The major news at this year's Game Awards for Nintendo fans was the reveal of Bravely Default II on the Switch. According to Square Enix, it's a successor to the original 3DS outing, even if Bravely Second: End Layer already exists.
In case you missed the news the first time around, this second entry (which is technically the third) in the series, is being produced by Team Asano (Bravely Default / Octopath Traveler) and includes music by Revo (the composer of Bravely Default).
Following the official trailer release at the annual awards show, Tomoya Asano himself took to Twitter with the following message (thanks for the translations, Siliconera):
We finally were able to announce it! For those who’ve been waiting all this time, I apologize, and I’d like to thank you. People reacted so loudly that all our staff are pumped up to work on this game.
And Revo shared a message on Nintendo's Japanese website after the big reveal:
To all fans, I’m back. I’m happy to be able to participate in this hakoniwa-style world again.
The graphics have kept that sort of warm, hand-crafted look, but in even beautiful graphics. For the music, in order to better represent the atmosphere, I’m tackling this task with all my courage.
The music used in the teaser trailer was grand orchestral music, but there are also band-style musical pieces that charges forward passionately, intricate traditional-sounding music pieces, and a wide range of music that may sound nostalgic, but also fresh at the same time.
I can only say that I hope you can play the game as soon as possible. Please look forward to it!
Bravely Default II will be exclusively released on the Nintendo Switch in 2020. Are you looking forward to this one? Did you play the first two games? Comment down below.

That is pretty nice. This definitely was the highlight of the show, at least as far as announcements are concerned! Surely gonna pick this one up, I already have the collectors editions of both previous games.
Yeah, will get this game. Liked the first BD (never played Second), also liked Octopath Traveler.
Probably the only announcement that interested me during TGA. Truth be told, I when I saw the Switch logo and then the Square Enix one, I immediately thought it was Kingdom Hearts 1.5, 2.5, and 2.8 coming to Switch
Hell blade 2 nuff said
day one purchase for me. I only played the first one. haven’t finished it tho. But the score and art design were memorable af
I'll definitely be picking this up. Loved the first two games.
I enjoyed the first, but I was unable to beat the 2nd as I thought the story was awful.
Say what you will about bravely default - but the music was extremely good. Insanely good.
The only announcement that made the show worth watching for me.
My big issues with Bravely Second were the reused cast, world, and the lack of Revo, and this sequel addresses all of that. So I'm sure I'll love it.
Totally missed this announcement - cool!
BD’s score was perfect, half cheesy half epic. Good news indeed!
I never played any of the games in this series but I'm more than willing to try it out due to the fact that I am a huge jrpg fan and a bona fide Square Enix fan. I'm truly enjoying the Nintendo switch this generation.
Yes I am getting this game for my Switch. This is just one game from my list that I plan on getting for my system in 2020 after I get Wargroove for Christmas.
Can’t wait! I really enjoyed the first 2.
The first 2 were perhaps my favourite 3DS games. Definitely stoked by this announcement. It’s tempting to brush the dust off the old handheld to be honest.
Totally hyped for this one! But I hope they port the others too
Awesome series. It rivals Final Fantasy to me. Super excited!
I'm excited, but I would have preferred a remaster of the previous 2 games for a start.
Kinda hoped they made characters a semi chibi version of Final Fantasy Zodiac Age since they are on stronger hardware. Like concept art proportions...
@CupidStunt second had a way better story and more interesting characters imo. First was massively ruined by the need to repeat every dungeon/boss not once, not twice, but four whole times. Ugh.
@Aurumonado Not as legendary as Octopath though
@Baker1000 Yes I hated that repition too, but I felt the main game was more boring in 2nd Layer. I did love in the first the repeat boss fights with 4 at a time, as the strategies involved were great, but it could have been more streamlined.
Can't wait for Bravely Second 2
you should play bravely default if you haven't every member of the party is a great character with strong motivations and the story hits every emotion, the games are really clever too.
Do you think guys we need to play the others (at least the first) to enjoy this one?
I haven't played them, the first because of what they said about the end, and the second because... well, it's a sequel lol.
Damnit! My backlog gets even bigger.
That's good to hear
The comeback of Revo for the OST was my favorite announcement about Bravely Default 2
I enjoyed the first one, but never got around to playing Second Layer. I don't think I will be playing this one even though I had some good memories with the first.
Would of been interested but, alas no gameplay was shown
I hope "Bravely Default II" is a place holder name. The original "Bravely Default" was a really dumb name. "Bravely Second: End Layer" is a truly awful name. They have the opportunity for a mind shatteringly terrible title for the third installment.
I liked the infrastructure of the first one, but damn if I didn’t go nuts redoing the last steps over and over. Really felt like 1/2 a game stretched out to make it work.
Unpopular opinion: The Bravely series completely and utterly sucks.
I was first in line to preorder the original and was so hyped for it as it seemed it was a true old school RPG which is where my roots are 100%. In this I was sorely disappointed. The major points being:
I could go on forever but I'll stop there. If you're excited, that's awesome. But meanwhile I'll be playing Chrono Trigger, FF6 - FF9, or Legend of Dragoon for my old school RPG fix, where exploration, variety, and story happen. They just don't make em like they used to.
Part of the charm of this game and the one before was the 3D. The backgrounds looked like a popup picture book.
@invictus4000
Counterpoint: being a portable game, BD made a bolder effort than most of streamlining the 'classic' jRPG experience. They basically stripped away anything they deemed superfluous: giving players control over random encounter rates, refilling HP/MP, auto-saving everywhere (even for each dungeon floor), eliminating town exploration as you mentioned, and doling out most of the story in that weird, stage-like perspective where everybody's just kinda on screen standing there talking at each other. I don't agree with all these features, personally, but it certainly made the game manageable in bite-sized chunks on-the-go.
