@JohnnyMind I sympathize with emulation for the sake of preservation, but there's no legitimate reason for emulating a console currently on the market. Hope these thieves get buried.
It took longer than I thought it would, but Playstation 5 finally has an early year victory over Switch. Probably only due to Monster Hunter Wilds but it's nice to see home consoles aren't completely dead in Japan.
@DonutPie It's even crazier when you consider that the beginning of the year has historically been weak for Nintendo and strong for Sony. The past few years actually had PS5 outselling Switch for most (if not all) of January. The fact that PS5 can't maintain even that small amount of success really shows how bad things are now for Playstation in Japan.
@ZZalapski Technically, "generations" aren't even a thing that exists in any official capacity. They're a completely fanmade attempt to categorize the Pokemon series into neat little boxes, which failed the moment that the fandom claimed that the Switch game Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee were somehow in the same generation as the 3DS game Sun/Moon.
@Banjo- Alright, it was 1 week. My claim was still closer to the truth than your completely false claim that XB360 moved on before PS3 did, and the rest of your post about Sony's motivations is nothing more than baseless speculation with not a shred of evidence to back it up.
Furthermore the final XB360 revision was the Xbox 360 E, which came out after the final PS3 revision, the "super slim." So you're just making stuff up at this point.
@Edu23XWiiU PS2's most successful year was 2003, and by then standalone DVD players were as cheap as $50. The idea that PS2 sold significant numbers as a cheap DVD player may have been true when it launched in 2000, but again, the real reason PS2's total sales are so high is because it continued to sell incredibly well even after PS3 launched.
Switch pretty much has no chance of selling 40+ million after Switch 2 launches, but it's done so well so far that it won't have to. 3DS sold about 10 million after Switch launched, so if Switch can manage that then it will have no trouble surpassing PS2.
@Banjo- XB360 had one of the highest (if not the highest) failure rates of any console ever, so the idea that PS3s were "probably" purchased as replacements more often than XB360s is utterly laughable.
Also, PS3 was never "super cheap" throughout any of its revisions; on the contrary, PS3 was always more expensive than XB360 and your attempt to claim otherwise just proves once again that you have no idea what you're talking about.
Your claim about XB360 moving on first is also false. PS4 actually launched a few weeks before XB1, so the PS3 technically moved on first.
If Final Fantasy Legend gets excluded from your best Final Fantasy rankings due to not being a real Final Fantasy game, then Tetris Attack should be excluded here.
@Banjo- I doubt anyone has solid numbers on how many PS3s were purchased as replacements, but if you're suggesting that the PS3 had a bigger problem with defective units than the XB360 then you don't know what you're talking about.
The Switch far exceeds the PS2 when launch aligned, so the idea that PS2 is only ahead (worldwide) because it played DVDs is completely false. The real reason PS2 is ahead is because it sold somewhere between 40-50 million after the PS3 launched (and no one was buying PS2 as a cheap DVD player in 2006). I don't think Switch will do that well post Switch 2 launch (unless it costs $599), but I easily see it doing another 15 million.
A localization of Destiny 2 (the real one, not Eternia) would be nice. Maybe the Narikiri Dungeon spinoff of Phantasia too, since it was notable enough to get a full remake on PSP.
@Jhena In Japan Christmas is actually more of a couples' holiday, sort of like Valentine's Day in America. New Years is when families exchange gifts.
Nintendo always does very well in December, but then usually falls behind Sony in January. If I had to guess, I'd say it's because Switch is more popular to gift directly, but Playstation is more popular among the people who receive money/gift cards. I fully expect that to happen again, and for the usual suspects to fearmonger about how Nintendo is doomed yet again.
@Mariotag Ubisoft decided to make a Yasuke, a black man who lived in feudal Japan for a few years, the protagonist of their upcoming Assassin's Creed game. This is a strange choice given that previous AC games always had a fictional native of the region as the protagonist, but on top of that Ubisoft claimed that Yasuke's depiction as a samurai in the game is based on real life, when all the historical evidence shows that he was nothing more than a bodyguard and swordbearer for Nobunaga (essentially the samurai version of a knight's squire). And of course, the usual false accusations of gamers being racist followed when people rightly pointed out the blatant historical revisionism that Ubisoft was trying to pull.
And yes, it was Ubisoft that said "gamers need to get comfortable with not owning your games."
@Agenerationofgens This right here is probably the best reason ever for a company, like Nintendo, to remain completely debt free, despite the fearmongering of some economists about how debt is somehow a good thing. Those low interest rate loans that Blackrock and Vanguard pressure companies into qualifying for are irrelevant if you have no need for loans to begin with.
I would really like to be able to sort my wishlist by price. Right now it's sorted by the time the game was added, with no options at all on resorting it.
Filters to block out AI generated content would also be nice but I definitely don't want Nintendo censoring games on their platform like Sony does.
@KingofRedLions Of course. And there's no need for me to strive to be a better human being because I'm already good enough according to my own criteria (AKA the only criteria I care about), but even if there was the idea that only playing games you approve of makes one a better human being is one of the most self-important things I've ever read.
@-wc- Speaking of which, Maya Rogers actually calls them "RPG games" in one of the Tetris Forever interviews. An unfortunate cringe moment in an otherwise fantastic game/documentary.
@Divide_and_Wander It's pretty different. The mail appeal of Pocket Camp is decorating your campsite and watching the animals interact, which is much better than New Horizons where the animals barely interact with what you place on your island. But there's no terraforming in Pocket Camp and the gameplay is much simpler, and it just cycles through the same 3 events every month (garden, fishing tourney, and gyroidite scavenger hunt) so it gets very repetitive.
In any case, I highly recommend it at the discounted price of $10. Even the regular price is very reasonable for the amount of content that's built up over the years.
@Maxz Some of the collaborations, like the Sanrio inspired characters or the Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee event items will not be in Pocket Camp Complete, but almost everything will be there.
Congrats to SV for this massive achievement! SV and Legends are the most fun I've had with Pokémon since Emerald!
I think this means SV is now the second best selling game of all time in Japan, because the record was previously held by Pokemon RGB until Animal Crossing: New Horizons dethroned it a few years ago.
@AJWolfTill The lack of cloud saves is definitely my biggest complaint with mainline Pokémon and is far worse than any of the performance issues that the usual haters are always whining about. As far as integration with Pokémon Home (Bank was for the 3DS), that was actually added a while ago. You even get rewarded now with a shiny Meloetta if you transfer the full SV dex into Home.
So Japan is back to half the top 10 being old evergreen games. I have mixed feelings because while it is exciting to see Animal Crossing crawl its way to 8 million physical sold, it's also nice to have new things.
The Xbox sales are hilarious! There's a chance they actually fall below the PS4 again.
@BlublacMH Indeed, the world had changed. Now it's Korean developers making great games like Stellar Blade instead of Japanese developers. Hopefully the Japanese learn to resist these foreign influences sooner rather than later.
@TheSaneInsanity Indeed, there was even a final post that I didn't respond to, since I took a break from the internet to clear the first area in Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom. I mean, I do have the email notification so I know what was said, but no point in responding now.
@DripDropCop146 Those were some bangers, for sure! Here's another:
"Nintendo still hates its fans, and the people who buy their products anyway are still deranged."
Anyways, back on topic: Congrats again to Pokémon SV on hanging in there in the top 10! Most fun I've had with Pokémon since Emerald 20 years ago.
@ThatGuyWho Indeed, it is quite enjoyable, and I'm mature enough to own it. You, on the other hand, claim this conversation isn't worth having while continuing to have it. Honesty seems to be a problem for you.
@ThatGuyWho Thank you for your continued responses! For someone who claims this conversation isn't worth having, you sure do seem to enjoy continuing it.
@ThatGuyWho I have no interest in proving or disproving anything about "Nintendo fans," because I have the humility to understand that I speak only for myself. Maybe someday you'll have the emotional maturity to do the same.
@ThatGuyWho There's nothing in my post to indicate I was ever worried about anything, but to see a game with 5.4+ million physical sales still in the top 10 nearly 2 years after its release is a pleasant surprise and really drives the point home that the keyboard warriors are irrelevant to Nintendo.
The majority of people are unlikely to care about or even be aware of any of the nontraversies that you mentioned. So the idea that you speak for any of them is the height of delusion and simply confirms that you are obviously projecting when you call Nintendo fans deranged.
Now I will grant you that Nintendo's threat to take down Smash Bros streams at Evo was a horrible thing to do and is the one actually "scummy" thing related to your post, but Nintendo backed off on that one pretty fast so there's nothing even remotely resembling a "war" against the Smash community. It's also pretty funny you have to go back a decade to find something genuinely bad that Nintendo did.
It certainly is fun to "laugh and laugh and laugh." Thank you for giving me several laughs in this thread!
@johnedwin Your claim was that "few games have won this award that were not from nintendo" and that is factually incorrect. Moving the goalposts to something that barely resembles your original post just demonstrates your inability to admit to being wrong.
And as I said earlier the Japan Game Awards cover the Japanese government's fiscal year, which starts on April 1. Therefore TotK has every business being the 2024 winner and no amount of whining can change that.
@ThatGuyWho It brings me great joy to see the haters' call for a boycott of Pokémon completely fall on deaf ears! Comments like this are merely the icing on the cake.
Also, there is no "we." Regardless of what you think you "know" about Nintendo's depraved fans, you speak only for yourself.
@8bit-Man You are most welcome. Though there really wouldn't be any point for a list like this in the original article, because the article is specifically about the 2024 awards. I was just correcting a blatantly wrong claim in the comments.
Congratulations to Mario Kart 8! Of all the evergreen titles that still linger in the top 10 this and Animal Crossing are my favorites.
Also great to see Pokémon SV in the top 10! Especially after all the Pokémon haters showed up last week. Just goes to show how little Nintendo's general audience cares about the keyboard warriors.
@johnedwin Utterly false. Here are the winners for the past 15 years (with 2014 and 2021 having a tie):
2010: New Super Mario Bros. Wii 2011: Monster Hunter Portable 3rd 2012: Gravity Daze 2013: Animal Crossing: New Leaf 2014: Monster Hunter 4, Yo-kai Watch 2015: Yo-kai Watch 2 2016: Splatoon 2017: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2018: Monster Hunter: World 2019: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate 2020: Animal Crossing: New Horizons 2021: Ghost of Tsushima, Monster Hunter Rise 2022: Elden Ring 2023: Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak 2024: The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
Number of winners by publisher: Nintendo: 7 Capcom: 5 Sony: 2 Level-5: 2 FromSoftware: 1
Nintendo is number 1 but not far ahead of Capcom. Several non Nintendo games have won.
@Alpha008 The Japan Game Awards cover the Japanese fiscal year, so all games released in Japan from 2023 April 1 to 2024 March 31 are eligible for the 2024 awards.
@nessisonett And Elden Ring the year before, and Ghost of Tsushima (which ironically was not by a Japanese dev) before that...
