@nhSnork I think the problem lies more with Super Mario "Frost" Land. The first trailer we were even shown had Mario in what appeared to be a very arid region. It makes it tough to believe; my first thought when seeing that was "fake" and that's before someone even mentioned it was debunked.
@Moshugan Probably not since Nintendo usually reveals hardware information themselves. Going around them would damage any potential goodwill for Nvidia as well, which would be unwise as Nvidia wants to pursue a long term relationship with Nintendo.
@AVahne Frankly, I'm not surprised. AMD has been on a slump for awhile now so Nvidia doesn't really have that much competition (which is bad btw for consumers). It doesn't sound like it'd be very hard for them to blow people away.
@electrolite77 Not so much to take away from your point since I agree with 3rd parties not selling well on the Wii, No More Heroes was a flop on all platforms it was on arguably even more so on PS3 (and especially 360). Probably more because it was extremely niche (and gimmicky) rather than the platform choice itself. I think Muramasa (and Call of Duty as seen below) would be a better example as the Vita version outsold the Wii version by quite a bit (despite the much smaller install base).
It's unfortunate but the Wii actually did have a lot of quality 3rd party games, unfortunately very few actually sold well.
Before anyone tries to say Call of Duty, Modern Warfare Reflex edition only sold 1.51mil compared to the 9.31mil and 6.68mil for Modern Warfare on Xbox360 and PS3 respectively. This is even more telling when you realize that the Wii had a higher install base than both platforms combined.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE They did actually put some of their retail and virtual console games on sale about 2 weeks ago. I'd give it another week before they do it again, probably around Boxing Day.
Well that was an interesting article, thanks for suffering for us Thomas haha.
Btw wouldn't roughly half of the smart phone market here be an exaggeration? I think the last time I checked around 2/3 of the smartphone market was controlled by Android phones.
Hm...for combined sales those are pretty low for an FF game. I take it this doesn't take download sales into account?
@FlashmanHarry If I had to guess it's because it costs quite a bit more than a regular PS4 bundle and Japanese gamers don't see the value for the additional cost (4K at 30fps might not be compelling to them, also no 4K Blu-Ray player might be a turn off). Branding might be an issue as well (see Wii, Wii U). The average consumer might not even realize there's a difference between the two.
@Iggy-Koopa Quite frankly, I feel NVIDIA would do advertising on the Switch even if Nintendo doesn't. I doubt that NVIDIA would be comfortable putting out their major entry into the console market without advertisements.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE The article seems to suggest an "upgrade" to the Switch version rather than a "switch (cough) to the other platforms. It's possible they will charge extra to do so (not looking forward to that since the pound is worth more than the Canadian dollar).
@BLP_Software It would be heart breaking but I'm sure knowing Iwata he would try to spin it into a happy occasion (probably crack a joke or two) and tell us not to dwell on his death and rather be happy for the arrival of a new console with an optimistic outlook for Nintendo.
@BlastClaw Actually the ironic part is that Brexit actually happened due to people's ignorance...when polled a lot of the average British folk didn't even know what Brexit was and simply voted to pull out because they heard from their minister that it was a "good thing"
@PlywoodStick If you were a betting man would you say it's based off of the 1050 or ti version?
Also, if the other two companies aren't likely to put in anything remotely close to a 1070 doesn't that mean that the Switch will be fairly close spec-wise to the Scorpio and PS4VR (at least close enough that there won't be big degrades for ports)?
Not sure that actually makes sense but then again I don't know how cost effective this is for Nintendo or how smart of a business decision this is for the others.
@TadpoleSHero At the same time the Pokemon Company appears to have worse partner management by the looks of things. Look at all of the issues that plagued Pokemon Go. That's quite damaging for the brand and a little surprising they didn't step in sooner.
@Phil_Kavadias I'm not sure Red would really take offense. He seemed fairly humble in Origins after winning against Blue. In fact, Blue seemed to mellow out a little bit after losing, it seemed like he actually felt a little relieved that he lost.
@Anti-Matter I think the problem they have is that Pikachu is the only one that says its name in-game. Everything else just says an assortment of beeps, bzzt or cheeps rather than their name so it's odd that Pikachu would be the one exception.
@Miles_Edgeworth I think it might be due to them learning from Sticker Star. Intelligent Systems probably realized afterwards that having the combat system in what was effectively a puzzle game didn't work well.
They mostly likely wanted to keep combat in the series (hence why Sticker Star had combat) and so they may have opted to go with an adventure game style as it would mesh better?
@spyro202 That's probably cause Picross 2 is meant to be a retail game (though it does actually have a lower price than the average 3ds retail price US$29.99 vs US$39.99, your numbers are skewed since our Canadian dollar is still recovering). Gurumin is a download only game (and also a port of a 6 year old remake of a 12 year old game).
It's not to say the game isn't fun (it is, I have the Steam version). But there's a difference in costs in making new content versus making almost a straight port.
Anyone know if the tracks for the themes are up? Kind of want to see what music they've paired with each one before deciding on which I like most haha.
I wonder if Null will be able to change forms and in what manner. Seems like removing the helmet might change it's combat abilities and fighting style.
@Rect_Pola I don't think Nintendo has ever stealth launched a proper portable or console so chances are they will give a certain amount of time for people to know about the NX especially since it comes out in March.
We don't know anything at the moment which could be due to them making major changes to the console and getting manufacturer cooperation (this is speculation of course, could be anything really). They most likely wouldn't announce features if they couldn't get it into the console for sure.
For example, if they wanted to add VR into it they would need to get some other company's hardware for the glasses/display and then make changes to the console's inner workings if it wasn't originally powerful enough to support VR (meaning they would need to negotiate with their console manufacturer).
@Kirk Maybe it has something to do with the base materials?
From what I know, the regular new 3ds has dedicated cover plates (being swappable is a feature).
Perhaps that means that they are more durable to handle the potential wear and tear from swapping plates than the non-swappable xl plates. Being more durable might allow them to use better paint application methods for regular new 3ds'?
Another aspect could be, to cut costs with the xl, they may have simply decided to go with cheaper painting methods and exterior materials.
@Rect_Pola @Thomas Most likely not. Nintendo is a publicly traded company so they most likely have their financial statements made under IFRS.
This means that any income they make that isn't directly related to their regular operations must be separated from their regular income (like game and consoles sales for example).
That's why IFRS statements of comprehensive income have a section for "other comprehensive income" which is factored in after the "important" net income line.
And no you can't fudge something like that since the statement of comprehensive income would have to be approved by auditors before it can be released to the public. If the auditors went through with that they'd get into serious trouble and why risk it for something that wouldn't be that hard to track if the government decides they want to check that discrepancy?
@super08mario I'm pretty sure they can. My brother was cheating before (I warned him this could happen) but hasn't played the game for 2 weeks (he was cheating at that time). He received the ban notice yesterday when he logged back in for the first time in two weeks.
He mentioned that he would get soft banned for a certain period of time every time he teleported so I assume there had to be a way in-game already to track that.
@Dave24 Maybe she's adopted like Layton's other daughter Flora? Other possibilities could be that she's just using Layton's name (and might not be related to him at all) since he might be famous for his puzzle solving genius after all of his adventures or maybe Emmy is her mother (she did seem like she was close with Layton).
Hm...looking at that prototype I can see why they probably didn't end up proceeding. That branding looks like Sony all over. I doubt Nintendo would have liked that especially with Yamauchi in charge at that time.
@World It might be more open-ended. From the trailer, it seems that HMs "might" not be needed anymore with the Pokemon transportation service in place. It might suggest that you can tackle the islands in any particular order.
I'm surprised there hasn't been some evil-ish organization revealed yet though.
Hm...I have one of those though it's busted now. They were really common back in Hong Kong (and were loaded with hundreds of pirated games in different languages).
Even if it wasn't intended for piracy doesn't mean people won't find a way....
@Acein210 Not really. There's a reason why Kanto is even listed as a "region" in Pokemon Go. It simply means that it won't be the only gen in the app. Logically, it would be the first generation in simply cause it IS the 1st generation.
Anyone that even bothered to look at the achievements would have understood that immediately.
@Kirk The problem with the whole Nintendo pretty much "owns" the Pokémon Company is that The Pokémon Company generally does their own thing.
The Pokémon Company is also owned by 3 different companies, one of them being Nintendo. Gamefreak and Creatures Inc. are the other two.
This is one of the primary reasons why you don't really see Pokémon advertisements for cross over games and generally only have Pokémon advertising purely Pokémon games. It's also why you don't see Pokémon in other Nintendo first party games like the Mario Kart series despite it having crossovers from other Nintendo series (like Zelda).
Judging by the actual visual polish in Miitomo compared to Pokémon Go, I'd say that Nintendo was only directly involved in Miitomo. Nintendo has also done some pretty neat AR stuff before, some of it included for free with 3DSs and some being built into their own games so I doubt the results would have been the same if they were actually involved in the development process. Pokémon Go is just another case of The Pokémon Company doing their own thing as part of their advertising duties.
More likely than not, Nintendo is stepping on eggshells trying to not piss off the other two holders. If Gamefreak was okay with it, I don't think Nintendo would really be able to say anything. Wouldn't want to piss off the developers of one of their biggest cash cows. The whole respect thing is also very big in Japan and Nintendo is an old company.
@Adamario That doesn't factor in that most of the actual audience for the Gamecube were probably core Nintendo gamers. The 3DS comparatively, would have a lot more so-called "casuals" compared to the Gamecube as it would be coming off of the DS's success and doesn't have as big of hardware change as with the Wii->Wii U (in terms of controls). The lower cost of a portable would also contribute to more non-core gamers.
@DiscoGentleman VG Chartz seems to indicate that Sticker Star has sold the same number of copies as Thousand Year Door. In fact, the only region where Thousand Year Door has sold more is in North America. Europe and Japan have higher sales for Sticker Star by a considerable amount too.
@TheWPCTraveler You mean take a glance at it to see if the game is broken or not? I seriously doubt anyone that needs to supervise that many projects would be able to take a long enough glance at the games, not that I would expect that as those people themselves have their OWN projects to look after as well.
Unless it's a major series like a main Mario or Zelda game, which this is not, the studio will be left to their own devices. Adding to the fact that people KEEP buying these games regardless of the quality the studio themselves are not going to see a problem.
And supervising is NOT the same as developing something. Quite frankly, this can amount to simply checking if funds are sufficient (and budgets aren't getting inflated), project milestones are being reached at appropriate times, no inappropriate material is being tossed in, etc.
It's not like the main Nintendo divisions have actually ever developed or been closely involved with a spin-off game like Mario Party. The only exceptions of direct intervention happening have been in Pokémon Silver/Gold and Super Smash Bros Melee where Iwata took it upon himself to help with the coding of those games.
There would be absolutely no point in having separate studios at all if management had to step in EVERY SINGLE time. The studios HAVE to have a certain level of autonomy and be trusted that they can manage their own games.
@wiggleronacid Mario Party has been developed by Hudson Soft and only been developed by Hudson Soft.
Even the company, ND Soft that took over since Hudson Soft was shut down, is essentially made up of ex-Hudson Soft staff. That subsidiary is dedicated to developing the Mario Party games. Just like how Intelligent Systems is the dedicated studio for Fire Emblem and the Paper Mario series.
A lot of people posting here have no idea how game development works especially within Nintendo. Most major series in the company have their own dedicated studio. So blaming the ENTIRE company for how one studio handles the game makes very little sense. That's like saying people blaming Intelligent Systems (or any other studio not related to development of a series) if a bad PIKMIN game is ever created.
Or worse people blaming Nintendo for how the Mario Golf, Mario Tennis or even Pokemon games are developed (each one of those series is developed by a contracted 3rd party ie Camelot and GameFreak).
@Einherjar The strange thing about Xenoblade Chronicles X is that the character you created DID have his/her own voice. In combat, Cross actually said things depending on the soul voices you triggered (the blurbs were different depending on your chosen voice for character creation). It just made things feel weirder for cut scenes.
Maybe every version of Cross freezes up when it comes to talking to other people
A lot of people seem to be missing the point here. It really shouldn't be a question of whether or not Miyamoto retires or not.
There are a lot of MUCH bigger problems that need to be dealt with at HQ before even going to such minor issues with Miyamoto.
For one, plenty of the developers at the company really need to either grow a backbone or actually think about whom their target audience is. A lot of things people are criticising him for are not "decisions" and rather "suggestions" he makes. Just looking at any of the past interviews will verify this aspect.
Sticker Star is actually a VERY good example of this. He suggested to Intelligent Studios about trying to make a game with only Mario characters and a less complicated storyline. Rather than think about whom their target market was, it seems the studio straight up agreed to do this and then proceeded to also "simplify" the gameplay which I'm pretty sure Miyamoto didn't suggest. He may have made a mention to the gameplay being "good" (after it was changed to a puzzle game) but I doubt a man in a position as high up as himself would have been able to truly play the game from start to finish given his limited time for managing other games at the same time.
There's simply too much hero worship in the company; that needs to change before anything else is done. The developers really need to learn to think for themselves.
The F-Zero comment from him is silly as it's doubtful a control change would bring more people into the series. The biggest problem with that series is simply it's just really niche. If they want to make it have a wider target audience, they should probably just make it a budget title sold at a lower price. A full retail game for it would just cost too much with some of the things the core fan base has been clamouring for like full HD effects, resolution, top of the line graphics, frame rate, and content amount especially considering the series doesn't really sell a lot of copies at least not at a level where it would be worth that kind of effort. Making a budget title would attract the curiosity of other people hopefully increasing the fan base size and then a more fleshed out title could be produced.
@Parkour_LMan Well according to the picture Thomas has in the article, European eShop has the tax included as well for the Gold Coin tiers. So potentially after taxes you could be above the 69.99 euros tier.
Unfortunately, the Canadian eShop seems to EXCLUDE taxes from the gold coin tiers

Re: Mario Party Star Rush is Coming to 3DS on 4th November
Re: E3 2016: Full Title Of Wii U And NX Legend Of Zelda Revealed
Does anyone else notice how rusty and damaged the Master Sword looks?
I thought the Master Sword generally doesn't corrode in that fashion.

@SLIGEACH_EIRE Metroid: Other M 2
Re: E3 2016: Nintendo E3 Zelda Badge Appears to Suggest Male and Female Link
@Einherjar The strange thing about Xenoblade Chronicles X is that the character you created DID have his/her own voice. In combat, Cross actually said things depending on the soul voices you triggered (the blurbs were different depending on your chosen voice for character creation). It just made things feel weirder for cut scenes.
Maybe every version of Cross freezes up when it comes to talking to other people
Re: Review: Kirby: Planet Robobot (3DS)
@Tuulenpoika That was after A LOT of experimentation before they got to this point though.
Just pointing out it didn't simply happen overnight. Kirby's definitely had a number of so so games and misses before arriving at this point.
Re: Nintendo Publishes Part Two of the Miyamoto and Hayashi Star Fox Zero Interview
Re: May Issue of CoroCoro Magazine to Bring Huge Scoop on Pokémon Sun and Moon
@Socar If it has Levitate as it's ability, it's only weakness would be Fire.
Fairy is weak to Poison and Steel
Steel is weak to Ground, Fighting and Fire
Fairy resists Fighting; Steel negates Poison and resists Steel;
Levitate negates Ground
It seems to resist 9 types and negates 3 types (if ability is Levitate).
Weakness: Fire
Neutral: Electric, Fighting, Ghost, Water, and Steel
Re: Guide: Getting Started With My Nintendo
@Parkour_LMan Well according to the picture Thomas has in the article, European eShop has the tax included as well for the Gold Coin tiers. So potentially after taxes you could be above the 69.99 euros tier.
Unfortunately, the Canadian eShop seems to EXCLUDE taxes from the gold coin tiers
