@C-Olimar Sure that hurt ZombiU as well, but that was just an example. My point is that there are often games that are really good, but because they're not an established franchise, no one buys them. Unfortunately, it happens quite often.
I'm really looking forward to this game. I hope I can afford to buy it as soon as possible so as to support Platinum.
I'm really afraid this is going to turn into another ZombiU. It gets a good amount of critical acclaim, but no one ends up buying it because they're unsure about it. (And the idea that third-parties can't do well on Nintendo consoles persists.)
Man, why don't these kinds of things ever come to Oklahoma! Lol. They have PAX Prime and PAX East, why not PAX Central?? Though if they did, it would probably be way up in Chicago...or MAYBE Dallas.
Everybody is all on their case about their lack of "originality", but I'm wondering if they asked this knowing that it would get rejected and hoping that Nintendo would give them the go-ahead to release it as their own game. If they tried to get the game certified as is, perhaps Nintendo would have said "No, this looks too much like Zelda," but instead they asked bigger so the next option was what they really wanted.
Well, this is starting to sound more like a conspiracy theory almost, and I hadn't intended it that way...
It really is a shame they're having to move on. I liked the concept and artstyle, but I don't play a lot of multiplayer games and the single player mode really felt lacking. Even when I did play multiplayer, it just didn't feel like there was enough content to continue playing for long periods of time. I liked the asynchronous multiplayer ideas, I just felt there wasn't enough to make it really worthwhile.
One thing's for sure, we know a new Pokemon game for the Wii U is real. The video shown above is an official video from the Pokemon Gameshow. What we don't know is just what kind of game it is. A fighting game seems likely due to the stances and type of Pokemon in that picture along with the confirmation of those trademarks...
@element187 That's cool. I got what you meant and that you weren't really saying the game was exactly like Fire Emblem. But just the idea that someone who likes that series is likely to enjoy SMT is encouraging enough to me!
@element187 I just bought SMT4 yesterday myself, but I haven't been able to play it yet. I'm looking forward to it, though. I had a friend tell me it's like an adult version of Pokemon (which sounds good to me), but hearing you draw comparisons with FE:A has me even more excited.
On an unrelated note, I've decided to use my $30 credit to buy Rayman Legends! I'm greatly looking forward to that when it arrives in NA come September.
@idork99 "(am I the only person on this site who's yet to experience a Pokémon game?)" Probably. And what is wrong with you??
Anyway, now is as good a time as any to give one a try. I started on the second gen, but didn't ardently play the games until I bought Pokemon Black. Now I'm pretty excited about the sixth generation!
This is really cool. I know nothing about programming with the traditional languages used for game development, but I do know a thing or two about web technologies. I really think this has a lot of potential, especially if it's as easy to port as Nintendo claims it is. I mean, a week for that demo they showed? You've gotta be kidding me!
EDIT: I just reread that and realized that it took a week to develop AND port the demo. Even better!
@suburban_sensei I'd say it depends on what you're looking for. If you're looking for a brand new Zelda experience (who isn't?), then I strongly recommend picking up Skyward Sword. It's an excellent game and I really thought the combat can be quite fun (if you don't have a problem with motion controls). I personally thought Twilight Princess was a wonderful game, but I can see that some may have thought it was too similar to previous games (dunno if that was your problem). I think Skyward Sword, on the other hand, had a lot to distinguish it. There were some really unique boss fights, the motion controls were the first of its kind, and the story was really fascinating the way it pulls together a lot of the "legend" that comes from the other games. (This game is supposed to be the first chronologically, in case you're unaware.)
Likewise, as others have said, you might spoil yourself on the HD graphics if you start out with Wind Waker!
Man, if only this would have waited to come out a few years from now. My wife is pregnant with our first, and as much as I'd love getting this just for myself, I think it would be much more worthwhile with kids.
@SpinelessOyster Here, here! Aladdin was great! Though, if they did remaster it, should they do the Sega Genesis version or the SNES version? They were very distinct games, though I thought both were good.
In regards to the point on the lack of variety, don't forget that they plan to regularly add more games as time passes! (Of course, this will also cause the price to go up using their unique pricing method.)
@bigtig I'm not sure what you're referring to in the first sentence, but if you're replying to comment #57, then most of that was actually me quoting someone else from Kotaku...
That being said, I agree with the sentiment of what I quoted, though I probably wouldn't have been that harsh with my words. What GS is doing does seem a little shady, but if you go to Amazon you can see third party sellers listing both used and new games for extremely high prices as well. Are we upset then because Gamestop as a big corporation is doing this? I mean, the idea that they're (allegedly) not being truthful about the played-status of the games certainly seems wrong, but if these rumors are true, then people are getting new games when they thought they were getting used ones...? That doesn't sound like such a terrible thing to me.
The only thing I can possibly see as really wrong here is that (as some have suggested) Gamestop is artificially inflating the price of the game by making it appear that the product is still limited, when in fact they have the ability to acquire reprints.
There's still so much that is unknown about what the heck is even going on, though, so we can't really make too many assumptions.
@Peach64 My pleasure! People can be so ridiculous on the Internet in believing anything they hear and then just misconstruing it to no end.
@SCAR392 In regards to the reprints, I just read an article on Penny Arcade Report that references the below article. Basically, there is a company called Game Quest Direct that buys the licenses to reprint games from companies and then sells them on their website and in bulk to Gamestop. Who knows if that is the case in this scenario (especially since I don't see Nintendo allowing anyone else to reprint their games), but it's obviously not out of the realm of possibilities. http://www.siliconera.com/2006/01/16/the-business-of-reprints/
There are a lot of former Gamestop employees on Kotaku's comments saying that basically they took a bunch of old stock they (somehow) had and then just opened them and marked them as new.
Here's a comment by someone called Mit. (Of course this doesn't address why there are so many copies in the first place.): "They only do this for games that have been in stock new for a very long time and still have not sold. They eliminate the 'new' SKU for the title entirely, and convert all the new copies to used copies. They then get a more attractive price (for the consumer, typically), and are subject to discounts/promotions/deals, and are thus, more likely to sell, because they were not selling before.
The same thing happened here. The 'new' SKU for Xenoblade Chronicles was removed entirely. All copies of the game sold at GameStop are now 'used'. In this particular scenario, that means the product costs much more than the MSRP (and is also in line with the large trade-in prices they've been giving out for the game).
By the way people, MSRP = Manufacturer's SUGGESTED Retail Price. Once a retailer purchases the product, they can do whatever they want with it, including opening it and selling it for a higher price.
Also, no, they are not cutting out Nintendo from some kind of profits. Retailers pay up front for ALL new games. The publishers get paid immediately. It is then up to the retailer to sell them and make their money back + profit."
Thousands does sound a little bit outrageous here, but I will say that I saw an email from Gamestop (and received a phone call) not too long ago offering quite a bit ($50 or so) for the game. Maybe due to this they had an influx of people selling their used copies?? I'm not trying to defend them here, but this just sounds too unbelievable on so many levels.
Personally, I think they should just release anything that is in the English language at the same time. Is there REALLY that much of a difference between Europe and NA? I mean, I guess I'm mainly thinking of the UK...I do forget that it has to be translated for all of those other languages in Europe. Still, that would explain why games are often delayed in Europe, but I don't know why things are being delayed in NA.
@JoostinOnline True, the software is legal, but in order to install it you have to circumvent the security on the console...which is illegal. I'm not saying it should be, just pointing that out. But yeah, your point is valid that the article I posted only directly applies to the US.
@Peach64 Yeah, it's crazy that the games across the pond have such a difference in price. For us in NA, eShop games are the same price as they are in stores. But then again, with the whole Wii U price drops, it seems the UK has more room to alter their prices with video games, rather there's not a lot of margin in the US.
I wonder why we didn't get this video in NA? I'm really looking forward to Teslagrad and I'd seen Rain tweet earlier that we should pay attention to the ND for them. I was confused at first as to why I didn't see anything... Pssh. I like it when we do the global directs! lol.
@DESS-M-8 Wait, what? That's kind of scary. I've been comfortable knowing that I can get any VC game when I want (or have the money), but if they're starting to disappear, that kind of makes me uneasy. Perhaps it is because of the Wii U VC, but how do we know for sure? I know I regret not picking up DKC 2 & 3 before they disappeared. (I still can't believe that happened.)
@TruenoGT I was going to reply to @Captain_Gonru , but you seem to have done a fine job! I couldn't have put it any better. I personally buy probably 80 percent of my downloadable content for my Xbox from a browser.
@Emblem Perhaps it's just the UK IGN, because the US IGN is pretty good about positive Nintendo articles. I mean, they still do their fair share of "doom and gloom" ones just because they get more clicks, but the editor of the Nintendo section, Rich, seems like a pretty strong Nintendo fan.
Looks pretty sweet. I've gotten back into Pokemon this past week between playing Pokemon Emerald and borrowing Pokemon White from my sister-in-law so that I can trade some 'mons with my Pokemon Black game. (She owns it, but doesn't really play it.)
It's about time! I use xbox.com all the time to make downloadable purchases while I'm at work. Otherwise, it's likely I'd forget that X game is on sale and not getting around to purchasing it. And with Xbox, you don't even have to have the console on, it has a queue that your purchases go to until you boot up the system.
@raiden777 This isn't talking about downloading and playing Nintendo games on your phone or PC. This is talking about being able to go to a browser and select games you want to purchase FOR your Wii U or 3DS. It just makes it more convenient if you can't access the console.
I actually played a few hours of this game just this past weekend! My friend and I are trying to work our way through it, and man is it an odd gem. There are some pretty crazy stuff that happens in this game.
@ArkOne77 @Peach64 As far as price goes, you just have to look in the right places. I bought this, Path of Radiance, and Radiant Dawn all for under $30 each...in fact I believe two of them were under $20. I just found them at a local shop that specializes in games, comics, and movies. I don't know how they calculate prices, but I guess they don't base it off of eBay! lol. I don't know if you would have those kinds of places in the UK, but it's certainly worth a look if you do. For anyone wondering, the chain I went to is in the central part of the US and called "Vintage Stock". http://www.vintagestock.com/
@element187
No, I know what @sonicfan1373 is referring to. In the initial video for the Wii U at E3 2011 (I think), they showed a clip of someone playing golf and baseball (and maybe some other sports I can't recall) using the Wii U gamepad. The golf idea in that video is just like what Nintendo used in their video. I'll see if I can find it.
As I've said many times over, the main reason I want more third party games on the Wii U is so that I only have to own one console this upcoming generation. It was fun owning a Wii, PS3, and 360, but in the end it was kind of a pain. I'd like for the third party games I'm interested in to come to the Wii U as well, not necessarily because I think the console needs it, but solely for selfish reasons. Luckily Watch_Dogs is coming, but I'm really sad to hear about Mirror's Edge 2 and others not coming.
@MrWalkieTalkie
Weird. That totally looks like stop motion! Due to the humor, animation style, and pop culture references, it kind of reminds me of a clean version of Robot Chicken. I'm definitely interested in the movie now...we'll see how things go with the game!
EDIT: Also, I'd like to say to everyone that I'm guessing the name is intentionally generic and ridiculous sounding. It's kind of like the "Scary Movie" series (and other associated movies). I'm not saying it's the best choice, but I think they're trying to be over-the-top with it and maybe even a bit satirical.
@AlexSora89 Darn you! I just spent probably the last hour following a chain of random links on TVTropes.com due to you! It's just so easy to do on that website...
@hydeks I've heard some say that between it and MGS, Splinter Cell does stealth better. I haven't played enough MGS (just barely started the first game) to give my own opinion, but just thought I'd mention that in case you'd ever played them.
Unrelated to the topic at hand, did anybody else notice that that lady's name is "Jade Raymond"? I just find that to be kind of ironic considering two of Ubisoft's big IPs by Michel Ancel are Rayman and Beyond Good and Evil staring Jade. Sorry...I notice the little things.
Also, gotta say that if you've never played Splinter Cell, definitely give it a try. They're really fun stealth games and there's just nothing more satisfying than being able to make it through your mission without being spotted. There's all kinds of gadgets that Sam has access to as well such as electric stun darts (though they're lethal if someone is standing in the water, lol) and his iconic night vision goggles.
Wow, that is a great collection of characters. I'm not usually one to pay for DLC that is just aesthetics (skins, new characters, horse armor, etc.), but this is mighty tempting.
Yeah, that's what I usually try to tell people. You really have to play it. I didn't seem to have that issue when I was excited about the console. The advantages of the screen in the controller seemed obvious to me, but that doesn't seem to be the case for everyone.

Re: Satoru Iwata Aims for "Critical Mass" of Wii U Owners to Shift Perceptions
@element187
EDIT: Here it is - http://youtu.be/4e3qaPg_keg?t=1m2s
Re: Soapbox: When It Comes To Software Support, The Grass Isn't Always Greener
As I've said many times over, the main reason I want more third party games on the Wii U is so that I only have to own one console this upcoming generation. It was fun owning a Wii, PS3, and 360, but in the end it was kind of a pain.
I'd like for the third party games I'm interested in to come to the Wii U as well, not necessarily because I think the console needs it, but solely for selfish reasons. Luckily Watch_Dogs is coming, but I'm really sad to hear about Mirror's Edge 2 and others not coming.
Re: Warner Bros. Announces The LEGO Movie Videogame For Wii U And 3DS
@MrWalkieTalkie
Re: Feature: When it Comes to Games, What's in a Name?
@EarthboundBenjy
Haha. Good point! I guess I should have paid attention to that part before commenting.
At any rate, it felt like an hour!
Re: Feature: When it Comes to Games, What's in a Name?
@AlexSora89
Darn you! I just spent probably the last hour following a chain of random links on TVTropes.com due to you! It's just so easy to do on that website...
Re: Ubisoft - Splinter Cell: Blacklist A "Great Fit" For Wii U
@hydeks
I've heard some say that between it and MGS, Splinter Cell does stealth better. I haven't played enough MGS (just barely started the first game) to give my own opinion, but just thought I'd mention that in case you'd ever played them.
Re: Ubisoft - Splinter Cell: Blacklist A "Great Fit" For Wii U
Re: Gaijin Games Reveals Remaining DLC Characters For Runner 2
Wow, that is a great collection of characters. I'm not usually one to pay for DLC that is just aesthetics (skins, new characters, horse armor, etc.), but this is mighty tempting.
Re: Indie Developer Explains How Nintendo Made Him a Wii U Believer
Yeah, that's what I usually try to tell people. You really have to play it. I didn't seem to have that issue when I was excited about the console. The advantages of the screen in the controller seemed obvious to me, but that doesn't seem to be the case for everyone.
