Another week has come and gone as we tumble inexorably towards 2020, and this one gifted Nintendo a few choice gongs at The Game Awards and all 10 spots in the Japanese All-Format game charts. We also saw the announcement of a raft of indie titles as part of the Indie World Showcase, not to mention a brand new video game console coming next year which looks like two GameCubes duct-taped together according to the internet.
But now it's finally time to sit back and enjoy some game time. The Nintendo Life team have shared their plans below, and we'd love for you to get involved via the comments and poll sections as always. Enjoy!

This weekend I’ll be digging into Shovel Knight: King of Cards. Like all of the previous Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove expansions, this one is pushing my 2D platforming skills to the absolute limit. At the moment I’m stuck in the second segment of the game. The level itself is easy enough, but I keep making some rookie mistakes against the boss that result in an immediate restart each time.
When I’m in need of a break, I’ll probably spend some time in Pokémon catching a number of Shield exclusives for the one and only Ryan Craddock. He has a copy of Sword, so we're hoping to do a big trade at some point. I’m also looking forward to trying out the new Hori D-Pad Joy-Con I bought earlier this week on both of these games. That’s all for me!

This weekend, I fear I may find myself picking up Ring Fit Adventure as a way to work off all of the holiday meals and partying I’ve been indulging in. I have far too many friends who wish to hang out far too often, generally over far too much food and drink, and it’s beginning to show... We still have like 3 more weeks of this business, and it’s too cold & snowy to go run outside, so I’m thinking I’d better go get fit with that ring.

This weekend I'll be looking to polish off Gato Roboto. It's been a fun little Metroidvania so far and I'm eager to finish it up. I haven't got round to trying out the Master Sword item in Super Mario Maker 2 yet, so I'd also like to give that a whirl. The problem is I end up losing hours tinkering with level ideas but never actually finishing them, and the Master Sword is going to open up another whole world of possibilities.
Mind you, it's only a couple of weeks until Christmas. I should probably get cracking with some Christmas shopping too.

A package from the Far East arrived! Always exciting when these show up, reminding me of the simpler days of Super Famicom imports. Inside was Final Fantasy Twin Pack, Dusk Diver, LastFight (good news folks, it really is Power Stone 3! Bad news, I accidentally picked up the French version and the voices are locked. Sacre bleu!) and last but not least, my Game of The Week: SD Gundam G Generation Cross Rays - the first game of this long running, zany series that arrives on the Switch with full English text localisation. Now also add the non-import releases over this fine week like Jamestown+, Call of Juarez: Gunslinger plus the usual sessions of DAEMON X MACHINA and Astral Chain (the REAL action game of the year) and good luck trying to get me apart from my Switch these 48 hours.
As always, thanks for reading! Make sure to leave a vote in the poll above and a comment below with your gaming choices over the next few days...

Finished off A Hat in Time. Was originally pretty hesitant to pick it up due to the technical problems and whatnot but ended up giving it a chance and I enjoyed it a lot.
Now I’ve started Steins;Gate 0. It’s the one game that I’ve wanted to play more than any other for a while but I’ve been holding out for an English release on Switch. Very exciting to finally be able to get into it after it appeared on the eShop out of nowhere earlier this week.
Aside from that, just the usual stuff. Bit of Groove Coaster, bit of Risk of Rain 2, bit of Isaac, bit of Tetris 99.
@BenAV Steins;Gate was a lot of fun. I'm not sure what 0 changes though, I need to look into it.
I'm playing Digimon still. I've been at it for a while but work keeps me busy and I'm also trying to play Final. Fantasy 14
Definitely want to play more Astral Chain - I'm about to start chapter four. However, I've also become engrossed in Baba Is You. It's starting to get quite hard - I love a puzzle game that really forces you to think, rather than just react or recognise patterns. One of my games of the year.
Just finished the post game in Pkmn Sword. Good game! 8/10.
Was hoping to get my physical copy of FFVII/FFVIII before the weekend, but no...
So I'll continue with alternating between Dragon Quest VIII and Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright on the 3DS. Also got back to Travis Strikes Again, as the new trailer for NMH3 got me hyped.
This week I will be mostly playing
Sonic Gems Collection
Pokémon Platinum (+Diamond/Pearl)
Tetris 99 Grand Prix and some Minecraft for me. I'm quite busy sith other things this weekend, so I'm looking forward to some small sessions with these games in between!
@Kalmaro It's the sequel.
@Krull I never got around to finishing Baba Is You as it does get really hard and I ended up spending like an hour on puzzles. But I really love it too. Would have to be a contender for my favourite puzzle game ever.
@BenAV It is? I most have gotten confused I thought it was a remaster with added content. Now I need to check this out.
@Kalmaro You might be thinking of Steins;Gate Elite which released earlier in the year, which is a remake of the first game using the animated scenes from the anime. Steins;Gate 0 is (more or less) a sequel to Steins;Gate. Randomly appeared on the Switch eShop earlier this week, along with Steins;Gate: My Darling's Embrace.
Shovel Knight King of Cards and Splatoon 2 on Switch. On PS4 I'm working on Tales of Berseria and Dragon's Crown after wrapping up Ys IX in Japanese (hoping they announce western and Switch release soon!)
Tetris 99! I’m totally hooked all over again. Enjoy your weekend.
AC3 at moment. Definitely getting black flag again at some point. I’ll wait for discount on shovel knight I already have it on wiiu.
Shovel knight treasure trove latest update with the new games😀😀... Then children of morta.
@BenAV Whoops. Much appreciated, I'll have to take a look then, I just assumed everything was a remaster. Can't believe I've been missing out!
Call of Juarez is fantastic on Switch, with comic style graphics, arcadey gameplay and cheesy (the good kind) storytelling! Also, great port, plays like a charm on handheld!
Getting back into Enter the Gungeon, hitting the internet for tips to get better as I'm not very good! Brilliant game though. Also a bit of tetris 99 which I haven't played in an age, tiny bit of splatoon 2, and maybe some snes mario kart.
Bought collection of mana but might hold off for a while, don't really want to start any longish story type games since xenoblade chronicles 2 juat dominated so much of my time the last 2 or 3 months
More XB1 stuff, mostly Master Chief Collection and Gears 5. Any Switch time will be focused on DQXIS and Ori, I do hope that Ori 2 comes to Switch some day.
Sonic adventure 2 and new super lucky tale!
Pokemon + something else (DQXI + Control / PS4)
PS4 time !

I played The Sims 4 & Portal Knights on this weekend.
I'm done with all my games, so this weekend belongs to Netflix and prime. It will be cosy!
I'm gonna play trevor saves the universe, probably the funiest game I've ever played, and when I'm not playing that It'll probably be pokemon or shovel knight
Shield.
Smash.
And some diablo 3
Pokemon Sword
Tetris 99
Arcade Archives: Frogger
Still playing shield postgame - my ditto Barry is producing lots of competitive eggs! Also gonna try Kirby SNES with the kids.
With the Christmas-themed events going on, I'm going to try to play Paladins and Apex Legends on Switch and PC respectively. Had fun when I tried Apex's Winter Express mode, and had more fun with it than its usual battle royale mode.
May play some other games too, really want to get around to these two if things don't get too busy.
I'm going to check out the new Shovel Knight expansion and play some Mario Maker 2 Link levels. I also bought Rayman Legends in a sale a while ago and played it for the first time this week. It's so good! I regret not playing this earlier.
Among all the games I have and did not finished, reopened Super Daryl Delux recently. It's a fun weird beat'm up/rpg-ish game in an improbable school
Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove for switch, and Resident Evil 3 on my gamecube.
@LordVal I envy you. I will literally never clear my backlog.
I'll continue playing Zelda Twilight Princess (Wii). I'm about to enter the Twilight Palace, but I may first release the fairies by clearing The Cave of Trials in the Gerudo Desert.
On the third world of Yooka Laylee. I decided to give it a whirl after getting frustrated with Impossible Lair. It's not that Impossible Lair is bad, but this time of year has been hectic and taxing, and I really needed something more relaxing. I'm surprised at how much I'm enjoying the original!
My wife and I also finished Unravel 2 this week, and it's one of our favourite games that we played this year. After finding the original Unravel as a subpar experience, this was quite the surprise. We're now playing Super Chariot, which we grabbed on sale for 95% off in the Black Friday sale. It's got Unravel 2 vibes about staying connected to each other, so it feels like a natural game to gravitate to.
Finished up with Pokemon sword earlier in the week although I will be revisiting over Christmas to do max raids with my bro and fill in more of the Pokedex.
Back onto the Dragon quest Xis train. Into the post game content and it is fantastic so far. It is the game that keeps on giving.
Ooh! I actually have a fun answer this week!
I got Treasure Trove and I’m knocking out Shovel of Hope. It’s harder than I remember.
My Playasia package finally arrived as well! Including Oninaki and Dragon Quest 1-3, so I think I’m going to play the first Dragon Quest as secondary game (when I’m not playing Hat in Time, which I only play in TV mode)
I have a bit of a backlog on switch on the moment due to all the sales (and I am about 10h in onto Nino Kuni...) However after 120h on the Witcher 3 and only missing the second dlc pack I decided I have to give another shot at the original games so I removed the dust on my old laptop and praid to the gaming gods that it won't shut up from overheating and I have to say I am absolutely enjoying the Witcher (obviously an old game and way simpler but the character and the deep lore is there)
I will be playing Fire Emblem....
...
...
...
FATES. Birthright. I am then waiting on a pristine copy of Sacred Stones, which I will coin toss between that and Shadow Dragon. Then the other. After? Fates: Conquest, of course. After, do I replay Awakening or Echoes? So many good Fire Emblem options.
Dragon Quest XI S. Possibly the most charming game I've ever played.
@Patron I've been playing them all too! great games.
I'll also be playing Mario Maker but obviously no Mario levels!
@NotoriousWhiz Same. Giving it my best shot to get through as many as I can but a bit hard when I add to it pretty much every week.
Castlevania: Rondo of Blood on Wii VC
Kirby Super Star on SNES Online
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night on PS3 (provided I finish conquering Rondo of Blood)
And, of course, Rocket League on Switch
Still going strong in SSBU and Splatoon 2. Also, Golf Story is a priority after Sports Story's announcement.
Still waiting for my King of Cards update on 3DS. Anyone else?
I downloaded Sayonara Wild Hearts last night and played through the whole game. Absolutely stunning game, pity it's so short. But I want to go back and play for higher ranks today.
After that, some Darkest Dungeon and Dead Cells. I found the Ossuary in Dead Cells for the first time yesterday, not clear how I have never encountered it before!
@NotoriousWhiz second time for me since the Switch is out. But I fear it won't last...
A little of snes+nes online games. But mostly king of cards, smm2, and stick of truth
Shovel Knight - King of Cards
Shovel Knight - Showdown
Death Stranding
One of these things is not like the others.
Yo, is anybody else deeply obsessed with Joustus in Shovel Knight? I want more!
I recently hit the big turning point in Dragon Quest XI’s story and I’m completely hooked. Any spare time I can conjure this weekend will be spent on that game.
@JasmineDragon I also downloaded Sayonara Wild Hearts and played start to finish last night. Weird.
Great game!
SMT4 on 2DS XL and Tokyo Mirage Sessions on WiiU. Also some Halo 5 multiplayer.
I spent an hour or so, playing a classic called Qix, earlier this morning. As for later on today (and tomorrow most likely), I'll be doing the Pokemon Go Community Day(s) event, mostly to stock up on candy.
I also plan on finding the time to play one of the new (but old) games added to the NES/SNES apps. Most likely either Crystalis, or Journey to Silius (though I do want to play Breath of Fire II, at some point as well).
Paper mario colour splash.
Super Mario/link maker 2
the switcher ....the graphics are tough but the game is fun
...and mario maker 2
does anyone have a suggestion for some good zelda style levels?
Briquid Mini (Windows Phone) - Pretty boring tbh.
3D Brick Breaker Revolution (Windows Phone) - Still my favourite time killer atm.
UNO & Friends (Windows Phone) - Found another offline workaround.
Reset SK before the dlc playing through all the campaigns. Also started a Hollow Knight file from scratch a few days ago.
I am redownloading all my games because I got a larger sd card. One game I am playing again is A Robot named named fight. I played a couple more runs and had gotten into the 20s and bam unlocked 4 new game locations. So much content in this game.
Tetris 99, Mario's Picross, Smash tourney mode and Pokémon Sword.
Am wanting to play Mario Maker 2 after the video above.
I am working on Mario and Rabbids Kingdom Battle which I am trying to finish before Christmas since Luigi Mansion 3 and Dragon Quest XI will be entering my family of games. Other than that I might try and finish off Ghost and Goblins on SNES online or play a few levels in Mario Maker 2.
Edit: I meant Super Ghouls and Ghosts for SNES online. Not sure why I had Ghosts and Goblins in my head.
I’m hooked on Ashen right now, not on the same scale as BOTW but the feeling of exploration is there.
I'll be playing through some Shovel Knight, Octopath Traveler, Gensou SkyDrift, and others.
I'm playing Pokemon Ultra Moon.
I'll be playing more Monster Hunter Stories this weekend - man is it easy to get sidetracked in this game - as well as starting a different game on my SNES Classic. I finished Super Metroid, so I think I'll jump into A Link to the Past next.
As Niantic's year-end Community Day is running this weekend, I'll also be out stretching my legs and catching a few 'Mon in Pokemon Go at different points.
Have a great weekend!
I accidentally deleted my save data for Shield, so I'll be starting that back up again. Be making some more progress on the Nitro Bar in CTR, and I'm debating between Odyssey or BOTW.
Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle and Battlefront II seem to be getting their fair share of my time at the moment.
Once I can afford it, Shovel Knight!
@GregamanX that’s great dude!
I think the original Yooka Laylee is unnecessarily hated. But the first three worlds are pure magic.
I did fall off a little in world 4 and 5, but I’m excited to hear your thoughts!
Finally downloaded NBA2K19 after picking it up last summer during that crazy sale (I think it was $5). This game is insane. It really feels like a full, uncompromised, console game in the palm of my hands.
I'll be getting serious with Bloodstained:RotN, Horizon Chase Turbo, and Celeste will be coming in the mail soon. Oh, almost forgot-- I've got new NES and SNES games to play, I got to check out Dauntless, and Blaster Master Zero 2 keeps staring at me lol. I'll find time for you somehow Batman: The Enemy Within...
King of Cards, Showdown, and Mortal Kombat 11 this weekend. Maybe some NES or Super Nintendo app if I have the spare time.
I'll finish Castlevania Aria of Sorrow soon. After that I really want to try Ori and the Blind Forest on Switch but I might take a little break from metroidvanias before playing it as I've also completed Symphony of the night this week.
I think I'll try Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus on my PS Vita, it's a PS2 gem I didn't have the chance to play when I was a child
Playing Celeste for the first time, really enjoying it. Also will probably go back to the FFX grind when my brain dies from the tricky platforming.
Picked up Heavy Burger, the Data East comp-ish thing, for its stellar 1.99 sale price. It's a hoot!
Super Smash Bros Ultimate
Tetris 99 has a new tournament.
pinball fx3, pga bowling, shovel knight showdown, on switch. resident evil 2 & injustice 2 on xbox
Home - Lone Echo (PC-VR)
On the GO - Masquerada Song and shadow (Switch)
Probably picking up Disco Elysium, see what all the fuss is about 🤔
I'm not sure what I'll be playing this weekend. I'm a bit shell shocked after experiencing the ending of Persona 3 last night (and the election result).
The busy run up to Christmas probably isn't the time to get invested in another long jrpg, even though there are a dozen in my backlog.
Maybe Link's Awakening would be a lighter choice. Or I might pick Persona Q2 back up. I stopped once the P3 characters joined, I realised I wanted to experience them properly first.
Playing Assassin's Creed Rebel Collection
I’ve been really into Akane lately, with a healthy dose of Dragon Ball FighterZ and top it off with some Asphalt 9 so I keep up my contributions to my clubs reputation.
Sooooo maaaanny games....
This weekend has so far been divided between Pokemon Shield, Ori and the Blind Forest, Hotline Miami, and Project Highrise. I stand corrected to my earlier sentence - Soooo maaanny GREAT games....
New Super Lucky's Tale. I'm on the third world right now, and I'm finding the game super fun. Probably also Bulletstorm and Link's Awakening. Maybe even Touryst if I can fit it in.
Friday the 13th, resident evil 5, some crash bandicoot
Mass amounts of Switcher 3!
@Tyranexx You have a great weekend too my Nintendo compadre!
I'm playing Hamsterdam on Switch. Stylish battle game which involves both hamsters a sense of reflexes. Super cool to play,. The best comparison would be Punch Out, only instead of a boxing match, it's with gangs of vermin. It's not nearly as hard as Punch Out though
Sadly my Switch has been not getting the attention I usually devote to it since I’ve been playing Xbox- if I’d known how much I’d love it I would have bought one sooner.
I recently opened up the Just Dance game I picked up during Black Friday sale to play with my almost 5 year old thinking it would be super fun to play together. She doesn’t like the dancing so much 😅but surprisingly my wife and I have been playing and the competition has been heating up. I can’t tell you how many times my kids have been smacked/ hip checked while running into our dancing space. Also that game is a workout!
I downloaded Star Ocean: First Departure R, which I may or may not dig into this weekend. I'm currently on my fifth playthrough of Fire Emblem: Three Houses and I'm kind of hooked again. And as usual, I'll probably play some Mario Maker 2 to wind down in the evening; I'm really digging the creative Link levels and the Christmas themed levels that have been populating the Popular tab.
Finished bloodstained during the week. Started playing dragon quest ix on the ds and unravel 2/gear club unlimited on the switch.
I've been waiting for Dauntless to come to the Switch, and it's really fun. I like that it's similar to Monster Hunter, but not as intense or as focused on pre-planning your hunt. It's easy to jump in for an hour or two to do some hunting. And it's free! And it's not one of these games that you feel you'll only get something out of it if you pay money. Although, I did buy a special bundle in the game. I wanted to support the devs, and I felt that I would have easily spent $30 on this game.
@NotoriousWhiz I agree. My backlog gives me anxiety sometimes.
King of cards first and foremost and then a bit of Witcher 3 and Grid Autosport. My daughter and I are also nearing the end of our Luigis Mansion 3 adventure and it has been a very enjoyable co-op experience Want more like this Nintendo!!
King of Cards all the way. I am in the second section of the map, and just loving this game. After I beat it, I may replay Shovel of Hope and the first 2 expansions. This entire package is easily one of my favorite games of all time.
Since I got Shovel Knight Treasure Trove, I've been working on unlocking all the feats in Shovel of Hope. My first playthrough was for "Hurry Up!," which I unlocked all but 5 feats after speeding my way through the game. My second playthrough was for "True Shovelry" and "Penny Pincher," and now I'm working on "Perfect Platformer" and "Impossible!," after which I'll play through one last time for "Again!"
Not sure if I'll play through King of Cards or try to unlock all the feats for Plague of Shadows next...
EDIT: Apparently, you can now earn feats in Custom Knight mode... Really wish I knew that before hand, cos even though I had little to no problems with "Hurry Up!," I was nervous the entire run. Having the Infinidagger or Rising Dagger would've helped me feel more at ease.
@gaga64 Excellent choice on Pokemon game. Sinnoh is one of the best regions, in my opinion, and is my personal favourite.
@Raccoonius cool. I’ve cleared 4 gyms so far, but I’ve gotta say that as yet it doesn’t seem all that distinct from the previous 3 regions.
Maybe it’s a side effect of playing multiple versions of each gen 1-4 game (usually in tandem with myself), but they’re starting to feel increasingly formulaic, and I know I’ve got plenty more of the series in my backlog to come.
And yet, literally 13 games in, I still need to regularly remind myself of what types are effective against Steel or Dark... And I just cannot be having with the beauty contests and Pokeathlons...
@Prof_Yoshtonics Thanks! It's been great so far, just kinda busy and flying by too fast.
Yeah, ff7 ...still.
It's a long game even on triple speed.
@gaga64 In the beginning half it doesn't feel very distinct, but I feel it comes into its own in the later half when everywhere is open to you. I felt like I was a trainer and really connected with my character in the northern parts of the region, being out in the wildness training my team.
They're all definitely formulaic, and I've done the same where I'll be playing 2-3 different Pokemon games at once in the past. It does get hard remembering what you did in which game because they're so similar, although the journal thing in DPPt is a nice little recap that helps to a degree.
I've been playing Pokemon for 20 years now and I'm still having to look at the type advantages/disadvantages too. Majority of them I can remember, but then they went and messed everything up with the addition of Fairy and changing the type of some of the little buggers. Pokeathlon was neat to a degree, but the beauty contests I can't be bothered with.
Luigi's Mansion. It's just so much fun. In a world of very miserable games it's great to play something that makes you laugh. I caught the Game Awards the other day and pretty much every game was based around some sombre nonsense. It made me realise why I turned my back on gaming for so long.
I’ve bought too many games since Black Friday. Beat Double Cross Friday night, playing Galaxy Champions TV, tried Robonauts since it was free, attempted Dauntless and decided it was a no-go, bought Shovel Knight Treasure Trove before the price hike, bought Hover while it had a big price cut, got Terrorhythm and Cadence of Hyrule on sale. Played a bit of all of this Friday and Saturday so far. Mug get play some Diablo and Astral Chain Sunday.
So just finished all main and side missions in Fate/Extella: The Umbral Star.
Had to use a guide to unlock Artoria, I mean seriously how would anyone know to do that.
Great game. Was gonna move onto Link next but think I’ll give the musou games a lil rest for the moment.
Onto DxM next.
Ended up playing Dauntless. It’s super fun!
PS4: CTR: Nitro Fueled
Switch: Pinball FX3, Rocket League
How is Shovel Knight Showdown?
I decided to give Anthem another go this weekend. There have been several additions since I last played. Time trials, seasonal quests and more enemies in freeplay mean there's more to do after the story ends.
Also continuing DQXI.
@Raccoonius Ah, good to know, cheers
I might yet pay a visit to my Shovel Knight progress as well (not that I'm anywhere close to extras like King of Cards yet), but overall this weekend has been mostly marked by a good few hours of Overcooked co-op, plus the freemium romps (including a 16 Gb Warframe redownload - intentionally entire this time on the devs' part, and I appreciate them sorting out the storage space yet again, but after the 20+ Gb I redownloaded literally last week, it was somewhat overwhelming😅), addressing the last missed quest in the lovable The World Next Door (looks like they CAN all be done in one playthrough after all; maybe I'll give it another run someday, but I'm more in the mood and market for a sequel now) and trying to likewise wrap up Bad Dream Coma.
@Krull F#cking oath. I have had to step away occasionally, but I keep coming back.
