@Anti-Matter It would be nice if there was a watermelon theme. Seems like it would work pretty well considering the placement of the Joycon's and the console. The console would probably work fairly with two tone variations thanks to the design, kind of tired of seeing single tone consoles really.
@thesilverbrick I'm not so sure it sold better than the Wii U version of the game.
A check on vgchartz is showing that the Wii U version of the game has outsold the portable version both in Japan and globally (with global sales being almost double that of the 3DS sales)
It would need to sell another 1.6 million copies or so to beat out the Wii U version's sales.
@LegendOfPokemon Well the Wii U version of the game sold almost double that of the 3DS, and the 3DS has a much bigger base. Any competent marketing team would realize that the Wii U version actually sold better, if using a proportional comparison. Profitability however, is most likely much higher for the 3DS version though since it's a watered down port.
@ThomasBW84 Hey Thomas I'm not sure if you will find this info useful but apparently for Yooka Laylee, all of the original Wii U backers will be eligble to upgrade to the Switch version of the game free of charge.
@Raylax Official licensed stuff is always higher priced in general (unless a 3rd party decides they want to make super premium stuff). Also, seems consistent with Hori's pricing for their other products.
If I bought an "official" phone charger I guarantee you it would be more expensive than a generic one. Actually, I could probably find one that has MORE functionality AND is cheaper.
The reason why any of these companies do things like this is because there will always be consumers that believe that a brand makes or breaks the quality of things (they might do more testing for reliability for example) and will be willing to pay a premium for it. Not always the case in the real world though (see exploding Samsung and Sony batteries).
I remember in another article about SD cards there was someone that mentioned they would only buy SD cards from two brands because they believed them to be the only trustworthy brands. That's what a lot of people thought about EVGA too...until they screwed up with their version of the GTX1060.
@MegaMari0 And that's why a team of yes-men is always a bad thing in the creative industries. Hopefully, someone in Nintendo's management takes notice and either trains them to avoid that can of thinking or if worse comes to worse starts replacing people at IS.
Well I guess there must be a certain amount of trust between Miyamoto and his students too for them to have such debates.
@Yorumi Like you mentioned, big 3rd parties. I wouldn't be surprised if companies like Capcom are the reason we have the subscription fee. For a lot of the online MH games on consoles Capcom charged an online fee for players in Japan. If I remember right Nintendo pretty much ate the costs for NA and Europe regions themselves when the games actually came out in those areas.
Factoring in that Nintendo is also the smallest (and has the least amount of bargaining power) of the "big 3" there are probably a lot more companies with considerable clout that Nintendo has to deal with. The difference is that Sony can charge a subscription fee because they feel like it (not that many publishers are anywhere near as big as them) versus Nintendo whom being much smaller in size essentially has their hand forced.
That's one of the reasons why running more than one line of business is advantageous. You can leverage your overall size when it comes to negotiations. And let's face it, a company like Microsoft or Sony is MASSIVE when you factor in all of their lines of business.
@Smokingspoon Where are you getting it from? It's only about $400 base value for me (I'm in Ontario).
I'm getting it from EB with a Wii U tradein so that knocks off $150 off the price tag as well which comes down to $250. Plus EB only charges taxes for the portion that wasn't paid by credit (ie $250 * 13%)
@SLIGEACH_EIRE I'm not so sure about it being close. The Wii version Twilight Princess for example sold almost 5.5 million more than the Gamecube version. When we factor in that the Gamecube actually had a larger fanbase at the end of its lifespan compared to the Wii U I have a pretty good feeling that it won't even be close.
This isn't even factoring in yet that BoTW is the only piece of Nintendo software available on launch day for the Switch (so far).
Frankly, I'm not really surprised. Most Mario themed spinoffs are not done internally anyways (barring Mario Kart [EAD] and Paper Mario [Intelligent Systems]). They are outsourced to developers like Camelot (like this project), Namco (also developing this) or Square Enix.
Wouldn't be surprised if Namco is the one handling the card production (Animal Crossings' cards at least look consistent art-wise across the board so it's hard to believe that Nintendo is also in charge of these cards, unless as people pointed out that it's intentional and meant to pay homage to previous sports games).
@Lizuka @cheonsacz At one point Harvest Moon changed developers. Story of Seasons is developed by the original developers of Harvest Moon. The newer Harvest Moon games have been and are being developed by the previous publisher Natsume (which is why Marvelous had to change the name of their series to Story of Seasons).
@thesilverbrick I can see Wii games working providing that they thought about how to translate the Joy-Con motion controllers while they were in development (the left one apparently has pointer capabilities as well).
Gamecube is possible but sounds like in practice fairly annoying for the player (the Wii U pro controller had both L1 and L2 buttons for example). I'm not sure if the Switch controllers have two shoulder buttons on both sides. If someone could link a picture of the back of the controller that would be awesome.
Wii U remains up in the air as I don't believe Nintendo has actually mentioned if you can use both the TV and the console independently? Though then again if you have to dock the console to use it on the TV then that seems pretty unlikely (unless they add a patch later on that integrates a virtual Wii U mode similar to what they did on the Wii U for the Wii, effectively allowing the console to act differently while being in that mode).
I think we really need to hear from Nintendo again soon. Reggie commented about previous purchases not too long ago and to wait for further info on that.
I wonder what the special bonus will be? Will it be unbundled with poop keychains?
Hopefully, the game breaking kinks will have been worked out. The game crashed so many times on my Wii U whenever I used the Dice Rooms.
Also, is anyone else having issues with getting rid of notifications? I'm pretty sure I've read the associated comments and also hit the "X" but the moment I go to another screen or refresh the notifications come back.
@Nintendofan83 Puyo Puyo is actually priced the way it is at retail due to the Switch retail version being a special edition (comes with keychains). The digital version is the exact same price as the PS4's one.
Also, anyone complaining about remastered games should really look at the competition as well for how the prices were like at their respective releases. Is it right? Debatable. Is it a widely adopted practice for hardware developers? Yes and not debatable.
@Peach64 Expectations for a Switch port/same generation game may have also hurt sales.
Also, didn't they say in a shareholders' meeting that Pokémon Go wouldn't really affect their profit?. The share price dropped considerably after that statement. Doesn't sound like the kind of thing you would tell (or want to tell) your investors if you really believed that a release would increase your profits.
@maceng On the optimization aspect, that's actually a pretty good job considering how much time Nintendo usually gives developers in terms of notice for their console launches and we also have to look at how long the PS4 has been on the market for. When DQ Heroes 2 came out, the PS4 had been on the market already for 3 years AND the engine had already been created (when they worked on the first one).
If anything @PlywoodStick may be onto something with developers still being inexperienced.
The most telling change with a game of this type is IF there will be a difference in number of enemies and if so will it be extremely noticeable.
@Rhydas It really depends on what range the fps drops at and how much of a drop it is. Also depends on what kind of scene you're playing through.
Say if I was playing through a thick foggy area (ie not many noticeable, defined edges) compared to a vast cityscape, if a FPS drop happened it would be more noticeable in the latter.
Or if a fps drop happened during a slow motion scene compared to a normal scene.
Generally speaking, I don't find small drops while in 60fps range noticeable unless I'm playing online (compounded with latency) or I'm playing some game heavy on slow motion or twitch action (ie shooters). As you can imagine though even a small drop will be very noticeable when playing a shooter online.
@PlywoodStick So would that mean that SE is also doing an amateurish job? I'm a bit curious on this since it seems DQ Heroes 2 also has some lighting differences.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE So tiny that they mentioned in an investor meeting that it would have negligible impact on their bottom line (of course stock price fell dramatically afterwards).
By the looks of things, it might be because there's only a special edition version at launch for Switch physical (comes with two puyo-puyo and tetris themed keychains).
There's no mention that the PS4 version is a special edition.
@Spoony_Tech At the same time Gearbox hasn't exactly been the most reputable developer (see definition for "not at all"). It goes both ways and frankly Gearbox itself is not a good example.
Bioware/EA would be a much better example since we haven't seen any good news regarding either Dragon Age or Mass Effect.
@mateq It's entirely possible it may be a regional issue.
I've sent them a DSi (dead pixel problem) and a 3DS (hinge problems) for repair before. I was pleasantly surprised when they completely replaced both of them.
I'm located in NA though so maybe that has something to do with it.
@Spoony_Tech Wasn't sure if you wanted to split it so I left the 2 pack option out in the previous post. It's also a bit pricier at $95 and a bit slower (the 200GB is 90MB/s, the dual pack cards have up to 80MB/s).
Looks like Samsung isn't quite as competitive on pricing compared to Sandisk. Couldn't really find a lower price for them for a similar storage size.
EDIT: Why do I keep doing that?! Sigh...I keep forgetting to put the "a" in front of singular nouns. I should probably go back to bed haha
EDIT: Anyone reading this, be especially careful about multi packs (like Sandisk has). From checking the speeds the microSDs in the multi packs are generally a lot slower than the ones you buy solo. Also, be careful as some brands have both 512MB and 512GB microSDs.
A lot better deal than the previous card link I put up, if anyone needs a microSD card.
EDIT: Also, comes with a free 64GB microSD.
EDIT2: Free shipping as well by the looks of it.
EDIT3: Looking up the website does not come up with promising results. It looks like they've had numerous problems with "fake" cards. Thanks @kevfrei for pointing that out. The Sandisk options I mentioned before remain the cheapest legitimate cards from a verified dealer (ie Amazon themselves).
@motorhue Well for one we need to do an apples to apples comparison.
Taking the PS4 internal as an example, it actually has a lower average read speed than a regular hard drive you can buy on the market (read speed on the drive is more comparable to that of a mid-high end SD card).
Also, today's SD cards go into the 1,000,000 range in terms of reads. That would never be used up under normal wear and tear of the console during it's lifespan.
To take a real world comparison: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA1K63YZ7932&cm_re=micro_sd--20-173-111--Product
That card is actually FASTER than the hard drive in the PS4 (Xbox One uses a similar hard drive). Also, 70% off at the moment in case anyone needs a MicroSD
@Rhydas Both DQ10 and 11 were confirmed during the announcement. That and without region lock anymore you can pick it up regardless of whether or not it gets localized.
@Azikira The Heroes compilation currently has a listed date for North America on Amazon. DQ10 and DQ11 aren't dated for outside of Japan yet. I feel that kind of info will probably come out during E3 maybe?
@impurekind @rjejr Actually no. There have been worse lineups on launch day. In fact, both Sony and Microsoft also had pretty mediocre lineups on release for Xbox One and PS4. It seems to be a trend in general for more recent console releases.
Any major 3rd party differences seem to be more affected by timing (ie new Call of Duty games usually being Holiday season titles).
@PlywoodStick I think you may have misinterpreted what both of us were talking about. We meant the games being localized outside of Japan not the actual plot location.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Well SMT4 and SMT4: Apocalypse left Japan and those two were mainline games. Both Devil Survivor games (remake and the sequel) made it out of Japan as well. Even Soul Hackers made it out.
Chances are it'll be localized and even if it isn't it'll be importable since no region lock.
@retro_player_22 It's possible but judging by how they named SMT4's sequel it'll probably be loosely related to SMT4 Apocalypse at best.
@nhSnork Well it wouldn't be the first time Mario has messed around with ice. I believe he's had both an ice fireball power up and skating power up (from riding inside an ice skate). There's also the penguin suit that effectively does both.
They should add a snowball fight mode for multiplayer =D
You guys might be onto something. After the popularity of Splatoon, I wouldn't be surprised if they added a streaming/recording button to their controllers.

@Lizuka Yeah it looks like Marvelous was still developing under the Harvest Moon brand at that point.

Re: Guide: A Breakdown of Confirmed Nintendo Switch Games and Release Dates
@Rhydas Both DQ10 and 11 were confirmed during the announcement. That and without region lock anymore you can pick it up regardless of whether or not it gets localized.
@Azikira The Heroes compilation currently has a listed date for North America on Amazon. DQ10 and DQ11 aren't dated for outside of Japan yet. I feel that kind of info will probably come out during E3 maybe?
Re: Guide: A Breakdown of Confirmed Nintendo Switch Games and Release Dates
@rjejr That doesn't change the fact that the original point was off the mark.
Re: Guide: A Breakdown of Confirmed Nintendo Switch Games and Release Dates
@impurekind @rjejr Actually no. There have been worse lineups on launch day. In fact, both Sony and Microsoft also had pretty mediocre lineups on release for Xbox One and PS4. It seems to be a trend in general for more recent console releases.
Any major 3rd party differences seem to be more affected by timing (ie new Call of Duty games usually being Holiday season titles).
Re: Atlus Is Bringing Shin Megami Tensei To Nintendo Switch
@Noelemahc Ah that sucks. I'm in North America so localization hasn't really been an issue for me so far with SMT.
Re: Atlus Is Bringing Shin Megami Tensei To Nintendo Switch
@PlywoodStick I think you may have misinterpreted what both of us were talking about. We meant the games being localized outside of Japan not the actual plot location.
Re: Square Enix Announces Project Octopath Traveler For Nintendo Switch
@AlexSora89 They straight up said that both games were coming in the presentation. I guess you must have missed that part.
Re: Square Enix Announces Project Octopath Traveler For Nintendo Switch
@AlexSora89 if that was the case wouldn't they have not released both DQ10 and 11 on the Switch?
Re: Atlus Is Bringing Shin Megami Tensei To Nintendo Switch
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Well SMT4 and SMT4: Apocalypse left Japan and those two were mainline games. Both Devil Survivor games (remake and the sequel) made it out of Japan as well. Even Soul Hackers made it out.
Chances are it'll be localized and even if it isn't it'll be importable since no region lock.
@retro_player_22 It's possible but judging by how they named SMT4's sequel it'll probably be loosely related to SMT4 Apocalypse at best.
Re: Nintendo Switch Release Date And Retail Price Confirmed, Region Locking Is Out
@Nico07 if it's handled the same way Wii Sports was, it'll be sold as a standalone in Japan and will be a pack in outside of Japan
Re: Best Buy Rumour Reinforces Talk of $250 Nintendo Switch Price
@nhSnork Well it wouldn't be the first time Mario has messed around with ice. I believe he's had both an ice fireball power up and skating power up (from riding inside an ice skate). There's also the penguin suit that effectively does both.
They should add a snowball fight mode for multiplayer =D
Re: Hori Has A Wide Range Of Nintendo Switch Accessories On The Way
@jswhitfield8 @Dr_Lugae
You guys might be onto something. After the popularity of Splatoon, I wouldn't be surprised if they added a streaming/recording button to their controllers.
