One common topic that's come up in North American Nintendo Download comments sections has been "where's Pokémon Snap?" It arrived on the Wii U Virtual Console in Europe back in August 2016, so there's been an unsurprising desire to see the much-loved N64 title in NA.
Well, the wait seems to be almost over, with Nintendo's game page for the title pegging it for a 5th January release; this week's download update. The quirky on-rails-shooter-nature-camera-sim-thing of a game will finally get into focus on Nintendo's current-gen retro service. We enjoyed it in our most recent review, too.
Sometimes these listings can end up being wrong, but in most cases accurately reflect upcoming download releases.
So, if this does arrive, how many of you North American Pokémon fans are planning to snap this up for $9.99?
With thanks to Ryan Millar for the heads up.

It's about time! I was looking for this just the other day thinking it had already released stateside. Kids will love it!
I'm at school right now and trying really hard not to scream.
ABOUT FREAKING TIME!!
Whelp I'm taking off work
Just looked through their website and saw the new Yoshi game for 3ds is going to be $50. Anyone know why?
This game takes like 1 hour to beat.
I'll buy this tomorrow and then I'll just be waiting for 2 more Wii U VC releases to consider my desired collection complete:
Star Fox 64
Ogre Battle 64
@amishpyrate it comes with an Amiibo
The Wii U virtual console has been very lackluster from start to finish :s
Seems mad they didnt release it when Pokemon Go was running wild and people were buying 3DS's to play Pokemon games again.
Oh well, all part of Nintendo's master plan..... XD
@Spoony_Tech Love this game. We went into Wii mode and played it there recently. It is very short, but that's fine. Didn't quite finish it again yet. More than anything the game format is full of potential and should have been explored again. Especially with the Wii U... but I guess no user base means a project like that would fall off the drawing board.
They should remake the game with the wii u using the gamepad. That will be perfect with the gamepad. OH well nintendo never listen
Cool! I will be picking this up. Still wish that there had been a sequel...the Wiiu was perfect for it.
Ive had this as a .wad for years. Doesnt excite me in any way .
If only it was a sequel.
@Clownshoes It's more a budget title and yes, short, but while the environments are blocky and nondescript the pokémon are great and fun to reveal as you scramble to take a decent picture. Just played it a few weeks ago. Holds up better than most because the concept really hasn't been tried successfully since. Best played with a couple of people near you yelling out what to do and what they see.
OH MY GOSH, IT'S FINALLY HERE!!!!
Oh wow, that took long enough.
@amishpyrate Was it the Canadian site? I know that most games are usually $10 or so higher for us than the US dollar amount.
@leo13 Seconded. I also would like to add Bomberman Hero to that. Since we're making requests, throw Secret of Mana on there too.
I'll be picking this up, though I'm curious how the Wii U's existing VC will be used for the Switch.
@aaronsullivan I was looking at my Wii U last night, blue light was on calling home, and thinking maybe it's time to turn the thing off, just wasting electricity.
So now they release Snap, after the Wii U is dead, perfect timing as always Nintendo.
@Ernest_The_Crab ha, just noticed it was. The link on this page sent me to their site. Just checked the American site and sure enough, it's $40 w/o amiibo and $50 with. thanks and good catch
FINALLY!!
At Last! I can't believe they took so damn long
Not my favorite Pokemon spin off from the N64 era, but it's fun for what it is. A sequel, even a small budget one, should have been obvious on Wii U to actually make use of the game pad and the camera in it. But no dice, I guess.
Oh, snap!
I've decided to not buy anymore N64 games on VC. At least for a couple of years. Got my N64 and 40 games in loft if needed but also on the chance they release a N64 mini in 2018. The games they release on VC will end up on it if they do anyway.
It's about time! I'll for sure try to pick this up this weekend!
Wow...bold move to drop this even as the last nails in the Wii U's coffin are being hammered in. Still, if it's just a simple VC port, it's a huge missed opportunity to not utilize the gamepad's motion features in more of a remaster type release. Nintendo....sometimes you guys make no sense...
Finally! This game will only be a snap away!
Support old 3ds models! Either put SNES on older 3ds or release more VC that it can play, plain and simple!
Cool. Hopefully Nintendo will put Pokemon Puzzle League on Wii U VC and Pokemon Pinball on 3DS VC as well.
Finally I can save state right before the pics I always mess up. Lol
I love that I can play this game start to finish in one sitting. Also, Wii-U would have been a good system for a reboot of this spin-off, but Switch would be better. Make it happen.
I just used a dsi card to get Wii points to get VC games on my Wii U. 😭 I wish I knew this on Saturday. Now I only have Yoshi story and chrono trigger. I would have rather dropped the Yoshi game.
Ooh...Pokemon Snap ?
Well, I will take a look first.
This game is somewhat over-rated, but definitely a nice treat to finally see it on the eshop nonetheless.
@motaman Some people like to own stuff legitimately.
@motaman It's still exciting news for people who don't want to break the law.
Oh snap, yes! Can't wait for this!
The WiiU was perfect for a sequel.
Instead you get to the play the game you've already paid for before, possibly twice.
Need a new one for Switch.
Its incredible people are getting excited for a 18 year old game thats available on different platforms for several years. This "game" isnt that fun, in my opinion. Just a way to kill a hour of time.
Posting screen shots onto miiverse with this game will be fun. Can't wait to play this again!
Cool, always wanted to play Pokemon Snap. I'll probably get it as soon as it gets rerelease here.
@Xaessya So much this^ The original Wii VC was pretty bad for a while too. It took 2-3 years for it to finally pick up steam and get going. I'm sure they'll continue to waste the VC potential on Switch too
Just got the original N64 cartridge =/
Good lord, about time. Here's hoping our Virtual consoles transfer to the NX with at least a discount (like with wii to wii U), I'm picking this up pronto.
@GameOtaku While I do agree that the original 3DS hasn't received any love lately, I don't know what Virtual Console games are left to release for it. They've already said that the original model can't acceptably run SNES games, so that's out of the question. And as far as other games, I can't think of many (if any) first party NES or GameBoy games left that aren't already available (with the exception of Pokémon Gold and Silver). It's one thing if you have specific games you're looking for, but just simply demanding more Virtual Console games doesn't make any sense, because there aren't many left.
It's nice to see a new N64 game on the eShop each week. Just this past month, we got Majora's Mask, Excitebike 64, Mario Party 2, and Mario Kart 64. Here's hoping for Star Fox 64 and F-Zero X (with the dead zone fix) in the near future.
They took too long for this game to get here so I bought it the cartridge for the N64 at a local used games store. Good that they finally got it but I won't be getting it.
@thesilverbrick
Castlevania legends, Double Dragon 3, bayou Billy , star tropics 1 & 2, the tg16 games. And let's be real SNES games can run excellent on old 3ds, who cares about going to home screen?
@Clownshoes
Really? I remember Pokémon Stadium being the only bad Pokémon game on N64, while Pokémon Snap was and still is brilliant.
