If you're still trying to decide the Nintendo Switch that's right for you, perhaps this side-by-side...by-side comparison of the new Pokémon Diamond and Pearl remakes can help.
YouTube channel 'Open Surprise' has uploaded a video showing what the latest Pokémon Switch releases look like on each of the different models, and the side-by-side results are quite interesting to see. The game actually looks quite impressive on the Switch Lite, in particular.
Overall though, the new Diamond and Pearl games play great across all three systems. Take a look for yourself:
Which Nintendo Switch have you been playing this game on? The Lite, standard version or the OLED model? And have you been playing in docked or handheld mode? Tell us your Switch of choice to play the Pokémon Diamond and Pearl remakes in the comments below.

I prefer the gameboy versions, these just look so icky ;D
Would be nice to see a comparison with the DS games to see all the graphical improvements and updates to the region that were included in Platinum. 🤷
OLED 99% of the time, but I transfer the save to the Lite if I intend to continue while on the move (especially as there is no HD rumble support whatsoever).
I’ll also use the Lite more frequently when I get around to playing Diamond and trade between the two versions (Pearl being my main version). The Pokémon that are available pre-Elite Four are annoyingly limited, so, I want a more varied team for my Diamond run with some of the “new” evolutionary forms.
Part of me is yearning for something of a Dazzling Platinum version that includes all of the changes introduced in the original, but perhaps such a version ought to be discounted for digital owners of the existing remakes. It wouldn’t work as DLC as the content lies in the sum of the changes throughout the campaign itself as opposed to any incidental changes that would make the additions worthwhile to the campaign as it currently exists. I want to preserve the Diamond/Pearl experience while being able to re-experience Platinum with the changes/new content, though I’m likely in the minority here.
@Sahnec I sure love Diamond and Pearl for the Nintendo 64!
@VoidofLight I think you’re getting confused. The definitive versions of Diamond and Pearl were released on the Commodore 64, not the Nintendo 64.
They really revolutionised the Teletext classics.
Don't the original switch and the revised switch have different screens? If not they are at least calibrated differently, so maybe he should have a 4th up there.
@Maxz True... True... but what about the version of Platinum for the Magnavox Odyssey? That's the definitive version of these titles.
I don't really get these videos... the three look identical. I've seen the game on a Lite and an OLED side-by-side and the differences are size of screen and significant brightness - which we all already know. This video doesn't show any difference in brightness? Like I said, I really don't understand the point of this video - is it to try and make OLED look bad?!
@VoidofLight what about the lesser known Ouya port??
Wow, the lite is actually the better of the 3 minus the tinny audio. Standard is washed out, and sadly..the oled you can see each individual pixel. They really should of raised the resolution on the oled, making the screen bigger but not the resolution just makes it more pixely visually apperntly.
Wow i didnt know the lite screen was even smaller.
@Travisemo007,
Very tough to judge from the video, as the OLED will go much brighter and is running in standard colour mode, if you switch on the OLED's vivid mode than some games will benefit a great deal, and the colours will pop more.
@nocdaes The point of the video is to generate clicks from the hot game of the moment. Why else would NintendoLife be going so hard into coverage of a game that didn't even review that well on their site?
What a useless video.
That's the first time I see a comparison video where I could tell the colors look better on the OLED model. That said, I dunno if it's because of video recording or if it's my eyes but I do see that "tiny squares effect" everywhere on the OLED. It looks like what my PSP looks like. Maybe it would look better in front of me.
Target has a display right now with all 3 Switches with playable demos. The OLED model is clearly the best in terms of visuals, but the Lite has the best controller. I still prefer the Anbernic 351P for its controls, user customization, and portability 😉
@Bobb OLED is 217 PPI while the original is 237 PPI and the difference is dramatic when holding the unit inches away, but at a normal viewing distance of about 16 inches most people won’t notice them.
Loving playing it on the big screen!
playing it on my switch OLED. Love the look of it. I also play it on the big screen too.
@Papichulo I saw that Switch display in the Target near me, first time I had seen an OLED in person and I was really impressed. Wasn't expecting to be, but there was no denying how much nicer it looked. Made me think they had the OLED screen set to full brightness and the others to low but I wasn't in the mood to try and go into all of the settings and find out.
It is interesting to see them side by side, but now I'm really curious about the width. They made an 8 minute video, they couldn't take 1 minute to compare them horizontally so we could see how much wide OLED is?
The DS version because thats the best version.
@Sahnec,
Sorry, did not take the whole comment in, and yes obvious now, just so many haters in the various threads it's easy to miss jokes now and again... deleted my comment.
As a collector I have the DS versions as well as the Switch versions. Therefore I see no need to worry about which version plays or looks the best. I can just play the version I want to play at any time.
Mwhahaha...
@rjejr Got a modern smartphone? It probably has an OLED. Are you impressed with it too? I think Nintendo could release cardboard and people would be impressed by it and say they had never seen such impressive cardboard before. Nintendo just gets that kind of special treatment.
@Bobb The OLED is so impossible to show the difference on video. The tiny pixels is only because of the camera. The color difference between Original and OLED is so insane that I honestly think the display units in Target are going to convince people more than any ads.
You can barely see it on video.
@frogopus You don't think Nintendo gets special treatment that other companies wouldn't get?
Still, side by side, with both in my hands right now, the oled screen is much better.
...but is it better than your smartphone OLED screen and if not, why is it such a big deal when Nintendo releases a system with an OLED screen?
@frogopus well, for one, I'm not really interested in comparing my $1k device with the $350 that i use for two different things
Ok but my point is that an OLED screen is not anything to be 'impressed' by in 2021 if you have been looking at one on your smartphone for years.
People just love to praise Nintendo for basic stuff that everyone has been doing for years. BTW, plenty of people game on their phones so don't start typing 'but phones aren't for gaming so it's not the same as the Switch'. Many games on the Switch are mobile ports.
On my fanboy scale, that's on the same level as people who say 'OMG, FF7 or GTA is finally on a Nintendo platform and that makes it worth the price' as if they haven't been playing those games on other platforms for 20 years anyway. You still play with an analog stick and buttons no matter which platform you choose.
I really hope we get remakes of Gold and Silver. Those are my favourite Pokemon games of all time and it would be fun to be able to play them on Switch with modern graphics. There was some talk about sequels to the 'Let's Go' games being remakes of Gold and Silver but I am not sure if they are still happening now.
I'm very happy with my Lite. Sure I'd prefer a bigger and better screen but am relieved that I don't have to be concerned with the joy con issues.
Is it just me or does the Lite/OLED screens look incredibly washed-out? The colors just don't seem to pop. The standard screen in that video looked like a million times better imo.
@Crono1973 You obviously don't know me very well, or at all really, I'm old and cranky and hate everything. Well except the Nintendo cardboard, Labo is pretty cool. My avatar is kind of my own joke on my personality.😝
My smartphone came out about a year ago so it is new, but it's also reasonably priced, not an iPhone or Samsung, so I have to doubt it's OLED. Neither is my $1,000 tv which is fake marketing bs QLED but I like it enough and knew what I was buying.
If you read my tweet, which you obviously did you replied to it, you probably saw where I wrote about screen brightness etc so I really have no idea whatsoever why you bothered replying to call me a fanboi when I basically already said what you are implying in my original comment. Seriously, make better use of your time. smh
None. I have played two Pokémon games. Red and Diamond. They were the same game. I don't need to play anymore.
@Crono1973
Perhaps because it's a games console and not a smart phone?
It's like comparing apples to oranges.
The OLED screen is a vast improvement that I never expected or expected to be so good.
@Rosona Comparing an OLED screen to OLED screen is comparing apples to oranges?
@Crono1973
That clearly isn't your point going by your original post of ---
You don't think Nintendo gets special treatment that other companies wouldn't get?
Still, side by side, with both in my hands right now, the oled screen is much better.
...but is it better than your smartphone OLED screen and if not, why is it such a big deal when Nintendo releases a system with an OLED screen?
Again, that isn't comparing OLED to OLED, that's games console to mobile phone, thus apples to oranges.
@Jimmy_G_Buckets Actually you have even more reason to be concerned because the Lite uses the same bad quality joycons and you can't remove them. If you have a problem you have to send the whole unit to repair.
@Rosona My point has always been that if you are used to looking at an OLED on your smartphone, you shouldn't be impressed by an OLED on a Nintendo Switch. Also that if any other company released a device with an OLED, no one would make a big deal out of it but Nintendo gets special treatment.
I think this guys brightness settings on his OLED are too high. If you set the brightness too high, the screen would only look marginally better than the regular Switch.
Also, you should only the brightness that high, when there is an abundance of outdoor light. Like when your playing in the car.
