Sega and Nintendo have just confirmed another entry in the Sonic Boom video games series, this time exclusive to the 3DS.
Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice - like its 3DS forerunner Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal - is being developed by Sanzaru Games. Nintendo will be handling distribution duties.
The game is based on the Sonic Boom TV series and introduces a new bad guy in the shape of D-Fekt.
Here's the full PR:
Nintendo of Europe and SEGA of Europe have today confirmed that they have entered into a new distribution agreement for the forthcoming Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice scheduled to release exclusively for the Nintendo 3DS family of systems across Europe this Winter. Under the terms of the agreement Nintendo of Europe will be responsible for the sales, marketing and distribution of the game throughout European territories, with SEGA of Europe remaining as publisher.
The iconic 'blue blur,' Sonic the Hedgehog, will be racing once again in Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice as the game introduces more adventure, speed, exploration, and an all-new fire and ice gameplay element that will help propel the action. The game will also feature the triumphant return of Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy and Sticks.
Developed by Sanzaru Games Inc., Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice is a single player game with collaborative gameplay components that shares key characters, events, and lore of the Sonic Boom universe.
Players will see Sonic and his friends in familiar settings as they embark on a brand new adventure to battle Dr. Eggman as well as an all-new super villain, D-Fekt. The team's adventures will bring them to locations both familiar and new as they explore, race and protect their world.
To create an entirely new experience, Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice will infuse fire and ice elements throughout gameplay, enabling new abilities to play out in special character moves and interactions with environments. The new title also delivers gameplay that enables players to run through the game at top speed, or take their time with deeper exploration and puzzle play.
New to the title is the introduction of Bot Racing, a supplemental game tied to the single player story with multiplayer gameplay. The new Bot Racing feature is an extension of Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice that is purely about racing and speed, where a user will unlock character themed Bots to challenge friends on fast courses or tracks.

Why didn't they start a new name? Surely people wont trust the name Sonic Boom.
D-Fekt, as in the word Defect? Wow, I'm sensing a lot of references to the Wii U version.
@DThrow_UAir The Sonic Boom cartoon is successful, hence keeping the name, character designs and logo. My little boy loves the cartoon, and so wants games of that.
...seriously?
Man a lot of people aren't even giving this game a chance. The Wii U version was terrible, HOWEVER, if you actually played the 3DS version, it was really fun. It was a mixture between Metroid, and a classic 2D sonic game. I'll only reply to people who actually played both sonic booms if they want to criticize my opinion, but the people who haven't touched one, just don't reply
...
Really SEGA? You're continuing with the Boom series? Boom's a failure, just let it die already.
The first 3DS one was the most boring metroidvania game I've ever played.
I like the show (and felt okay with Rise of Lyric before taking it back to GameStop, but skipped Shattered Crystal), but this is a no-buy for me.
This is... interesting. Also somewhat brave of them — it'll be difficult to revive whatever hype the two previous Sonic Boom games had before people realized that they were broken.
Unless this gets really good reviews, I probably won't bother.
O.O O.O O.O
Seriously, my jaw dropped when I saw this. SONIC BOOM?!
...
Well, let's hope this is more decent than its predecessor...
Sega, please....just stop...
Why is everyone acting so hostile towards this? I've heard okay to good things about Sonic Boom on the 3DS, and good things about the TV show. It was only the Wii U version that was a broken mess, and this new game is for the 3DS, not the Wii U.
The 3DS version suffered I thought because of how poor the Wii U version was. I actually found the 3DS title pretty fun. I'm hopeful this improves upon that.
I'd still rather have Sonic Adventure 3 on Wii U though.
I don't think Wii U will be missing out on this, really. Rise of Lyric was an awful mess.
SEGA, please stop milking Sonic. You just killed the cow last year.
Just PLEASE tell me you spend a lot more time on making this. It's the only thing you need to do to better the first 2 games.
Wonder what Sonic Team are working on for that matter....
NO! Who is buying this masterpiece! Is sonic on the WiiU and 3ds even making Sega any money in return at all?
Sonic needs a 5 to 10 year break, end of.
Will get this game for my son. He loves Sonic. We never got the Wii U version so I will judge this based on Sonic Boom 3DS.
On the bright side, they won't need to reveal/include this on the digital event, Smash DLC is also out of the way, and those games included on the Micro Direct etc.
I think I'll get Shattered Crystal when it goes on sale.
I'll give this a chance cause i played the 3DS version of Sonic Boom and that was at least decent. So i'll wait and see before i say anything.
Man, dude... stop.
The 3DS version is just............ok, not great but not bad either but it has hints of a great game underneath it's okeyness.....
This would be interesting to watch out for.
Here we go again...
Different developer than the Wii U mess, and the cartoon seems to be doing well. It'll do fine.
i kinda like the 3ds demo version but i hate the wii u demo version due to boring fighting feature(never own the full version of the wii u and 3ds version). i might get sonic boom fire and ice when the review is good
Why? Why? Why?
Why not just make another good game like Colors or Generations? Why?
Do we really need that many Sonic characters? Shesh.
@outburst Which leaves a whole hour for Splatoon
LOL
The 3ds version was quite lackluster, albeit playable (compared the drivel the WiiU got).
Very skeptical about this.
@Grumblevolcano
Okay I changed my mind.
Stop...just stop Sega...
The first Sonic Boom for 3DS was metroidvania style? What?! That's all I needed to hear- I'm going to check this out right now...
Oh no. Please, for the sake of Sonic fans, make a Sonic game that has the original design with the gameplay similar to generations.
Shattered Crystal's demo felt long and somewhat slow. Was the whole game like that? It wasn't bad, but nowhere near as good as something like Rush Adventure.
This doesn't look too bad, looks mediocre but has potential to be good, Rise of Lyric just gave Sonic Boom a bad name though.
One thing I admire about the Sonic franchise is good or bad, it keeps moving forward with something new and not relying on re-release/remakes of older games (looks at Megaman). Starting to get harder to find in this gaming era.
In any case I hope it's a step up from the last one. Shame about not having a Wiiu version to correct their past mistakes, but with haters and burnt victims, I kind of see why.
@Jason723 I'm not sure. The Wii U one was garbage, the 3DS version might have been better than the Wii U version, but still nothing outstanding or good from what I've heard.
It's probable the TV-show that keeps this thing going.
Oh dear God, NO! Sega why?
I get that the cartoon series is doing well, but the first two games didn't... not even close!
I so hope this isn't one of those surprises that Nintendo have been saying we'll get at E3 next week. That would ruin the direct for me.
They just won't give up, won't they?
Unless this has something to do with Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen I will be passing.
So this is what they have been working on instead of a new Sly game?
@nostalgianinja Ummm... how does the word defect connect with Wii U? It's not selling well, that doesn't mean it is defective.
Sonic Generations filled my need for one last modern Sonic game...
Now watch as other consoles get an actual Sonic game, like the PS3/X360/PC version of Sonic Generations (and not, by any means, the 3DS version).
YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSS
THIS IS THE BEST THING I'VE HEARD ALL DAY
Youve got to be kidding me....really ? Has the world gone mad or something ?
We establiches it before, but i thing i have to reorganise my list of stupid developers...
This is corporate suicide by prescription. Is Sega banking on sales in countries like Narnia ? Because im pretty sure that on this planet, the Boom IP is nothing more then an absolute laughingstock.
Thats one way of burning money...
And @AlexSora89, it doesnt really matter. At this point in time, its all going to be dung. The entire IP is muddled, its reputation in shambles.
And lets face it, brain cells dont grow on trees, and Segas CEOs need a whole truckload. Theyve undergone a lobotomy years ago and wont decide to make the definitive Sonic game over night. Wont happen.
ZZZZZZzzzzz. This ends the deal right? can the other consoles have Sonic now?
I don't get why people are so mad. The target audience are the kids who enjoy the TV show.
There won't be Sonic games on home consoles anymore because it isn't worth the cost. No one at Sega make games anymore. Everything is outsourced. Sega is now an empty shell. It's time to accept reality.
Saw a trailer of it......nah no buy for me
@Zeldamaster97
He was referring to Rise Of Lyric.
@Einherjar
The key to the definitive Sonic game is a straightforward one, such as Generations. Unfortunately, they always look for gimmicks instead.
@Einherjar
I thought Generations was the definitive Sonic game? From now on, it will just be poorly made Mario wannabes and tie-ins... accept it, move on, and play Generations if you want a Sonic fix...
The same thing would happen to Mario if Nintendo ran itself into the ground.
@Zeldamaster97 The Wii U version of the game was a complete and utter mess. Glitches, Bugs and exploits to be found in the game (probably so even after the patches too). The 3DS version was clunky and hard to control, but at least it wasn't as much of a mess as what the Wii U version was
Don't defend the Wii U version of Sonic Boom, Defend the Wii U itself. Doesn't help that BRB had to deal with development issues and little to no support from Sonic Team, and that the engine that Sonic Boom Wii U was made on was not specifically optimized for the Wii U at that point, so clunky controls, jerky gameplay and difficult movement kind of was a misnomer for the game in the long run.
I can't believe this isn't a joke, smh.
I didn't have a problem with shattered crystals except the speed. If they fix that I'll look into it
@TheAceofMystery i was thinking exactly the same thing. people want to be so quick to bash something before actually giving the game a chance.
Ugh.
PFFFFAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!
Well, at least it isn't a sequel to the Wii U games, guys.
...
This optimism is making me dead inside.
Sonic Boom: Generic and Trashy would be the accurate title for this game.
@brucelebnd this is made by the same dev under the same branding in a rather short development cycle. Their isn't much reason to give it a chance,
Oh great, another Sonic game to avoid like the plague. let's all prove to SEGA that we all want quality and not crap-on-crap, lets not buy their horid products.
Just admit it Sega, the series is Fekt.
@Pikachupwnage sonic boom for 3ds isn't the same as the wii u game. the 3ds game is pretty fun. Sanzaru Games isn't Big Red Button. from the looks of the trailer it seems the game will have basically the same mechanics with a few new added elements. I think it will be just as good as shattered crystals
@Dezzy Good pun. So obviously Shattered Crystal must have been popular sales wise, right? Or the cartoon is popular enough.
you know sega doesn't make sonic games for us, their target audience is 12 and under.
http://kotaku.com/5336675/sega-impossible-to-please-all-sonic-fans-with-one-sonic-game
Boring, I'd rather play Sonic 06, at least that game is entertaining despite it's glitchy interior.
@brucelebnd I don't think my 12 year old self would have enjoyed either of the Sonic Boom titles though. He certainly didn't enjoy Sonic 06. I'd love it if they made a game which is like the daytime sections of Sonic Unleashed, they were great levels.
Looking at the trailer, it looks to me like they're taking a mechanic that would in better games be the mechanic of maybe 1 or two stages or maybe just one world, and stretching out into a whole game. It looks like the fire and ice thing will get boring after the first few levels and beyond that be a completr drag, with perhaps some better ideas sprinkled in for the boss fights. That's my objective opinion after having had my laugh
I'm sensing a Game of Thrones crossover...
SIGH WHY SEGA........WHY?!?!
@Goob Sonic Boom appears to be a tv show and so SEGA is not ignorant of the show's popularity, never mind that the previous instalment wasn't too great for some people.
The show's popularity will bolster the game's success whether it's a great game, or not.
It just makes you wonder....whatever happened to modern Sonic?
This trainwreck oughta be fun to see.
LOLOLOOLOLOOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL...
@IrishGamer97 i don't know what to say, the closest thing to that might be sonic rush for andriod/ios
It's hilarious that the Nintendo fanbase assume the game is terrible when the game hasn't released yet. It proves that the Nintendo fanbase can't give second thoughts.
this will do better in the UK now Cartoon network is showing the damn cartoon
@Artwark Er.... Sonic Mach 2 is a thing. It could be modern Sonic.
Until i see an 7-10/10 i'm not planning on getting it.. ugh
@holygeez03 Yup, pretty much the same advice i give people all the time.
Genesis games, Adventure 1/2, Generations, maybe Unleased if you can tolerate the brawler parts. Colors is ok too, just nothing all too special.
And i highly doubt that Nintendo will ever fall so low. It would be a real effort for them to reach Segas level.
They must have a lot of confidence in how good this game is to name it Sonic Boom anything, and even better for Nintendo to invest in publishing it after the original Boom fiasco.
On the bright side, I couldn't possibly imagine expectations for a game being any lower than for this, so it will almost certainly exceed expectations
I give them credit for trying again after the horrendous previous attempts at video games for the cartoon. The show is alright for what i've seen but much rather get a brand new entry on Wii U, why do we need all these side projects? Speaking of Sanzaru where is the next Sly Cooper?
drops onto knees
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!
Why isnt this sanic adventure three!!!!!
These comments lol
I'm pretty skeptical and I probably won't pick it up because I still got a lot of games I need to buy like Code Name Steam and Bayonetta 2.
Seriously? Were the first two successful enough to keep making them?
Even if this is good, nobody's going to buy a video game with the words "Sonic Boom" in it. But the show is fantastic
The Wii U game was ok, but the 3ds game was way better, so this could be pretty good. I do live me some sonic, but we really need a true sonic game again! (Last one I cared about was lost world)
Wait... Does this means the 3DS one was successful ? WTF ?
There is 2% chanse of me actualy purchasing this.
I'm kind of glad the Boom sub-series is continuing. Both the TV show and the comic (which is actually ending, itself) are pretty good.
Methinks this would have been a more fitting song for the announcement trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YCBjfoOsm_E
In all seriousness, though, I'm skeptical this will turn out well. The only saving grace that the Boom series has is the cartoon. Who knows, though! Maybe Sanzaru Games will surprise us and make something at the very least comparable to the Sly game they worked on a few years back.
@Einherjar I would debate you on your assessment of the Sonic series if I weren't in 90% agreement. But as a diehard Sonic fan, I'm still tempted to debate the remaining 10%!
They completely ruined knuckle's character design, in my opinion.
Yeah I'm not buying it. I gave up on the handheld games after Lost World, I'd rather just buy the console equivalent. But anything in the Boom series, handheld or home console, I'm not touching unless it gets amazing reviews. And I mean at least 9 or 10s from multiple sites.
I'm not sure if I'd buy this with Sonic Boom in the title...let's just see how this goes.
I only played the demo for Shattered Crystals (the last 3DS Boom game). While I won't jump right on the "Sonic Boom Suxz" bandwagon I wasn't a huge fan. The levels seemed too long and confusing, the Lost World on the other hand, it was...differnt, but enjoyable (which reminds me I need to pick that one up....price is finally plummeting to a decent enough price). I'll keep an eye on this maybe wait until mid or late 2016 to pick it up...and of course keep an eye on the reviews.
first the second new harvest moon, now this.... aye
@Dr_Corndog I may not be a die hard fan, but i do own multiple copys of every game (collector) and i have played them all.
And im someone, who loves the occasional bad game (looking at you MegaMan X6/X7) but if Sega produces a bad game, they are bad
And thats the biggest issue here.
Were not talking about bad design, gimicks that didnt work out or such things, were taking about games that simply dont work.
Like i said, Unleashed was, technically, a good game. It was just not what people expected from the franchise.
If you get the game because youre a fan of platformers and you get to play a brawler, disappointment is inevitable.
But games like 06, Boom and the many handheld iterations that are simply riddled with bugs and errors, there is no way to defend them anymore.
And thats the issue here, the IP itself is tainted. Its reputation is so bad, that you cant even expect high sales with a quality title, especially with the Boom license in tow.
No person will seriously consider getting this game after having layed the WiiU version, no matter if Fire&Ice is good or bad.
And thats really the reason why i say: Dont support Sega when it comes to Sonic anymore. Enjoy the quality titles from the past, ignore everything else.
They have to learn it the hard way and bury Sonic for a couple of years.
Promote it with proper rereleases of the classics, try to rebuild its reputatiuon and then start anew.
@TheAceofMystery
I completely agree. The Wii U version was terrible, (but somehow managed to beat it.) but I had so much fun with the 3DS version, I took the time to 100% it.
I don't know why so much people didn't like the 3DS version, I guess they were expecting actuall sonic.
More people should give this a chance. The inclusion of (more) boss battles makes this look better than the original 3DS version. (Not that the game was bad.)
sonic has been famous for being bad for a while until a couple of decent titles, then BOOOOOM! a contender for the worst game of all time, but didn't some people have fun with how bad it was? i wonder if they're hoping for that, sonic games always had a short time between announcement and release.
And just like that my hope that a sonic game will be good has been renewed. Ugh, If only Sonic wasn't my "childhood"
Oh jesus...
This could turn out to be a good game. I still need to try out Sonic Boom 3DS since that game looks like good fun. I have loved plenty of games that were completely trashed in reviews. This could be another one of those.
Like, who cares?
WELCOME TO SONIC TEAM WE MAKE GAMES I THINK
hey what a great way to publish a game. how about doing the same for these Dragon Quest titles.
Let's be honest, though: Sanzaru Games has the potential to make this game good. They've done so with other works in the past, and with luck on their side, won't have such a rushed production schedule this time.
So many idiots judging a game before it even comes out.
I don't know what you guys are talking about. THis trailer makes this game seems good
I predict this will be a good game,
As long as Sanzaru learned from its mistakes, then this will be acceptable.
Doesn't seem to be rushed in development this time, so lets hope for the best.
@fed0ra7 "what the f*** is a Sonic?" : p
I'm calling, This will be the game that literally kills sega
Seriously? . . . SERIOUSLY?
This is just as logical as releasing Hotel Mario 2 or Mario Is Still Missing.
Sonic 06 3D pls...
or superman 3D (you know superman 64?)
Sonic Boom is kind of sad if you ask me. I have yet to play the 1st one on 3DS. But this does look kind of cool though!
It could be decent.... I think... maybe...
@Bolt_Strike Except the cartoon isnt...
Terrible character designs aside, I'll wait to see if the game is anything like Sonic Rush before passing judgment. Not saying to be hyped for it, but saying to wait and see.
@brucelebnd I played the demo. I know. It was horribly boring and the game had mediocre reviews from critics.
Awesome! I really enjoyed Shattered Crystal so I'll definitely be getting this. Funny how most gamers these days don't know what a good side scrolling platformer is. Probably brought up on Playstations.
I don't think many people on here get that while the Sonic Boom games flopped, the TV show has proven very successful and is getting a second season. And from what I've read, the Sonic Boom TV show had gains in its timeslot compared to the shows that used to be there.
What do people expect Sega to do? Cancel the second season of Sonic Boom and trot out a game based on the Genesis Sonic games? I personally don't care about Sega's handling of Sonic since the Dreamcast. But I also at some point accepted that Sega is not trying to appeal to the older Sonic fans who first played the games on the Genesis.
As long as Sonic Boom draws in ratings, Sega will keep on pushing the series. For Sega, their goal is to turn Sonic Boom viewers into the fans of the games. Sega does not give two flips about putting out a quality game anymore with Sonic's name or even trying to appeal to the older fans.
I think Boom is Sega burning their bridges with the older fans and moving on without us. They want a new generation of Sonic fans, and the best way to do that is with something that is not connected to the older Sonic games.
Generations was Sega's parting gift to old Sonic fans. It was the send off before they went in a brand new direction with the series. I don't buy for a moment that Sonic Boom is simply another sub-series of Sonic like the storybook games were.
I honestly think Sonic Boom is going to be the main direction the series heads for at least several years. The entire thing about Sonic Team working on an unrelated Sonic game sounded like Sega having a safety net in case Boom failed in all forms.
But given the TV show was successful, Sega is pushing forward with the franchise.
SEGA with Sonic Boom is the same as Namco with Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures. They care less about simply selling games, and more about selling a media franchise to a new audience.
WTF? Amy isn't a new character!
So now they are going the Pokemon way?! I wonder if it will sell this time!
Aaaaand Sega is as incompetent as people thought they were.
@Henmii Sonic Boom will sell when Mother 3 is released outside of Japan.
The answer to the video's question is water and steam.
Here's my take on the scenario.
Q: What do you get when you mix fire with ice?
Me: Vapor?
Video: Sonic Boom!
Me: I'm pretty sure that's wro--
(gameplay ensues)
Me: FUUUUUUUU--
@Fazzie_Bear,
Wich is never I guess (I would have loved Mother 3 though).
Oh, it seems to be 1 game. When I saw the title, I thought they went the pokemon route.
