Today sees the arrival of Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl on the Nintendo Switch. They're remakes based on the classic titles released for the Nintendo DS in 2006/07.
Many trainers around the globe will be picking up one or the other - or perhaps even both, and we're curious to know what exactly the Nintendo Life community will be doing. Will you be picking up the remake, and if so - what version will you be getting? Vote in our poll and leave a comment below.

I didn't have a DS or a childhood so I'm actually looking forward to picking these up soon.
The series may receive a lot of hate for both right and wrong reasons, but I do actually have fun playing these games.
someday I will get Pokemon. I spent my money on Metroid Dread today from the Eshop. I am looking forward to enjoying it
Man I can't wait! I have been wondering why this gen is so loved, and after looking more into it, I think it will be my favorite too.
True I didn't like the art style before, but it really grew on me, Like mold does to old milk kind of grow.
Just hope I get it tomorrow, I will check if amazon shipped it later today.

I got them both off of the walmart pricing mistake today lol.
I wish I could want these remakes, because the Pokemon remake series (setting aside LGP/E) was always great before this point, but these are not worth the asking price. I might get them at $30, but not $60.
@Harmonie For a pair of games that are basically a glorified HD face-lift of the DS games (sans the Platinum content), you got that right that they aren't worth the price.
I think I'm going to go ahead and get Brilliant Diamond today, despite being worried from the reviews. I've never played a Pokemon game and I've been planning to for so long.
I’m getting the dual pack once Amazon ships it. Also getting a digital copy of one of them since I will have to share the dual pack with my kids
God Brilliant Diamond for me and Shining Pearl for my fiancee.
Just started it couple of hours ago and seems like a blast. Feels very nostalgic after all these years.
@FishyS Oh Don't worry about that, if you love JRPG or ever played one you will like this game. Not all pokemon games are great, but even the ones that are bad are great at showing you a good time.
Where is the option for OG Pearl on NDS? I grabbed one this week!
I have the Diamond version on my DS.
So, I will get the Pearl version, now.
Full circle
Brilliant Diamond since i like the Blue color scheme of cover and Dialga.
I’ll snag both physical so my girls can play em too. But I’m a might too broke atm from a series of releases over the last few weeks.
Pearl was the first Pokémon game that I got to play and I really enjoyed it! Never finished it though, due to reasons beyond my control at the time. My wife and I are picking up both to jump in and enjoy!
I'm still unsure about it. Pearl was my first Pokémon game and I still love Sinnoh, but I'm not sure if I want to return to a version that's worse
Palkias better
I’m getting shining Pearl, because my grandmothers name was Pearl.
Got Diamond this time since I had Pearl way back.
@tamantayoshi your lucky your the only person Walmart forget to check and fix by canceling order lol
Neither because of reasons already established multiple times. Maybe sometime down the line but certainly not for a while.
@CheekyZelda Palkai Gang Rise Up!
Had Brilliant Diamond pre-ordered and currently playing it right now.
None?
I stopped at Sun and Moon and don’t plan to buy any new entries for a while thank you
I wanted to buy them but forced EXP share forces me not to buy these games.
If the games had included the Platinum content, then it might have been a harder question, but without that, and with Legends Arceus coming out only two months later, combined with the fact that I was never that attached to the originals in the first place, I feel I'd be better off saving my money for that then spending it on this remake, as decent as it probably still is.

I actually never beaten the original games so I’ll definitely pick this up.
Also @NinjaGuy69 just because you don’t like the remakes doesn’t mean that people who buy the remakes are stupid.
Removed - unconstructive
I really wish these were good remakes so I could go back to Sinnoh. As it stands though, I'm skipping them. Pokemon deserves better than these.
@NinjaGuy69 ...sure tell people who buy and enjoy games that others don’t like as having low standards and lacking “the ability to expand their minds and think critically” maybe people don’t like being critical.
@NinjaGuy69 also you say big brains spit on small brains.
I'll buy Brilliant Diamond used on Ebay for $40. They're not worth any more than that.
Removed - offensive remarks
I've preordered Brilliant Diamond, since my connection to Dialga is the strongest of the two.
@Gamer_Zeus It doesn't "force" you not to.
@Snatcher You won't fully understand it until you play Platinum. DP themselves were good, but had some major flaws. The biggest one being the Sinnoh Dex had terrible variety and the gym leader rosters because of this ended up being terrible as well. That and some of the other additions (the Battle Frontier, the expanded storyline with the addition of the Distortion World as a new area) made Platinum a significantly improved experience over DP. That's why BDSP largely ignoring Platinum content is such a sticking point.
@NinjaGuy69 How is it "insulting"?
@Harmonie I don't think there's a "could" or "could not" want. I mean, you either want to try it out, or you don't.
My friend asked me if I was getting this after passing on Unite. I said "No, this time it's not political, I just don't buy crap"
@NinjaGuy69 I actually do have small standards I like games like sonic boom, sonic 06, paper Mario SS
And the like. But hey I’m just a guy on the internet who loves playing video games.😉
This is the best Pokemon game on the switch so far. The art style is great because and consistent instead of how messy swsh was
Also to people saying that the games are bad YouTube comments say they’re excited to play the games. And the poll had more people saying they’re getting it day one.
Oh and also DIALGA SQUAD RISE UP!!!🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪
@Sourcecode hey it’s no prob.
I was able to get the dual pack today for super cheap thanks to my son watching his phone constantly
I’m importing this from the UK for the steelbox. Gotta wait a few extra days before receiving.
@mr-duster It's an expression. Saying it in other words: "I liked all of the Pokemon remakes beforehand (excluding LGP/E, which are their own thing), that it feels sad to not be able to be excited for these".
@Greatluigi The majority liking something is not at all a valid argument against someone thinking something is bad.
I probably shouldn't because the quality just isn't there, but DP were the games that got me back into Pokemon, from my large gap since Yellow. My brother and I bonded over it, and it's very nostalgic to me. So I guess I'm getting Pearl tomorrow
Not gonna get them, as much as I've been looking forward to gen 4 remakes since I was a kid, there doesn't seem to be enough new content to justify buying them. Still got my DS, and copies of Diamond/Platinum, me and my gf are both considering replaying them
@Harmonie I'm sorry that you didn't enjoy them. But I truly don't think it's about being able to be excited. Either you are, or you aren't.
@Bolt_Strike I fully understand, It messed up to cut content like that, I understand I wont understand, Since I never played pokemon plat, I will never fully understand the feeling, but I can understand why.
( idk if this makes sense, But i'm just trying to say, That I know why people are mad about the cut content, I i'm to in a way, and I'm not trying to be "Screw you I like it" Because it does matter)
Playing Pearl first for old time’s sake. I never played much of Diamond as I bought it on clearance LONG after completing Platinum, and the original Gen IV games are almost impossible to go back to on account of their sluggishness.
This will be my first time picking Turtwig, who I have never particularly cared for, but I’ll give her a shot.
Nah, I wont be picking these up. The last Pokemon game to hold my interest was FireRed. I couldn't finish or even get very far in Pokemon games since then. Hope those who do get it enjoy it, just not for me.
I'll be getting Pearl for Christmas. The more casual RPG will feel refreshing since I'm currently knee deep into SMT V which is really tough.
Maybe if I can get it for around £25 , I don't know which one though both the same game really anyway
Getting it after work today, didn't play the original that much so I'm looking forward to trying it again. Used copies of the DS games are expensive as hell right now, especially Platinum, so this is the easiest and cheapest way to play them, at least where I live.
Will get Diamond as I like the design of the legendary more. Great to play between Shin Megami Tensei V sessions.
"Small brains pay for low quality products like these so-called remakes, us big brains spit on them."
I can only see one small brain in the comments section.
Nah, not getting these. Maybe one they're half off, but even then the cheap mobile cr@p art style would be hard to force myself to enjoy.
I'm not sure what people saying that it'll sell as a counter argument to those that think these are cr@p are trying to prove? Afterall, Assassin's Creed, Fifa, Call of Duty and many other popular games sell and it doesn't really prove their quality.

Gen 4 is the only generation that I never played (or rather, I played HG/SS but missed Diamond/Pearl/Plat), so this is going to be a day one for me. I'm a little bummed to see the EXP Share doesn't have an off switch, but I tend to play with it on most games anyway unless I'm doing a challenge run.
Grabbing Pearl since I'm pretty sure it'll be the less popular of the two, which is usually how I make my decisions on which version to get.
My excitement for these remakes slowly dropped after hearing more and more about the content...of all the remakes...these were just...why?
@Razzy Play whatever you like. If you think the games look bad, that's your opinion and it's fine as long as you don't insult other people's intelligence like the insecure fella above. I think these remakes look fine. Nothing remarkable, but not mobile quality either. Taste differs.
Regarding the sales argument: yeah, that's pretty stupid. But it also comes down to opinion. A lot of people like these games. I can't say that some of these titles are objectively bad, just not my taste. Some games I like sell like crazy, some games I like don't. I still enjoy them equally though.
I am getting Platinum
I own both versions to trade exclusives.
I'm really behind on this generation, I haven't bought in to SwSh nor do I plan to get these games yet. These ones have more of a chance than SwSh though. Might get them if I can find one on eBay in the near future.
Palkia gang obv.
Haven't played since blue, going to wait for Arceus to get back into it methinks.
Diamond has the better pokes, although back in the day I swear I went for pearl? then again I probably got both... lets go!
@Maximumbeans Get This man (Or woman) some Purple Robes, your in Palk for life!
@Snatcher Oh yeeah, feels good!
First mainline Pokemon I haven't gotten day 1, may give it a go at some point.
Got the double pack for me and my sister. Though I'll be starting late since the only catching I'll be doing this month are angels and demons in SMT V
There are so many better games out right now and the remakes are the worst yet so I won't get them any time soon. Maybe if there is a good sale I'll get them someday, but not sure yet.
@mr-duster Yes it does.
It's a feature so repellant to me that i am forced not to purchase it. Even though i really want too, because these are my favourite games in the series.
Doesn't matter though, not touching another Pokemon game until the company changes direction.
@Quarth Yeah, it's just my opinion, if someone else likes it, more power to them. The number of people buying these games is much too large for any kind of boycott to work, so GameFreak will continue doing what brings them cash. I can only decide for myself, and after the rather significant case of buyer's remorse I've had after getting Shield, I'm staying clear of these.
Keep thinking of replaying Y, though.
It always just struck me as funny, to use sales numbers as a kid if 'gotcha' argument about the quality of the product. I mean, McDonald's has massive sales numbers, but I don't think anyone would call their food truly high quality.
I might get Arceus, though, if anything for them actually changing things.

Probably not getting either one, because I've never been that into Pokemon and at the moment SMTV has me covered.
Why are they separate releases?
@NinjaNicky Those of us who don't like it, aren't buying it. And that doesn't for one second mean we can't have an express our opinions.
I have played Pokemon since the very beginning, and had set a standard for remakes after FR/LG, HG/SS, and OR/AS. Naturally, I'm disappointed in these games and naturally I'm going to express that.
BTW, it must be really nice to have so much disposable income that you can just throw $60 at a game and then delete it after trying it for a few minutes and buy another $60 game. =/
Diamond cause thats what I had as a kid
@Gamer_Zeus No, it does NOT. Nothing is "forcing" you not to buy these games. You can always buy these games if you want to. But you don't. You're not being forced to buy these games. You just don't want to. And I'm sorry for that. It saddens me that people aren't willing to at least give something a try before they judge it.
@Yosher I respect how you feel. But it just saddens me when people refuse to at least give something a try and see if they like it or not.
@mr-duster $60 is a heck of a lot to spend to give something you already feel is lackluster a try.
@mr-duster That's the thing though. I've tried Pokémon, for years. The first five generations? Amazing. Loved each and every game and always will look back on them all very, very fondly.
Then generation 6 rolled around. Didn't like it. Okay. Fair enough. Could be a fluke. Generation 7 came. Didn't like that either. That's worrying. But whatever. Generation 8 came around. And all the things I didn't like about the previous 2 generations returned with more problems on the horizon and I just cancelled my pre-order. These generation 4 remakes aren't going to change that.
If I want to play Sinnoh, I still have my original Diamond, Pearl, AND Platinum cartridges anyway. Spending 50+ dollars just to 'try something' after already having established it's just not fun anymore several times over, for 50+ bucks each time (actually 100+ for me because I always bought both versions), at some point you're just... done.
@Harmonie At least it's not $120.00
@Yosher I meant like trying new installments, seeing if you like them or not. I know you didn't like gens 6-7. At least you tried them. I certainly can't speak for everyone, but I personally believe it's a poor era of judgement to give up on something without legitimately seeing if you end up liking it or not.
@mr-duster Like I said, all the things I didn't like from those previous generations returned in Sword and Shield, and these gen 4 remakes aren't faring much better. Why would I need to try it when I can already see that I won't like it? I tried the previous gens and didn't like them, and I'm just done spending so much money just to try something. Money doesn't grow on trees, I have better things to spend it on than 'oh, maybe I will like this game after all if I just give it a try even though it's a very small chance'.
That said, if I ever find them for really cheap, like at MOST half price, then I'll probably still try them. But that's not likely to happen with Pokémon games, so.. it's just very likely not going to come into my collection.
@Yosher I never said money grew on trees. And it doesn't go like "oh, maybe I will like this game after all if I just give it a try even though it's a very small chance". It's a matter of going into something with an open mind and a positive attitude, provided you choose to spend money. No one is demanding you buy these games. That's entirely your choice, and I understand why you don't want to.
I'm sorry, this just really depresses me...
@mr-duster I don't understand why you're arguing it then if it depresses you. If you enjoy the games, then by all means go for it, I'm not stopping you. Other people not enjoying these games doesn't stop you from enjoying them! You do you, don't let the opinions or choices of other people bring you down.
Oh, I'm not trying to argue anything. All I want is to let people know how I feel about this sort of thing. And the thing is I want to have a good time, but I also want people (not referring to you) to not berate fans for playing them. It's no fun being called a "sheep" or a "bootlicker" or an "apologist". I just want to play Pokemon. That's all. No agendas, no obligations, none of that.
@mr-duster i gave forced exp share a try and it ruined my entire experience of Pokemon, i have no intention of trying it again.
It's a ridiculous feature that has been added to make an already easy game, even more easy.
The way i see it, if they want to force exp share on us, then i am forced not to support them. Yes it is forced, because i want to support them but i am unable too, their ridiculous feature has forced me into making a decision i didn't want to make.
I honestly don't care that it saddens you either, i don't play games to make you or anyone else happy.
I got Diamond, just sounded more appealing to me. I never understood why anyone would buy both versions either, there is never all that much in the way of differences.
@JayJ I never understood until a friend of mine who made a good point. He keeps one version as his main game and to catch all the pokemon. Then uses the other version to replay the story without having to do it on his main version.
@Gamer_Zeus To be honest, I never saw a problem with Exp. Share in the first place. For me, it made things far less tedious.
And I wasn't talking about the Exp. Share being forced. I was talking about it being ridiculous that you're being forced not to buy these games. You're not. You either want these games or you don't.
But if you don't want to play these games, there's nothing wrong with that. And when I said that this whole thing depresses me, I was talking to Yosher, not you.
@mr-duster comment#83
Your quote "it saddens me".
You said that to me, i don't care about your conversation with anyone else and i don't care that it saddens you.
I want to purchase these games, but i am forced not too because there is a feature that is being forced into these games that make them boring.
I use to be a fan of the series but since they started forcing EXP share, i have been FORCED to stop supporting them.
What is it about that concept that is flying over your head?
@Gamer_Zeus Nothing about this is flowing over my head, because that's not how it works.
You are perfectly capable of buying these games whether they have an automatic Exp. Share or not. Obviously the Exp. Share isn't something you want in these games, so you choose to skip them. And that's fine. I'm not saying it's bad to skip these games. I understand that you're passing on them because of the Exp. Share, but it's not "forcing" you to skip them because of it. I really don't know what lead to this way of thinking.
You haven't been "forced" to do anything. You just choose not to buy these games because the automatic Exp. Share isn't something you like.
GameStop has the “Play With No Risk” promo going on with Pokemon DP for those that want to try it out first.
After playing a few hours, it honestly feels like a well polished game. The graphics and chibi characters brings a modern aesthetic to the older art style. And the remastered music is banging (I highly recommend using a pair of good earphones). Never played the DS games, but I really doubt I would prefer playing those versions instead. I do prefer exp. share and I do like how it awards more points to those who participated in battle then those who didn’t, so that still encourages me to swap starter Pokémon.
I’m obviously keeping my copy.
Quick backstory
Saw Pocket Monsters in a magazine in the mid 90’s. Wanted to import it. Didn’t do it.
Got either Red or Blue US version. Never played it much.
Got Shining Pearl today. Basically my first Pokemon game ever. Just waiting for this massive update file to download and install.
Was very attached to the originals when younger was around my uni days (best era of Pokemon imo) but these are a hollow shell with gutted difficulty and removal of platinum content. So Ill not be picking them. Id rather play my copies of Platinum and HG.
My wife got her double pack from Amazon today so she's happy. I lost interest in Pokemon after Gen 3 myself.
I have really good memories of the first 3 Pokémon games, but Pokémon SwSh destroyed all my chilhood dreams of being a Pokémon trainer.
The whole game felt like I was following a soulless script. Every aspect of the game felt forced:
The 'rival' is just your best friend that is hardly trying to he a better trainer then you. Yet he keeps reminding that he's your 'rival' because a rival is part of the Pokémon formula.
Same with Team Yell, never did they actually feel intimidating but the game needs a group of bad guys.
It was no longer a vibrant world where Pokémon play an integral role in the daily lives of people. Sure Pidgeot wasn't the greatest attacker but I sure cared about him because he used to fly me all over the world. Chansey was great because she helped me heal my team.
During my Pokémon SwSh playthrough I never felt a connection with any of my pokémon, they were just tools for combat, it might as well have been actual sword that you discard the moment you find a better one.
I miss having to actually put any work in your team, it was a pain to level the abra's and magikarp but when they finally evolve it's all worth it!
In Pokémon SwSh I had several lvl 70+ Pokémon that had never even seen battle, just because of the mandatory XP share and the game was giving out xp candy at every corner.
So long story short, no, I'm not getting the remakes nor am excited for any upcoming Pokémon release. If Legends: Arceus turns out the be a 9 or a 10 I'll happily jump back on the Pokémon train, but for now I have no faith anymore.
I might wait for a coupon or a sale. I just picked up six physical games in a Black Friday sale so I've spent enough lol
Got both of them.
