Mario Party Superstars has been out in the wild for a couple of weeks now, serving up a whole lot of classic minigames and boards to a new audience on Switch. We enjoyed it in our review, highlighting that the original content is blended with all sorts of modern-day conveniences like better AI, shiny HD visuals and online play.
Online play is there from day one in this latest release after its belated arrival in Super Mario Party, and a trailer posted by Nintendo UK (above) highlights that nicely with four charming individuals playing online before meeting up for a rematch in person. It's standard fare for a Nintendo game advert, and that's ok.
But, something did catch our eye. This advert shows voice chat in the online play, and so those producing it were no doubt obliged to suggest these players would use the Nintendo Switch Online app on their phones. Remember the NSO app? Do you still have it on your phone/tablet? Well, it still exists, and can indeed support voice chat in this game.
It's subtle, but squint at the phones in shot and they're certainly not using Discord and similar apps like most people attempting online Switch gaming - nope, it's that official app.
It feels like the Switch Online app was largely ditched a while ago, but it lives on with some game support and updates. Of course, Nintendo is planning to spend a huge amount of money on improving its Nintendo Account services and infrastructure - hopefully in the not-too-distant future voice chat in Nintendo games will more closely resemble a 2020s solution.
Let us know if you're using the Switch Online App for voice chat... wait, what are we saying?

I thought “what if nobody comments because nobody is using the Switch app for voice chat and leaves this article completely devoid of comments?”
Then I blew it and thought that there may be someone who does.
I actually DO use it haha...I have used it for Mario Party and it worked well. Lucky we can't vice chat strangers during a party though or there would be some eff words flying around (someone online stole my gold pipe last night then used it themselves and used Toad 'Thanks' sticker' urrrgh!) I could've thrown my Switch across the room!
Well Nintendo online is free so you get what you pay for.
Oh wait. 🤑
Imagine paying $80/yr for NO+ and having to use a phone app?🤣
Literally the only time I use that app is when playing animal crossing with friends, it makes it much easier to chat/emote in game than using the in-game inputs, but that's about all it's good for. Will often be talking to them over discord at the same time as well
In fairness, what's the point of investing in a big voicechat infrastructure when people are already using free services that are always going to be better?
Yeah I forgot the app existed. I had it on my phone when it launched but deleted it sometime after. If I’m playing games online with friends we just use Discord… or I just call them for the few that don’t know what Discord is.
Forgot the app existed, deleted it a long time ago. My friends and I usually use the Xbox party chat 😂
@Severian What if nobody comments because we're ALL using the Switch Voice App as our exclusive form of communication?
"Let us know if you're using the Switch Online App for voice chart... wait, what are we saying?"
Indeed, what on earth is a voice chart?😅
As for voice chats, I care for them even less than for online multiplayer itself. Tried it once on the supposedly more advanced Vita... only to get kicked out of the session because the game lost its connection the moment I switched to the chat app. Forgive me for not being sad that Switch's own system resources aren't spent to house this stuff.
Btw, the switch app is updated for animal crossing, i like the daily newspaper
If this was 20-years ago, Nintendo would be at the forefront of this whole online gaming thing.
Time to negative bomb the trailer advert
When in doubt, follow Blizzard's example of how to deal with the complaints.
Seriously though, after all this time, I'm surprised Nintendo still hasn't given a big enough incentive to use the NSO app outside of the game-specific services, not to mention the many times Nintendo has done the opposite, as mentioned in this article.
@nhSnork Haha, whoops...
I use the app all the time, it works well.
I can't fault Nintendo for trying to protect kids by not offering native voice chat, instead leaving liability up to phone makers
Only the developers of Fortnite are clever enough to implement voice chat in-game.
I think the next console will work more closely with mobile phones. To be honest, it's refreshing to see online chat without silly chairs and massive headsets. This is my kinda future. I don't want to look like I work in a McDonalds call center while gaming.
@Zeldawakening I certainly can. If they are gonna put out a product they need to own it and take responsibility, not pass off features to mobile phones because of fear of liability.
@GrailUK Those "massive headsets" are called headphones and if you care about audio quality at all you use them over earbuds any day of the week.
@Bluerangervegeta I don't like wearing anything over my ears full stop. As long as I can hear it outta my telly, I'm fine. Hasn't done me wrong for the last 40 years lol.
Most people are not gonna use an entirely new app specifically for this crap in the era of Discord and native voice chatting
@rjejr Who's paying $80 a year and how could voice chat even remotely be a factor in it being worth $80?
I’ve only very recently started using the app, and it’s for the daily Nook Points - definitely not the voice chat lol.
I think most people just use discord.
I literally just use it for all of the useful animal crossing functions. Obviously I call using discord though.
@Lyricana "Who's paying $80 a year"
Families.
Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack [New Customers]
12 months single user - $49.99 / €39,99 / £34.99
12 months family pass (up to 8 users) - $79.99USD / €69,99 / £59.99

@rjejr You stated it like it's some standard price that an individual is paying. No cost means anything without context. $80 would be a lot, say, for one person. But it's insanely cheap for 8 people. $10 per person is a steal. Also, the name "family plan" doesn't mean you have to be a family. I have eight people on mine and it's extremely affordable.
I'm not saying it's a great deal for everyone at $50 a year for an individual, but mentioning $80 just makes the opposite point: how great of a deal the family plan is.
@Lyricana My family plan is my family, my 2 kids and I, so that's 3. As the parent I pay for it. So probably someone out there is paying the entire $80 for their family. I never said everyone was. In fact I never said anyone was, it was a question. But someone probably is.
