Re: Nintendo Has Discontinued The NES Classic Edition in North America

Hamguar

@SLIGEACH_EIRE
Frankly this makes the most sense as things got super quiet after the first hack. In fact looking back at the NES classics articles on this site looks like the Famicon was hack only 4 days after Ninty made their statement that they would have a steady flow for the holidays.

I honestly can't fault them for discontinuing since now that the mini has been hacked so that you can have the entire system's library on it. For them to keep producing it will slit their throats virtual console wise as who in their right mind will spend a dime on VC when you can spend 60 bucks and get an entire generations worth of gaming.

Granted I'm sure not everyone would hack it but they can't take the chance.

Kinda feel bad as what was once probably once a nice holiday filler meant to stave off the drought they had ended up as a screwed one way or really screwed in another way.

I just hope they learn not to have such an easily hackable product and try again with the SNES mini. Might even be what has spurred on this call for hack hunting for the 3DS and Switch.

Unfortunately the truth lies with Nintendo and given how famously tight lipped they are I don't think they would ever be inclined to share the inside story the flaming mess that was the NES classic.

Re: Limited Stock Brings Out the Inevitable NES Mini Scalpers

Hamguar

@Jayvir
That's it right there, there are people who have no sense of self control. The one's that HAVE to have the latest, maxed out 4+ credit cards and live paycheck to paycheck even thought they don't have to if they would just be responsible and live within their means. I know too many people like this and yeah they pay up for the shiny new toys because they/their kids/their dog just HAVE to have it because life is somehow not complete without the latest bit of plastic and wire.

Yes you can speculate that people buying from scalpers have tons of cash but that doesn't make sense. If they were rich, paying 3-4x the cost of something that's worth less is bad fiscal sense and contrary to the habits one needs to gain enough wealth to have that kind of money to burn.

Honestly the more people stop buying from scalpers the faster that over-inflated price will drop, and yeah there will be a few knuckleheads that will bite, you can't stop that, but if a majority shows great resolve in not buying unless it's at a reasonable price the better

Re: Rumour: The Pokémon Company Plans to Make a Big-Budget Live-Action Pokémon Movie

Hamguar

In all frankness, it is hard to have a story properly make the jump from medium to another. For the most part most good books generally end up as bad movies because you just can't get into the mind of the characters as well as one could in books. From games to movies, you would have so much to pull from that it would be hard to condense it all and make it coherent. Also one tends to afford less suspension of disbelief to a live action movie than you would a video game. So that tightrope would have to be crossed.

This is not to say that games will always make bad movies(I remembered being decently entertained by that old Prince of Persia movie ) but it really is not as easy as one would think.

Re: Fans Should Expect "Something New" With Zelda Wii U, Says Eiji Aonuma

Hamguar

@FragRed
Too true, it could be worse than the last Metroid game. Simply put, if you ask three different Zelda fans how he should sound you would likely get three different answers. Easy answer would be to get the guy who grunts for him to do it, but honestly there is so much more to it when it comes to voicing(tone, depth etc.). Best bet is to keep him silent and the majority happy as we will fill in the blanks with our imagination. And honestly, one's voice is only a small part of communication. Personally, I loved the body language Link displayed in Twilight Princess. Especially the first time he got Ooccoo. That face was perfect.

Re: Nintendo Should Follow In Marvel's Footsteps And Produce Its Own Hollywood Movies, Say Producers

Hamguar

Eh I can only see this with either Metroid or F-Zero, which funny enough both could use the exposure. The problem is that it will require far better writing that what I've seen Nintendo capable of. I mean I saw what they were trying to go for with Samus in Other M but it was all janky and disjointed.

For instance, totally understandable in her having that freak out from seeing the Alien that ate her parents but if it was like her first time seeing him not her 10th. It would have been better to have something a kin to that in a flashback to her first encounter so that you would see it in comparison to her latest to seen how much she has grown.

Re: Rumour: EA And Nintendo Looking To Rekindle "Unprecedented Partnership" On NX

Hamguar

@sillygostly
You perfectly summed up my feelings on EA. And while for the most part what EA is asking(advertise better) is not unreasonable. It is as you say a two way street. If they give half-assed lazy ports such as ME3 when they just released a trilogy, the farce that is the new Star Wars Battlefront, or the DRM BS for Simcity, then really, what good is EA?

I understand that there are those who like the franchises that EA has and feel that Nintendo needs to do whatever it takes to get 3rd party I'm not knocking you guys but in all sincerity you cannot turn a blind eye to the overall garbage practices EA engages in. Who's to say that once EA gets Nintendo in it's pocket and completes the set that it's overall quality across the board will tank further. I know that what i say is speculation but it certainly is not baseless given their history.

Personally, I would love to enjoy some of the titles EA has, but given the current quality of their "work", I refuse to reward it, regardless of the franchise.

Re: Rumour: Final Fantasy VII Remake And XV Headed To NX, Could Be Definitive Versions

Hamguar

Well sounds interesting if it's true but in all honesty, I'm kinda wary of it all not so much on Nintendo's end but given how the remake is to be episodic my nostalgia cash grab senses are tingling. I'm not saying that FF VII can't be done right episodic for an appropriate price(i.e. not 40 bucks for 10 hours not including exclusive glow in the dark DLC underoos for an additional $10 and your favorite pinky). Just hoping Sqeenix doesn't butcher the product for the sake of a quick buck.

Re: Mighty No. 9 Has Been Delayed Once Again as Keiji Inafune Offers Sincere Apologies

Hamguar

@WebHead
Agreed, Myamoto's quote should contain the disclaimer "by people who genuinely care about making good games and not trash/cash grabs"

Personally, at this point I would say it's best to just to have no expectations at all and ignore anything from Inafune that isn't a SOLID release date for the games. Sincerely hope the game is at least half decent. I can't even imagine how ticked those who actually sunk money into this would be.

Re: Fascinating Patent Shows Nintendo Portable Utilising Free-Form Screen Technology

Hamguar

Will almost certainly pass on NX if that is the close to the final product. One of the plethora of reasons most gamers pass on phone based gaming is the lack of physical buttons. There's nothing like the press of an actual button, not for nostalgia mind you, but without physically knowing where the buttons are you can easily press the wrong one or press nothing at all. You just need that tactile feedback, this is also coming from the mindset that NX may be a hybryd system. I'm all for innovation and even have supported Nintendo 'til now but this is a red flag for me. Not the nail in the coffin for NX since, if properly implemented, this can be made into something good, but, in a vacuum this bit of tech is meh at best.

Re: The Final Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate DLC Update is Now Live

Hamguar

@readyletsgo
I actually recommend otherwise, both are amazing in their own way and will give you hundreds if not thousands(at about 2000+ since TRI) of hours of fun. Yes 4U has more monsters and new weapons but for a fair amount 3U's layout, monsters and such are just better opinion wise. Heck I've beaten just about everything 4U and I'm just raring to get back to 3U. I honestly like the monsters, quests, and weapon scheme much better. This is not to say 4U is bad by any means. It's just that for me and many others 3U just did it better. So get both and hunter your face off.

Re: Poll: The Tricky Issue of Retail Games as Download-Only Releases

Hamguar

Physical Games here and while I have dabbled in digital I will forever wholly remain physical for one simple reason. I will own it. The fact that you pay all that do to LEASE data it frankly is foolish at best and words I will leave unsaid at worst. Already people have been frustrated and burned buying digital when PSXBOX owners found that they spent thousands on unsupported games. And while you can say that the uproar got them the PSnetwork and emulation, the fact that they even attempted it once is more than enough evidence to see that it can and will happen again. It may not be as overt as this generation but by minute degrees. Take DLC, we pay now for things that were once free extras that developers added for fun and since we let it be a thing a thing it will forever remain unless something drastic happens.

I say this with the sincerest of kindness and honesty. Anyone who is all in on full digital is taking a big gamble and frankly fairly naive. I would encourage to look past the immediate gratification (i.e. convenience) and look at the long term, seriously look and even ask yourself "What is the worst case scenario in all digital and am I fine in risking it?" I have seen that people being people will tend to find the most profitable avenue for themselves, and since companies are run by people last I checked, there will come a time where they will seek profit in a manner may not be in the consumer's best interest as we have seen many times thus far.

Re: Review: Project Zero: Maiden of Black Water (Wii U)

Hamguar

@Squadallama @fluggy

Unlike most sites, NL makes full use of it's rating scale. If it is fair or average they would rate it as such in the 4-5 range. A 7 would be pretty good just shy of amazing. (8+) Of course this doesn't account for personal preferences. I've rated some titles that were 5-6 an 8-9 personally and vice versa.

I've no personal stake in your decision of course(don't like horror anything actually), but it would be unfortunate for you to miss out on a game you may enjoy due to strict adherence to the numbers, food for thought.

Re: Voice Actors Union Authorises Strike Action With Landslide 96.52 Percent Vote

Hamguar

@Dezzy
Agreed, if there's one industry that is overall far more overpaid than needed it's Hollywood. One post I found of interest is the second one down on Wil Wheton's blog.

"As someone who works on the other side of the equation, I’m going to let you know that the main reason your proposals keep getting rejected outright is because every single one has had the demand for residuals in it. It’s not happening.

You’re asking for something that nobody else in the industry gets. Programmers, designers, writers, QA, marketing, sales, none of those people get residuals. None of these guys have unions, so this isn’t a situation where our side us going to use you getting residuals as a wedge to start getting us residuals.

If you just want better working conditions, then just ask for that. The way you describe it isn’t quite as it seems. For example, I’ve worked with actors who come in and tell me that they’re all torn up from a session they did across town. So, yeah, it’s physically demanding, but it’s not like you’re so wrecked you can’t go out and do other work. Also, if I’m not mistaken, while your previous proposals have been rejected, voice actors have gotten modest pay increases every time you’ve gone to the table.

Yeah, the way those rules are worded are BS. However, if you’ve ever experienced the special hell that is trying to get an actor who doesn’t care to give you their full attention, you’d understand why this is there.

I was directing one session that was a game based on an animated show, so we were contractually obligated to use the same actors for the show. 2 lines in, and the voice director for the animated series and I have a discussion about a term. Actress asks what the deal is, director, responds. She says she’s going to go read a magazine while we figure it out. Exits the booth before we can tell her it’ll just be a second.

Right now, I have zero recourse for that behavior. I can’t reduce her pay, I can’t fire her, I can’t even dock her the 10 minutes of the session she ulitmately burns because you have to pay is an hour, and she would only work one hour sessions.

Granted, that’s an extreme scenario, and it’s ridiculous to ask you voice actors to give game companies such wide-ranging, easily abusable protections. But, there probably needs to be SOMETHING to protect against the situations I described, right?

In short, the stipulation that every requested union member be available for every audition is as much of a non-starter as residuals are. So, why don’t we just kill off both of those and figure out a way to come to terms on protection from vocally taxing sessions, and protection from unprofessional actors messing up our schedules? I think negotiations would be viewed in a much better light if they were simply about getting reasonable considerations instead of two sides going to the table attempting to extract as much as is humanly possible from the other side whole conceding nothing."

If this is true then, it's totally understandable how every proposal to date was shot down and I would have to agree that there should be something in place to prevent unprofessional voice actors from running rampant.

Re: NOA Announces Coming Restock of Old amiibo

Hamguar

Good stuff! I may think about getting the 'Mons as I was fortunate to procure the others initially. Personally, I'm hoping for a second crack at the last three Fire Emblem characters. Derped out hard on Ike, and I didn't even get a ghost of a chance for Robin and Lucina.

Re: Talking Point: Star Fox Zero's Delay Could Be The Final Nail In The Wii U's Coffin

Hamguar

Frankly wasn't even concerned with SFZero. My go to holiday game is XCX and even then I still have a log of games both Wii U and 3DS I have yet to play.

Honestly shy of binge playing, as I have a family to provide for nowadays, I've been hammering at all the games I've gotten and still have more to play/buy are people really that starved for games?

That is a genuine question as I don't qualify myself as a good gauge seeing that with Monster hunter alone I have logged thousands of hours and also keep busy with replaying older games as well. Heck this is the first Gen that I have not even completed some games 100%. I can understand being eager to play the newest and greatest iteration of Star Yoshi Prime Maker, but to say there's nothing to play and it is drought central has always seemed a bit extreme to me, it feels like people play a game for a weekend then toss it to the wind.

In all fairness, intellect takes a back seat in the matters of the heart. I've seen ivy leaguers reduced to incoherent piles of piss and rage in big emotional situations. It's why most advise people to never make big decisions under any emotional stress, positive or negative.

Re: Say Hello To What Could Be The Most Obscure Piece Of Nintendo Hardware Ever Made

Hamguar

At least it's not like the auto industry, always try to learn from a mechanic friend of mine when he comes to fix up my car and most questions are on the lines of why is this plastic or why isn't this metal and the answers are more often than naught, simply so they breakdown faster. You may be surprised how often this ploy is in effect in many industries.

Re: Weirdness: A Mighty No. 9 Live-Action Movie is On the Way

Hamguar

Granted there's no concrete evidence for this but I get the feeling that Inafune is being driven more by spite for Capcom than anything else. If so, it will be the end of him. It's one thing to show Capcom that there is a market for it's beloved IPs but this nonsense is something else entirely.

Re: Disney Infinity Producer Brands amiibo Stock Shortages "Irresponsible And Rude"

Hamguar

Obvious response of the competition, that said, something really should be done. I went to preorder the Lucina amiibo at amazon per usual and I wasn't even able to see it load up let alone put it in the cart to order. And that was even with me F5ing like it was my job for 30min.

Although we wouldn't be in such a mess if we didn't have so many Nintendo fans caving into the scalper prices thus creating this market of ridiculousness. But then again, good luck organizing everyone to boycott scalpers.

Re: Rumour: GameStop No Longer Taking amiibo Preorders, Limiting Sales To One Figure Per Person

Hamguar

@Tsurii897
Hind sight is 20/20 plus given that everything at a corporate level is glacial for obvious reasons and that they had to overhaul their systems. This actually would be around the time something like this would be put into effect. No one thought Amiibo would get this crazily out of hand from the beginning nor that consumers would pay such asinine prices for them rather than refusing to pay more than the MSRP thus continuing to encourage scalpers to buy them up for greater profit. Big thing is I'm glad that they are actually doing something about it. Now if Nintendo would start restocking appropriately along with this we'll get somewhere.
