Fishing tournaments have been part of the Animal Crossing series for a while, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons is no exception.
Today sees the first fishing tourney to come to the Switch game, with the aim being to hook as many fish as you can in 3 minutes. With the event now underway in New Horizons, it's the perfect time to get your fishing rod ready and buy a whole bunch of fish bait.
Of course, with the Animal Crossing Bunny Day event happening concurrently, you should be prepared for some mild annoyance as many of the 'fish' you'll hook will, in fact, be Water Eggs.

It‘s not about the biggest fish! It‘s about fishing the most fishes you can in 3 Minutes
And I fished just one annoying egg in 4 attempts, it‘s no big deal. Especially using baits seems to just affect real fishes.
Edit: The article has been corrected after my post without comment
This does highlight some issues such as those stupid eggs instead of fish and having to craft bait one at a time
I just got a fish wand from it. Pretty great prize, considering I don't have a regular star wand yet.
Who decided to overlap it with the Bunny Day event? All I'm getting are eggs!!!
Didn’t the update fixed that no Water eggs would be appearing during the tourney? I’ve participated three times and no water eggs today at all.
@carlos82 yes! The eggs I’m more okay with as they’re going away soon (though I do wish the bunny day event was shorter) but crafting multiple baits is incredibly tedious. The crafting issue also extends to crafting lots of a hot item, or crafting weeds into a leaf umbrella. I don’t even bother with the umbrella.
This is wiping out my fish bait stash. Is there any way to work out what the prizes are and how many points you have in total?
@ROBLOGNICK its basically 10 points per prize but you can't choose, I think its 13 items in total for a complete fishing set. After you've sold him your fish you ask him for a prize and he'll tell you how many points you've got if you have more than 10
@Glitchling78 all they need to add is being able to craft multiple items and at least in your house, being able to use materials that are in storage
Takes a short amount of time to farm 10 baits. Just head to an ocean with a stack of 10 once you start the tourney and you'll real in 9 or 10 fish in 3 minutes.
@carlos82 I hadn’t even thought about that, crafting using materials in storage would be great. Or if that’s too easy they could go the Stardew route of having a chest next to the crafting station which you can fill with common crafting materials like wood, stone and ore and the crafting station takes from there.
I'm in Australia so I've already finished the event. Grinding to 300 for the gold trophy takes a while. Biggest trap you can fall into is gathering clams and crafting bait between each round to catch as many fish as possible, it's really slow that way. What I ended up doing that was much faster was using three bait at the start and then using the last two minutes to walk around my beach and catch any fish and dig up any clams that I see and then I'd head back up to C.J. with about ten seconds to go, click through his dialogue and start the next round straight away. I'd just take a quick break to craft my bait and customise my rod and shovel so they don't break after like 4-5 rounds. Getting 6-7 fish per round with no downtime was much more time efficient than catching 9-10 and having to make a bunch of bait each time.
Wait, there’s bait?
Another tip would be to bring a friend to the tourney. You rack up points quicker and it's co-op!
@KIRO when you walk on the beach you'll see little jets of water squirting out, dig these up as they are clams and can be crafted into bait. Then just stand in one spot, throw your bait and reel the fish
Just hit 200 ponts and taking a brake. It took about 2 hours and 20 minutes. I did a load of prep yesterday for the event.
Just need to get the 300 point trophy now 😊
Got 300 point and fished out max 3 eggs. People are blowing this out of proportion.
PS didn't use any fish bait, averaging 6-7 catches per 3min round.
@carlos82 ah ha! Thanks very much!
So do you need 300 overall or do you need to save up 300 in one go. Ive had about 100 but i just used them all up lol
I really can’t get on with the new AC. Nintendo acting as gatekeepers to all the events with downloadable updates rather than hard coded ones, the mass online community applying pressure on players to rise up to the quality of others villages, it doesn’t feel like your own unique slice of paradise anymore but rather more of some sort of MMO. I like MMO’s (I’d happily burn through PSO or FFXIV during lockdown) but Animal Crossing is supposed to be a game without pressure and completely unstressful.
The final nail is crafting. Outside of Minecraft (where it’s the point) and FFVIII (which had it 10 years before most other RPGs) I despise it as a gameplay mechanic. It’s just a lazy way to fatten gameplay without putting the work in. Stopping every 5 minutes to kill a turtle on AC4? Not fun. Just let me buy the upgrades already.
I really hope they don’t put it in BOTW2
@RadioHedgeFund i kind of feel the same. I dont mind playing at my own pace or even people being way ahead of me with bigger and better villages as thats just part of the game and i can get to that stage myself eventually but i dont like feeling that im missing out on rare prizes because i cant be arsed to put 3 hours in to fishing which, with all the back tracking and listning to the same convo every 3 minutes becomes a tedious affair. Same with the bunny rare prize for crafting every recipe before the 12th.Some eggs i had 600 of(wood) but others i had only about 150 of (sky and rock) i just dont have the time to put in to the events. I ended up crafting all the egg gear i could and selling it all to the Nooks for a packet. I think i will just skip the events and concerntrate on just getting the 5 star town now which is proving hard enough as it is. Im still on 1 star 😂
@RadioHedgeFund I really can't say I've seen anyone pressuring others to try and match anyone else's village. I've seen people proudly showcase their islands and I see nothing wrong with that. If you (not you specifically) feel some kind of sense of inadequacy over someone else's island, then that's more a you problem and not the online community
As for crafting, I actually like the mechanic of it. I think it's fun discovering new recipes for new items. The aspect of crafting I don't like is having to craft your actual tools or at least there not being an option for unbreakable tools to work to. I do agree having to worry whether your axe is going to break at the next whack is not really fun or relaxing.
@Tokujo Ah the good old 'it didn't happen to me so there's nothing wrong'. In my first round I got 2 eggs.
@ilh i hooked loads of eggs and i only just made it past 100 points before i gave up. Probarbly about 15 eggs id say. Its defenately better than it was as id hook 8 eggs out of ever 10 casts.
Dang this sucks. Can't catch any break lately with this game, ha. )-:
First, I barely have any cherry blossom/Sakura items because Bunny Day being two weeks messed that up and the cherry blossom stuff ended yesterday.
Now I'm going to miss this fishing tournament because I'm not off work til 7p. :x
I miss town ordinances...
@carlos82 That would be a godsend...
Does anyone know if the points stack over the multiple fishing tourneys? Like do you have to get 300 points in this one tourney to get all the prizes, or can you just get some this tourney and more the next tourney like you have been able to in past games? Because there is no way I am going to spend the time getting 300 points today. I have better things to do with my life.
I kept playing until I started getting doubles. I assume that means I got all the rewards. It was fun and profitable. But the eggs tainted it...
There’s no way I’m even trying for 300. Lol. Too nice a day out. Do you actually “win” this thing?
@LetsGoSwitch
Use fish bait, I haven’t gotten a single egg that way.
@RadioHedgeFund
“ the mass online community applying pressure on players to rise up to the quality of others villages”
Sure, I’ve seen random people post on Twitter, showing off a bit of pride — but pressure?? What?? Like online Animal Crossing bullies?? Lmao. If those people really exist, block em / ignore them.
Play at your own pace, on your own time, and let it become your own creation. That’s the way you play — forget everyone else. Never forget, no matter what game it is, some people have wayyyyy too much free time. If you have a life (like most people) don’t feel bad if your village doesn’t have the same finesse as someone else.
Agreed about crafting though, but only for tools. To counter that, I have DIY stumps at a few key spots on my island. I like crafting everything else.
If you’re just not enjoying it, then don’t feel bad or waste your time with it. Life is too short, play something you enjoy.
today is my first dayof having the updated resident services center so i never received a notice about the tournament 😔 maybe next time
@BenAV Just a tip for the next tourney, your rod can't actually break while the timer is active so you don't have to worry about customizing/crafting new rods. You just have to be careful, though, because your rod will go down to the minimum durability and if you reel in a fish right when the timer ends it will break. But besides that there's nothing to worry about, you can get to 300 points without repairing once.
@Cynas Interesting, good to know. Just gotta repair shovels if you're digging up clams then. Although I did reel a fish in after the timer ran out a few times so it's probably for the best that I was occasionally repairing both anyway.
@MoonKnight7 I have been using fish bait and I still get them
@FineLerv I really don't know how you're managing that much on average. So many fish take several bites, or swim away from the pole real fast and make it hard to catch that many.
@LetsGoSwitch
Wow really?? I guess I was super lucky then. I did the tourney roughly 5 or 6 times and didn’t get a single egg. Good to know.
That really sucks then, they should have made it after Easter.
I hate to say it but New Horizons just isn't as fun as New Leaf.
Where's all the content?
I just spent hours getting the gold fishing trophy and still didn't get all the gear. It's an exercise in pure frustration.
And the music is completely forgettable.
@Moon you only needed 130 points to get all the gear, and items didn't repeat until you had all of them (although I understand that there are different fish prints, and each person can only get one style). So if you got 300 points you should have got all the gear.
Tip for next time, unless you've saved up a few hundred bait in advance, it's probably best not to waste time digging up clams, Although you might get less fish per try, you'll have more time, and you'll get the 2 bonus points more frequently.
@Moon I'm assuming you think you're missing the Marine Pop Floor. Don't worry, you don't actually get that item from the tourney even though countless websites say you can. You can buy the floor from Nook's shop, it'll randomly show up there sometimes.
Weird, I played for 1h today and no info about any fishing event I must be missing something, hmm...
This is my Animal Crossing game, which means no “pressure,” or expectations of anything beyond what I’ve got. I’m sure we will get more in due time. Enjoy the manna from the gods that was introduced in your life to distract you from the rona. Really.
First fish I got... was an egg 😑
Probably stupid Q since I live in a cave, but are there prerequisites for getting the events? I'm online and on version 1.1.4 (well, there was a 4 in the version nr), but still haven't finished all buildings for new people to move in. I need to get further before seeing events? The bunny visited a week ago or so however.
@shonenjump86 You should run around hunt for tiny shadow. I get min 3 - 5 each round. If it's 300 point max I only have 100 more to go and I will stop fishing. Never get sick of fishing in AC till now, lol!
@UnknownReader yeah, that was the best bet, going for the smaller fish. I also ended up using bait which helped a lot.
@Harmonie "I really don't know how you're managing that much on average".
This reply might come a little too late to make a difference, probably. But, what I did was talk to him with my net out, with my inventory cursor already hovering on a bait stack. Then talk to him and run straight down. All the way to the Southern beach. Facing south made a difference. Then press X, A, A, throw rod. Very smooth action. You should be in line with the fish. Only the eels were ever off centre so they killed the momentum.
Rinse and repeat.
The bare minimum was 8 fish each time. Average was 9.
Sorry for the late reply.
@UmbreonsPapa Yeah, item durability is the absolute worst aspect of any game that includes it. It wouldn't be so bad if the gold tools were unbreakable, but even THOSE break after a while. They take so long to unlock and then other than to score the Nook Mile achievements there's no reason to ever craft them again. What even is the point of gold tools if they break? They're just a waste of one of the game's rarest resources. Hopefully Nintendo will deal with this eventually, either introduce a new unbreakable class of tools or make the gold tools unbreakable. As it is there's no point to the tools breaking to begin with, it's just a petty annoyance.
Not everyone has all day to fish for 3 min constantly.
@Cynas thanks man!
@Damo
Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I think this only applies on the northern hemisphere.
Will the next tournament (likely) have the same swag and trophies? We got everything. Can I sleep in next time?
I'm hoping the fish print shirt is unique to every tourney, that'd be cool af
@Northwind I must be playing AC wrong. I don’t rush to unlock everything in the game, I don’t worry about getting every single item, I don’t grind for bells and I’m not too bothered that all the content isn't available out of the gate. I also don’t feel pressured to make my island conform to anybody else’s standard and I still have no FOMO. Am I doing it wrong?
@Northwind that is a good and fair answer. I’ve been enjoying the game so much and then I look online and see a lot of negativity beginning to grow around the game. I didn’t agree with a lot of the complaints but you’re right, there are lots if styles of play and mine is not the only one, so I can see why some might have concerns. I like to play AC over the long haul so if I missed some cherry blossom recipes this time, I’ll get them next year, no sweat, but I can see others being really frustrated that they didn’t get them all this time.
