@electrolite77 I'm not confused about anything. If anything you're confused about what proprietary means because I have news for you: SD is a proprietary format as well. There's nothing wrong with sticking to industry standards when there's no demand for the market to change. There's also nothing inherently wrong with proprietary media; the complaint most people really have is that proprietary media tends to be more expensive, but the MS format that the PSP used was common enough that prices were much lower than the memory cards that previous consoles (and the Vita) used.
Sony got many things wrong with the PS3, but they got just about everything right with the PSP. It's the only handheld to ever offer decent competition to Nintendo's (actually real) monopoly, and with good reason.
PS3 was many things, but it definitely wasn't underpowered. Maybe you're thinking of the Wii. Either way it's becoming quite clear that you were just projecting when you called me confused. And the fact that Sony added last minute motion controls to the PS3 controller Sixaxis and later developed the Move is proof that they definitely saw Wii as a competitor, regardless of your claims.
An incompetent division like Xbox closing down would have even less effect on the industry than Sega's departure. It would simply leave room for another competitor to enter the market. Perhaps even a competitor that doesn't constantly need bailouts from its parent company every time a RRoD level fiasco happens.
@steely_pete If you think this mail is bad, Phil appeared on the Animal Talking podcast just 1 week after the email was sent and stated that Nintendo "should be protected and helped to grow." He's actually deluded himself into thinking he's the one to "protect" Nintendo (as if Nintendo needs protecting in the first place).
@electrolite77 PSP was a fantastic device and is by far the best and most successful non-Nintendo handheld of all time. Nothing anti-consumer about it. Every console/handheld prior to the PS3 used proprietary memory cards so it's quite baffling you'd include that in your tirade.
Incidentally, the PS3 was the first console to not use proprietary storage media. All models of the PS3 allowed users to upgrade the internal HDD with standard SATA HDDs (unlike XB360 and their overpriced HDDs), and the 60GB PS3 supported 3 of the most common memory card standards at the time (SD, MS, and CF).
Now we know exactly what Phil meant when he said Nintendo "should be protected and helped to grow."
Utterly disgusting but expected that he's trying to see his ambition through with an ex-BoD proxy acquiring shares. Hopefully Japan's regulatory bodies are less corrupt than those in the west.
@electrolite77 That would be no different than what happened in the PS2's generation, which many consider to be Sony's best console ever. Not even close to the "worst thing possible for Gaming" and that "monopoly" would only have lasted one generation.
@electrolite77 PS5 has only recently started selling on par with Switch despite Switch being years past its prime. The idea that Sony would have a monopoly if Xbox wasn't constantly being bailed out by MS's profitable divisions is laughable.
@UltimateOtaku91 The numbering scheme for console generations was something invented by Wikipedia editors (who aren't supposed to do original research) and eventually caught on with the gaming media. The fact that they consider the 3DS/WiiU and Switch to be in the same generation is all the reason one should need to treat Wikipedia as the non-source that it is.
@AstroTheGamosian Walmart is a huge step down from what I do now so even if I worked there and left on good terms I wouldn't even consider putting them on my resume. Either way I'm not too worried. I've been fired 3 times and each time I replaced my employer before they replaced me (i.e. I found a new source of income before they hired someone to replace my position).
@AstroTheGamosian That's sad to read about. The troll in me would really like to get a job at Walmart during the busy shopping season for the sole purpose of quitting the day before Black Friday just to see the look on the manager's face (obviously without giving two weeks notice). Not this year, but it's something on my bucket list.
Going to playing mostly Pokémon Scarlet: The Teal Mask, with maybe a bit of Final Fantasy II from the Pixel Remaster. I'd like to finish all 6 FF games before FF7R2 comes out.
@Hydra_Spectre Nice to see Ghost Babel get some recognition here! Game Boy Advance also got some interesting games that complimented their console counterparts. Zone of the Enders: The Fist of Mars was one of my favorites.
@Herbalchunk1242 I gotta say after collecting the Animal Crossing amiibo cards I'm pretty burned out with trading cards so I'll probably go for the shadowbox, but if you're looking for something that'll be valuable someday then the Walmart cards are probably the better choice.
@sanderev Currently the prices in Japan (in yen) are: PS5: 60,478 PS5DE: 49,478 XBSX: 59,978 XBSS: 37,978
The XBSS is much cheaper than the XBSX, so the tradeoff of not being able to use physical media isn't as bad.
Incidentally, while looking up the prices I found out that XB had a price hike in Japan. I remember there being quite the uproar over the PS5 price hike but I don't recall reading anything about this.
@ndunsmo The fact that Nintendo was able to get Natsume to agree to put Harvest Moon for SNES on NSO gives me a tiny bit of hope we'll get Lufia 2 someday.
@Eel Yes, that is strange that all the blank entries show up for Paldea (up to Gholdengo) but not for Galar. Doesn't change the fact that Galar (and Hisui) weren't skipped, and I doubt all those blank entries for Paldea will be filled in anytime soon.
Incidentally, the storage box in PoGo had its limit increased just before Go Fest. You can now store 6800 Pokémon, which is more than you get with a paid subscription to Pokémon Home.
@VoidofLight @Eel Niantic didn't skip gen 8. There's been a few notable Galar events, like the last 2 elite raids featuring Regidrago and Regieleki. There's been a few Hisuian Pokémon (gen 8.5?) added as well.
Very excited for this! Really enjoyed Cing's DS output. Trace Memory especially made great use of the DS's unique (at the time) hardware at a time when many dismissed the touchscreen as just another crazy Nintendo gimmick that would get stomped by the PSP. Funny how that turned out!
@Kaspari_Villalobos I've learned to enjoy the outrage. People whined about me "enabling laziness" for supporting Pokémon SV and "enabling transphobia" for supporting Hogwarts Legacy. I played both anyway because I'm not going to even entertain the thought of denying myself something I enjoy just because Twitter freaks disapprove.
You claim that all hardware is down this week, but one quick look at last week's charts shows 2DS at 29 units sold. The 97 units sold this week is a clear contraction!
Good numbers for Pikmin 4, but it is a bit sad to see TotK barely keeping up with a game that came out in 2017 (which itself is a port of a 2014 game). It should pass 2 million physical by the end of the year.
@GamingFan4Lyf Overall XB numbers have hit 3000 several times before. There was even a week about a year ago when it outsold PS5. The only notable thing here is that Series X is outselling Series S.
I'll get the popcorn ready! Looking forward to the delicious bitter tears over Pokémon's continued success!
Pretty crazy we got/are getting Pokémon Sleep and Detective Pikachu Returns in the same year after so many naysayers had written them off as vaporware.
@SBandy1 You're welcome. Since you have better things to do now I'll leave you with a famous quote so that you might learn something about proof: "Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence." So no, me not proving my claim does not mean that I've disproven it. Have a nice day.
@SBandy1 He thought it was relevant enough to respond to me with it as justification of how it might be possible SF6 outsold TotK. It's right here in this topic.
And the only outcome to this discussion that actually would be sad is if I wasted my time accepting your request. I don't owe you proof of anything.
@SBandy1 Well he clearly though it would as he's trying to rationalize how it's still possible that SF6 did actually outsell TotK because of some anecdote about how there was only 1 physical copy at a big store in his area. Now if you're expecting me to reread 3 weeks of comments in previous sales articles then your request is rejected.
@SBandy1 Seriously. I didn't say anything about quality until after you posted "They are both great games that's all that matters." So no, I am not the one who brought up quality in this discussion.
@SBandy1 This is a Japanese sales article. I have no interest in discussing quality as it has nothing to do with the topic. Also have no interest in discussing UK sales for the same reason.
The first guy that responded to me certainly thought SF6 would outsell TotK in Japan. I recall seeing a few others as well.
Looking forward to seeing how FF16 does, which is the only thing even remotely on topic in your responses to me.
I’m sure a Zelda movie is inevitable at this point. I understand why Illumination isn’t the first choice of most people, but at least those Netflix rumors turned out to be false.
@SBandy1 I don’t know anything about the quality of SF6 but it goes without saying that sales doesn’t mean quality. I just think it’s hilarious that a number of people here were certain that TotK would be dethroned by now.
Now FF16 dethroning TotK is almost a foregone conclusion. I’m more interested if it can match FF15, which I believe launched at 500k.
@Serpenterror Did you not look at the top 10 closely enough to notice both the PS4 and PS5 versions of SF6 are there? So yeah, Sony would still be in this chart without D4. There’s no reason to think an XB exclusive D5 would be any different.
@MeloMan Nice to see others still remember Lufia! Taito published the games in Japan and they're now owned by Square Enix. The NA rights are probably a nightmare though. In NA Taito published the original, Natsume published Lufia 2 and The Legend Returns, and Atlus published Ruins of Lore. Seeing TLR on the 3DS VC gave me hope that we'd see Lufia 2 on the VC someday but unfortunately that never happened.

@FishyS Better yet (regarding Pokémon), Game Freak and Creatures are fully private companies, so they don't have investors/shareholders to answer to.
