Cute and cuddly kart racer Chocobo GP looks like the bright spring sunshine we all need in our lives at the moment. And on the surface, it's a fun little racer where chocobos race in roller skates, and Vivi from Final Fantasy IX can set you on fire while driving around Alexandria. What's not to like?
But, back when Square Enix was marketing the game, it revealed a season pass in a Japanese Nintendo Direct, which left a sour taste in many fans' mouths. Not only that, the iconic Final Fantasy VII protagonist Cloud Strife is tied to this pass, called a Prize Pass.
Now that the full game is out, and players have had a chance to go chocobo racing, many have called out Square Enix. Upon logging into the game, players are greeted with messages promoting in-game currencies and microtransactions, including the aforementioned season pass.
What's more, if you're not willing to shell out your real-life gil to get the currency you need to buy characters and the Prize Pass, you'll have to play the game and grind for levels and currency, such as Myrthil. Squall Leonhart, of Final Fantasy VIII fame, is also purchasable with mythril but costs 3000 shards of the shiny ore.
Fans have expressed concern about the length of time it will take to gain levels in-game. Square Enix has responded by giving players 500 mythril and promised racers that it has adjusted the prize level settings to make them "more forgiving".
This isn't the only aspect of the game that players have highlighted as an issue. Every few months will be a different "season" in Chocobo GP (like a racing season), with season one underway right now. And, as a bonus for logging in during season one, players will get 800 mythril for free. That's enough to buy a Prize Pass.
That all sounds pretty good, like a gold chocobo, but with a bit of extra digging, fans have discovered that this free mythril has an expiration date of 31st August 2022.
Fortunately, any mythril (or other currency) that you pay for won't expire, but it's not often that video games take away free currency. 1000 shards of mythril will set you back $9.99, with a pack of 8200 mythril (plus a bonus 3200 bag), costing $81.99.
Square Enix has yet to respond on the free currency issues and has said it will clarify the changes to the level grinding as soon as possible.
While we couldn't access the Prize Pass during the review period, we still mentioned it as a negative in our write-up of Chocobo GP, which we otherwise called "A delightful surprise".
Have you picked up the game yet, or are you trying out the Lite version? How do you feel about the Prize Pass? Let us know in the comments.

Toxic microtransactions like this shouldn't exist in the first place if it's a $50 game.
If the Mario Kart DLC didn't kill this already, this definitely does. I'll be staying well away from this game. Why is it apparently so difficult to make a fun arcadey kart racing game with beloved characters?
The Disney game is next, but it's at the very least free to play.
I was going to try the Lite version, but I don't think I'll bother anymore.
Looks like a hard pass from me then, especially after playing babylons fall and marvel avengers, I won't invest in any more live service games from square enix especially those that are full price games already
I’ll stick to Mario Kart then and get the DLC.
This, cloud Kingdom Hearts, and so on make me wonder if Square does this knowing people will hate this.
I can understand DLC passes that add extra characters and tracks. But to include microtransactions in a $50 game that makes it feel like you don't have everything and need to spend extra money to get extras that should be included in the game is absolute garbage. In game currency should only exist in free to play games, but I'm shelling out $50 just to play it and Square Enix has the ignorance to beg me for more money to play as cloud or get other characters then I won't buy it all. Amazing how game companies and just companies in general are so out of touch and hate their consumers.
Honestly, I saw all this and uninstalled the game from my Switch. No thank you.
The MK8 Deluxe DLC couldn't have been timed much better. Announced the same day as Chocobo GP's horrible monetization and the first wave of the MK8 Deluxe DLC launches only 8 days after Chocobo GP launch.
Premium currency that expires, now THAT'S a first.
My god! Its a friggin Kart game!!! This whole fisco is almost as bad as the SW Battlefront II mess up when it was originally released. I don't know what the hell is wrong with SquareEnix but it's been really going downhill for the last few years. Jesus....
Square used to be one of the greatest game giants on earth. I guess all the fame and fortune corrupted them because with how they made kingdom hearts a cloud based game only on switch and now this Chocobo disaster, who can like or trust them anymore? I’m not buying anything from them unless it’s a full, complete game, sold as a game cartridge.
Ctr was one payment with all characters unlockable through gameplay & a bunch of extra tracks , karts & characters in free updates
Mario Kart DLC 1 week from today. Enough said......... and if you did purchase this game, get a refund (or don't purchase the extras) and by doing so, you'll be sending a message to these money grabbing ......ds!! PS Rant over, back to being happy as the Cowabunga Collection is coming out this year!! YEH!!
Other than wanting Live A Live, I stay far, far away from anything related to Square. Such a shady, greedy company.
All aspects of the game need changing, not just their approach to battle passes and mtx. Just about everything in this game screams of low quality, low effort, low budget. I was planning on pre-ordering this one as I'm a big SE and FF fan, but I'm glad I tried the lite version first and found how badly put together this game is.
This is the worst Microtransactions riddled game in living memory. Do not buy this game, avoid like the plague. That is all.
I was tempted to give it a try even owning 3 card racers already (MK8D [great], CTR [awesome], Sonic Team Racing [mediocore]). And as a chocobo and FF fan I think it’s sad that square is so greedy
@EVIL-C I tried Triangle Strategy last night. It's well done. Good music, good mechanics, and well thought out. It's almost as if SE has a few divisions within them, some putting out excellence while others are tasked with quick budget games like Choco GP
Live service games, folks.
@karatekid1612 Sadly that is not possible for me as I purchased it digitally and this is why I implore anyone to avoid this game.
Was on my Day 1 list until I saw the battle pass. That was my first red flag.
Then MK8DX new tracks appear, solid buy for me and this was sent to the maybe one day list.
I really wanted to give this a chance so I tried the lite version.
Please avoid like the plague, it feels just like a mobile game with annoying micro transactions advertisement, very limited and the cart and character physics are not good. Drifting sucks and the Tracks feel like a bad copy of Mario Kart down to the colors and feel of them.
Do yourself a favor, pick MK8DX and the new tracks and let a square know with your money how bad this game was.
And I’m a hard core FF game fan, I really wanted to love this.
I downloaded the lite version to give it a try. Will be deleting it without playing.
Looking forward to the mario kart DLC. Off to try F-Zero X now.
Square used to be the Returners. Now they are the Empire.
@RubyCarbuncle sorry to hear that!! It makes me mad how companies can charge full price for a game then do this to you and others. Somebody made a good point earlier when they put it would be understandable if it was a free to play. Bring back the good old days when you paid a sensible price for a full game!!
@TKundNobody Is awesome better than great?
Either make the game free-to-start, or remove these nonsensical microtransactions.
Pick one.
It's not like they're an indie studio strapped for cash.
@karatekid1612 Agreed. I wasn't going to but I'm going to buy the Mario Kart 8 DLC now. This game is just pure garbage.
Let's be honest. Anyone who watched the Direct saw this coming...
...except free premium currency that expires. What the hell?
@RubyCarbuncle Sounds like a better idea than purchasing this extra crap and maybe see on the new tracks next Friday?
@Dramlin That's surely possible. I liked the Octopath demo but not enough to purchase it.
Released in the same week as F-Zero on the N64 and Mario Kart dlc. Genius.
i hate that NintendoLife did not score it by 2 points lower at least for the microtransactions
watching as they actually kill this game LOL, guess what enix, your not the only kart racer out there!
@iLikeUrAttitude I don't really like the BP thing, but damn could they at least make it free if you buy the game? Games like fall guys don't ask you to spend a thing once you buy it, and its so much cheaper!
First time seeing expiring premium currency in a game that isn't Japanese exclusive.
While it's not common, it's not unheard of in Japan - even Nintendo's done it before, with Band Brothers P (Jam with the Band).
That said, I guess they didn't anticipate (or alternatively, didn't care) how it would be taken elsewhere.
Sounds like a smartphone game with an upfront £50 price in addition to the usual "give me your money now!" every few minutes. What's that you say? Play Mario Kart instead? Don't mind if I do.
As so many of you guys have said before, i was gonna give this one a try, not anymore.
Sometimes this companies made it real easy some decision
Man, not only you don't grant at least the first pass for free with purchasers of the game wholesale, and you make extremely difficult goal posts to even reach without excessive time spent on it, AND you go full-mobile and make your free rewards expire, you have the audacity to respond with what is only pennies that STILL have a shelf life?
$^%&-ing wow.
@TryToBeHopeful I hope so. English isn’t my mother tongue.
The games are in order in which I bought them
As I said before. Game is trash and deserves the criticism. Shame because it could've been great.
sounds like a hard pass for me,. For the same price as that dlc, I can finally get round to buying MK8 and play with my friends who all have the game already
@Dramlin I literally just finished The Turing Test this morning, which is Square Enix Collective, and it was great. So, yeah, each individual game needs to be given its own space. IT certainly looks like, though, Square is looking to monetize their main games as much as possible.
If a game forces me to continuously grind or miss out on content, I'll pass, real money transactions or not. The rest just makes this one extra bad.
How is this any different than what Crash Team Racing did? Not trying to provoke, I am genuinely wondering.
Oh my god square Enix what is wrong with you!?!
Free freaking premium currency that EXPIRES?!?
That’s beyond scummy! Either make it F2P or get rid of the IAP’s and make the battle passes be like the events in CTR! What a embarrassment. 🤦🏼♂️
No thanks. This is shameful. If they are going to treat us like mobile phone users istead of gamers, I'll treat them like a mobile phone company...which I avoid like the plague. Grrrr!
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe DLC looks like an even better deal when racing games like Chocobo and Gran Turismo 7 have recently launched with really shady microtransactions nonsense.
Zero problems with microtransactions on this game. (Psst! No one's forcing you to buy them.) But pushing them in the game as hard as they appear to be is a bit obnoxious.
@Dramlin Exactly. I have been following this rule with Square-Enix: If it isn't a JRPG, don't bother with it.
I was gonna download the lite but not now this whole thing is structured like a mobile game which would be fine if the game was free in the first place no thanks square you can join my list just like Ubisoft and EA this is bad practice
Yeah I played the game and even ignoring the whole prospect of season passes being terrible, the way it is now is just completely inhuman. I unlocked the season pass with the "free" mythril I got when I launched the game, I played through the story mode twice (because reasons) and did 5 total Chocobo GP races (one of which I won even) and all that playtime cultimated to me my season pass being level 6 out of 60 which is required for unlocking Cloud. That's abysmal. So offline modes don't give you any points towards it and Chocobo GP mode gives you chump change, there's also Squall who I can see myself getting into a point where I could potentially unlocking if I keep playing this for a few more days but then there's his custom cars (of which there are multiple) which cost like triple the amount the actual character costs... it's completely and utterly insane. Crash Team Racing remake had the online shop and while it was still stupid that it was even a thing, at least I felt you could unlock stuff in a far more reasonable amount of time in that one and could obtain "some" points while playing single player.
I also checked out the pay with money side and as expected the pay values are lied out in an incredibly confusing manner, pay X and you get X+X35! It's very predatory and a stain on an otherwise decent Kart Racing game, and when it's a game that's much aimed at young kids as well, it's doubly scummy.
In addition to the existing complaints, there are character costumes (like cute white mage / black mage outfits for Chocobo + others) that ALSO cost the premium currency AND expire in 10 days. Even getting alternate skins for existing characters costs extra money and they create scarcity by making them expire very soon. Very very scummy. This content should be unlockable in-game. Very disappointed in square enix and how they were NOT upfront about you not having access to all content in the game. They are treating this like a mobile free to play game but it ALSO costs $50. ugh
I tried the lite version and I don't think I've ever gone from excited about a new kart racer to absolutely zero interest so fast. The overwhelming amount of BS that pops up at you on the main menu (currency, events, whatever else) was almost as bad as the music that was playing and the pointless and poorly designed tutorial was really something. Thanks for saving me some money, I guess.
@MatoFilipovic CTR had pretty much everything from the PS1 game & the Nitro Kart/new tracks unlockable without needing to grind/buy currency, and (from what I can tell), was considered a more polished game overall. No making characters from the PS1 game locked behind the Season Pass like how Square's doing with Cloud & Squall (at the time of this writing), for example.
Sounds like the same monetization geniuses that worked on Avengers worked on this. I would have thought after the failure of Avengers they might have learned their lesson. This is also like the 5th flop for Square-Enix in the last year or so. When will they just go away?
This stinks 😷 and I have tried the demo and the game really just is not that good imo , Mario kart 8 will remain my top kart racer.
Yeah sorry, but stuff like that has no place in a full price game.
SE's recent obsession with live service games has resulted in some of the most overpriced atrocities on the market.
Utter garbage.
@Yorumi "If SE doesn't course correct soon they're going to be the next EA."
You say that like it's a bad thing -which for us it is - but it's probably Squenix goal, to be the EA of Japan. 🤑
For those who like pics better than reading.
Oh, I would also like to add that the matchmaking sucks. Honestly I doubt there is any matchmaking at all, not region, not skill, not anything. I played 1 race yesterday morning, that was more than enough to know not to bother. 8 out of 8th, by a lot. Pretty sure the cart in the pic behind me is lapping me. 😝
I do not want microtransactions in even one singular full priced video game. Not one. They shouldn't be there. Ever.
I don't even have an opinion beyond that, but I have no leeway for this. While I won't say I'd boycott literally any full priced game with microtransactions...I sure haven't bought any either. The amount of money that has ever gone to a game like that is literally zero dollars and zero cents.
So sadly the fact that Mario Kart is going to murder this game is for the best, the same way that Platinum falling on their faces with Babylon's Fall, is for the best. I wish it didn't come to that, but here we are.
@Yorumi There are probably 41 million people still buying games from EA, the worst company in America. Or at least a large crossover. 😂
https://www.sanjuandailystar.com/post/41-million-americans-are-qanon-believers-survey-finds
@DM7Dust If I remember correctly CTR used Wumpa Fruit as currency for their season passes, and it required grinding to unlock bonuses like new characters and costumes. However, those characters would become available later for free.
Maybe they will do something similar here, make those characters available at a later date for free.
Now, it has been a while since I played CTR so I might be remembering all this wrongly.
@rjejr
Gosh...!
$ 82 for getting more 8200 Mythrill was beyond greedy than EA. 🥺
It hurt my feelings as used to be SquareEnix (Squaresoft) was a great developer. But to see they used micro transaftions like this, i bet their financial situation was like in crisis and they need a quick cash to cover their financial.
Squaresoft was almost bankrupt for making FF Spirit Within, get merged by Enix and became SquareEnix to get second chance but they messed up with their game projects. The only good thing from their contribution for Switch was releasing World of Final Fantasy MAXIMA, FF X/X-2 HD, FF XII TZA, FF VII + FF VIII, FF IX on Switch with all games inside the cartridge.
They really messed up with Chocobo GP for a reboot of Chocobo Racing that peoples waiting so long with stupid micro transactions.
@Anti-Matter Hey did you get an email from a crazed Pushsquare forum? I didn't recognize any of the other names but 1 looked like you. It's gone now, if you didn't get it consider yourself lucky.
And yeah, forgot about that movie, saw it in theaters, it was good. Squaresoft was my favorite company by far back then. I started gaming every day w/ Parasite Eve on PS1 - not a game for you - and then FF7. And they had so many other great games. And then Sony said to them - we're making the PS2 Emotion Engine, make a game that looks really good but only lasts 20 minutes. And from then on all of their games have looked really good but not played very well. And then they discovered online games w/ FF11. Squaresoft is still probably my favorite video game company of all time, but not Square Enix, different company.
The game has great sound and art but between the price plus season pass and the fact it doesn't control as well as MK8, I decided against buying Chocobo even though I originally wanted it. I even deleted the free version.
While I'm not trying to excuse the microtransactions, this article is flat-out wrong in some regards. Squall costs 3,000 gil, not 3,000 mythril. Mythril is the paid currency, gil can be earned for free.
A worthy Mario Kart competitor my rear end.
Ah, so THAT'S why it got so many negative reviews. It's one of THOSE games...
@vicviper001 Not gonna lie, it's a very good reason to eviscerate a game. Greed must be punished.
can someone please explain to me what is specifically offensive about free currency that expires?
i feel like im missing something.
i first thought the article was saying that paid for currency expires, which is a very offensive idea to me. i totally get that.
also, im generally offended by micro transactions and just the general trashware aesthetic they've gone with, here.
but, if its something that was given for free, isn't that usually assumed to be equally revokable?
is it because the free money was in apology?
serious question, not playing dumb or trying to say it isn't as offensive as people are saying. thanks!
ps - i was entirely onboard with this game until reading this article. i will definitely never pay for it now. ever.
@-wc- I don't think that is what the article is focusing on specifically. The microtransactions in themselves in a boxed retail title are bad enough on their own and completely unacceptable. I totally agree that there's nothing wrong with taking back free currency, but all those freemium currencies are nonsense to begin with. I don't play games that feature them.
Rather play the updated MK8D. This looks like another trap.
@Troll_Decimator
ok, well thats about where im at, too. thanks!
maybe low sales will be swift justice, but i wont count on them learning the right lesson, sadly.
@-wc- That's the thing, a game like this needs all the good word of mouth it can get because competing with Mario Kart is a big ask. Adding stuff that won't quite fly for many people before you've got any brand loyalty is absolute madness.
tried lite version felt like the driving wasn't good so I'm sticking with Mario Kart
@-wc- "is it because the free money was in apology?"
I believe this is correct.
The main complaint was micro-transactions shouldn't be relied on to enjoy a game you already paid $50 for. Them giving everyone "500 Mythril free of charge" costs them nothing since it's content already in the game accessed through a made up currency. They lose nothing giving away in-game currency and it's actually an attempt to "hook" players into paying for it later down the road. It's a classic F2P tactic, except this game isn't F2P.
This response was already tone deaf on it's own. The currency expiring is just icing on the cake.
While just adding new content to a game through DLC doesn't have to be evil, those screenshots with their "login bonuses" and in-game ads are straight out of the slimiest crevices of mobile gacha hell. Disgusting to see lil' Chocobo done dirty like this.
The incredibly annoying, forced tutorial was enough to make me delete this rubbish after 5 minutes.
This just isn’t worth it. For 20-30 with season passes maybe, but for 50 it’s a pass.
And I tried the lite version. It’s alright, but nothing spectacular compared to every other kart racer. I’ll just wait for the Mario Kart DLC.
@-wc- The screenshots would seem to suggest that the expiration applies not only to the apology currency, but to any sources of free currency not paid for through cash, whether from their login bonuses (itself a fairly predatory tactic) or any other ways the player can earn it in-game.
Besides just being an entirely arbitrary anti-consumer measure with zero technical justification, that SE had to go out of their way to explicitly implement, it's a deceptive tactic that offers the illusion of consumer agency by offering what appears to be alternative means of obtaining rewards besides forking over cash for them, but in reality actively prevents players from actually saving up the currency over time that they'd need to do so.
They're putting the "trick" in "trickle," in other words.
@Astral-Grain that’s 100% why I’m just not gonna even start. The “free” currency is tempting, but I don’t want to keep paying down the road just to be able to get every new character they add.
I only got the "lite" version, thank god. After trying the game and realizing all that is wrong with it, I have decided it is a HUGE no for the full game. I ain't dropping $50 usd on this mess. I stopped playing CTR and Hot Wheels Unleashed because of all the BS micro transactions and season passes. I was hesitant about the MK DLC after the game has been out for 7+ years, But at least that game is tuned and I know i wont be asked for Fifty Cents every time I breathe. I said it before Chocobo GP could have been that one great Mario Kart killer and SE messed it all up. And those twits didn't even bother to offer a physical to North America.
If I’ve learned about S-E over the past few years, it’s that if it’s Final Fantasy related, I’m probably gonna be pissed off about some stupid *****; if it’s Dragon Quest related, I’m probably gonna be really pleased by the overall quality and care put into it.
If it’s anything else in between that I care about (Mana, Saga, pop-up style SNES inspired games) it depends on if it’s console (good) or mobile (already lost me).
I’m not a Final Fantasy fan and I wasn’t planning to get this game in the first place, but why would anyone get this over Mario Kart? Especially with the DLC!
DLC can extend the life of a great game…….if it’s done right. These companies must offer a good base product to justify DLC. Not this. Smash has a heavy roster of various characters already so it’s dlc wasn’t overkill (though I still questioned why certain characters were chosen for the passes “cough Joker cough”). But with Chocobo it’s micro transactions the game!
@GameOtaku right on bud. DLC can do wonders for an already amazing and established title. Smash Ultimate is a great example, Street Fighter V is also a good one. SFV's roster was lackluster with the DLC being the "solution" when characters on the pass should've been on the base roster. thing is, it really just depends on the devs
@fighting_game_player
In all honesty though DLC is a scummy practice anyway. I’d rather just unlock things through normal gameplay especially after having paid a premium for the game. But if the game actually has an abundance of content without it it makes it fair.
For me, its the song. I hate the menu song more than I have ever hated anything else before. No, I don't need to be reminded every second I play the game who Chocobo and his friends are. I love them, but don't underestimate my ability to lose enthusiasm. The menu theme is horrible, and it creeps between every option. It's everywhere and inescapable. I hate that.
@Silly_G Hated that as well. Made me pecking mad!
@vicviper001 Which makes me wonder what peck neck actually gave it an 8 here. 4 at best, given all the microtransactions, might have been worth an 8 if there weren't any, as should have been the case.
So nearly 80 bucks since it requires the turd NSO to even operate..haha yeah no. I'm still expecting this to go full f2p like Knockout City did once this flops.
Did you guys get some gil on the side to rate is so high or something?
@PigmaskFan when they reviewed it, micro transactions weren’t in their review copy, at least as far as I understand it
Removed - flaming/arguing; user is banned
This damage control is funny, I was hoping Square Enix would do this to try to appease people and they did. Ha! The 500 mythril you get when you log in the game today is titled "Apologies for the Inconvenience." Oh I bet.
Nintendolife, with all due respect, how was this number 2 in the best kart racers on the Switch?
This is better than CTR Nitro Fueled? Really?
All the games companies just don't get it: making a kart game won't replicate the MarioKart experience.
Nintendo's secret sauce is their game mechanics.
Nintendo games are all based on a pre-defined laws that controls the gameplay. In Mariokart, players in last place are given rockets and boosters to move them forward. Players in the middle are given blue shells, red shells, bomb, etc to attack the front. First place player is given banana peel or useless coins. These laws create a tight game that ensures more chaotic competition - that is what makes MarioKart fun.
Seriously i swear the people currently running Square Enix are a bunch of muppets
Some of the decisions they have been making are mind-bogglingy stupid
The way this is setup, should be ftp with the passes, OR retail price for all content/full game (meaning no pass purchase needed)
Giving away 500 Mythril for acknowledging the dissatisfaction with the monetization does nothing. They shouldn't have launched a full priced game with all these microtransactions. They should have done it like Disney and only launched a F2P game.
Still not good enough I'm afraid.
The only way I am buying this game for 40 is if they remove all the microtransaction nonsense AND add all the content they're clearly holding back.
8 unique tracks is an incomplete game in my view!
Game is monetized like a free cell-phone game but costs €50.
Yeah no I'm out.
@itslukec You are my hero for today.
@Pikaboom I never said "doomed from the start"??
I try not to criticize other people's opiniones... but it baffles me the score Nintendolife gave to this game. I tried the "lite" version and is amazingly boring and generic.
And all this microtransactions and dlcs in the paid version feels scummy. I don't know how they failed to address that properly in their review.
bought MK8DX after trying ChocoboGP Lite. Best decision 2022.
@Fath
OK now I get it!
this is the kind of game I would play ONLY if i can grind away, at my own pace, without having to spend any real money besides the initial cost.
what youve made clear is that the free money expires policy is yet another underhanded structure put in place to prevent people like me from enjoying their game this way.
thanks!
I've had my fill of something partially similar to this(in terms of playing the game daily for countless hours to earn characters, skins, kart bodies, decals, etc.)with CTR Nitro-Fueled. This game might be a soft pass for me but I will still enjoy the video content that comes from it at least.
I'm so disappointed in Square Enix. This, plus the switch """""ports""""" makes me hate this company.
@Jumping_Dead
As I said before, I also wonder what peck neck gave it that score - even if microtransactions weren't yet active at the time, the main interface would have made it clear that they were there.
Laughs in the note of "like ***** am I paying 40 bucks for that garbage"
If they can adjust the transactions to a fair amount then for me this is better than Mario Kart. I've never had so much chaotic fun in a racer before. I probably been playing almost non stop since it came out and no have issues with game play. When I'm losing I'm still having fun and having a laugh. I really hope they fix the transactions so more people can appreciate the chaotic fun
@MatoFilipovic Yeah, I think they already said they were thinking about doing that starting when the first pass ends.
