The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt may well be on its way to Switch this year, but the series is also making its first appearance in TV form thanks to an upcoming show on Netflix. The first images from said show have been released today, giving us a sneaky insight into how it'll look.
In the images, we can see Henry Cavill (Man Of Steel, Mission: Impossible – Fallout) as the titular Witcher, Anya Cholatra as Yennefer, and Freya Allan as Ciri. We can also see the first poster for the series, sporting a "The worst monsters are the ones we create" slogan.
The first season of the show is set to launch towards the end of this year, with eight one-hour episodes in total.
As for the Switch game, that also has a vague "2019" release date. Still, it looks like there'll be plenty of The Witcher action for us to get stuck into this year.
Thinking of getting the game on Switch? Are you hyped for the idea of a Netflix show based on the franchise? Tell all below.

Look Netflix, stop making live action movies and series. Did anyone actually enjoy live action Death Note?
@LetsGoSwitch Lakeith Stanfield was woefully underused in Death Note. Yeah, it was awful but he’s a seriously good actor. Light also looked like emo Peter Parker from Spider Man 3.
Hopefully they won't make Geralt as boring as superman and he will look grumpy unlike the constipated man of steel from BvS. I won't even mention his moustache (I just did)
@PharoneTheGnome When did Nintendo fans become people like you? This community on this site has become a joke in recent years.
It's from America so it's going to have a bunch of different Americans in it. That's the long and short of your comment.
First appearance in TV form? Wasn't there a Polish show years ago?
And addressing some comments here, what kind of IP was "created for the games" which in itself are an independent adaptation of another IP? Don't tell me I'm the only NL visitor new to The Witcher who decided to start his binge with the damn books.😕
Also, regardless of how it turns out, Netflix got the license and greenlight to make an adaptation, so let them make one to their hearts' content. Disney adaptations tend to be quite authentic and never everyone's cup of tea either, but I don't hear the noise of Dickens, Hugo or Burroughs spinning in their graves much for it. The original canons and fictionverses remain a search away.
@Spudtendo @DatFunkySmell What was so wrong that he said?
I love the fact that a Nintendo site can report on Witcher news now. We really do live in the best timeline.
@Zuljaras Wrong? Depends on who you are, but the entire second half of the comment is just him being annoyed at people who don't look like him being in Hollywood productions.
@DatFunkySmell That is very wrong thinking fellow gamer.
This is my opinion alone but diversity for the sake of diversity is stupid.
Also we know Hollywood is making some of those things because they are made to do it by some unknown standards. There is some "diversity" quota that has to be filled.
@PharoneTheGnome I’m not sure if you’ve read the Witcher novels but it’s kind of filled with “SJW virtue signalling content”. So if it makes an appearance in he tv show then it’s being true to the source material.
@Zuljaras You might not know the links between human behavior and what people observe in media, but they are quite thoroughly linked whether people like to admit it or not. Ever hear of propaganda films? Movies designed to specifically elicit specific feelings, thoughts, and responses from a target audience/population.
Diversity for the sake of diversity is mirroring the world we live in. More people engage more easily in media where they can insert themselves into.
@DatFunkySmell "Diversity for the sake of diversity is mirroring the world we live in." YES! I think here lies one of the problems!
If that is the case then let it be.
@Belatarr I don't know what's in the novels, but there are dozens of times in the games where Geralt stands up for marginalized people because he is also someone that society treats unfairly. All the elves and such that he sticks up for would paint Geralt a SJW in your eyes, no?
@DatFunkySmell Did you just assume @PharoneTheGnome race?
I don't like all the pandering either. I prefer they try to keep true to the story content. Diversity is fine, diversity just to get social justice points is silly.
@Belatarr I'm describing every film ever made whether intentional or not. They all inform society in different ways.
@Kalmaro Are we even talking about the Witcher or just in general?
edit: "Did you just assume" jokes don't work on me? Could you clarify whatever point you were trying to make?
@Belatarr All I see are people who look vaguely European in the above images? Is there some other controversy not contained in this article?
I’m currently reading the books, which are good, but I can’t help think there are better fantasy novels out there which would benefit from this treatment. Like Robin Hobb’s series or Joe Abercrombie’s The First Law books. But of course the success of the videogames will be why this is happening, even if it is going to be based directly from the books rather than the games. I’ll be watching none the less!
@Belatarr Where did I even imply that it was bad? Your sentence was poorly constructed.
When I watched black sails I thought Zach McGowan would have been a good choice as Geralt. https://m.imdb.com/name/nm2090702/?ref_=m_tt_cl_t10
@DatFunkySmell right here.
You made a comment about him not being happy about something based off them not matching in skin tones. Unless he edited that part of his comment out, I don't see where that even came up, so I wasn't sure why you attacked them on it.
So it looks like you just assumed their race. I wasn't making a joke.
@Zuljaras More inclusion = more dollars. That's the most cynical look at it. Another could be that minorities are real people with jobs in media and don't consider white guys the default.
@Belatarr I can read Spanish, sort of, but definitely can't speak it. Not without Google, that is.
I'm still being civil with you and asking real questions like a normal person. So if I can't understand your point, I'll let you know.
@Belatarr I understand but those deceptions portray a world at war. It doesn’t necessarily mean the book is anti-sjw. The novels also depict that we should accept different people of different races no matter there views or beliefs. And Geralt refuses to kill monsters just because people see them as monsters. (Unless of course they are harming others). I think the book promotes the beliefs of what some would call “SJW virtue signalling content”.
@Kalmaro Definitely an assumption on my part. Not gonna pretend. If I am mistaken, I'm sorry. But I have yet to run across someone complaining about diversity if they themselves were from a minority group. It's not cut and dry, but I'm speaking generally on purpose.
Wow. And here I thought I'd see the comments getting upset about Cavill's hair again, but instead we've got controversy coming from a completely unexpected direction...
@ryancraddock or someone on staff, is it possible to shut this pointless argument down?
@goldbricks23 It turns out a Witcher happens to be a warrior for justice in society? Who would have thought such a thing?
@Belatarr You're just attaching your own feelings to that made up term.
@DatFunkySmell Well I AM part of the minority group, and I can tell you that it's annoying seeing people thrown into positions just because of their skin tone and not because of their own merits.
Not going to get into politics. However, I remember being told by someone at my current job that I got hired just because of my skin. That is horrible, I'm more than my skin color :/
So when I heard about them mixing races for extra points in the Witcher show, I was annoyed. If they are doing it just to be different, that's one thing, but we know why they are doing it and it's not appreciated. I want to go into more detail but it's hard to here. People are already trying to shut us down.
@Kalmaro I think they're doing it because medieval Europe had people in it besides the brightest whites. Your second sentence describes an incident of someone being racists toward you and your reaction was to agree with them? That's what I'm reading.
@Belatarr I haven't begun to argue with you. The Witcher games promote choice. But unlike games where you play your own avatar, Geralt already has a pre-established personality. So between 2 options where one is to help and the other is to ignore, both are true and accurate to who he is as a person. Geralt might ignore someone being attacked because it's not his problem. Geralt will also help because he doesn't like seeing the weak preyed upon.
@Xelha He was good in "Mission: Impossible - Fallout."
Hooo Nelly this comment section is something.
I will state two things: 1) Cavill looks awesome, but this movie looks like garbage. Knowing some already heavy controversy coming out of it (comment section points to that), Hollywood has had a recent reputation of going "Full Rowling" on certain criteria of media.
But that leads me to a point that @DatFunkySmell made aware early here. It's a product of the environment. Back in the day the original Dumbo was made, it was okay to have crows with stereotypical old-Harlem accents. It was a product of that time. Uncomfortable for some now, sure, but it is a prime example of what's happening now. A reflection into modern day if it were.
Hollywood is inundated with strict and strongly progressive minds. It comes with the territory, artists are much more likely to be liberal, and when our climate challenges people to be more than the next, we see this progressive race most moderates would even consider extreme. And that is where others who have disagreements with it see it getting further away, hence the SJW terminology and even the phrase "Commiefornia" is spurred from. It's the reaction similar to those back in the day of old Dumbo not liking the crows. But ignored cause they were the minority of the situation. Something to consider here.
Now that being said, I don't like the Yennefer, in my memory she is pale. So I would obviously expect that reflection. But it is Hollywood, and the current social media climate demands internet back pats for "encouraged" diversity, I don't naturally suspect it to look like my expectations. Cause where Hollywood is, and their attempts to garner more viewership. It's why they also remake movies and sequels out the wazoo. Money.
I get that my statement is made will trigger people that it's racist to protest making darker skin on lighter characters, but we also had an issue with pastel coloring from an artist using different light for a Pokemon gym leader, where the intent of nationality was still there.
This is not me being against inclusion, if we want more "diversity" in skin tone, I encourage more people to make new game characters reflecting that. Changing what exists not only insulting, but insinuates that we're at pinnacle creation, nothing else can be done. And that's dangerous.
Well, the minute the term "SJW" was mentioned we all knew this comment section would become terrible. Some people just love to make everything political and weird.
The costumes look legit, hopefully the series can capture some of the magic they had when they made castelvania but we'll see.
@DatFunkySmell No one was being racist to me exactly. It turns out that at my job, complaints were made that the department I was hoping to get into was 'too white'. Thus, I was pick ahead of anyone else. They were just telling the truth.
I was unhappy when I heard that because I have some pride in myself and I'd like to think I was hired because I was the best person for the job.
As for the race changing in the Witcher, it is absolutely true that not everyone looked exactly the same over there. Some people with darker skin tones existed... But they were in an extreme minority and the character they changed was already described as white, basically.
It would be like the first Harry Potter movie coming out and we find out that Ron is black, despite him being described as something else everywhere else.
@Kalmaro It is funny you mentioned Harry Potter because in the theatre play some people really wanted Hermione to be played by a black person
Those people did not even read the books because they were telling everyone that "nowhere in the books is written the color of Hermione skin"
Can you imagine
meh it's Netflix. even if it is good it'll be cancelled in no more than 3 seasons so what's even the point.
@LetsGoSwitch I have to assume you mean they should stop making them based off of popular anime and video games because not all of their live action shows are bad.
@Zuljaras Right, because black folks with blazing red hair is totally natural... In London or wherever they loved. Mmhmm!
Suppose they could just say it was 'magic'.
@Belatarr The interesting thing is that if you hover over the messages where people were going off on me, they each had a TON of dislikes. Pretty self explanatory on how the vocal minority just seems like the majority by yelling louder and more often than the actual majority that tends to go around life being peaceful and allowing others to do as they please.
@Kalmaro "Black" magic?
I hope this does not offend you! It is just a joke
@Paraka I in no way what so ever was referring to race in my comment about Hollywood bringing politics in to the show. I was only saying that they often times deviate the story to add in politically driven subjects rather than sticking to the original intent of the story.
I will give it a shot, I'll judge when it actually releases.
Not bad imho. I only played the first game on pc ( and I don't liked it becouse of some mechanics and in general for me it was boring), and read one of the books. I think the story is very good and they can make good movies of it. We will see.
@PharoneTheGnome The IP was not created for the games, it is from a polish set of novels. But if it offends you so much I would ovoid the game as like the other in the series the witcher 3 deals with subjects such as racism, bigotry and sexuality.
@Spustatu Sorry ,I only mean video games and anime
@Zuljaras You are funny, I like you.
@PharoneTheGnome - I had no intention to pretend you did. But the politics is brought by Hollywood, and my comment is just reflective of that. Doesn't matter if it is an identity politic, or some current heat of social affairs at the time, Hollywood will make it in reflection of our time. It's why detective films spiked, it's why there is stereotypes that are aged and outdated.
@LetsGoSwitch That makes a lot more sense. I haven't watched any of those from Netflix. I'm going to try the love action Avatar, but I'm obviously worried.
They really know how to avoid making money. Everyone and their dog knows that the women in "the witcher" have a massive fanbase and are close to sacred, yet they proceed with a arabic yennifer and a blond nordic ciri?
Wow. The images actually look surprisingly good. Well done!
@LetsGoSwitch
Jog on.
The irony and hypocrisy in some of these comments is highly disturbing. I'm going to have to add a few more people to my ignore list unfortunately. In relation to these screens though and on-topic I'd like to say that the show seems like it has a lot of potential to be amazing. These look really cool and I'm certainly looking forward to seeing the show when it starts. ^o^ I don't think the Witcher series is very...concerned...with social politics and whatnot. And I'm ok with that. It still has some great characters and amazing stories. If there's ever something I disagree with or don't like it just gives me reason to be grateful that the real world that we live in is becoming more accepting and understanding all the time
He looks better then the first image they released im hype!
Cavill actually looks quite good. Less like Legolas than last time.
Not sure about Ciri though. This girl doesn't look like much of a fighter.
Keep it on topic please, I’ve deleted a bunch of personal attack comments.
Shouldn't he have TWO swords?
@AlphaElite no
@Wavey84 This series is based on the books, not the videogames.
@Kalmaro I don't know who the actress is portraying Yen, but she just looks literally like a dirty white woman. Geralt is also a lot more pale than Henry Cavill.
@Wavey84 did you not like detective pikachu thought it was a pretty good live action adaptation.
@Wavey84 it takes place in the Detective Pikachu game universe and does a pretty good job of staying true to the ip.
But seriously? The Witcher?
@BlackenedHalo What do you mean, "no"? Is there some part of Witcher lore I'm missing where he only has one sword?
@__dave poster looks gay friendly enough to me though...
@Xelha So, I first saw Henry Cavill on a show called The Tudors. Let me tell you - he was utterly fantastic. Maybe it's a type cast for him, but he was just simply brilliant on that show. The Tudors was a really popular show in the early 2000's on Showtime. It's why when he was cast as Superman I thought it was a good fit. Because he had that classic superman jawline while also showing some great acting chops in The Tudors.
Unfortunately, the Superman movies to me suffered from some really poor scripts. I mean hell they had Diane Lane in there, a pretty good actress in her own right, and even her lines were pretty poor. I don't know what it is about DC movies. Even say, Wonderwoman, I think it's a good movie. But I think it's a bit overhyped, because it's the ONLY DC movie in the current run that actually had a decent script. And when your the first good movie in that entire run, the hype levels bubble over.
Herny Cavill I think can be fine as Geralt, but again. I really hope the writing and script work is good, so I can see if the old The Tudors star can return to his former glory. I know, bear minimum, there is an EXCELLENT source material at work. So hopefully they translated it well for a show.
@PharoneTheGnome based off the books, dude.
@PharoneTheGnome or go on a website not filled with weeb incels crying about games having boob sliders being censored and you’d get a different reaction.
@Belatarr Just curious as to who this "we've" you're referring to and what good stories have you lost?
Does anyone know what the rating will be for this?
l rather to see a movie one instead of a show. I wonder if they will ever do a Witcher movie that will be good.
@__dave ...What on earth are you talking about? What does politics have to do with anything we are discussing?
No one was even talking about Trump. All you just did was come in and insult people whom you assume think a certain way.
@__dave "They have resorted to playing victim" ohhh the irony!
I'm glad there is a report functionality on this site
Looks better than the one with Żebrowski on stills.
@Paraka someone got triggered here, and it was the one that felt the need to post a wall of text.
@__dave - I don't think anyone here is decrying that someone is of color playing a role, it's more that it isn't as described to us for years, as fans, what certain characters even are. I can almost certainly assure you everyone here would react the same if they made Black Panther an Asian.
But look at you conflating the opinions with problematic political discourse, though.
@StevenG - ... What on Earth are you prattling off about? Long posts are signature to triggered people? Gotta elaborate on that, friendo.
@Paraka The only people I see getting hot and bothered are those who are offended that a director might hire someone who doesn't look exactly like a video game character.
@StevenG - Oh no, an opinion, that can be problematic.
It falls in line with the same thing when people lost their lunch over Fed Force not being Prime. Opinions and expectations.
@__dave I find your comments to be highly racist and offensive.
@Wavey84 It doesn't actually take place in our world it's in the pokeworld. Though I could understand how the artistic decisions of the movie could throw some people off since the pokemon definitely look very different.
If anyone is worried about the fact that Geralt only wields a single sword instead of two, keep in mind that this isn't an adaptation of the game series, but the novels that the games themselves derive from
That also explains why Geralt doesn't have facial hair (even though he didn't have facial hair in Witcher 1 and 2 anyway)
I really hope this series is good. After really half-assed adaptations like Death Note and Fullmetal Alchemist, it seems like Netflix is beginning to clean up their act based on this, The Dark Crystal, Castlevania, as well as the announcements made for Devil May Cry and Cowboy Bebop
@Kalmaro You don't see the parallels between right-wing rhetoric and the people we're describing? It's a feedback loop.
@Zuljaras So you read the post, but didn't understand what was written? Still commented anyway. How brave!
@PharoneTheGnome You started this when you wanted to bring your socio-political biases into a gaming website.
@DatFunkySmell I perfectly understand it. Most people that play the victim card are the "under-represented" type.
Also thank you for the compliment
Just a little story why I am against such "representative" stuff. In the Gotham series the writers tried to make the Penguin gay. And it backlashed so hard they never mentioned this in the next season. I was happy about that because you CAN'T take a well developed character from YEARS and make it something he is NOT. I am fine with a brand NEW character that is gay but NOT one that is well established.
I hope I wrote that well enough to be understood correctly.
I don't want to be called homophobic, bigot again by some blind fanatics
@LuckyErika noted down, thanks!
@DatFunkySmell No, not really. They basically painted right wingers as racists and you seem to be agreeing with them.
What on earth are you talking about? What does politics have to do with anything we are discussing?
No one was even talking about Trump. All you just did was come in and insult people whom you assume think a certain way.
