Amazing game and worth getting if you haven't played it, but the Wii U version is what I'd actually consider to be the "definitive" version. With out the GamePad, you're really missing out on the Murfy levels and those can be a lot of fun...especially for people who don't game as much (though not exclusively so).
I did not realize this series was a tactical RPG. I always just assumed it was a regular turn-based JRPG, so I have not been interested. I however love the style of Fire Emblem and similar games.
That being said, I've always thought the art direction with this series was really weird. I know Japanese culture has a thing for trying to make characters look younger and cutesy (I can't remember the word for it), but when they have characters that look like 10 year olds yet are wearing next to nothing it's kind of disturbing.
I'm trying to decide if I should jump on this now or not. I have only used up a fraction of my internal storage, but I know I'll need it eventually. That being said, depending on how quickly I need it the price of this card may have permanently dropped to this price anyway!
Much to the dismay to current Wii U owners (I'm one of them), I think porting games to the Switch to fill in the release schedule for new games is a good idea. Since the Wii U had such a small install base, there would be a lot of people who hadn't played any ports that do come out.
That being said, I went ahead and voted for games on Wii U that I don't yet own:
@PtM Well yeah, it says the reward is available until July, but I'm pretty certain that refers to how long you have to grab the coupon, not to actually use it. At least, I'm pretty sure that's the way it has been with other rewards.
EDIT: Oh! I see it down there in fine print at the bottom. "This discount is valid through 11:59 p.m. PT, August 1, 2017". Pth. Iwata made the whole system sound so much better when it was theoretical.
Does anyone on here know if the discounts have an expiration? Like if I get the Fates one, can I save it until whenever I have enough money to purchase it (or even better, until the slim chance that it goes on sale)?
This is probably the only time I'll ever have a Just Dance game on any of my consoles, but hey, it's the second demo so it will be nice to have something else to try!
1. ARMS
2. Skyrim
3. Mario Odyssey
4. Fire Emblem Warriors
5. Xenoblade Chronicles 2
It seems I'm one of the few that is very interested in ARMS! I think the concept is really intriguing and cannot wait to give it a try. Also, I have put many many hours into my 360 version of Skyrim, but I will be quite tempted to get it when it eventually comes out. The idea of being able to pick up that game and just play it whenever...oh man.
I'm interested in Fire Emblem Warriors and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 for the same reason. So that I can play them whenever and actually be able to complete them! I have Hyrule Warriors and the original Xenoblade Chronicles, but have never found the time to beat them. With two young kids, it's hard finding time to game at home, so the Switch is a match made in heaven.
@NEStalgia Bravo for that post. You had a lot of really good points and brought some things to mind I hadn't considered before.
For instance this: "Bottom line is the Switch is REALLY a cool piece of hardware. You don't have it yet, but once you have it it gets seriously hard to go back to the stationary PS4/Xbox and take it seriously...they feel pretty antiquated. They're 'more powerful' (honestly they're not that powerful if you ignore their marketing...they're also running tablet hardware....older tablet hardware than this just a little more brute force), but the stationary black box plugged into the wall that eats optical discs just feels really antiquated after you get used to the modernity of the Switch."
So so true. The idea of playing something on one of my other stationary, disc-based systems at this point feels so foreign. Also, I hadn't considered the idea that as a whole the electronics industry is moving towards mobile platforms (look at the popularity of laptops and tablets over desktops these days). I really hope this does well for Nintendo.
This is so very true. That's the primary reason I got BOTW on the Switch instead of the Wii U. I might would have held off on getting one otherwise, but the appeal of being able to play the scale of a game on the go was too much. When I was purchasing my Switch, everyone in line said they were buying it because of Zelda as well.
@JaxonH How's that Google USB-C charger working for you? I know you haven't said that you've really had a need to use the extra adapter, but I've wondered how well it works with the Switch. I have one for my Nexus 5x and was wondering if it provides enough power for the Switch. I've been leery about using it.
Yep. I finally managed to snag one on Wednesday during their restock. Everybody in line with me was buying it for Zelda, though most of us had already bought it. So I'm betting that "almost" one-to-one attach rate is due to the people like us who already purchased the game in advance.
@manu0 You seemed to be arguing for the sound selection CDs saying that they won't have any spoilers, but my point is that the BOTW did have a small spoiler in my eyes. At any rate, it would be an obvious thing that a full soundtrack would have spoilers, so I don't see how that's a reason for Nintendo not to include them. Regardless, you certainly seem to agree that soundtracks are lovely things to have, so at least we can agree on that.
@manu0 Not in North America, they didn't. The Club Nintendo over here never had any soundtracks and it always frustrated me. The two I mentioned were just special promotions when you registered the games. And I will disagree a bit that the sound selection didn't have any spoilers. It's not a big deal, but when I heard the Rito Village track I was kind of disappointed that I didn't get to hear it first in the game.
@naut I completely agree. I love the CD that came with BOTW, but it would be great if it was the entire soundtrack! It's not like it's going to eat into sales of the soundtrack or anything since they don't actually sell it! They only times I can recall them actually giving full soundtracks were the Club Nintendo specials for OOT 3D and MM 3D.
I've been to the Austin show twice. It's an unforgettable experience. It's an 8 hour drive for me (Tulsa, OK), but totally worth it! Fortunately, they've started bringing it to Oklahoma City, so I might try to make it there in December!
"disregarding some commentary that evidently just wants to troll the thing (a video 'listing all the problems' has earned plenty of views, and complaining about the lack of menu music, really?)" Ug, yes. I have some coworker gamers who shared the video with me at work in our online chat room. They were legitimately concerned about the issues, but I feel like the video is just made with the hopes that it would go viral (and that it did!) with the way it is edited.
@gatorboi352
Man, that's pretty harsh. My opinion is this: I plan on getting a Switch in the near future anyway, so why not get it sooner and have the superior version of Zelda? Besides that, I would really like to be able to take the game on the go, so the Switch version is pretty much a must.
I might be more swayed with going for the Wii U version if they had kept the inventory and map on the bottom screen. But since it is essentially identical to the Switch version, there's no reason to get it instead.
Zelda, Has Been Heroes, and Snipperclips are what primarily interest me. However, I had previously ignored Snake Pass (based on its artwork unfortunately on my part), but watched the video on here and am quite interested in it now!
I am a HUGE Zelda fan and greatly looking forward to this game. However, can someone please explain to me how having a clip of a dragon in the trailer is a spoiler...?
Where is the emoji for "gag"? And where are my fellow Lego purists? These toys look disgusting and it saddens me any time I see Nintendo stoop themselves to working with this hack of a block-building company. (This is mostly hyperbole, but I really do believe that Lego is a much higher quality than Mega Bloks.)
This is disappointing. I used the Wii U version quite a bit to pull up stuff on the TV to show people. Of course, without having a screen to be able to type on, it would be a lot less useful, but this is still disappointing to hear regardless.
@rjejr I can see why people wouldn't like this game, but wow, you didn't like the Warioware games (including Game & Wario in that) or Rabbids? Back when I first got my Wii, I always would introduce people to it with those games and they were always a hit. To each their own, but it just comes as a surprise to me.
Great quote from the actual article: "Like a wizard (never late, nor early, but arriving precisely when intended), Nintendo views Switch as neither under or overpowered, but exactly what it needs to be to deliver the experience it hopes players want."
@FragRed LOL. I know you're from the UK, so there's no expectation that you would know, but your questions just make me laugh.
"When will we hear how well the Superbowl commercial did? Has it aired yet?" The Superbowl is tomorrow. Starts at 5:30 PM CST. We will know shortly after the commercial airs how popular it ends up being. That stuff goes viral fast (if it does at all, that is).
@rdrunner1178 I feel you, man. I'm an okie too! This weather has been messing with people's immune systems so much. My wife came down with something yesterday.
This looks really interesting. I just hope it doesn't end up like Chasing Aurora. I loved the art style of the game and they made it look so interesting! But I bought it and was quickly bored (which is not easily done for me). The levels were extremely short and the controls were just a bit too difficult. I thought it would be a fun party game, but even myself and my gamer friends had trouble with the controls.
@Arnold-Kage Yeah, it's really not that bad at all. I just wish there was a way to set it to auto-renew. I believe you have to manually renew every time and I'm always afraid I'm going to forget and then lose everything.
@DanteSolablood That would be awesome! I need to look to see what I have left. I can't remember at this point, but I know it was like legendaries from gen 3 or 4 since they were so much harder to get. I have everything from 5 and 6. Haven't completed the Sun yet, though.
@DanteSolablood I haven't actually been playing Pokemon consistently all that long (Gen 5), but Gen 6 made it super easy to complete your Pokedex with the trading system on there. All I'm missing is a handful of Legendaries and I was able to get several of those with the anniversary events last year!
@MrGawain That makes me think of when Tekken Tag Tournament 2 for Wii U arrived. It was virtually the same game as was on other platforms, but the extra skins totally made it the preferable option. They were hilarious imo.
@JaxonH Personally, I take it these reactions you speak of are coming from armchair feminists (keyword: armchair) who see a female character crying and assume the worst about how the character is going to be portrayed. I don't think it's Nintendo fans for the most part that are reacting negatively to this.
@Expa0 Seriously? I greatly enjoy his art style. I mean, I've only played Awakening and an not familiar with any work outside of FE, but I like what I've seen!
@ASonic3582 I guess I wasn't clear in my original comment. What I meant was the Android platform is usually more commonly used by power users. The exception to this is Samsung phones since they've managed to break into the market for the average smart phone user.
@ottospooky You know, I don't know if I've heard of someone comparing micro transactions to the arcade machines of old. That's a really good point and I think your comment in general was spot on.
I think it's a nice gesture of Nintendo to release the game on Android first this time. Also, I think it's kind of fitting. The game that has mass appeal and is easy to pick up (Mario) releases on iOS first, while the game that is more technical in nature releases on the platform of choice for power users (barring Samsung).
@NEStalgia Amen! I agree wholeheartedly. I have a friend who was telling me he thinks the Japanese voice-acting is better because they have "more experience"?! Not sure what he meant by that. I could sort of see if he said he thought their quality of acting was better, but that's not what he said. At any rate, it's kind of hard to judge the quality on voice acting if it's not in your native tongue, in my opinion. I get that sometimes English dubs on Japanese work (anime or games) stinks, but to say that Japanese is "better" when you can only understand English seems odd to me. Personally, I thought FE: Awakening had good voice acting for the cut scenes. So if it's of that quality, then I'll be happy.
Man, looking through these comments and it's no wonder that Nintendo is closing down these services! Personally, it makes me sad to see both of them go. I don't use Miiverse as much as I did when I first got my Wii U, but I definitely feel like it's a better environment for talking about gaming than Facebook or Twitter. I'm sure my irl friends get tired of seeing what little gaming stuff I do post! Lol.
As for Streetpass, I do agree with a lot of you that say that you never get any hits anyway, but I feel like things got better once Nintendo introduced the relay stations. Also, with as many 3DS systems are actually in the wild these days, I feel like there should be more hits. I think the problem is that Nintendo hasn't provided any promotion for the Mii Plaza in the later versions of the system. I mean, I've met people who have a 3DS but have no idea what Streetpass even is!
@AlexOlney I'm totally with you on Streetpass as a mobile app! I was thinking how awesome that would be since (virtually) everyone has a cell phone and they always have it with them. The only downside is I don't know how they'd handle security. I mean, having your phone randomly pass information to another phone nearby seems like a great way to pass around malware...
@gatorboi352 Though I liked Miiverse and I am sad to see it go, I will be ok without it (still think it seems unreasonable, but whatever). But Streetpass?! They better change their minds on that one! I...I...I don't know what I'll do without Streetpass.
@rjejr I beg to differ. I greatly enjoyed the presentation. Sure it was a little bit dull at times, but it was better than most live E3 presentations I've seen. I really liked the style that they went with as well. The snapping transition when switching speakers, though kind of campy, was still cool. The videos in between introducing certain games and the joycons really reminded me of the Wii advertising. I lovely blend of western and Japanese style. As for convincing me to buy, well it was never a question so I guess that didn't matter...

It amazes me that so many people are not sold on ARMS. I personally think it looks like a blast and a really solid fighting game.
However, what I really want to see is unannounced games and improvements to the Switch.

I initially assumed that any new evolutions like that would just require candy. New Eevee evolutions would be part of the pool of random ones and all others that previously couldn't evolve would now have a button for it. However, the official PR from Niantic says otherwise:
"Be on the lookout for new Evolution items at PokéStops, which you’ll need to evolve some Pokémon."

Personally, I thought FE: Awakening had good voice acting for the cut scenes. So if it's of that quality, then I'll be happy.

I hate to be THAT GUY, but technically he's an interpreter. Translators handle the written word, while interpreters deal with what is spoken (usually on the spot as in this case).

Re: Nintendo Switch Won't Have Miiverse Or StreetPass
Re: Hands On: Putting the Nintendo Switch Hardware Through Its Paces
@gatorboi352 Though I liked Miiverse and I am sad to see it go, I will be ok without it (still think it seems unreasonable, but whatever).
But Streetpass?! They better change their minds on that one! I...I...I don't know what I'll do without Streetpass.
Re: Hands On: Putting the Nintendo Switch Hardware Through Its Paces
@rjejr I beg to differ. I greatly enjoyed the presentation. Sure it was a little bit dull at times, but it was better than most live E3 presentations I've seen. I really liked the style that they went with as well. The snapping transition when switching speakers, though kind of campy, was still cool. The videos in between introducing certain games and the joycons really reminded me of the Wii advertising. I lovely blend of western and Japanese style.
As for convincing me to buy, well it was never a question so I guess that didn't matter...
