Re: Opinion: Animal Crossing On Switch 2 Has Me Equal Parts Buzzing And Baffled

Hams96

I'm not entirely surprised that they've released this update - New Leaf got its Welcome Amiibo update out of nowhere 4 years after the game launched, there's a longer gap here but I also don't think this rules out a new Animal Crossing coming in the next few years. That being said, I'm not entirely sure where a new main series title could go that hasn't already been covered, it would need to be sufficiently different to New Horizons to justify people buying it after all.

I could see some spinoffs in the horizon though as they'd provide a different offering. Amiibo Festival 2 anyone?

Re: Poll: Is It About Time Game Freak Added Voice Acting To Pokémon?

Hams96

Sword and Shield would have benefited from it. Piers literally sings in cutscenes, but we get a brief mic squeal and then silence. At best it leaves the games feeling lacking, at worst it ruins any sense of immersion.

I think something like what BotW/TotK did (full voice acted cutscenes, grunting everywhere else) would be perfect. They've even done this before in Pokemon spinoffs (New Pokemon Snap for example)

Re: Nintendo's Official Camera "Attach Rate" With Switch 2 Revealed For US

Hams96

If they make the camera usable when playing with friends in games like animal crossing, I could see there being a bit more uptake. New Horizons with a video chat feature would have been absolutely fantastic during the pandemic (or in any other situation where you live far away from people and are using animal crossing as a surrogate for socialising irl).

Plus, just think how much money Nintendo could make from selling gyroid cameras

Re: Poll: So, Will You Be Getting Donkey Kong Bananza For Switch 2?

Hams96

For me it's definitely a matter of when, not if. It looks like a ton of fun and I'm really excited at the thought of playing it.
What I don't understand however is why there's no console bundles for the game yet. I've not got a switch 2 yet, but would have already pre-ordered if there was a bundle option already available

Re: Opinion: My Daughter Made Me Realise That Mario Wonder's Difficulty Options Need Work

Hams96

I always thought mario wonder restricting certain characters to easy mode was an odd choice, but for the opposite reason... I don't have kids but I just wanna play as Yoshi on normal difficult haha

Reading this article though, it really does feel like a decision that probably felt like it made perfect sense when it was made, but then as soon as someone this problem then it feels blinding obvious, of course small kids will want to play their favourite characters and then get upset/lose interest when they have a hard time.

Re: Poll: Are You Ready To Move On From The Switch?

Hams96

I feel that the switch still does more or less what I want it to. Maybe not as graphically powerful as I'd like it to be at this stage, but if Nintendo decided to keep releasing Zelda/Metroid/Xenoblade games on it for another 5 years, I would be quite content to continue snatching them up as soon as they launch.

That being said, I'm still excited for a new console. But probably wouldn't buy it until there's a title I desperately want. Between switch/PC/old games that I've been meaning to replay for years, I have enough games to happily tide me over until this happens.

Re: Talking Point: Would You Buy A Digital-Only 'Switch 2'?

Hams96

With the exception of a few specific titles, I've got almost all of my switch games physically. The first party titles almost never go down in price digitally enough to justify going digital on them. Feels like a far cry from the 3DS/Wii u era, when the Selects range, combined with the occasional My Nintendo discount, meant you could download some evergreen titles for very reasonable prices

Re: Poll: What Did You Think Of Today's Nintendo Direct?

Hams96

A decent direct, the highlights for me were definitely Super Mario RPG, Super Mario Wonder, and Metal Gear Solid Collection. Definitely a loooot of ports though... only a matter of time until a new console is announced at this point I think.
It's now 6(!) years since Metroid Prime 4 was announced. Guessing it's either cancelled or delayed to become a launch title for the Switch's successor at this stage?

Re: Pokémon GO Developer Says Reports Of Monthly Earnings At Five-Year Low Are "Incorrect"

Hams96

I recently got back into playing due to moving to a new city, it's a good excuse to explore a little bit.
As others have said, it's a pity that they haven't acknowledged the backlash against limiting remote raids. I almost exclusively did raids this way in the past and, as not many people played locally, most of my in-game friends are in other countries, so this was the only way I ever got a lot of the legendaries

Re: Super Mario Run Now Allows You To Play "One Stage For Free Each Day"

Hams96

I bought this using free Google Play credit years back, the main game was actually surprisingly decent so I put a fair amount of time into it. I'd say the price is pretty reasonable for what you get.

My main issue was that it was quite grindy to unlock new characters/kingdom cosmetics. Which would be fine if there was a good variety in stages in the tour/remix modes, but you basically get half a dozen stage types on a loop. Ended up giving up on unlocking Red Yoshi/Daisy.

Re: Star Fox Character Designer Wants Nintendo To Port The Wii U Entry To Switch

Hams96

Ah Star Fox Zero... I tried to love it when it first came out, and there genuinely were some wonderful moments in it, but ultimately the controls made it one of the most frustrating games I've ever played. I ended up giving up and getting rid of it, but would love to give it a second chance if they ported it and made the controls usable. That being said, I don't think I could justify paying full retail price for it after experiencing it on the Wii u, and imagine its bad rep at this point would probably make Nintendo very cautious about investing money in porting it.

Re: Feature: 5 Accessibility Features That Every Game Should Have

Hams96

The ability to adjust the text size is something that doesn't seem to be included in many games, but I feel it would make a massive difference to a lot of people.
I've come across quite a few games where the text size looks fine in handheld mode, but viewing from a distance on TV mode is difficult unless you're pretty close. I've found Resident Evil games to be especially bad for this

Re: Soapbox: Two Ace Attorneys Are Trapped On 3DS eShop, So It's About Time For A New Trilogy

Hams96

All 3 are absolutely worthy of a remaster. Given how the original trilogy is at this port available on just about everything, it continues to baffle me how the latter 3 games only ever got mobile ports.
On a side note, Phoenix Wright v Proffessor Layton is on my to-buy list before the eshop goes down. I've been looking out for it for years, but physical versions go for silly money

Re: Video: Are 2D Games Worth $60? Jon, Alex And Zion Share Their Own Thoughts

Hams96

I tend to regard games as being very good value if it works out at about £1 for every hour I play, so if I'm paying £60 I'd hope for around £60 of playtime (over a lifetime of owning it, not necessarily 1 playthrough).
That being said, if the game is shorter than that, but of a higher quality (i.e. more memorable/enjoyable than average), then I'd say that adds value to it as well.
The style of the game doesn't really matter beyond this I guess, as long as the consumer feels they're getting out at least as much as they put in then I'd say the price is justified

Re: Talking Point: amiibo Have Always Been Physical DLC, Skyward Sword HD Is No Different

Hams96

I've no problem with amiibo functionally providing dlc. As long as that's providing something that's nice to have but not having it doesn't otherwise impact the game, like a skin, or some bonus items or something.

What I DO have a problem with is locking QoL updates, or entire game modes (remember Metroid 2 or Xenoblade Chronicles 3D both locked in game soundtracks/art galleries behind amiibo. These are things that could significantly improve upon the game experience. Plus, given they're usually locked behind game exclusive amiibo with VERY limited production runs, it quickly becomes almost impossible to find them for a reasonable price if you don't get it at launch

Re: Soapbox: Game Genres Are Broken

Hams96

Think having a picture of Steam tags in the article perfectly sums up the issue. But then, I'd also argue that general game & theme genres (such as "platformer", or "horror") can be used interchangeably with more specific labels like "Metroidvania" or "4x", depending largely on the audience you're talking to. For example, I would tell my brother, who also plays games, that Shantae is a Metroidvania, but I'd tell my mother it's an action platformer.

Re: Video: Check Out This Side-By-Side Comparison Of Pokémon Diamond And Pearl On Switch And DS

Hams96

Seeing them side by side, the overworld itself looks very pretty (the valley windworks in particular stands out, the turbines really look like they tower upwards now, and the shadows look nice compared to the original too). Adding snow to the roof of the Snowpoint City pokemon centre is a nice touch too, there's clearly little tweaks here and there that give the world a little more sparkle than the original.

The character models in comparison, look jarringly bad. idk quite what it is, whether it's badly proportioned or just overly basic designs, but they just don't look good, especially when the camera pans to a different angle (although maybe that's just me being used to seeing the top-down viewpoint of the originals?)
