I usually love the Indie presentations, but I felt like this one was a bit underwhelming. Sports Story was great to see as well as a few others, but for the most part nothing really stood out. I'm also extremely skeptical about SuperMash. Sounds great in concept, but I feel like it's going to be really hard to nail!
Also, anyone else missing our old presenters? I don't want to be mean, but these two are definitely my least favorites (and they did the last one or two indie presentations, if I remember right). I just don't feel like they exude as much energy or at least sincere interest. Damon and whoever came before him (name is slipping my mind) were much better imho.
Thank you @VexingInsanity !
Everyone here, this person gets it! How many of you people have even actually played the game versus just heard OTHER people complain about it?
I'm surprised to not see the OPUS games on here. I've only played the first one, but it was quite the experience!
At any rate, thanks for this list! The older I get, the more I appreciate short games with what limited time I have. Some of my favorite games in general have been those like Limbo and Journey.
I agree with @nimnio. Deku Deals is great. They make it really easy to look for good sales and send you emails if games on your wish list are on sale. You can even see a chart that compares the price over time to know how good of a value you're getting!
@nessisonett Gotta say I disagree. Pokemon X was one of my favorite pokemon games in recent years! Then again, you can take my opinion with a grain of salt seeing as my first game was Crystal and I didn't really play it much again until gen 5.
Reggie has grown on me over the years, but I've gotta say he really annoyed me in those earlier years. It actually all started with the 2007 E3, in fact. Both Reggie and Cammie were on stage playing Wii Fit and didn't really seem like they knew what they were doing. They just seemed like a couple suits trying to look good, but who didn't actually care about the product.
Perhaps Reggie didn't care much about games at the time, but I will say he has definitely gone on to prove that he does care about them now and I was quite sad to hear of him leaving. Funny to hear that this was his favorite meme.
At first glance I did find the comment by @RandomNerds to be a bit weird. However, after I thought about it some I do think a digital copy makes sense and realized that just like @link3710 I actually used Wii Fit U more due to it being a digital copy.
@Mando44646 I certainly understand where you're coming from. I have mixed feelings on the games with gacha. It can definitely be frustrating and I certainly had my fair share of times where I got the same freaking characters in FE:H. However, as a whole, I feel like Nintendo is a lot more respectful of the player when it comes to their mobile games than others. It may partially be the rate at which I play versus others, but I feel like I can play games like FE:H or Dr. Mario and never get to the point where the cool-down timer kicks in.
As for Super Mario Run, I certainly understand why some people might not prefer that style of play. Personally, I found the Remix 10 mode to be a lot more enjoyable than the base game.
I gotta say that despite the cringe-worthy voice acting, this looks to have a pretty solid and interesting story. I'm kind of hit or miss with this kinds of action games, but this definitely looks really fluid and organic. I really want to get it, but I'm not sure when I'm going to be able to play it with my backlog as big as it is...
@Mando44646 Apparently it is too much to ask for most people. Don't forget that Nintendo tried that with Super Mario Run and it did terribly. So they figured they might as well just give the people what they want. Granted, this is a Pokemon game, so I'm not sure how much say Nintendo actually had in it.
At any rate, there art style actually reminds me of the Fable games for Xbox 360. And ironically because of that, there's a sense of silliness to the look of this in my head. I'm sure I'd get over it once I played it, but that's what comes to mind.
@PharoneTheGnome Happy to help! I've been anxious to try the game as well. I'm just not sure if I should spend any more money seeing as I bought Gris on that last sale...
Also, thought I'd mention that a really cool tool a coworker showed me for helping keep track of Switch game prices is dekudeals.com You can create a wish list and it will notify you when prices change AND you can see the price of the game over the course of its lifetime so you can know how good of a deal you're getting!
Thank goodness. PGL was definitely an outdated system and something that could be implemented so much better on a modern architecture. There are many ways I can think of in which it could be done better!
I had already heard this game mentioned so many times in various circles that I assumed it was already on the Switch or even that it had been released on Wii U at some point. LOL
That being said, my issues have primarily been with the newer consoles:
SNES
NO PROBLEMS
N64
Occasional analog stick issues from Mario Party
GameCube
NO PROBLEMS
Wii
Wifi stopped working (halfway through console generation)
Disc drive stopped working entirely (not long before the Wii U arrived fortunately)
Wii U
Problems with the console needing to be hard rebooted the first time I power it on for the day (it's obscure and I haven't seen anyone else with this problem)
Switch
That early drift/signal issue with the left joy-con
@dartmonkey Obviously it's a bit late now, but I think it could have been helpful (though not an exact science) if you guys had first asked how many of the above systems people actually owned. With that, we could see an actual percentage of which console users had problems. Switch has the highest number of issues in that poll, but I'm sure there are more Switch owners on this site than anything else.
@nessisonett "Teething?" Ha, yeah right! The Gamecube isn't old enough for someone on here to have been teething at the time... Looks up year of release. Looks at calendar Oh. I feel old.
I was reading this thinking, "Is this a joke? What the heck is snooker? Sounds like something dirty." Then I saw the Youtube thumbnail. I guess it's the word for pool/billiards for those of you across the pond...?
I like all of the songs on the blog post except for that last one. The composer says, "Going overboard on metal instrumentation might threaten to scale down the feeling of the piece" and I tend to agree here. As much as I like metal in general, I feel like it gets overused in certain Japanese games and instead feels dated or cheesy. (I'm thinking Bravely Default or Dynasty Warriors and the related games.)
That being said, one of the reasons metal feels out of place in a lot of the above is because of the historical or fantasy setting. With Astral Chain being set in a technologically advanced future, I can definitely get behind the metal there (especially the double bass drums)!
"If you’re on Windows Phone, you need a new phone." @AlexOlney never change, my friend. I love your humor and it's great that it translates over from the videos to your writing. Do you have a blog by any chance? I'm being completely serious here.
@DTfeartheBEARD Agreed! That's where it definitely started for me back in the days of the 3DS. I found it to be quite handy having games I played off and on regularly (Pokemon, Animal Crossing, Fire Emblem, etc) to be in a digital format.
Ok, these are much cuter looking than the Funko Pop collectibles that are so popular. I might actually be interested. Anybody know how much these usually run in US dollars?
@Heavyarms55 I know not everyone was this successful, but I used OnLive back in the day and was able to play some games without much perceptible lag. (I use qualifiers like that because it seemed better when I first got it than later on in its lifespan.)
That being said, your second point definitely applies. I lost the games I had purchased on the platform when it died off (which fortunately wasn't many). Obviously, having a subscription plan similar to Netflix or (more appropriately) Xbox Game Pass would better suit this model because then you don't feel like you own the content anyway.
I guess I need to go back and play the original Bubsy games, because I remember really liking them as a kid. With how everyone hates on them, though, maybe I just liked it because I had such a limited selection of games to play...?
@Ludovsky Yeah, I think even a simple "girlfriend" mode would have been nice such as allowing someone to play as Malroth and just help with combat. The screen could just follow the first player around kind of like on the Pokemon Let's Go games.
I am really disappointed to hear that the local co-op is just local wireless and not actually on one console. My son and I both enjoy playing the first game independently, but when the trailers advertised co-op we were definitely looking forward to this one. Less so now.
I didn't even know this was a thing. When was it announced this was coming to the Switch?? This is definitely a pleasant surprise. I think I may already have this for the 360 due to Games with Gold, but seeing as I never have time to play games at home (the Switch is magical!) I'll definitely add this to my wish list... I always wanted to give it at try.
Wow. And here I thought I'd see the comments getting upset about Cavill's hair again, but instead we've got controversy coming from a completely unexpected direction...
@ryancraddock or someone on staff, is it possible to shut this pointless argument down?
@MjekuMati
I think...we are one.
In fact, I almost compared FE Heroes to porn, but didn't want to start any arguments. And yes, I felt like I rarely got any new characters as well! Got tired of seeing Oboro's face...
@LUIGITORNADO I agree with you all the way. After playing Fire Emblem Heroes on and off for a while, it has really frustrated me with the direction they've gone with the characters and their outfits. It's a strategy game, not an adult-oriented anime intended for you to ogle the female characters. And I feel like this school setting only goes further down this path of fan service fantasy. "I get to be a teacher and then later enter into a relationship with my students."
That being said, Sacred Stones was my first FE game with Awakening being my second and solidifying my love for the series. I do find value in the support conversations and seeing where the individuals' stories go. I just feel like some of this stuff is a bit over the top and, dare I say, inappropriate for the series.
I don't personally have a problem with more battle royale games, but man does that look like Fortnite! You think they could have tried to distinguish themselves a little more...
Though the premise of it sounds interesting (I've never heard of the series), this looks extremely campy. I came to the comments expecting people to be writing much of the same, but instead there are people...anticipating this game? mind blown
I think the real problem here is that the Square Enix game is obviously trying to feel like the MCU. I don't know if it's actually canonically part of it (doubt it), but the costumes obviously look the same.
In order to not have comparisons drawn with the movies and yet still go with a hyper-realistic look, they need to make the costumes look distinctly different. Granted, I think they wanted to imitate the MCU in order to draw in that crowd, but unfortunately for Square Enix I think their plan is backfiring on them.
@Heavyarms55 Completely agree! The easy modes that Nintendo has added has made certain games more accessible when it comes to playing with my 5 year old when normally he would not be able to keep up with me.
