It's Wednesday, so you know what that means - we're at the half way point of another gruelling week! Actually, it means Media Create Japanese chart results, though it could also mean the first thing; in truth, the results are rather grisly this time for Nintendo, but considering its strong run over the past couple of months a quiet week was due.
There are a host of new releases on Sony systems, with Dragon Quest Builders - a blend of the storied franchise and Minecraft, in a sense - absolutely cleaning house on Vita, PS4 and to a lesser degree PS3. Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash does break up the DQ party in third place, however, which is a decent result. Unfortunately the glut of releases on Sony systems means the next title on Nintendo hardware is Monster Hunter X (Cross) in 9th place, while Hyrule Warriors Legends dropped to just 15,174 sales in its second week. Considering the fact that a number of evergreen Wii U and 3DS releases held the top five for quite some time it's little surprise that momentum has finally dropped away; results are below with lifetime sales in brackets.
- [PSV] Dragon Quest Builders (Square Enix, 01/28/16) – 178,016 (New)
- [PS4] Dragon Quest Builders (Square Enix, 01/28/16) – 141,369 (New)
- [Wii U] Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash (Nintendo, 01/28/16) – 55,331 (New)
- [PS3] Dragon Quest Builders (Square Enix, 01/28/16) – 53,154 (New)
- [PSV] Uta no Prince-sama Music 3 (Broccoli, 01/28/16) – 51,289 (New)
- [PS4] Yakuza: Kiwami (Sega, 01/21/16) – 20,260 (123,516)
- [PS4] Romance of the Three Kingdoms 13 (Koei Tecmo, 01/28/16) – 20,101 (New)
- [PS3] Yakuza: Kiwami (Sega, 01/21/16) – 17,591 (78,019)
- [3DS] Monster Hunter X (Cross) (Capcom, 11/27/15) – 17,023 (2,661,523)
- [PS3] TV Anime The Idolmaster: Cinderella Girls G4! Pack Vol. 8 (Bandai Namco, 01/28/16) – 15,720 (New)
- [PS3] Romance of the Three Kingdoms 13 (Koei Tecmo, 01/28/16) – 15,431 (New)
- [3DS] Hyrule Warriors Legends (Koei Tecmo, 01/21/16) – 15,174 (69,653)
- [Wii U] Splatoon (Nintendo, 05/28/15) – 13,256 (1,228,409)
- [PSV] The Asterisk War: The Academy City of the Water Houka Kenran (Bandai Namco, 01/28/16) – 12,436 (New)
- [3DS] Yo-kai Watch Busters: Red Cat Team / White Dog Squad (Level-5, 07/11/15) – 11,135 (2,183,566)
- [PSV] Minecraft: PlayStation Vita Edition (SCE, 03/19/15) – 10,733 (642,224)
- [3DS] Monster Strike (Mixi, 12/17/15) – 10,263 (779,754)
- [PS4] Just Cause 3 (Square Enix, 01/21/16) – 8,928 (42,588)
- [Wii U] Super Mario Maker (Nintendo, 09/10/15) – 7,865 (784,211)
- [PSV] Mobile Suit Gundam: Extreme VS Force (Bandai Namco, 12/23/15) – 7,429 (137,877)
Just like in software the hardware charts bring dominance for Sony's systems this time around, with the Vita nearly tripling its sales and PS4 enjoying a boost. The New 3DS LL (XL) is third despite a drop, though the new and old smaller models saw small increases; the Wii U, unfortunately, has continued to fall away with sales back into four figures. The results are below with last week's sales in brackets.
- PlayStation Vita – 45,114 (14,999)
- PlayStation 4 – 32,557 (24,441)
- New 3DS LL – 22,593 (31,452)
- Wii U – 8,931 (11,298)
- New 3DS – 4,978 (4,715)
- 3DS – 3,298 (2,813)
- PlayStation 3 – 1,993 (1,671)
- 3DS LL – 558 (697)
- Xbox One – 92 (52)
All told this wasn't a great week's results for Nintendo in Japan, but peaks and troughs are part of the market reality. We'll see how things shape up next week.

Doooomed!
@Splatburst
This is to be expected, with powerhouses such as TV Anime The Idolmaster: Cinderella Girls G4! Pack Vol. 8 one can weather the onslaught for only so long.
Slow week but still much stronger then last years January......at least for Wii U. Not sure what the Japanese release schedule looks like but I'm sure a few new games for the systems will help boost the numbers.
It's interesting that Japan got Mario Tennis so much later.
Why won't Nintendo just send an update out for that game ;-;
???? This was never gonna sell well. Stating how poorly it's sold versus the most successful hardware right now just seems irrelevant
I saw someone streaming Dragon Quest Builders on Twitch. It's just basically an anime version of Minecraft but it looks more exciting. There's more of a story to it with side quests. Hope it comes to the western market too. Overall, bad week for Nintendo 😭😭
Was Dragon Quest Builders the first game that was announced as an NX title, until it wasn't? I'm pretty sure it was something from Squenix, maybe it was the next mainline DQ game?
I think that Vita number proves once and for all that Japan and the west are very different markets, Vita is barley visible in NA, 45k hardware and 178k software in 1 week in January? It outsold the PS4, Wii U, PS3 (and Xbox One which doubled it's sales this week) put together.
TP HD, Pokken T, SFZ. Wii U should at least hit 5 digits again.
With Ys coming up, I bet that sales for the Vita will only get better.
But just wait, Nintendo will bring in more games that prove vita owners wrong! LOL!
@Gerbwmu The Wii U and 3DS seem to have a reasonable release schedule in Japan for the last couple of months. Leading up to April they'll get Mario & Sonic, Zelda: Twilight Princess HD, Pokkén Tournament, Star Fox Zero, Shin Megami Tensei IV: Final, Mega Man Legacy Collection, Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 3 with Monster Hunter Stories and Yo-kai Watch 3 coming later this Spring or Summer in Japan.
This chart proves that software does indeed sell hardware, something we've all known all along. The Wii U and 3DS lack the huge releases currently in Japan to drive sales, and their lower sales numbers reflect that. I believe with the games coming out over the course of the coming months that Nintendo will still have good weeks ahead in the region.
@Oubie If that's all, then I'd wager to say that's downright horrible.
Fortunately, there are a few niche releases over the next few months...
@rjejr It was the next main line DQ game. I've never heard of this DQ.
@TheWPCTraveler Well, it has been a lot worse in other years...this is just from Feb to April, except the last 2 games I mentioned. It's not the best release schedule but there are still games coming and a few I didn't mention.
@Spoony_Tech builders a dq spin off i think, not main line. i may have to retract it, but i'm sure it's just a spin off.
@kenrulei This is just a spin off here that I know but I was referring too Rjejr's comment about what the NX announcement was then retracted.
NX can't come soon enough now.
Amongst this onslaught of Minecraft: Dragon Quest Edition, Nintendo's only hope is... Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash?
Lord save them...
This is expected and has been like this for many years. Nintendo dominates the Holidays sales in Japan, while Sony dominates the first months of the start of the year. I don't know why this even is a news article.
It's been a while since Wii U drop to 4 digits. While some games obviously will bring Wii U back to 5 digits for a week or two, I'm not sure if they will have another driving force like Splatoon again.
@rjejr Yep, seeing the Vita as the best selling console and the best selling game being a Vita game is quite odd, I wonder now how Sony considers its handheld console...
Gotta love those evergreen titles.
Dragon Crack... Er I mean Quest... Continues to be a hot seller for Japan, as usual. Vita continues to do well, there; too bad it can't replicate the PSP's success elsewhere. But hey, that's all on Sony. It's amazing that Romance of the Three Kingdoms is up to 13 now... Remember that 3rd or 4th one on the SNES?
And yes.... ROFLMAO X-Boned numbers in Japan continue to impress with double digits.
Can't believe so much people bought a lazy Minecraft clone without online and sold 60 euros.
Let's hope it will tank in the west like Dragon Quest Heroes. Square-Enix deserve to be panned for that.
@rjejr The Vita has a vastly superior selection in Japan compared to everywhere else. This, combined with a densely packed population to make the best use of communication features, makes it an exponentially better deal for the Japanese than anyone else.
Wow, go Vita! I'd love it to make a comeback. Handheld gaming for the win.
@bitleman It sold well in Japan for the same reason that series like Call of Duty keeps selling well in the West, and especially the US, despite being the exact same thing every time.
An absolutely wonderful week for Vita! I hope that Toukiden 2's eventual release would push hardware sales even higher.
What I don't get is this....
Company. 2014. We have a new console which we will release in two years, towards the end of 2016.
Ok that means we don't have to bother about new games for the year leading up to the release.
The gamers can just wait in anticipation. They won't mind.
Is that how all companies operate when they have a new product being released?
@rjejr I'm pretty excited to see the Japanese charts in March. Dragon Quest Joker 3, Dark Souls 3, Star Ocean 5 and the next Yokai Watch game all release within days of each other. There's going to be a blood bath.
@kenrulei DQ Builders is pretty much a Minecraft clone.
@zool huh? 2014? I assume you mean the NX? Which was first talked about in Feb/Mar of 2015.
@Socar I probably would've gotten a Vita, to be honest...if there were games that interested me that weren't ports of an old game. I mean, sure, those games are portable now, but the 3DS is also portable and has great new games. At the same time, though, LOLing because of the Vita's downfall? Really m8?
@Yorumi The poor performance of the Vita is all on Sony. They launched with safe sequels and unimaginative, unambitious games and no one wanted it. They started getting away from that and suddenly they start making a few sales. If Sony had actually tried to sell the system I don't know if they would have managed 3DS numbers but I bet it wouldn't look as dire as it does now and customer happiness and confidence would probably be up too.
@Mister_Wu I think Sony sees the Vita as the reason PS4 came out in Nov in the west and then Feb in Japan. If Japan were the entire gaming world Vita and Wii U would be doing fine, but alas it's only a small part.
@faint Its Japan's version of March Madness. No love for Pokken Tournament? You figure the Japanese are burned out by the arcade version? That's my excuse for low 3DS sales of HWL, they already played it on Wii U.
@KingofSaiyans @Spoony_Tech Thank you gentleman, I think all the roman numerals melt my brain. And the NFL's too, no L this year, just plain old 50.
@PlywoodStick Do the Japanese even bother w/ those comunication features, they all seem to own smartphones? I know the games keep releasing for it which I assume drives it sales. At least half of which I've never heard of as they never seem to come west.
Oh I want DQ builders but I've already done my importing for the month.
@readyletsgo thought about.
Funny, Dragon Quest Heroes is a Koei Tecmo game. And one of (if not) the best Warriors games.
Call of Duty has 3 seperate publishers, meaning most of the games are in development for 20-28 months.
Maybe Nintendo should take more time.
Then we wouldn't get the perfunctory Mario Tennis with garbage online and 6 months of Splatoon updates, 14 months of Smash updates and junk games like Devil's Third and Fatal Frame.
Oh sorry, those aren't first party games. And Devil's Third took half a decade to be that horrendous.
Maybe the Vita does well because it has a better account system than the 3DS, games cost as much and look better, the system works with the PS4 and it's region free.
Oh and it doesn't look like it was made for 12 year olds.
This is exactly what Nintendo needs right now. A swift kick to remind them that, yes, you are competing with Sony. I'm rooting for the other guys right now, cause they're actually trying.
Nintendo seems content to wait things out and lean on their garbage toys to puff up their profit margins.
@rjejr pokken will do well but it doesn't release at quite the same time as the others. The next big Nintendo related release is going to be smt 4 final but that week in March with all of those titles is particularly significant.
@Yorumi For what it's worth, I definitely wanted a Vita because I mostly only have time for portable gaming and there's very little overlap between the games offered on it versus the 3DS, but the fact that it used overpriced proprietary memory cards put me off. Who knows though, I still think about getting one sometimes!
Maybe I'm in the minority because I don't hear anyone talking about the Vita, but I did get into a conversation about it at a store this morning so possibly some people are catching on...
Mario Tennis, bleh, I'll pass on that, so much wasted potential.
@bitleman
Indeed it is. Sony have left the Vita flapping in the breeze since early 2014. It hadn't sold particularly well but the way Sony have abandoned it compared to Nintendos support of the (similarly badly-selling) Wii U is very poor. Lovely hardware-Memory Card cost aside-but they've left it to just become an indie machine.
@Yorumi Thanks for the info! That's good to know! I notice they are a little cheaper than when it launched, but the big ones are still ridiculous compared to SD, but I guess if there's no need to upgrade to them then that's not too bad!
That Dragon Q domination. Not surprised at the Mario Tennis numbers tbh.
Is this the first time Splatoon has been out of the top 10? I can't recall any other instance I've seen it out of the Top 5-10 since its release.
@NoirUsernameHere
The Vita also has a lot of new games. Some of them are multi-platform, but some are also exclusive.
Don't forget the 3DS is also riddled with ports and remakes of old games. To be honest, the most enjoyable games on 3DS in my opinion are old games (Ace Combat Assault Horizon Legacy: a remake of Ace Combat 2, and Star Fox 64 3D).
I honestly feel that people only crap on Vita because they need something to crap on.
wish we could get some final fantasy in NA on the wii u virtual console. At least give us 1,2 and 3 (1,4, and 6)lol
@SanderEvers The reason for that is because the japanese consumer base are the pickiest in the world and what the XBOX One has doesn't appeal to them because they're japan.
Disappointing sales for Yakuza there.
@AVahne True, but there's none that interest me other than maybe a select few. And I said that the only thing I'm interested in on the Vita are ports, which I did forget that I saw some other games that I might look into if I ever grab a Vita used, but it isn't really important.
Also, at least I'm not one of the people saying "LOL THE VITA SUCKS BUY A REAL CONSOLE NOOB".
Wait, Mario Tennis hasn't come out in Japan until now? Why?
