Today is an absolutely glorious moment for Switch Online members – with Nintendo finally making SNES games available.
Provided you've got a paid subscription, you'll be able to head over the eShop and download this new library of classic games right away. Here's a tweet from the Nintendo of America Twitter account, revealing more titles will be added to the service in the future:
The multiplayer SNES offerings have been enhanced with online play, and all 20 launch games allow you to use the "Rewind" feature – meaning you can overcome even the most difficult of challenges.
There's a nice variety of games to kickstart the service, including classics like The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past and Super Mario Kart. To help you decide what you should play first, we've put together a handy guide featuring all 20 games currently available on the app.
Have you tried out SNES games on your Switch yet? Leave a comment below.

Umm, the shoulder buttons aren’t doing anything in Super Mario World for me. Shouldn’t they be spin jumping and helping me look up and down?
Edit: They are helping look further left and right
As much as I love the inclusion of SNES games to NSO, I feel like the legacy games should be a service unto itself. Nintendo doesn't seem to want to do much with the online part of it, so why not keep that free? I'm not much for online games, but as long as they keep offering their retro catalog, it's worth it to me. I hope we get N64 games someday.
This is really great, I had started to lose hope.
Sorting the games is so much easier than on the NES app. You can also remove the help buttons that are displayed during gameplay in the settings.
@DockEllisD yeah for sure A works to spin jump, but I’m used to holding y to run, b to jump and one of the shoulders to spin jump, so I never have to move my thumb over to x and a
I played a little bit of Stunt Race FX for the first time. Pretty fun game. It’s pretty cool that it’s on the NSO Service. Plus, I love the rewind feature.
Been waiting all day. Is it finally up?
@DockEllisD It must been from playing the game on GBA as Super Mario Advance 2.
Lots of great games here at launch but none of the ones I most want to see from the SNES library. Let's get Chrono Trigger, Earthbond, Final Fantasy, Mario RPG, Donkey Kong Country on there!
We'll probably get them eventually.
It’s been a great night for me in UK so far: Jumping between playing Super Mario Kart and Gears 5👍👍🐢🐢
@adh56 That and Mario maker.
@adh56 Gotta do the claw fingers. Thumb tip on Y, thumb knuckle on B, bent index finger on A. Sounds terrible but it’s the only way I play.
@jobvd yeah that too I’m sure haha
@invictus4000 its been up for over 3 hours
@Panopticon 👌
Kinda looks like that?
@adh56 were you playing the gba version of Super Mario World because that's how it's mapped there
Why do I work tonight?!?! Oh well, just gotta make it through the shift and then a whole week of SNES and Iceborne awaits.
@Reploid The button help is removable? You just made my day
@Reploid the nes app got the same options now
@Panopticon Why? X makes Mario run too.
@HammerKirby yeah thats definitely the last place I played it about 2 years ago. And I’m thinking Mario Maker 2 plays like that too
I thought "I'll quickly test one or two games". 4 hours later I remember I have work at 9 and its probably best to stop and go to bed...
Nintendo and its brilliant back catalogue!
Are there display options for adding CRT Scan Lines ?
Way better than the Genesis collection. Too bad that was super crap
At last SNES games on switch!
Lack of Donkey Kong Country has me worried.
I'll wait this out.
Just been playing online Super Mario Kart with a friend - hey Patrick if you’re on here. Had a blast. Brilliant!
Great, at last can replay my all time favorites game such as Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts, Zelda Link to the Pass, Demon's Crest and Super Metroid.
Nice that we got Breath of Fire, Kirby's Dream Land 3, Stunt Race FX, Brawl Brothers, and Demon's Crest this early with the service.
Already played some Mario kart and got my rear handed to me by @RedderRugfish. After that I played some super Metroid for about 30 min. Looking forward to a weekend of super Nintendo games and astral chain
All the snes staples are here— Mario, Mario kart, Zelda and Metroid. Everything else here is gravy. Nintendo has had an excellent year with tons of great games and some awesome Nintendo online content
Would it be so bad if they sold the games individually to non subscribers? Even Netflix has a service where you can buy DVDs so Nintendo selling these games a la carte shouldn't be too far out of left field.
I already 100% The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. Going to work on Super Mario World and Super Metroid next. But definitely will play the others too. Especially Star Fox, Super Mario Kart, Pilotwings, F-Zero, and others. Looking forward to the new additions too, as they come in monthly.
The most exciting thing about the SNES switch app is that they included a Japanese game. It gives me hope that they'll release Parodius and Super Famicom Wars in the West on this app! Oh, and this isn't Japanese, but I really hope they add Super Bomberman and Super Bomberman 2! Well, actually I think there are some Japanese SNES Bomberman games, so why not add those to the app too? Also, I hope we don't have to wait a year to get Gameboy Advance games! One system a year would mean it takes forever to get GameCube and Wii games! Also, I'd love it if they released a Gameboy online app with 30 Gameboy games to mess around with. And a Gameboy Color Switch app, and, and...
Demon Crest was one game I never played on the SNES. Glad I tried it out because it is awesome. Combines elements of so many different games of the era, but really forges its own identity as well.
I think I saw it in the video store, but my Mom wouldn’t let me get it because she thought it looked sort of evil. Now the boys all grown up and can play Doom and Demon Crest, past midnight as well. 😈
@NotTelevision Your mum was right.
@Creature Nintendo fully owns DKC, and they managed to get the rights for EarthBound for the Wii U, 3DS and SNES Classic Mini - I reckon it’ll arrive eventually.
Omg Nintendo is really pushing the new SNES controller by making sure the 8bitdo snes controllers doesn't connect.
I was wondering when this would release. Nice to see Nintendo making a proper SNES controller as well, I never liked 8bitdo.
@JayJ 8bitdo is really really close in quality to the Nintendo ones.
I'm hoping for more JRPGs to show up sooner rather than later. In the meantime, I'll complete Metroid and maybe breath of fire. And I'll fiddle around in mario, Zelda, and Yoshi.
@jobvd Seriously? That's tragic if I can't use it. Really good controller, although I'd likely get the official pad eventually anyway.
The DKC series is my most wanted in the SNES library. Hope those games turn up on the service sometime. As for the games already there, I'm looking forward to Super Mario World and Link to the Past. My upcoming long flight already looks entertaining.
They started the service with some heavy hitters, so I expect the drip to be "disappointing" from now on. Aside from Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy or Kirby Super Star I don't know what they can add. Contra and Castlevania are likely locked to the Konami collections and Mega Man has its own. Square will probably not be licensing as well, so there goes Chrono Trigger.
The subscription is finally worth it now they start adding more consoles.
I wish there were more filters since the graphics look so blocky and the CRT filter so aggresive to eyes
@BlackenedHalo Games are supposed to look blocky.
@Toshiro_Baloney Really. Although I got mine to work once. Other times it would keep throwing me back to the controller connect screen.
@jobvd well SNES games did not look block on CRT TVs
@BlackenedHalo yes they did. Pixels are clearly visible on those.
Is it the 60hrz version in uk??
Anybody else wish it was full screen? It’s still great to play these games but I thought they would at least utilise the whole screen?!
”Today is an absolutely glorious moment for Switch Online members – with Nintendo finally making SNES games available.”
‘Absolutely glorious’? Haha, aye, totally. Not.
Honestly, talk about exaggeration and sycophantic hyperbole.
I have the snes mini so got a few of these but the plus to play in handheld is pretty cool. Like star fox while my girlfriend is watching TV good stuff.
@jobvd I have no problems with it.. just spend a nice hour on supermario world with my sneslike 8bitdo
I was worried there. My 8BitDo SNES controller is my main controller after my joycons broke.
I played Super Metroid some. That bought back so many found memories.
@romanista docked?
@Bass_X0 does yours work?
I would like to calmly express my fullest joy and approval.
You know, to avoid simply screaming "YES!!!!!!" at full lungs and screeching like a banshee.
Does anyone else have a problem starting Breath of Fire ? Started a new game and got to options (text speed, audio, controlkeys) but i can't get passed it ! Start button does nothing and any other just cancels and goes back to startmenu.
@jobvd yup. Docked. (Maybe firmware update?)
@romanista So, Tried in docked and happy to report it works! Tried the 8bitdo adapter for gamecube controllers and that works too! Will try portable again later.
@Deathwalka It is full screen! There's 3 options: full screen (which is the default), pixel perfect (which runs in a window to match the original resolution) and CRT filter (which looks horribly, offensively bad to my eyes).
@adh56 I grew up playing Super Mario World, and X was always spin jump to me.
When Mario Maker 2 came out and I got it, I got so confused about that.
Well, I'd re-buy a load of snes games for the Switch if they ever stop them being subscription-exclusive.
@Bunkerneath I grew up with it too, probably my favorite game of all time, but I’ve played it in every form is been released since.
@ktej75
Back out of that options window and you should be able to start the game.
Gonna be good playing these. One hand on my girl one hand on my. Old skool games oh yeah 🖐️😉👵
its aboput time also i hope they add dk country's and Mario RPG soon
Possibly stupid question: as someone who is considering getting online now that SNES titles FINALLY are available, can you play the SNES games when you are offline? Or do you need to be actively connected to the internet to play?
If the former (desperately hope that to be true), is it like a rental service where you pull down certain games at a time while you’re online?
I am sure there is an NL article that explains this, but I thought I’d ask here (apologies for being an inept researcher and the long post). Thanks in advance for any answers.
Finally completed Super Mario World for the first time ever! Just need to beat Metroid and ALTTP now!
@rdm22 They work fine offline once you've dowloaded the app. I just played on the way to work this morning on the train.
Since access to the games is part of the Nintendo Online service, I assume there is some way of tying access to whether your NO subscription is active. Maybe it periodically does connect to check that your subscription is active.
@bilboa thank you very much — good to hear (and that’s exactly how I’d want to use it, ha)
@gopher1369 huh how? There was nothing in options? Could you tell me how you get it full screen?
@gopher1369 I found it thanks so much dude appreciated!
@gopher1369 sorry I meant full screen in mobile mode undocked, I changed it but it still does not take up the whole screen 😔
what is rewind feature ? why make the games easy ?
@jobvd It’s not just about running, it’s about being as efficient as possible with running/jumping/spin jumping or launching off Yoshi, or maintaining run speed while flying.
@Panopticon Sure. That's why using your thumb for all 4 face buttons is the best.
@Deathwalka Yeah you're right, even in full screen mode, still has black borders at the top and bottom. Annoying!
@gopher1369 definitely annoying! I don’t understand the reasoning behind it? Why would it now take up the full real estate of the switch!
@jobvd good to hear.. nothing like enjoying a snes games with a snes like dpad!
@rdm22
The expiration token of the NES and SNES apps is one week. It renews every time you are online with the system. If you are offline for more than a week, you can't play any NES or SNES games until you're online again.
@dres Thanks! I figured it was something like that, but didn't know how frequently it needed to go online.
@rdm22 To answer your other question, it's not like a rental service for specific games, more like a subscription to the whole library of games. As long as your Nintendo Online subscription is active, you have access to all the NES and SNES titles at any time.
@bilboa @dres thank you to you both. Very helpful (and kind to respond to my long post!).
@jobvd No it's not. If you let go of the run button, you lose all momentum; let go of the jump button, you don't jump as high as you could. My thumb can't cover Y, B, and A all at the same time.
@Panopticon That's why you should use y and x both as a single button.
