Really excited for Kirby Tilt n Tumble! It's nice to finally be able to play this legally on a backlit screen, without having to resort to unofficial hardware or importing a Game Boy Light.
Edit: I forgot Kirby Tilt n Tumble was GBC only and doesn’t work on the Game Boy Light, so this is the first time you can play this on official hardware with a decent screen and without backwards controls.
@NinjaWaddleDee I mean, you literally said "Or, better yet. Make a PC launcher for your old games." That certainly sounds like port begging but thank you for the clarification.
LOL, I understand if this game isn't your thing but the negativity over this is pretty hilarious. And I thought Game Freak did a good job living rent-free in the minds of all the haters here!
@Kuksenkov Not sure why you're trying to shame someone who actually presents evidence to back up their arguments. And you clearly haven't been reading many comments if you think that was the most pretentious thing here. There's far more obnoxious attention seekers.
@Cashews Obviously you're going to get replies when you spread misinformation. You claimed "Nintendo is notorious for following huge hits with duds," which is factually incorrect. It's only happened once in their entire history: Wii to Wii U. Sure, it's technically "possible" that Switch 2 will be a dud in the same way that it's possible that the PS5 will suddenly have a surge in sales and overtake the Switch, but there's no good reason to predict that will happen based on any of the available data.
@johnvboy Nintendo did not release the DS out of necessity. GBA was only 3 years old when DS launched in 2004 and was still selling quite well. It even occasionally outsold PS3 all the way in 2007.
I also don't see any value in combining Wii U and 3DS sales together (or Wii and DS sales for that matter). The Wii U was unquestionably a total failure and lumping it in with the 3DS to get that pointless 90 million figure does nothing to change that fact.
@Cashews Nintendo’s handhelds have never been duds. Obviously nothing lasts forever but there’s no reason to think there’s anything particularly dangerous about Nintendo’s current situation.
I wonder how much the physical/digital ratio has changed since the Switch launched. In any case TotK’s sales are very impressive and it will likely outsell BotW in physical sales.
I’ve had auto updates turned off ever since I picked up Death Mark, since there’s an update that censors the game. No interest in the TotK glitch so I updated this game when prompted.
@eaglebob345 Fortunately Game Freak never made the mistake of selling out to another company or going public, so this bizarre fantasy of someone doing a hostile takeover of Pokémon will not come true.
@axelhander I’m not going to waste time rereading that nonsense. You clearly don’t know anything about morality if you think “fighting game preservation” falls under any reasonable definition of evil.
@BLD Wrong. I'm bringing up Japanese sales because Pokémon SV recently passed 5 million physical sold in Japan. Nothing to do with Zelda.
@tadams587 After you watch the credits there's some postgame content you unlock by talking to Geeta at the academy. Not sure how you could've unlocked 6 star raids on your other save as I believe this has always been required.
@DiamondJim What you describe can't possible be a "tipping point" because Pokémon has never had high production values to begin with. Their games have consistently resembled primitive console games from 2 generations ago: the GB, GBA, DS, 3DS, and Switch games each look like primitive NES, SNES, PS1, PS2, and PS3 games, respectively. People who care about performance never got into Pokémon.
@johnvboy Oh no, how will I ever regain the approval of the Pokémon "fandom" now! 😜 It really is amazing how entitled some people can be, expecting me to deny myself something I enjoy just so I can help them send a message (or whatever) to Game Freak.
@Dr_Lugae Well said. I think a lot of the animosity comes from people who expect Game Freak to "grow up" (AKA sell out) from their indie roots just because they hit it big with Pokémon, but for whatever reason they've decided to stay small (less than 200 employees). Seeing the state that Final Fantasy has been in the last 20 years, I'm glad GF didn't chase power.
Anyways, I fully expect a Switch 2 Pokémon game to resemble a PS4 launch title.
@GrailUK Indeed, a huge missed opportunity to report on two huge milestones being surpassed. Push Square actually did an article so here's the numbers for anyone interested:
@DarkScythe13 I agree that constructive criticism is a good thing. I have a few of my own, like the rampant cheating that GF hasn't taken the necessary steps to address. I have no problem with people that are criticizing a product they're purchased, as long as they're not misrepresenting anything. I can't fault the people that are here just to mock Game Freak either, because I'm here to mock the haters.
The ones I enjoy mocking the most: people who try to pressure me into joining their boycott by insulting me, and the people who want Nintendo to do some sort of hostile takeover of Pokémon from Game Freak. The idea I'd deny myself something I enjoy to appease people on the internet is hilarious, and hostile takeovers are one of the things I hate most about corporatism. Fortunately Game Freak never made the mistake of selling out and going public, so there's no outside investors that can kick the founders out of their own company.
Also, SV just hit 5 million physical sold in Japan! GF has no reason whatsoever to give the time of day to people in favor of hostile takeovers.
@Simon97 I haven't failed to understand anything. I brought up price where it was relevant (XB360/PS3). Wii launch price was cheaper than the PS2 launch price ($250 vs $300 in NA). If the Wii targeted the same audience as the PS2 then we would have seen PS2 sales slow just like how PS1 sales slowed when the PS2 launched. But PS2 sales didn't slow significantly, which means Wii wasn't selling to the same audience.
Your claim that Wii targeted a lower age than PS2 is wrong according to all the available data. Wii was very successful among an older audience that video game industry analysts previously thought was unobtainable.
Handhelds do occasionally compete with consoles, so the DS and PSP are absolutely relevant. The fall of console gaming directly correlates with the rise of handheld gaming in Japan.
This is a sales thread. Your opinions on what hardcore gamers like are irrelevant if the sales numbers don't back it up.
@hypercoyote I don't think that's an appropriate use of the word "unfinished" at all, but if the butchering of words like "literally" have taught me anything, people sure do love stretching definitions until they become utterly meaningless. Even a vague description like "unoptimized" is an infinitely more informative and accurate criticism of SV.
The link to "last week's charts" was written on April 27th; exactly three weeks ago. You guys never reported the post Golden Week numbers from last week.
Speaking of which, belated congrats to Pokémon SV and Splatoon 3 for reaching 5 million and 4 million physical sold in Japan, respectively! This actually happened last week but (as mentioned above) for some reason Nintendo Life neglected to report on that.
Amazing start for Tears of the Kingdom! Very few Zelda games have reached a million sold in Japan so for TotK to pass that in physical units alone already is incredible!
It's also good to see PS5 continue to do respectable numbers; it would be sad to see the home console market completely die in Japan. Looking forward to FF16 and FF7R-2 almost as much as TotK.
@Simon97 None of these points refute anything in my post, because like I said the PS2 only sold around 110 million after 6 years, which is when the PS3 launched. So the PS2's dominance vs GameCube/Xbox was not enough to keep it ahead of Switch when launch aligned.
It's the PS2's continued success vs XB360/PS3/Wii that will make it difficult to top. No other console is even close to selling 45 million after its successor launched, but Switch won't need to. If Nintendo meets its 15 million target for this FY then its only another 15 million they need, which is certainly doable even if Switch 2 launches next March.
Also, when I said Wii/DS appealed to different markets I was referring to the PS2's market. This is why the PS2 was able to continue selling well despite the success of the DS and Wii. The only direct competition PS2 had was from the XB360 and PS3, which were priced out of the mass market for several years after launch.
The PS2 had sold around 110 million after 6 years, so the Switch is tracking well ahead of it. What’ll make the PS2 difficult to surpass is the fact than next gen was so expensive at launch, so it continued to sell well several years into the life of the PS3 and XB360. Add the fact that the Wii and DS appealed to different markets and you have a unique situation that probably won’t repeat itself here, since I can’t see Nintendo charging $600 for Switch 2.
Of course, Switch only needs to sell 30 million in the time it took PS2 (post PS3 launch) to sell 45 million. Definitely possible.
@Maxz Glad to know I'm not the only one who can't stand movies that shoehorn the US military in where they don't belong. Avoided the Sonic movies for that very reason.
@RetroGames Was Grace Randolph the one whining about Cat Mario taking away Mario's dignity? Asking because I'm not going to even take the chance of giving that stupid review a click by looking it up myself.
@Eggman94 Aww, looks like he's banned. Bummer, I was looking forward to his reaction to the inevitable "5 million physical Pokémon SV sold in Japan" article later this week.
