Re: Round Up: All The Games From The Nintendo Indie World Showcase - December 2019

FiveDigitLP

I usually love the Indie presentations, but I felt like this one was a bit underwhelming. Sports Story was great to see as well as a few others, but for the most part nothing really stood out. I'm also extremely skeptical about SuperMash. Sounds great in concept, but I feel like it's going to be really hard to nail!

Also, anyone else missing our old presenters? I don't want to be mean, but these two are definitely my least favorites (and they did the last one or two indie presentations, if I remember right). I just don't feel like they exude as much energy or at least sincere interest. Damon and whoever came before him (name is slipping my mind) were much better imho.

Re: Feature: Best Nintendo Switch Short Games

FiveDigitLP

I'm surprised to not see the OPUS games on here. I've only played the first one, but it was quite the experience!

At any rate, thanks for this list! The older I get, the more I appreciate short games with what limited time I have. Some of my favorite games in general have been those like Limbo and Journey.

Re: Random: Reggie Reveals His Favourite Meme After 15 Years At Nintendo

FiveDigitLP

Reggie has grown on me over the years, but I've gotta say he really annoyed me in those earlier years. It actually all started with the 2007 E3, in fact. Both Reggie and Cammie were on stage playing Wii Fit and didn't really seem like they knew what they were doing. They just seemed like a couple suits trying to look good, but who didn't actually care about the product.

Perhaps Reggie didn't care much about games at the time, but I will say he has definitely gone on to prove that he does care about them now and I was quite sad to hear of him leaving. Funny to hear that this was his favorite meme.

EDIT
I'm thinking it may not have been Wii Fit and E3 2007, but instead when they played Wii Sports Resort in 2008:

Re: Play Pokémon Masters At Launch To Snag Useful Bonus Items

@Mando44646 I certainly understand where you're coming from. I have mixed feelings on the games with gacha. It can definitely be frustrating and I certainly had my fair share of times where I got the same freaking characters in FE:H. However, as a whole, I feel like Nintendo is a lot more respectful of the player when it comes to their mobile games than others. It may partially be the rate at which I play versus others, but I feel like I can play games like FE:H or Dr. Mario and never get to the point where the cool-down timer kicks in.

As for Super Mario Run, I certainly understand why some people might not prefer that style of play. Personally, I found the Remix 10 mode to be a lot more enjoyable than the base game.

Re: Video: Astral Chain's Launch Trailer Brings The Hype

FiveDigitLP

I gotta say that despite the cringe-worthy voice acting, this looks to have a pretty solid and interesting story. I'm kind of hit or miss with this kinds of action games, but this definitely looks really fluid and organic. I really want to get it, but I'm not sure when I'm going to be able to play it with my backlog as big as it is...

Re: Play Pokémon Masters At Launch To Snag Useful Bonus Items

FiveDigitLP

@Mando44646 Apparently it is too much to ask for most people. Don't forget that Nintendo tried that with Super Mario Run and it did terribly. So they figured they might as well just give the people what they want. Granted, this is a Pokemon game, so I'm not sure how much say Nintendo actually had in it.

@PharoneTheGnome
Happy to help! I've been anxious to try the game as well. I'm just not sure if I should spend any more money seeing as I bought Gris on that last sale...

Also, thought I'd mention that a really cool tool a coworker showed me for helping keep track of Switch game prices is dekudeals.com
You can create a wish list and it will notify you when prices change AND you can see the price of the game over the course of its lifetime so you can know how good of a deal you're getting!

Re: Poll: Have You Ever Had Problems With Nintendo Hardware?

FiveDigitLP

That being said, my issues have primarily been with the newer consoles:

SNES

  • NO PROBLEMS

N64

  • Occasional analog stick issues from Mario Party

GameCube

  • NO PROBLEMS

Wii

  • Wifi stopped working (halfway through console generation)
  • Disc drive stopped working entirely (not long before the Wii U arrived fortunately)

Wii U

  • Problems with the console needing to be hard rebooted the first time I power it on for the day (it's obscure and I haven't seen anyone else with this problem)

Switch

  • That early drift/signal issue with the left joy-con
  • Current drift issues
  • Marks on screen from dock

GameBoy Advance

  • NO PROBLEMS

3DS (original)

  • L/R buttons stopped working
  • Circle pad cover came off
  • Marks on top screen from lower screen

Re: Poll: Have You Ever Had Problems With Nintendo Hardware?

@dartmonkey
Obviously it's a bit late now, but I think it could have been helpful (though not an exact science) if you guys had first asked how many of the above systems people actually owned. With that, we could see an actual percentage of which console users had problems. Switch has the highest number of issues in that poll, but I'm sure there are more Switch owners on this site than anything else.

Re: Astral Chain Lead Composer Shares Samples Of The Game's Electrifying Soundtrack

FiveDigitLP

I like all of the songs on the blog post except for that last one. The composer says, "Going overboard on metal instrumentation might threaten to scale down the feeling of the piece" and I tend to agree here. As much as I like metal in general, I feel like it gets overused in certain Japanese games and instead feels dated or cheesy. (I'm thinking Bravely Default or Dynasty Warriors and the related games.)

That being said, one of the reasons metal feels out of place in a lot of the above is because of the historical or fantasy setting. With Astral Chain being set in a technologically advanced future, I can definitely get behind the metal there (especially the double bass drums)!

Re: Doug Bowser Says Nintendo Is "Closely Watching" Streaming Technologies

FiveDigitLP

@Heavyarms55
I know not everyone was this successful, but I used OnLive back in the day and was able to play some games without much perceptible lag. (I use qualifiers like that because it seemed better when I first got it than later on in its lifespan.)

That being said, your second point definitely applies. I lost the games I had purchased on the platform when it died off (which fortunately wasn't many). Obviously, having a subscription plan similar to Netflix or (more appropriately) Xbox Game Pass would better suit this model because then you don't feel like you own the content anyway.

Re: Fire Emblem: Three Houses File Size Revealed, DLC Also Confirmed

FiveDigitLP

@LUIGITORNADO I agree with you all the way. After playing Fire Emblem Heroes on and off for a while, it has really frustrated me with the direction they've gone with the characters and their outfits. It's a strategy game, not an adult-oriented anime intended for you to ogle the female characters. And I feel like this school setting only goes further down this path of fan service fantasy. "I get to be a teacher and then later enter into a relationship with my students."

That being said, Sacred Stones was my first FE game with Awakening being my second and solidifying my love for the series. I do find value in the support conversations and seeing where the individuals' stories go. I just feel like some of this stuff is a bit over the top and, dare I say, inappropriate for the series.

Re: Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 Gets A Cred Boost After Fans See Square's Effort

FiveDigitLP

I think the real problem here is that the Square Enix game is obviously trying to feel like the MCU. I don't know if it's actually canonically part of it (doubt it), but the costumes obviously look the same.

In order to not have comparisons drawn with the movies and yet still go with a hyper-realistic look, they need to make the costumes look distinctly different. Granted, I think they wanted to imitate the MCU in order to draw in that crowd, but unfortunately for Square Enix I think their plan is backfiring on them.
