UK physical chart data is now in for the week ending 12th December, revealing that Animal Crossing: New Horizons is once again Nintendo's highest-placed title.
As reported by GamesIndustry.biz, New Horizons' sales have been consistently rising week-on-week for more than a month at this point (this week saw an 8% rise), and it was "close" to overtaking Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War in second place. The report also notes that Nintendo's popular life-sim will likely end up being the UK's second best-selling boxed game of 2020, behind FIFA 21.
This week's number one spot, however, has predicatbly gone to CD Projekt's Cyberpunk 2077. The hotly anticipated sci-fi RPG managed to achieve higher opening-week sales than The Last of Us Part II, but again, couldn't match FIFA 21 in that same statistic.
Here's a look at this week's top ten all formats chart:
Last Week | This Week | Title |
---|---|---|
- | 1 | Cyberpunk 2077 |
2 | 2 | Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War |
3 | 3 | Animal Crossing: New Horizons |
4 | 4 | Assassin's Creed Valhalla |
1 | 5 | FIFA 21 |
7 | 6 | Just Dance 2021 |
5 | 7 | Mario Kart 8 Deluxe |
6 | 8 | Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales |
8 | 9 | Minecraft (Switch Edition) |
9 | 10 | Super Mario 3D All-Stars |

Very much looking forward to playing cyberpunk when a native PS5 version is released and I can pick up a PS5 next year.
It definitely doesn’t deserve to be number 1 at the moment based on all the footage I have seen of the terrible console build.
Really shocking behaviour by the devs. Deliberately deceiving day 1 purchasers to maximise sales.
Just Dance 2021 ads have been absolutely pastered across Sky One, Witness, Atlantic over the last few weeks (Nintendo/Smyths).
If World of Warcraft was videogaming crack, then Animal Crossing must be videogaming valium.
Cyberscam.
Another great week for Switch.
Was always gonna be Cyberpunk.
@Hewitt And here I am bouncing back and forth between WoW and Animal Crossing throughout the day every day.
Don’t think cyberpunk will be top next week
But like,I genuinely like animal crossing better than cyberpunk, but that’s just my opinion. Cold War knows it’s place though. Not giving any bad reputations, it’s just my opinion
@sandman89 yeah, from all the ps4 and Xbox one reports on the game it might drop to number three with cold war on one and acnh in second, but just my thought.
I was interested in Cyberpunk but after watching an hour of footage or so it looked just really boring. Given that it’s CD Projekt Red, I’d expect a great world and mediocre gameplay but the world looked uninteresting....
Wonder how many % of those people who bought Cyberpunk at launch regret it
Unless you have a RTX30xx, you're missing most of the experience. I'm not paying £45+ and downloading 70GB + patches to run on a GTX1070.
If the refunds next week are higher than the sales, can Cyberpunk even reach negative numbers?
Seeing animal crossing selling so we'll make me really curious about it, but I played one on DS for a short time and found it boring as hell. I had no idea what the aim of the game was, so I'm not sure it's made for me
Wow UK must be PC country.
(It’s a joke)
@meeto_1 Thats what happens though when a game is hyped for over 6 years.
Just to put that into slightly better perspective, Animal Crossing released almost 9 months ago, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe released 2.5 years ago (technically 5.5 years ago). Yet they are outperforming recent releases with the exception of two games.
@Ryu_Niiyama
95% of those physical sales for Cyberpunk are for the Xbox and Playstation, poor gits got a gimped game.
@Darknyht that also highlights the lack of big titles on Switch this year.
Cyberpunk must be bad, as Sony are offering refunds for digital purchases
@TheLightSpirit I wasn’t sure if there were any benefits to waiting for a native release on the next gen consoles or if they will literally be the base game with all the preinstalled updates on the disc that they promise to release over the next few months?
Either way, I wanted to wait so the game is in its best condition when I experience it. Being primarily a Nintendo gamer I have yet to push my 4K tv in terms of gaming and would like to try some ray tracing as well in this game. I know it won’t quite compare to what PC achieve but I will be happy
Cyberpunk 2077.
Clear example of a game to show why you should never pre-order games.
I guess they really like soccer across the pond.
@Circasurviver Football 😁 not soccer 👍
I tried Cyberpunk on Stadia, as I'm a Switch only gamer. After an hour, I got bored and turned it off. It's at best a 7 out of 10 game, and that's not counting all the bugs and glitches many of the consoles are experiencing with the game. It will go down as the most overrated, overhyped, overmarketed video game flop in recent history.
On the Switch - blurry and 20Fps is "a good port" (and they would be "trolls" for complaining 🙃) Make noise about awful performance and get your money back. That is how it should be.
Not worth paying $60 for top games on hardware that can not run it. Why I went PC with Cyberpunk (best version by far)
Fenyx Rising down to #17, will be $19/$29 soon. After playing the Stadia demo, not worth any more than that. 59hrs in Valhalla, deserves the sales. Fun game.
@Agramonte your commentary is very selective of the facts to paint a narrow viewpoint.
1. Cyberpunk was first showcased before the PS4 pro was even a thing let alone the PS5.
2. It was promoted in large part to the ps4 and Xbox community from the beginning.
3. Gamers who use sites like this one in general, know full well that switch cannot play the AAA games with same competence as the PS4 / Xbox. The expectation is already set
4. Trolls deliberately seek attention by both criticising a third party game on the switch and or mocking those who buy the switch version even though the community know the game won’t run as well and they knowing make that choice.
So it really isn’t comparable like you are trying to make it out. From my experience the last big games to launch on last gen consoles tend to show you just what you can pull out of the dated tech with years of experience rather than being a complete hot mess.
The first snowfall of the year is always the same. Everyone, even the people who have lived there their whole lives freaks the fark out and forgets EVERYTHING about how to drive in snow, leading to dozens of accidents
Open world AAA game releases are the same thing. EVERY TIME it's like people forget that every single AAA open world release is a train wreck full of bugs, missing features and disappointment. And everyone freaks out like "OMG this has never happened before, worst release ever"
I don't really have a point here. I guess ... people are dumb?
@ChaosBadger777
Ignorance about how business works is, to me, one of the most baffling things in the world. We all know corporations are heartless, soul sucking leeches that care about nothing and will kill you for a dollar, yet every time they do something we forget to assume that's the reason they are doing it.
Sony is offering refunds because ... you know Sony is offering refunds. The press around Cyberpunk is huge and someone said "woah, if we give people a refund we wont even have to pay for we will get literally 100s of millions in free positive press? Yes please!"
This happened with pretty much every major release in the last 2 years. But to suggest it's because of objective quality is just flat wrong. Sony doesn't offer refunds when a small $20 that offered a pre-order bonus scores a 2 and has a game crashing bug that hits you ever 40 seconds, because that's not going to make the news. It's not about quality, it's about press.
That's not to say Cyberpunk is in a great state on PS4/5, just that you should understand the motive.
@Agramonte I could have written that for you it was that predictable.
@meeto_1 There is no difference from promoting a game on Switch with PC or PS4 footage and then end up with a 600p muddy mess with missing features you only find out when it never shows up after launch (and Zero way of getting a refund). Obviously this was not promoted with the PS4 build. Because it looks/runs nothing like it. This was always a PC game first. Ps4/X1 version was just to make more cash regardless how it runs (same exact thing). And this does not just happen with AAA games, even Indies or ports of ancient games.
@WiltonRoots Publishers will not try harder unless they are put on the spot. Or just find a way to play it somewhere else.
Yes, super predictable on that point (And this is not even on Switch)
@Agramonte
Cyberpunk 2077 on PS4/XBO runs worse than any Switch game outside of WWE2K18 and Deadly Premonition 2 (games with literal single-digit frame rates).
"At least Cyberpunk 2077 runs at above 10 FPS, so clearly Nintendo gamerz have double standardz."
Interested to see how well Cyberpunk 2077 sells in its 2nd week now that its generally known that the console versions are a dumpster fire on PS4/XBO despite being anticipated as the second coming of Jesus.
The launch was huge though: ~240,000 retail copies sold for a game that will see the majority of its sales on digital and on PC is enormous.
Animal Crossing is still selling well above 40,000 copies per week. Truly insane numbers for a nearly 9 month-old game.
@Agramonte
I pretty sure most games that are multi plat will advertise the PC version at the forefront and have always done so. So the devs using PC footage to promote the game is nothing new and I never said it was. The people complaining are doing so because In game character models can look like virtue fighter 1 models before textures finally load up. The bugs that are crippling the game are so bad and the devs knew this which is why they placed an embargo on using console footage prior to the release day. That is unheard of.
The PS4 and Xbox were cited as platforms from the beginning so gamers should have had no reason to expect it not to run at a baseline level on their consoles. End of story on that particular point.
This was about gamers expectation. Gamers in general understand that graphical fidelity and resolution and frame rate is determined mostly by the power of a machine. So when I see the ray tracing trailers of cyberpunk I don’t expect that from a PS4 but I do expect the game not to crash repeatedly and have glaring bugs or uncontrollable pop up. At that point it doesn’t meet a baseline level of quality.
@Agramonte Your "putting them on the spot" makes zero difference. Much the same as people saying in the comment section "fix this game Nintendo??!!!?!?!?!" makes no difference. It's a bunch of people in a microcosm venting their opinions to thin air.
@westman98 Blurry 20fps or 10fps it is still "bad"... Not as bad is not a term for "good"
This just proves - Awful performance and awful resolutions makes games less enjoyable. No way around it.
People who thought they got a broken game with Deadly Premonition 2 should get their cash back also.
@WiltonRoots They at a minimum got their $60 back and can go buy something else (or the better PC version if they have it) That is a big deal for tons of people
Yes, Fix it or refund. Should be for Nintendo or CD Projekt.
@TheLightSpirit
It's not just that one quest. Currently any time a quest requires you to loot an item that is pre-spawned in the world the quest become unbeatable at the "loot this item" step if you have already looted it.
@Agramonte
Surely you understand that people are far more outraged at Cyberpunk because it's a brand new highly-anticipated game from the Witcher developers that was announced 8 years ago and has been hyped up as the second coming of Jesus, as opposed to a niche sequel to a small indie title (Deadly Premonition 2) or a port of a mediocre game that already ran like crap on other platforms (WWE2K).
@westman98
I see Christopher Dring (the guy who reports the numbers) thinks there is an outside chance of Animal Crossing being Christmas no.1 as it has increased in sales week on week over the last month.
I don't think it will as there is usually last minute shoppers buying the big third party games for their kids/family accross multiple platforms but the fact it is even in with a shout despite being released in March is incredible.
does it still count if those sales are getting refunded?
@TheFullAndy
Yeah, at its current trajectory, Animal Crossing may actually sell about as many copies this December as Pokemon Sword/Shield sold last December.
@Agramonte
Couldn't disagree more. Game is a buggy mess, but it's a game and it's playable. And that's what you paid for ... not quality guarantee. If you didn't think the 7+ years in development with a huge scope AAA game was going to be a train wreck on release, that's on you.
Don't pre-order games if you only want to play flushed out fully patched masterpieces. Pre-orders are hurting the industry, we shouldn't coddle idiots with unreal expectations. Every request for a refund should get an e-mail reply of "or maybe wait for some reviews next time, *****?"
Although in fairness the game has a 91% Metacritic. So maybe it's just "don't expect perfection, period?". Unless it's a first person Nintendo release. BOTW was a flawless masterpiece day one.
@westman98
Madness!
I would genuinely be interested to see refunds and returns get taken off this list.
Because Cyberpunk wouldn't be number 1 if it were.
They probably might not even break the top 10, the game is straight broken on the console with the highest install base that is currently available this year.
As a minimum, if you are releasing a game now, you would try damn hard to make it work well on a console with the highest Install base.
CDPR messed this whole thing up so badly.
Just a follow up from my above post.
News of gamers being refunded doesn't make headline on websites like the BBC if the refunds were not in the hundreds of thousands.
This is a straight up disaster for them.
https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.bbc.co.uk/news/amp/newsbeat-55301721
I didn't post this before because I thought it would be covered and I didn't know how to do it without screaming in all caps.
Sony's refunds will NOT be taken off this list, because they are not ON THE LIST in the first place because Sony can only refund DIGITAL SALES and this DOES NOT AND NEVER HAS TRACKED DIGITAL SALES.
"Of course, a huge number of Cyberpunk's sales — particularly on PC — will have been as a download, which are not tracked."
READING! It's a thing, yo
Woah. Well, lasted longer then I thought I would.
@ChaosBadger777 This hasn't been a bad year for me, but I have slowed down on game purchases these days. I used to pick something new up every month, but now it is a major release every season with eShop stuff in between when it is priced right.
@Darknyht its only really been Animal Crossing for me this year tried paper mario but couldn't get on with the ring puzzles and got bored.
I've picked up more on the PS4 but I just wish I had something worth turning the switch on for rather than just to grind out seasonal recipes on AC
@westman98 The person who put down their money for a 7 year in development AAA game or a Wii Remaster or a $15 Indie makes no difference.
Lots of times they all have the same level of excitement when the game releases. That 1000 on Switch or 1,000,000 on PS4 get fooled by misleading marketing should make no difference either. Give them a working product or refund it.
@Agramonte
Uhhh I'm not arguing whether broken games should be refundable (they should be).
It's just that the outrage over Cyberpunk will far exceed the outrage over any broken games on Switch.
@westman98 True, very true.
But i think that maybe because Switch gets 3rd party games so far after the initial release date that the hype for the game dies out.
Which kinda means any anger fans might have had for the game dissolves along with the hype.
Sure The Outer Worlds was broken on the Switch before they patched it a bit but by the time it was released, it wasn't worth complaining about.
Can't wait to see how many of these sales get erased after all the refunds get processed.
@ChaosBadger777 I understand. Since I only have the Switch so I don't typically pay attention to other consoles that much. Part of my year this year was going back and rediscovering Dragon's Dogma again and replaying some old classics I've missed when I was growing up.
@Agramonte just shut up will you. Never a good word to say about anything in these comment sections, trust me I read them every week. What kind of pathetic life do you live where you choose to be so negative on a forum so opposed to everything you stand for? Utterly pathetic troll.
i wonder if they will count all of cyberpunk 2077 copies returned!? i found it unplayable on base xbone console. Sent it back to amazon the next day. disgraceful practise to release a broken mess of a game on the supposed lead platform.
From everything I have heard, Cyberpunk 2077 is an absolute mess of a game, at least on consoles. It doesn't deserve that spot at all.
And I rarely argue that a game "deserves" its sales one way or the other. But apparently the game is barely functional if you have the base model PS4 or Xbone.
@Otoemetry Post of the year.
@Heavyarms55 i have the game on xboxone (well had.....) i returned it day one, it was ludicrous frame rate regularly hits very low figures , texture pop in is terrible and the world feels barren. Not to mention all the game breaking bugs i only encountered one of them but i didnt play for long before i gave up. Its a disgrace considering the lead platform was supposed to be ps4/xboxone.
@HeadPirate If we are talking about bugs and glitches that is expected. And tons accept that.
But this was a bait and switch. The console looks nothing like the game they been marketing and the framerate is just awful. This is a PC game that simply can not run on last gen consoles.
It happened to me with Control on PS4. Thankfully Amazon gave me my money back, and I bought it on PC.
I got Cyberpunk on GOG for $43 thanks to pre-order and they give you a 30 day return policy. So you risk nothing by doing it.
You cant expect perfection, but there needs to be limits that trigger a refund.
@westman98 hmm, so will never get the mass needed 🤔 I can see that
Just think no consumer should be in a position where they can not push back on publishers or trained that they should be happy with whatever they get. There is always another option.
@Agramonte
Completely invalid argument. Hell, MORE invalid. No game has ever, in the history of ever, used promotional material from anything other then PC. Even Switch games record off their PC builds because you can't get a screen shot higher then 1080x720 even from the dev kit ... so the 4k trailer for, say, BOTW? Recorded from PC. Plus every single promotion, showing, screen shot, video and media created has "not representative of final product" or something like it clearly on it. Most also had "ray tracing used" to let people know it's not going to look like that if you're system doesn't support ray tracing.
This is like arguing you should get a refund after you buy a burger and it doesn't look like the picture. No one has EVER said it would look like that, and in the history of burgers it never has. That's an ad. You're an idiot for expecting it to.
Well ... I mean unless you have a 2080ti. Game look basically just like the ads on my rig. But even I didn't expect it to.
PS - Also "bait and switch" is a legally defined term you are misusing. It is when you run an ad for a product YOU DO NOT HAVE (generally at a huge discount) to drive traffic to your store to try to sell people other things when they got there. If I ran an ad saying I had PS5s in stock at 50% off when I didn't have a single one at the time the ad dropped, that's bait and switch. What you're trying to accuse them of is simply misrepresentation.
@HeadPirate So that needs to change.
Just like Switch got a trailer for Doom Eternal running on Switch. No reason we need to wait for a review to get an actual screen shot either.
No it is not marked clearly all the time. Tons of times I can't find anywhere where capture is coming from. They just dump the hardware logos at the end. And obviously it is not, because this happened.
And no you are wrong. I can not sell you a burger that looks completely different that a picture I am adverting on the window or magazine. You can sue for false advertising. Picture a toasted Halal bun and then give you wonder bread. There are limits to how far off the mark you can go.
PC games list the required specs to hit the max settings long before you buy a game. And again, you have a way to return for refund on PC if there is a problem.
@Agramonte
It's doesn't need to change, because most people are adults, can read, and know what to expect. I like having games advertised in full specs so I can watch them on my 8k TV, and shouldn't have to give that up because someone who has apparently been in a coma for 20 years isn't up to speed on how the world works.
You should just let this go because you're putting you ignorance on full display. Not only is "the picture looks different" a complete different case from "it uses different ingredients" but "false advertising" isn't a thing you can sue someone for. It's a meaningless phrase children and clueless people scream when they don't get their way.
What you mean to say is that you would gather evidence that proves, concussively, that a false statement was the SOLE factor in you buying the product, then you would submit a complaint to the appropriate government organization based on the media, then in 2-5 years IF they found the company was at fault and IF that exact statement is covered in adverting standards in your state, they would send them a list of recommendations to ensure it didn't happen again. That's it. Done.
And no, that doesn't have to change either. The law assumes your not an idiot and know that ads are not a reflection of reality. Coke once argued they were not liable for a ad that made a product they made look healthy because anyone who thinks coke is ever going to make a healthy product is beyond hope. The adjudicator agreed, as they should.
The only thing that needs to change is people like you shouldn't be allowed to drone on about things that know nothing about.
