@Serpenterror PS5 had a strong January last year against the Switch and we all know how that turned out, so a couple weeks of PS5 outselling Switch in early 2024 means little. Of course you already knew that, seeing as how you were trolling/fearmongering back then as well.

February seems pretty obvious. I also don't expect any hardware announcement this soon; I imagine Nintendo will have the same launch window for Switch 2 as the original Switch seeing how successful that turned out, so an announcement in late 2024 with an early 2025 launch is my prediction.

@-wc- Not all good quality media is created due to the pressure of competition. In fact, I'm not even convinced that a majority is. Of course, quality is subjective, so your comment is very pointless.

@LinktotheFuture I believe Animal Crossing takes a while to start due to processing all the changes to your island depending on how much time has passed since the last time you played, and not simply because it's loading.

@larryisaman So NES/SNES is "very early on" but SNES/N64 isn't? I can't think of any reason besides confirmation bias that you would pick 1990 as a cutoff point, but if you want a more recent example of a company bringing their "A game" after a success, there's pretty much all of Nintendo's handhelds and the PS2 was the follow up to the massively successful PS1.

Also, most of the consoles you mentioned were moderate successes (N64, PS3, XB1). The only real failures were the GC and WiiU.

@larryisaman Not at all. Many consider the SNES to be Nintendo's best console of all time, and it was the follow up to the massively successful NES. The idea that Nintendo only brings their "A game" after failure is completely false.

@DaniPooo It's been a while but I remember really liking the music. Gameplay was pretty boring and repetitive though so I'd say it's only worth playing if you're a huge mana fan, since it actually is a mainline numbered entry (Seiken Densetsu 4 in Japan).

@CupidStunt I'd say Legend of Mana was the last good one, and I say that as someone who hated it when it originally came out on PS1. I've learned to appreciate it over the years as a spinoff and understand why people love it.

Great news! One of the few games I'm willing to triple dip (have it on PC and PS4) on when it comes to Switch.

@Sisilly_G We definitely aren't "due" for a remake next year. Starting with FRLG on the GBA they've only done 1 remake per hardware cycle (2 on the Switch if you count LGPE, but that's a different kind of remake). It's always possible that GF accelerates the release of remakes so they don't fall behind the main series too much, but the past release schedule suggests we'll get a gen 5 remake sometime between gen 10 and 11 on the Switch 2.

I will never miss an opportunity to complain about lightning dodging and chocobo racing in Final Fantasy X. Some of the most obnoxious sidequests in what is otherwise one of my favorite games ever.

Voted for Terry Bogard because that chasedown for the invitation letter was by far the most entertaining trailer. Sephiroth was the most epic so that's a close second.

@UltimateOtaku91 With the exception of Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee (which was a different kind of remake), we've only gotten 1 remake per generation. I guess that could change if GF doesn't want the remakes to fall too far behind the main series, but the past release schedule suggests we won't be getting a B/W remake until after generation 10 launches on Switch 2.

@B_Lindz Your second interpretation of JRPG is utterly useless at describing anything consistently. By that reasoning the original Dragon Quest would be a "western style" RPG due to the inspiration it took from Ultima.

Also, Bloodborne and Elden Ring follow the same gameplay cycle as Demon's Souls, which itself was a spiritual successor to King's Field. Both are from Japan, so no, Bloodborne and Elden Ring are not "western style" games.

@B_Lindz Sea of Stars was developed by Sabotage Studio, a Canadian company. It is not Japanese.

@Thomystic Maybe at launch the PS2 was sold primarily as a DVD player, but certainly not in 2006+ when the PS2 would go on to sell 45 million even after the PS3 launched.

@Fizza Every Nintendo handheld (except the GBA) has had 2 mainline Pokémon games, and the second has never outsold the first. Sun/Moon came the closest to matching X/Y on the 3DS, but still fell about half a million units short.

Goodness, what's happened here? Seemingly in conjunction with the launch of Detective Pikachu Returns, the Switch OLED Model has seen a surge in sales, surpassing 100,000 this week, easily beating out the rest of the competition.

What happened here was the Mario special edition OLED was released on the 6th, which explains the huge sales increase. Doubtful it has much to do with Detective Pikachu Returns.

Anyways, great week for Japan! Lots of new games charting, Switch still doing great, and PS5 showing there's still a market for home consoles. And nice to see Xbox back in the 3 digit range. After those leaked Phil Spencer emails, the best thing for Japanese companies is for MS to fail as much as possible in Japan.

Those are some hilariously misleading analogies you've provided there. If NFTs really use up that much energy then comparing them to a gas guzzling SUV would have been reasonable. Which is yet another product I have no interest in ever buying, but I also don't have a problem with SUVs existing.

My rarest non-collector's edition game is probably The Misadventures of Tron Bonne on PS1. Probably have some other rare stuff but I'd have to do some more research.

Really enjoying The Teal Mask so far, so it's good to see SV still doing well in Japan! And after the leaked Phil Spencer email earlier this week it's very nice to see that Starfield doesn't seem to have had any positive impact on Xbox sales in Japan whatsoever.

@LXP8 The Japan Game Awards covers the Japanese fiscal year, so only games released between 2022 April 1st to 2023 March 31 are eligible. TotK will no doubt win something next year.

The original Mario vs Donkey Kong has some of my favorite voiced lines in the entire franchise. I loved how Mario even comments on a few things during the credits and calls Charles Martinet a nice Italian boy. They better do something similar with the new Mario voice!

That's a shame. There's very few companies that refuse to sell out and this is often the result.

The lack of wave 6 makes this such a wasted opportunity.

@Dazman It would certainly be nice if Xbox sold their IPs to competent developers, but it seems MS has big plans for the video game industry and they'll keep flushing billions away to see those plans through. Xbox would have gone the way of the Phillips CDi long ago if it weren't for MS's bailouts.
