Re: N64 Recompiled Is Planning Its Best Year Yet In 2025

GamingFan4Lyf

These static decomp efforts have been incredible! I was very impressed with Majora’s Mask and how well it runs. It’s so cool that the game is “native”.

Really hoping the trend continues across all kinds of platforms.

I know there is a Symphony of the Night effort out there.

I am hoping that the work done on Sonic Unleashed paves roads for unlocking Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon from their X360 shackles, too!

Thankfully, my PC is strong enough to run any emulator out there, but using native code is so much better!

Re: Best Super Mario Games Of All Time

GamingFan4Lyf

I am just happy to have been around long enough to play these games as they came out.

I remember finally pulling off the infinite 1-UP trick in SMB and using that to finally beat the game as a kid.

I remember opening up SMB2 for Christmas and just being in awe of how different it was to the original.

I remember losing my mind with all the power-ups in SMB3. Plus, it was just chocked full of awesome stages - and really set the stage for all Mario games after that: Ghost Houses, Airship Stages, themed worlds, original power-ups, etc.

Super Mario World was just….next level stuff compared to all that came before it. That jump from NES to SNES was just conceivable at 10/11 years old. Getting all 96 exits was a major achievement and I remember laughing when the game transformed after the secret star levels.

I remember buying an N64 and Mario 64 with my own money and playing it daily until I got all 120 Stars. It was pure joy!

Pretty much every stage of my life has a new Mario game to go with it.

What a timeless series.

Re: Feature: Everything You Missed In The Switch 2 Mario Kart Reveal - Characters, Features, Easter Eggs

GamingFan4Lyf

@OorWullie At this point, it's almost like a signature style of Nintendo - it favors pixel precision over the softened look of TAA, I guess.

The thing is, if this thing has DLSS capabilities like it's rumored to have (being an Nvidia chipset), Nintendo doesn't even need to implement any common software-based anti-aliasing solution - just leverage Tensor cores to handle it (since DLSS is a form of anti-aliasing).

DLAA in PC looks incredible for games that can run native resolutions at 60+fps. For games that need to run at lower resolutions, DLSS also does an incredible job at anti-aliasing over TAA.

Re: New Patent Seemingly Confirms Nvidia 4K AI Upscaling For Switch 2

GamingFan4Lyf

@Ravenmaster Nintendo gave up on the hardware rat race after it made its most powerful console ever (Gamecube was an absolute beast of a machine for the time) and didn't move the needle in terms of hardware sales (mainly due to the fact Nintendo still wanted to keep "cartridge-like" load times and created the proprietary 1.5GB optical disc rather than use DVD).

Other than the Wii U, Nintendo has found much more success with budget hardware than pushing the cutting edge.

Re: New Patent Seemingly Confirms Nvidia 4K AI Upscaling For Switch 2

GamingFan4Lyf

Realistically, the Switch 2 only needs to improve in a couple of areas: CPU cores and speed, and more RAM for developers. The GPU will be more powerful simply via the passage of time.

So, it doesn't necessarily need to target resolutions beyond what the current Switch can handle as AI cores handle the final output resolution.

Re: Random: PlayStation's Astro Bot Director Pays Tribute To Mario And Nintendo In GOTY Speech

GamingFan4Lyf

I would say it's pretty hard for anyone in the gaming industry to not mention Nintendo as inspiration.

Nintendo changed the gaming industry and created some of the most memorable games ever. Even people who only play on PlayStation, Xbox, and/or PC probably still had played on a Nintendo system at some point.

If you think about it, Nintendo is the gatekeeper of gaming thanks to its focus on making many of its games available for all ages.

Heck, PlayStation probably wouldn't have even existed if Nintendo hadn't decided to partner with Sony back in '88 to make a disc drive for the SNES.

Re: Palworld Developer Details Patent Infringement Claims From Nintendo's Lawsuit

GamingFan4Lyf

@Anti-Matter Palworld's catching mechanic and animation is almost like frame-by-frame a copy of Pokemon.

The thing is, that wasn't necessarly patented until Nintendo basically had that particular mechanics amended after Palworld was released into an already existing patent Nintendo had back in 2021.

It now legally makes that added wording time travel to 2021 and therefore is now patent infringement.

It's legal, but incredibly shady of Nintendo.

It's also incredibly dangerous for the industry because how many "monster catcher" type games exist out there now?! I am sure Nintendo wasn't even the first to introduce riding the monsters you catch, either! Nintendo essentially patented an entire genre.

Heck, even Final Fantasy has had a similar mechanic using Greens to catch Chocobos and then riding them - Nintendo could feasibly never allow that mechanic to exist again due to the way this patent is worded.

Palworld was playing with fire, for sure, but this goes well beyond Palworld. It puts a ton of power in Nintendo's hands - and not the good kind.

Re: Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition Confirmed For Switch

GamingFan4Lyf

Xenoblade Chronicles X was fantastic - and actually the first Xenoblade Chronicles game I played.

So glad it's getting moved to Switch. I hope this means that there will be a sequel.

@Coalescence Since I have shared TV space, I played this game almost exclusively on the Gamepad. It shouldn't be that hard to translate to a more conventional style since it was pretty much already built into the game.

Re: Nintendo Patents Filed After Palworld's Release Suggest Lawsuit Prep Started Months Ago

GamingFan4Lyf

@easykiel "The benefit for the applicant (Nintendo here) is that maybe they wrote down a great idea, but didn't realise it was worth having legal protection for. Then someone else (Palworld) comes along later and puts that idea into practice. It's maybe not fair on Nintendo that they told the world about the idea first, and now Palworld are making money off it. So the divisional allows them to get protection for that eariler idea they've already told the world about."

I guess I run on the "tough luck" school of thinking. If you didn't think to patent it at the time and someone else uses it, then that's on you!

Better luck next time!
No participation trophy for you!

It's not fair to the applicant.
It's also not fair to the person using it because it wasn't illegal for someone else to use. It shouldn't retroactively become illegal because applicant didn't bother "owning it" the first time.

Now, any new product that comes AFTER addendum, I can get behind. But not anything before.

Re: Nintendo Patents Filed After Palworld's Release Suggest Lawsuit Prep Started Months Ago

GamingFan4Lyf

@anoyonmus Smart, but also incredible scummy!

Like, how can an addendum time warp?!

And what does this now mean for any other game out there with similar mechanics - but for developers who didn't "disrespect" Nintendo?

It should be that if any addendum is added, the date of the original Patent should get moved to date of addendum to prevent an addendum to be used as a weapon against another company.

Or the conditions of the addendum aren't legally binding until after the date they were approved for the original Patent.

Now maybe that's how Patent law works in other countries - as far as I know this is in Japan only - but this rollback thing just seems dirty.

Re: Nintendo Patents Filed After Palworld's Release Suggest Lawsuit Prep Started Months Ago

GamingFan4Lyf

@Serpenterror @Madao @easykiel

So, from my understanding of the video I watched regarding this - which my understanding could be wrong as it's complicated - the reason is because these mechanics are like addendums of an older patent.

And because those addendums were approved, they are now part of an older patent Nintendo already had on the books - as if they were always there to begin with!

Basically...exploiting patent law loopholes.

Re: Palworld's Japan Release On PS5 Delayed As Nintendo's Lawsuit Looms

GamingFan4Lyf

@8bit-Man Well, the good thing about games is that they can be changed with a patch.

It doesn't sound like much actually needs to change, though based on my understanding of the patent's wording. A model change here, an animation change there, a camera angle shift, and, boom, patent no longer infringed.

At the end of the day, Palworld isn't going anywhere and I sense things will get changed before court.

Re: Palworld's Japan Release On PS5 Delayed As Nintendo's Lawsuit Looms

GamingFan4Lyf

@8bit-Man I am not defending laziness. However, while Nintendo is in its right to defend what is theirs, there is no doubt that Nintendo sometimes takes things way further than most other companies when it comes to IP protection.

Where most other companies embrace fan projects, Nintendo will shut them down in a heartbeat - even though those fan projects are making no money. It is also incredibly dictator-ish with regards to YouTube streamers playing its games.

After seeing exactly what Nintendo was going after, it is a carbon copy of Pokemon. I understand where Nintendo is coming from. An animation change is about all that is necessary and Nintendo can't do a thing about it.

But is the animation really something that does any kind of harm to the financial success of Pokemon as a whole? No. Is anyone really going to confuse Palword with Pokemon? No.

People may prefer Palworld to Pokemon because it does things Pokemon doesn't, but that's the whole point of competition.

How many times has the "Akira bike slide" shot been used in film? Sure, no one has actually patented it, but it's kind of a similar thing. People copy stuff in art all the time!

I don't feel like it's a patent that should have been allowed in the first place.

Maybe Square Enix should patent the Fight, Magic, Ability, Item menu so no one can use it. Or how about white borders and blue background for Text blocks in games?

It all sounds nuts, but this is the kind of thing that can become an issue after this trial.

I feel like Nintendo is only doing this because Palworld thumbed its nose at Nintendo. Maybe it's deserved. Maybe it's not. I just worry what this could mean going forward.

Re: Palworld's Japan Release On PS5 Delayed As Nintendo's Lawsuit Looms

GamingFan4Lyf

@babybilly Well, Nintendo did. There is a patent by Nintendo on the entire Pokemon capture mechanic. And it was granted.

So you can't throw a ball on a weakened enemy and show a capture percentage.

I did watch the video and the capturing in Palworld is exactly like it is in Pokemon - down to the shaking ball and everything. So if the developers want to get NIntendo off it's back, it just changes how it looks and they can't be touched.

Re: Palworld's Japan Release On PS5 Delayed As Nintendo's Lawsuit Looms

GamingFan4Lyf

@Serpenterror Okay, now I understand.

Though, again, there are plenty of other games that have a monster catching component where you weaken enemy and then charm it or some other "not a Pokeball" technique. And then they are summoned in a "not using a Pokeball" way. The concept is still very similar, though.

I mean...all Pocketpair really has to do is change the way "catching" works. It's a spell. It's a tablet. It's...something else other than a ball. Heck, it's a bloody vacuum cleaner to catch and a rocket launcher to summon!

I dunno, I feel like, if Nintendo wins, this will open up a nasty can of worms. It's not necessarily because I support Pocketpair but because I think it will give Nintendo too much power to go after a lot of other games that have similar gameplay mechanics to Nintendo IP - especially since Nintendo is the most bullish company when it comes to protecting their IP.

What's next - Nintendo patents the Mario's jumping mechanics and then goes after any other platform title because they are infringing upon that mechanic?

"You have a 3D wall jump to your character?! Sorry, that's ours!"

Re: Palworld's Japan Release On PS5 Delayed As Nintendo's Lawsuit Looms

GamingFan4Lyf

@Serpenterror Thank you.

No, I get it. I am just wondering what patents this game is breaking since it's a survival game and not a turn-based RPG where you collect monsters you fight.

I didn't know what "patents" this came could possible break being an ENTIRELY different game than Pokemon games since Nintendo isn't going after copyright.

Re: Palworld's Japan Release On PS5 Delayed As Nintendo's Lawsuit Looms

GamingFan4Lyf

@Itachi2099 I mean, okay, so the dude is a scumbag and lazy. But "this dude is a copycat" doesn't exactly hold up in court when so many games have borrowed ideas from other games without reprimand. "This dude stole assets" is different.

All I want to know is what exactly Nintendo is going after.

I don't care about opinions.

I just want to know what Nintendo can legally go after for a survival game if it's not going after copyright claims due to character designs. Poketpair thumbing their nose at Nintendo and Nintendo being angry about it isn't illegal.

Re: Palworld's Japan Release On PS5 Delayed As Nintendo's Lawsuit Looms

GamingFan4Lyf

@SalvorHardin I am sure Nintendo wouldn't just send out the "Law Squad" without concrete evidence...but what is it?!

And why not simply reach out to Palworld team and say - hey, my dudes, this particular feature in your game is patented by us - patch it out or we'll take you to court!

I don't play Palworld - so I don't know all the ins and outs of the game. But from what I did see, only the creature designs resembled anything close to Pokemon and the rest was your cookie-cutter survival game (e.g. Ark).

I mean, does anyone here play Palworld to explain what exactly Nintendo is going after with the game that resembles anything close to Pokemon game mechanics?

Re: Palworld's Japan Release On PS5 Delayed As Nintendo's Lawsuit Looms

GamingFan4Lyf

I'm just not sure what Nintendo is fighing here. It's not a copyright claim and this game is essentially a survival game and not a turn-based RPG. Other than the monsters looking like Pokemon, this game couldn't be any more different than Pokemon games.

What patents is Palword breaking? Monster collecting? I mean, Ni No Kuni has monster collecting. Doesn't Digimon have monster collecting?

I am sure there are a ton of games where you capture monsters to use as allies to fight for you that haven't been put on a chopping block.

I'm not trying to take a side, I don't truly understand what Nintendo is after if it's not going after copyright claims with the character designs.

If Palworld is in the wrong, then I am sure they can make some changes to the game to no longer be in the wrong. If Nintendo is clutching at straws because of Palworld's success, then shame on Nintendo.

Re: Does Astro Bot's Super Mario 'Inspiration' Cross A Line? Fans Seem Divided

GamingFan4Lyf

@ATaco It's a fair point. I let my daughter play Astro's Playroom (she's 9) and she didn't even care about the bots. She just liked to play the Monkey Climb portions.

I think it helps that Astro Bot doesn't actually provide names for the characters. Unless you get the reference, it's just some specially dressed character.

@Yosti Of course, as long as they aren't attacking the person! Thankfully, no one has. For the record, I never said the person was disruptive.

@dskatter I have all three as well. Though, I did just recently get a PC, so the consoles are slowly getting replaced. The Xbox is all but replaced. The PS5 will be a game-by-game basis (e.g. Astro Bot). Switch is exclusives-only anyways, so no change there.

I cancelled my PS5 Silent Hill 2 pre-order from Amazon and will be getting it for cheaper on PC using Green Man Gaming (I think they have it on pre-order for like $55).

Re: Does Astro Bot's Super Mario 'Inspiration' Cross A Line? Fans Seem Divided

GamingFan4Lyf

@Yousef- Not exactly sure what you mean by "disruptive behavior." The person stated their opinion - whether anyone finds it rational or not is a whole other topic - and people responded.

I don't see @Anti-Matter hurling insults at anyone. I hope people keep it civil towards the person, too!

The person has a very strict policy on content that they allow in their home. To most, it doesn't make any sense. If it makes that person happy, all power to them.

I'd say by most standards its quite the eccentric take...but, hey, whatever. If the person can sleep at night feeling fulfilled in life, who are we to judge?

Re: Does Astro Bot's Super Mario 'Inspiration' Cross A Line? Fans Seem Divided

GamingFan4Lyf

"Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery"

Astro Bot, much like Mario titles, is just pure joy.

The only thing that Astro Bot lacks that Mario games do better is that Mario games require more of a command of Mario's entire move set in order to 100% the game - therefore providing a challenge for skilled players.

Astro Bot is more about observing the environment to find secrets. It's still an absolute joy to play!

Anyone getting angry about Astro Bot taking inspiration from Mario needs to go touch grass or pet a kitten/puppy or something.
