We're massive fans of the work of Japan's legendary Studio Ghibli here at Nintendo Life, so we were pleasantly surprised when we saw footage of Naps Team's Baldo during today's Indie World showcase.
The action-adventure RPG looks like an anime movie you can play (where have we seen that before?) and promises to be full of "puzzles, intriguing gameplay mechanics and intricate dungeons to solve spread through a wide, interactive open world."
Baldo will be coming out first on Nintendo Switch as a timed console exclusive this summer.

Western Ni no Kuni.
Hopefully physical release in the future.
Wow, that is a nice looking game.
Looks as lovely as ever.
I hope the gameplay holds up.
Need more gameplay before I'm convinced. Ni no Kuni looks good too but I watched a friend play it and just wasn't sold.
Why is his name Baldo if he has hair?
The faces of the main boy & girl characters kind of feel "off" sort of, a little dopey looking to be honest.
Otherwise it looks fantastic, especially the environments. More indies like this, please.
This game is on my list for some time now, but somehow I totally forgot about it.
But this is great news, the best news of the Direct, because this game looks goooooood!!
@miitomobenji My thoughts exactly xD There is a distinct lack of bald characters so far.
That looks amazing. I can’t believe that was done by an Indie studio, wow.
Ni No Kuni was awesome, the art style gave it so much charm. Baldo looks great too, really hope the gameplay is solid. This one has some good potential.
@miitomobenji
Baldo is Italian name with meaning bold / brave
Really looking forward this.
This looks amazing. Will keep my eyes on this one.
Looks amazing. Think we'll support it just for the effort.
@Broosh @miitomobenji
Surely you noticed how the lead developer is VERY bald!
@Anti-Matter Baldo is German for banana.
@Octane
Really?
Banana in German = Banane
@Anti-Matter Are you sure about that?
Looking forward to this one.

I plan on getting it.
So basically Ni no Kuni, you know, the ACTUAL Ghibli game. Speaking of which, Baldo looks way too much like it, seems alright gameplay wise
Finally.. so happy 4 this.
@Anti-Matter Never trust a pink hippo.
@Pod I did not! It all makes sense!
@DockEllisD Yeah it's been AGES since it was announced. We needed a release date, and we finally got it! Yay! I really hope it plays as good as it looks.
Looks super pretty. I’m a sucker for a strong visual style, this is now on my radar!
best part of this was the bald developer. Baldo is the story of his life
Yeah this game looks really good like a mix of The Legend of Zelda and Ni No Kuni.
I was hoping they'd talk about it today! How can you go wrong when you marry zelda-like gameplay and ghibli art style?!?
This game looks amazing. Today's presentation didn't have much for me, bit this one stood out.
This is one game I am looking Going out for. Loved Ni No Kuni so would be up for this one.
This looks interesting. Is Ni No Kuni worth getting? was it patched? I'm aware there were issues at launch
Alongside the surprising amount of timed exclusive that Nintendo managed to snag - of all hardware manifacturers - this was easily the highlight of the Direct, although that's mostly my provincialism doing the talking in my stead.
The fact this came from Italy of all places had me beaming with pride. Even more so considering it came from Sicily, a region that's been given an undeserved bad reputation due to the continuous power the mob has over things down there.
My country's going through a rough period lately, so I'm all the more glad the surprising - and long overdue - emergence of made-in-Italy games is picking up steam. Slaps & Beans, Mario + Rabbids, Milanoir, forma.8, Detective Gallo, The Wardrobe, RedOut, and now this. Considering how backwards Italy is when it comes to video games, I'm honestly impressed by how things are turning out.
Ambitious to say the least. But it could be cool!
Also if you like Studio Ghibli, then you REALLY need to watch Somali and the Forest Spirit. Like right now.
This indie presentation was a bit more my speed compared to the December Indie World. Between this game, I am dead, last campfire, Exit the Gungeon, Blue Fire and that new SWERY joint I am very pleased.
I want it. Enough said.
Real man are baldo.
This game looks like itll be fun to explore and discover all sorts of fantastical wonders. i cant wait to play it.
Ahhhh...making fun of bald people! The last (socially) acceptable form of body shaming left; BRAVA @Pod, @miitomobenji, @Broosh, @TheNewButler, @bluesdance! That Developer’s shiny head will be remembered long after this games release (especially if it’s bad..)!
@CodyDogg I actually appreciate a good bald, I was just merely skeptical of the lack of baldness represented in a game with "Bald" in the title 😉
@Broosh, @TheNewButler
Ha, thanks; not at all! It’s a curious case to me, as controlling one’s hair Is just as ‘easy’ as controlling one’s skin tone, or (arguably, to some) one’s sexual preference. Persecution, historically, far less, I’m aware, but yet another interesting social double standard we all adhere to. My apologies for coming off too PC; intention was to not lose sight of possibly a great game due to the cheeky Baldo-bald guy coincidence...!
