game on the switch.
Already pre ordered Ni No Kuni, just not sure when I'll find the time. So many good games. Witcher 3 may need to wait till next year at this rate.
@Heavyarms55 I agree with that to some regard.
Witcher 3 on the Switch is roughly 2 times smaller in file size than PC and that does not worry me because I know why it is that much smaller.
Ni No Kuni for the Switch will roughly be a straight PS3 port and going from 21.74 GB (which is pretty normal for a PS3 game) to 5,7gb does worry me a little.
I could go for hours why such small file size on switch could be a bad sign (especially when looking at some Switch games that went TOO FAR with their file size compression)
But the same goes for talking about why the PS3 game is so big, I'll wait until the Switch version comes out, look up some high quality gameplay and compare it to the original I have laying over here and then decide if I get this version (I don't need the PC or PS4 remaster, the PS3 game still looks excellent thanks to the graphical art style used in the game, but being able to play on the go would be nice)
That seems really small, now I'm a bit concerned about the cut scene quality in particular, given that the PS3 original was 4 times the size
@carlos82 it worries me too, because if they compress it too much then the cutscenes, audio quality and loading times could get worse, and we have already seen a few Switch ports that went too far on that regard.
Like my previous comment, with a game like The Witcher 3 or Doom I know why the game is smaller so the smaller file size does not worry me, but from what I've read Ni No Kuni for the Switch will pretty much be a straight 720p max port (PS3 version is 720p).
I have heard some people saying that the PS3 game is so big because back then certain PS3 games that read stuff from the disc only, had better loading times with uncompressed files (which is true, that is why Rayman Legends on the PS4/PC has pretty much no loading times but the compressed Switch version has)
But those are rumors which I hope are true, because this game has such beautiful art, cutscenes and MUSIC that it would be a huge shame if they compressed it for the sake of smaller file size.
We'll see what happens, I have my trust in Bamco so I expect them to not screw this one up.
@aesz not at all, why be like that? If you don't find this information useful, it doesn't mean others don't.
I can't believe this launches in the sameel week as both Links Awakening and Dragon Quest!
I worried that it's to small, it's a lot smaller than the ps3 version.
Think I'll cancel pre-order till some reviews of out. That file size doesn't fill me with confidence
It's a game that I always wanted, and cursed my bad luck because it was a PS3-exclusive (you know, there is a Ni no Kuni on DS, but only in Japan), but releasing the same month as Dragon Quest XI and Link's Awakening, added to the fact that it's full price despite being neither a remake or a remaster, just a port, unfortunately makes me put a hold on this one and hopefully wait for a price drop on an occasional sale that might as well happen (I want it physical), not being a Nintendo distributed game.
@antdickens @aesz
I don't get it either. This is really important information for those considering a digital purchase. I was thinking that I would have to go physical on this, but the news that it is so small gives me options. Also... look at the other comments. This is around a quarter of the file size of the PS4 original. How? That is concerning in itself. Is it compressed to all hell? This is more than worthy of an article.
@Heavyarms55 To be fair, we are not getting the remastered version but only a port of the PS3-game, still a got game to get nonetheless.
@ktej75
Agree but it's worrying that's it's 4 times smaller than the ps3 version which has me worried it's compressed to hell l and they cut scenes will not look good
Next month will kill my wallet and my social life.
Catherine full body edition
Monster hunter world iceborne
Greedfall
Borderlands 3
Ni no kuni remastered
Dragon quest 11 S
Zelda Links awakening
Code Vein
And Astral Chain next week....
Maybe they used a more modern video compression format for the cutscenes that wasn't available on the PS3?
I put hundreds of hours into this masterpiece back on the PS3 so now I never need to do that again.
But look at it! On the Switch! ...
Why can't they make Grave of the Fireflies into a video game?
It’s amazing how small these port sizes are getting. Can’t wait to pick it up!
One for physical for me
I’ve never really tried out a proper JRPG but Studio Ghbli is a must for me.
This, Zelda, Snooker and Witcher make up an eclectic bit pricey end of the year for me...
Games on disk often repeated data. If level one and level two had the same textures they'd be repeated in both levels data. Otherwise the read head would have to move from level two to level one you read a texture from level one. With a cartridge there is no read head so each texture only need to be on the cartridge once and it will access just as fast from any level.
This is one I missed out on during it's original release. I really want to play it but I'm already buying so much in September that it's going to have to wait. Sometime between October and December I'll pick it up. There's just so much to enjoy on Switch. As a Nintendo gamer, I'm feeling quite spoiled.
one of my top favourite games of all time love Ni No Kuni Wrath of the White Witch
@Wavey84 yes. But it's good though because you can play on the go. Why not get both versions (that is if you can)
Every game mentioned in this article is a port of an old game 🙄
Will get on sale someday on Steam just to have both in my collection. Great RPG... but If I ever play DQ or Nino 1&2 again it will be in GOD mode with a MrAntiFun Trainer 😂
@Moroboshi876
I've preordered Ni No Kuni from Amazon US for $41 + change, about $8 off. Every little bit helps.
They also have DQ XI S for $49.99, $10 off.
@k8sMum I could get it for 44 € (I'm from Europe), but it's still a bit much for a simple port, but the most important thing here is I have a huge backlog, and this title isn't distributed by Nintendo, which means it wouldn't be strange to see it for less than 40 some day anyway. No rush. And let's not forget it comes out in an already packed month.
Don't know how this originally flew under my radar, it looks charming as hell..... Definately going to wait for performance reviews tho. Got way too excited for tales of vesperia and it didn't run so well. This looks 100x better which worries me.
One of the best video game endings ever. I do not have time to play this again but can't recommend it enough.
Torchlight 2
Astral Chain
Daemon X Machina
Zelda
Ni No Kuni
Northgard
Dragon Quest
This month I am gonna be so poor, so many pre-ordered games 😫😫😍
this is fishy as hell. the game was 21gb on the ps3 and now it' 5,7gb on switch? looks like they severely reduced the audio bitrate and visual quality. no way that game is 720p looking at the file size. and if it is, well the audio quality had one hell of a downgrade. i'll cancel my pre order and wait for that one.
Can’t wait for this game. Too much RPG goodness coming all at once
@carlos82 @suikoden @LOZ_Master95 Before y'all start worrying though, do realize that this game was originally a 200mb Nintendo DS game at one time which still looks impressive. I think the Switch will handle it just fine 😉😄
Definitely downloading it when its finally released on eshop looks amazing
Ni No Kuni, Zelda, the Witcher 3 & Dragon Quest, yikes
One here for Phys...
@retro_player_22 who cares about the ds game
I’m hoping this game gets a price drop for Black Friday on the US store
